the glossy-mantled manucode is a member of the bird-of-paradise family. they are found in new guinea, along with surrounding islands. they are known for their iridescent feathers, which are purple and blue under light. they primarily feed on fruits, in particular figs, and arthropods. unlike many birds of paradise, the sexes are very similar; the colorful glossy plumage the species is known for is found in both males and females (females are slightly smaller than males). they aren’t particularly social birds; they are rarely found in small groups, but more frequently found solo or in pairs.

November 28, 2022 - Trumpet Manucode (Phonygammus keraudrenii) These birds-of-paradise are found in rainforests across New Guinea and nearby islands and on the northern tip of the Cape York Peninsula in northeastern Australia. Foraging in pairs or groups of up to ten, they eat fruit, particularly figs, along with some insects, spiders, and gastropods. They build open basin-shaped nests from vine and fern tendrils in forked tree branches. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks.

Some families are more popular than others, you know? It's a miracle there wasn't a submission for ever single corvid that's ever existed. Instead, we have these guys.

Okay, so now that it’s been spilled that I like Rain World…
…OC dump time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In order of creation and appearance:
Ventus/Ven, an Avian slugcat (my own subspecies!) based off of a trumpet manucode! He’s very showy and prideful, and he hates it when he gets hurt or dirty. I don’t have much else on him yet.
Cami: a Chameleon slugcat (another of my own subspecies)- she’s very shy and doesn’t like to talk much. I don’t have anything else lol
Slag: a Rock slugcat (again, another subspecies lol). He’s rude and tough and doesn’t get along with others easily.
[Not pictured: Magma, another Rock slugcat, based off of lava rocks — she’s Slag’s best buddy and is equally rude.]
[Not pictured: Kin: a mutating slugcat that decided from a young age to live with a tribe of scavs. They mutated accordingly and took on a more scav-like appearance. When they first joined, the scavs didn’t yet see them as one of their own, even if they were friendly — but over time they became more like family, earning the name Kin, due to a personal headcanon of mine. Kin can still mutate to gain abilities of other species, though those mutations are less permanent.]
The pink one is currently unnamed, but she’s my persona. She’s a cave-dweller. Her markings glow in the dark, as well as the anglerfish-esque lure on her head, and the whisker-like feelers on her face and limbs. She doesn’t see very well, but she’s able to feel her surroundings, which helps, and the feelers are sensitive enough to even detect changes in air direction (to detect nearby movement or weather changes). Her legs are long and powerful, able to leap further and run faster, and she can cling onto and stay put on walls with her sharp claws.
The Interceptor: currently has no real name, but they are a slugcat that failed to reach ascension and basically made it everyone else’s problem. Out of spite, they became hostile and attacked adults of any species — especially fellow slugcats — to keep them from reaching ascension and to perpetuate the cycle of reincarnation. They refuse to attack babies, due to the fact they are not in the cycle yet and killing them would be pointless.
Flowers in the Meadow, Nature’s Bloom: a forgotten iterator. She focused more on plant life than creature life, creating various flora to populate different ecosystems and planting her own personal gardens. As the rain became heavier and more aggressive, her gardens got continually washed away, but each cycle they’d regrow more abundantly, due to additional hydration and minerals washed in by the rains. It eventually got to the point where her entire sector — including herself — became much too overgrown with plant life, and she and her gardens were forgotten.

The bird and bat names could use a makeover
'Red Robin'? Seriously? I mean, at first I get it, he still wants to be Robin, but can't because it was stolen, but I feel like he eventually gets over it at least somewhat. And it's confusing, you can't call Tim 'Red', because here is Jason being Red Hood, and you can't call him 'Robin', because Damien is Robin. So. He should rename himself to another name. Probably a bird, maybe Cardinal, or Sparrow. Maybe Sunbird, they are red.
Or if we want to forget the red theme, than we can do a smart bird that uses tools, like Raven, but then again that is taken up by another hero. Maybe Crow, or Bluejay or Rook. They are smart.
Maybe Spurwing, they have literal spikes on the wrist of their wings.
Jason got his name, Red Hood, from it being a past alias for the Joker for irony purposes. He could have gotten a cool name like Phoenix. Seriously, he rose from the dead, he is a bird, he dresses in red, he likes FIREarms. Phoenix. It's right there.
And Duke, buddy, why are you Signal, is it like the Bat Signal? The light with a bat on it because you have light powers? Boring. You could have been a bird too. And Oriole is basically his design anyway, yellow, black, and white. Other cool birds are Tanager (many different colors of those) or Goldfinch.
Or you could have referenced light or shadow. There are several birds-of-paradise that have blackhole-like feathers. The one that most closely resembles the design of Signal being the twelve-wired one. And while that is not the best name, there are a few better ones. Superbs have vantablack feathers. Manucodes have iridescent black feathers, which is cool. There are Riflebirds that have superblack feathers too, but I'm not too sure that Bruce I-Hate-Guns Wayne would allow RIFLEbird.
The point is, why didn't the boys continue the bird theme? Like. Why?
But then the girls are bats, and it makes sense, except Stephanie being Spoiler... But she was Robin at one point, and Batgirl at another, so really either works. I think Batgirl fits more tho. If she wanted to be a bird, I think some kind of hummingbird would work with her personality.
Literally all the guys are birds, and girls are bats... Except for Batman... Lol

Trumpet Manucode. One of the birds of paradise, but one that tends to be forgotten due to its “plain” coloration and lack of wildly-specialized feathers. Still, I think they’re beautiful, don’t you?
Based on a photo by Laurie Ross. Just getting some iridescence practice in today.

Today’s Bird Fact! Source and awesome video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C6EbpDks-A Quote from Wikipeida: “Although not the most vibrant in appearance, the curl-crested manucode is certainly a vocally evolved species. In most birds, the trachea extends straight from the mouth to the lungs, whereas in this species, it extends towards the lower chest area and coils back through the abdominal cavity and then reaches the lungs, which works like a wind instrument and gives the curl-crested manucode a characteristic mellow, fluting sound which is audible from a considerable distance. These vocalizations are common in courtship displays, where the males follow insistently the females among the vegetation spreading their wings and tail and raising their bodies in a strutting fashion. Manucode pairs also vocalize to defend their territories from invading pairs.”

The black sicklebill (Epimachus fastosus) is a large bird-of-paradise of midmountain forests of New Guinea. The male has black plumage with iridescent green, blue and purple scale-like feathers, red irises, bright yellow mouth, long curved black bill, huge sabre-shaped tail and large erectile fan-like plumes on the sides of its breast. The female is smaller than the male, with reddish brown plumage, brown irises, and buff below. Reaching up to 43 inches in length, the male black sicklebill is the longest member of Paradisaeidae, though the curl-crested manucode has a larger body.
The sicklebill's diet consists mainly of fruits and arthropods. The male of the species is polygamous and performs a horizontal courtship display with the pectoral plumes raised around its head.
Ongoing habitat loss, small population size, and hunting in some areas for food and its tail feathers are areas of concern. The black sicklebill is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Le Manucode/Le Coq de roche
A King Bird of Paradise & a Cock-of-the-Rock, I've drawn both of them before. They live on different continents so I'm not sure why they’re together here. Both have weird shaped heads?
