"Leif is one of the protagonists of Bug Fables, they're a cordyceps fungus inside a moth host. They've been in some other tournaments (notably the graveyard gambit tourney, for zombie characters). There are other cordyceps in Bug Fables but since Leif is a protagonist they're the most qualified for polls in general. They're an ice wizard who uses plural pronouns (we/us/our), has Fungus Autism(m), and their favorite things are food, cute creatures, and card games. ok so this whole thing is going to have major spoilers 4 bug fables (specifically Leif's Request)

so both Marine and Soup were used as test subjects in the snakemouth lab experiments. Marine did everything she could to protect Soup but there wasn't anything she could do to save them from what happened. Marine acted as a guardian for the younger and weaker subjects.

a while after all that, Hawthorn is sent into Snakemouth to try and find the artifact. Hawthorn falls into the lower level, got bitten and infected, and kinda just died down there. Many years later Hawthorn wakes up, now undead. about a month or two before the game takes place, Hawthorn manages to get out of Snakemouth den.

later, a short amount of time after the game's events, Soup leaves the lab and gets adopted by Mabel and Ezra. Marine stays in the lab to continue caring for the rest of the subjects.

During Hawthorn's travels, they make their way back to the ant kingdom. They meet Soup at the flower shop. Hawthorn forms a friendship with Mabel and kinda becomes Soup's uncle.

After a while Soup takes Hawthorn to Snakemouth den to see the lab. Hawthorn is basically swarmed by the zombies who are all curious about him. They don't attack as he's very clearly one of them. They begin offering him food and touch and Hawthorn just kinda.. cries. He hadn't been given this much love since he was with Anthi.

“There is no spoilers.” *Siffrin is portrayed as a roach* Hmm... Siffrin was too resilient to die which is roach tendencies, I suppose. Maybe this crossover takes place in the past? I think Siffrin and Lief would be pals immediately. Honestly both groups would get along great together. (I am now commenting on art instead of the liveblog? Pffft. Listen. Bug Fables is good okay?? That’s my excuse. XD)

We will pretend very hard that we Do Not See It and we also need to transcribe some Discord things because "theory chatter with friends" is absolutely relevant. Siffrin and Leif would be friends, definitely - probably going to formulate an entire new breed of puns. We feel that Kabbu and Mirabelle might get along too, honestly, even if not in the same "like a house on fire" way.

...though speaking of houses on fire, we're something like 50% sure that Vi might set one on fire, combined with The Party As Is. We think that Bonnie would think she's cool. We think that Vi would definitely take this as a chance to teach Bonnie a skill that is deeply illegal in at least five different countries. We think that though Siffrin might be invited he would not be enough of a moderating influence to prevent them from committing at least one major crime. This Will End Poorly, if probably in an entertaining way.

I really wanna say chompy bc she's just such a strong female protagonist /j but in all honesty I have to say Leif. Leif my beloved your story is so angsty? hello?? are you alright? can i offer you a therapy coupon please you need it look kabbu and vi volunteered to be your therapists now will you go? I love him and his brutal honesty. his dry wit. his love of cute stuff. his willingness to threaten vi when she tries to use a southern accent. the fact that he's a picky eater. he's a freaking [SPOILER REDACTED] and he's still a picky eater despite how he's still alive. why are you like this

the conflict once he realizes he went into snakemouth in a different time period was really well done, and there were little hints if you tattled in rooms and stuff before you found out. I'll be honest i thought they were glossing over it at first bc it doesn't come up much for a while? like you can beat the game without figuring out what up with him (but pls dont do that he's worth it), there's just little sideplot hooks and stuff. but i kinda like it more that way? i feel like all the team snakemouth character development happened a bit weirdly but still realy well. Kabbu had his whole thing in chapter 5, and Vi gets some stuff in chapter 3, but Leif gets his stuff in chapter 1, the end of 2, the halfway point of 3, the very end of 4, and the optional sidequest dungeon, and that always felt weird to me because the other two each had these strange sidequests to do to complete their character development and unlock something cool and Leif has to do a wild goose chase and a whole fucking dungeon boss and all and idk i like it but it's weird. anyways i feel like him being from the past didnt do much for the plot but BOY HOWDY did it do stuff for his character.

there's all these hints towards the truth behind him throughoit the story and's done so damn well and the spy dialogue for the zombiants contrasted with the other zombie enemies is so weird because he seems to recognize the situation for what it really is (not a true zombie just a possessed corpse) while everyone else thinks it's more a traditional zombie, but his knowledge means when the team goes into the snakemouth lab and starts fighting the other zombies and they notice the similarities and he's noticing weird feelings and the CONFLICT IS DELICIOUS AAAAAAAAA

also did i mention he's fucking hilarious he's the only one in the group with common sense and he uses it to fuck with people. he sees any creature with a sprite smaller than Tanjerin and decides he loves them, if they're round and smol he loves them all; he basically says he'll take good care of pibu the bedbug in the form of a threat because he thinks pibus just that cute and also I feel like he would be teaching spy cards to vi and call her a third rate duelist with a fourth rate deck even though he built the deck and she has no clue what she's doing

💔: tell us about one of your LEAST favorite characters and why you dislike them.

In a serious sense, definitely Hoaxe the Wasp King. he's an intimidating villain, sure. but. uh. what exactly was his plan? what was he gonna do with the everlasting sapling?

he's just a standard villain because the story needed one. he's built up well, but the guy himself is kinda a letdown bc he just tries to oneshot the gang, succeeds the first time, fails the 2nd, and spends the whold battle wasting your resources because everlasting king is next up and he knows it. which from a story standpoint, is pretty cool and smart! waste the enemies resources fighting you so when you power up and get al your strength back they can't stand up to you!

but uh

we all know how that turned out ('he turned himself into a tree kabbu! funniest shit i've ever seen!' - Leif /j); and the ending to his story is so abrupt imo and it feels like we don't get conclusion.

nonserious sense is the fucker on metal island who sold hoaxe that stupid magic crown and wouldn't tell me what any of his stupid items were before i bought them and wouldn't let me into his house for that item i knew was there for so damn long

💎: are there any fun facts or trivia that you would like to share?

i forgot about the game for a while starting like right before 1.1 dropped so when i got back and picked up my hard mode file again i was really confused why kabbu's dash was acted weird bc i though it was like the old one where you just mashed b and hoped you were technically going faster than normal. when i realized i could extend the dash and move quicker with it now i was very confused and looked up the update and it blew my mind lol

oh my god i'm so sorry for rambling! this was really fun though! next one i get i'll answer with either deltarune/undertale responses or zelda responses so look forwards to that ok byyeeeeee

An Angsty Idea About Bug Fables + Hollow Knight

So it starts off with Team Snakemouth somehow coming across Hallownest, or perhaps some folk from there came across Bugaria instead. Regardless, eventually more folks from Hallownest show up, and things are going alright for a bit.

Until the Infection shows up out-of-nowhere and sends Bugaria into mass panic.

Of course, the source is different this time (haven’t really thought about this yet), but when it starts the Hallownesters are like not again we just cleaned up this mess--

The physical effects are the same (apart from bugs groaning in pain from the changes early on), so at first it’s treated it like the original Infection. But that doesn’t last, because it’s the mental effects that change.

Here’s the thing: Bugs in Bug Fables gained sentience/sapience seemingly out-of-nowhere during what I believe was an mass extinction effect for humans, while bugs in Hallownest gained it from a known individual (The Pale King). Due to this, the mental effects changed a little bit. Why? Who knows?

The Infection toys with their minds, not just with false hopes and desires like before, but also their fears and regrets, making the bug dream of them or even hallucinate them in every which way. It’s trying to drive the bug mad and enslave them through whatever means possible, whether it be through paranoia, despair, rage, or obsession.

This madness can take on multiple forms, depending on the most used method and on the bug themselves. It can revert them to primal instincts like the original, but not always. One can go nuts with the possibilities. I have a few examples down below:

Some of them are still intelligent and may even retain some of what’s left of themselves, but have gone mad with fulfilling their desires and obsessing over them.

Back to the primal instincts part, it could just be someone who’s too far gone in their fear and paranoia, led to believe everything and everyone is out to get them. It could also be one blinded by rage, seeing red everywhere and thinking everyone’s against them.

Those lost to despair end up desiring nothing more than their own destruction as they beg for the pain to end. The Infection makes sure that the chosen method for doing so will infect as many bugs as possible.

There’s good news at least: Bugarians are able to resist the physical and mental effects. Not enough to purge it from their system nor to stop the progress of the Infection completely, but slowing (and occasionally stopping on better days) is better than nothing. No matter how much it may hurt, physically or mentally.

Some bugs don’t want to resist the Infection, whether due to their slowly slipping sanity or simply their own conscious choice. These bugs are the most dangerous ones, believing it’ll bring power, which it sadly does by a huge amount (increased physical attributes all around). They end up almost worshipping the Infection, desiring to give other bugs their “gift” as an act of kindness. As for those who are resisting the Infection, they try to urge them to “give in” and are somehow able to play along with whatever’s going on in the victim’s head.

Last note: For particularly sickly bugs, they don’t go mad at all. They simply die as the Infection eats away at their body. In hindsight, this may be a mercy.

Now some of you may be wondering: Do our favorites get infected? Probably, but that’s up to whoever wants to keep going with this (although I think we all want at least one member of Team Snakemouth to get infected).

As for the cure and ultimate goal? I didn’t think that far ahead. RIP.

A Quick Ramble About Leif

a hastily thrown together post about how i feel about leif as a character, from the perspective of someone who’s plural

major spoilers for bug fables, especially for the quest Leif’s Request. if you havent gotten past probably around chapter two or three, you’ll want to stay out of this.

also, if you bring plurality discourse onto this post, i will block you on sight. dont even try it.

GOD. okay

tldr: if anything the ending of this quest just solidifies my seeing leif as plural. the rest of this post is just me dissecting why

i think the devs made it very clear that ‘leif’ is actually the body of leif the moth and the cordyceps. tried to anyway, but it definitely came across crystal clear to me. theres an emphasis of the two of them sharing the same body, and they are not the same entity

which is exactly how plurality works? like, literally? i mean its slightly different because the cordyceps has its own body clearly, one that’s embedded into leif’s, but the base concept of ‘two entities sharing one body’ is dead on for plurality. also the part at the end where the cordyceps is specifically talking about itself, switching between ‘i’ and ‘we,’ like thats so specifically a plural thing that i am unable to see leif as anything other than plural

i would probably regard ‘leif’ as their system name, in a way? or the body’s name, in any case, but both of them kind of share the name as well. that can happen anyhow, in some systems where the division between headmates/alters isnt too clear and theyre all kind of part of each other. on the other hand making a totally different system name for them would be really fun ngl

it could also work in the way of the cordyceps being the ‘host’ or main fronter, while leif is dormant. i mean hes technically like. dead. but also yknow

i dunno man. if they are a system it would be one where its vaguely two consciousnesses influencing the actions of whoever is piloting the body, so usually the cordyceps. theyre probably co-con a lot, given what happened in the final fight against the zommoth. or theyre like chronically blurred together, or again, the division between the two of them just isnt really clearly defined. im leaning towards that last one really, since thats in part how my system works too; i cant always tell if its me or V that’s fronting

(also yes, we had a good laugh upon finding out vi’s name. still fucking funny to me lol)

mostly im just happy to have a character who i can explicitly pin as plural based on the canon lore. itd be fun to explore how the two of them would work as a system for sure, and how that works in combat. my headmates constantly backseat pilot, im sure that happens for leif as well askdfgkjkjs

Bug Fables Updates: Warning, these will be MAJOR spoilers!

I continued in the abandoned lab and solved puzzle after puzzle, letting Leif take the lead. Then, we finally found the last room and... nothing was there in the beginning. Only for a gigantic Zombie Moth to attack us! It was huge and strong and Leif said it was his sibling, but denied it after a few turns of the battle. The damn thing killed me twice before I finally beat it! The first one was SO close also! And then... we got the truth... about Leif. Leif isn't really Leif, but a cordyceps living in him and having taken over his body, personality and memories. Basically, Leif is a symbiont. That explains the "we" and "us" talk then, like Venom does. "Leif" then had a crisis about his identity, but Vi and Kabbu assured him that they don't mind if he's basically an undead moth piloted by a mushroom. For them, Leif is their friend and that is all that matters. Leif also accepted that he could be Leif and then we could finally meet his family, which are all darling people. But ouch, that was a major PUNCH in the FEELS.
