True squid are molluscs with an elongated soft body, large eyes, eight arms, and two tentacles in the superorder Decapodiformes, though many other molluscs within the broader Neocoleoidea are also called squid despite not strictly fitting these criteria. Like all other cephalopods, squid have a distinct head, bilateral symmetry, and a mantle. They are mainly soft-bodied, like octopuses, but have a small internal skeleton in the form of a rod-like gladius or pen, made of chitin. Squid diverged from other cephalopods during the Jurassic and occupy a similar role to teleost fish as open water predators of similar size and behaviour. They play an important role in the open water food web. The two long tentacles are used to grab prey and the eight arms to hold and control it. The beak then cuts the food into suitable size chunks for swallowing. Squid are rapid swimmers, moving by jet propulsion, and largely locate their prey by sight. They are among the most intelligent of invertebrates, with groups of Humboldt squid having been observed hunting cooperatively. They are preyed on by sharks, other fish, sea birds, seals and cetaceans, particularly sperm whales.

We Hokkien called it Ang Sai (红狮) which means Red Lion. The Emperor Red Snapper (Lutjanus sebae) is just one of many snappers we called Ang (red) something. Here the chunks of boneless fish meat are cooked in our very own blend of chilli paste mix.

Stir-fried Bitter Gourd with Eggs & Minced Pork is the next dish for dinner. Whether it is known as bitter melon or bitter squash, I love it in stir-fry or in soup. It goes well with eggs, meats or seafood. For my plate, there are also leftover Braised Pork Belly with mushrooms and char siu mum bought in the morning.

So Fish have sounds?! A thought for RiverClan!
Fish sounds are so frricken creepy. They sound like the background to horror games.
Could you imagine a RiverClan warrior in a flood, trying to get to the surface and all around them doomtm music plays?
Or Maybe they know the sounds and what they mean. They've learned them, they're taught how to mimic them in order to attract the prey's bigger predators.
They're also taught the sounds that mean 'get out of the water right now!'
And maybe someone is swimming, just fine. They dive deep to catch something because it's fun. And then they hear it. So close to them.
------
Some fish sounds you can find: FishSounds
My recommendations (the especially creepy ones from what was available):
Melanogrammus aeglefinus (Haddock)
Melanogrammus aeglefinus (Haddock)

Ophidion marginatum (Striped cusk-eel) (this ones a bit louder than the others)
--
Umbrina cirrosa (Shi drum) (I like this one a lot)
--
Aplodinotus grunniens (Freshwater drum)
--
Argyrosomus regius (Meagre)
--
Brosme brosme (Cusk)
--
Chelidonichthys lastoviza (Streaked gurnard)

Gadus morhua (Atlantic cod)
--
Lutjanus griseus (Grey snapper)
--
Protonibea diacanthus (Blackspotted croaker)

**A lot of these fish aren't harmful to cats, but the sounds are still good for some spooky ideas and visualizations!

Launched: 17 September 1966 - USS Pargo (SSN-650)
USS Pargo (SSN-650), a Sturgeon-class attack submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the pargo, also known as the red snapper, a fish of the genus Lutjanus found in the West Indies.
The contract to build Pargo was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut, on 26 March 1963 and her keel was laid down there on 3 June 1964. She was launched on 17 September 1966, sponsored by Mrs. James L. Holloway, Jr., the wife of retired Admiral James L. Holloway, Jr. (1898–1984).
Assigned to Submarine Development Group 2 with her home port at New London, Connecticut. Pargo was altered for acoustics at Groton then was involved in acoustic trials that resulted in alterations to all U.S. submarines. After acoustic trials the Pargo spent much of its time doing arctic research, surfacing at the north pole several times. Pargo participated in the search for the missing attack submarine USS Scorpion (SSN-589) from 27 May to 7 June 1968. She spent the rest of 1968 conducting various trials in the Caribbean Sea and off New London.
Pargo was decommissioned on 14 April 1995 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register the same day. Her scrapping via the Nuclear-Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard at Bremerton, Washington,
began on 1 October 1994 and was completed on 15 October 1996.

Spawning patterns and recommendations for improved management of southern red snapper stocks in the Amazon continental shelf of Brazil
Study analyzes cellular structures in the female gonads to identify reproductive processes and evaluate the effectiveness of current fishery management practices
Tumblr media
Since the 1960s, stocks of the southern red snapper (Lutjanus purpureus) have been exploited intensively on Brazil’s northern continental shelf. Around 75 percent of the catch is destined for export, and because this species commands a high price as an export commodity, catches are often underreported, and monitoring is unreliable. Despite this long history of exploitation, the social, ecological, and economic aspects of this fishery are still poorly understood.
For exports, there is a preference for smaller, immature juveniles under 900 grams in weight.
This fondness for smaller individuals and their high prices drive interest in this fishery, and it has been estimated that the number of clandestine vessels operating in the region is even larger than for the licensed ones. This demand appears to be driving growth overfishing, which occurs when large quantities of individuals smaller than the size of first sexual maturity are harvested, as shown by data collected from the fishing ports at which the catches are landed.
The analysis of reproductive patterns can provide fundamental insights for the conservation and management of fish stocks. One important stage of oocyte (immature egg cell) development is the follicular body or postovulatory follicle (POF) of the follicular cells that arise from the empty follicles following spawning. The identification of POFs is fundamental to confirm the effective periods of spawning, which is essential for the effective management of commercial fisheries, especially in the case of high-value species, such as L. purpureus.
