On Age in Carmen Sandiego (2019)

Or, at the very least, in the timeline of Crimson Shades.

First off, Carmen’s mother, Carlotta Valdez (aka “Vera Cruz”), was supposed to have “died” in 1999. Carmen looked around perhaps a year old at that point in time, giving her a possible birth-date in 1996 to 1997. This in turn suggests that the series takes place some time before the actual date of publication—say, 2017/2018 onwards—to maintain Carmen’s rough age.

Rough age ranges of the characters, taking Carmen’s rough birthdate for estimation:

Team Red

Isabela Valdez/Black Sheep/Carmen Sandiego: 16/17 starting at VILE, 18/19 during the Poitiers Caper, 22/23 by the end.

Fairly self-explanatory.

This is going to cause some trouble, I just know it. But the average amount of time it takes to get a university degree in the UK is around three years, and Julia has two of them. She also seems to have jumped right to an associate professorship at Oxford in Season 3, the requirements for which are around 4-6 years of study plus a thesis. Thus Julia would have had to have been in school for at least something like seven to nine years before joining Interpol, with whom she had apparently only been for a fortnight before the Poitiers Caper. The number above assumes that she skipped a year and took a year less to complete her second degree. Or took two years less. Or started two years early. You get my point. Basically, Julia has to be a fair bit older than she looks in order to actually have the qualifications she possesses.

Agent Umaira Zari: 38 during the Poitiers Caper, 40 when arresting VILE, 42 by the end.

Some additional ages:

Nakamura Hideo: 17 when his brother Suhara was born, 36 when his brother disappeared, 63 when his brother returned for good, 65 by the end.

Not an unreasonable age given his looks, I thought.

Carlotta Valdez: 27 when she gave birth to Isabela, 47 when Carmen returned home to her, 49 by the end.

Young but not too long, once again.

Okay this article is really written by a hater, which makes it kind of funny to me. I looked her up and all I found out about her was that a) she published a guide to restaurants in Paris, b) she was part of a campaign by extreme right-wing newspapers to defame left wing politicians, going as far as disguising herself as an American journalist in order to harass a politician who then killed himself and c) she once pretended to be “an extraordinary psychopathic case” in order to meet Freud. Anyways, here is her review of Raymond Bernard’s Les Misérables

One must commend Raymond Bernard for having the courage to attack Les Misérables. It’s been too long since I read Victor Hugo’s work to faithfully judge if M. Raymond Bernard succeeded in his audacious enterprise but the hugolatres in my family were emitting awful shouts in leaving the little festival organized by the Natan brother in honor of the film, or rather the three films. The next one will be shown at the Marivaux and the last one at the Marignan. I am afraid that you will not see me in those establishments for some time because the debut film, A Tempest in a Skull, didn’t give me a single desire to know the rest of the disappointments in store for Jean Valjean, Cosette, and the Thénardiers. That being said, I must admit that my neighbors at the Paramount theater were very moved the other night.

“It’s terribly beautiful and that’s it then!” one was saying.

“Me, I find it remuant (sic),” the other one was saying, but who meant to say emouvant [I gather that they said fidgety but meant to say moving].

That’s all true, by the by. But like Les Deux Orpheline, it’s not more or less. That is to say, there’s a certain dose of comedy throughout the drama. You must understand that when I say “drama,” I’m thinking “melodrama.” The impression of “affectation” is certainly from Florelle, who never stops coughing, agonizing and dying. By a curious phenomenon of mimicry, she succeeded in making a good part of the audience cough. You could have said it was a fatal epidemic of bronchitis.

The formidable talent of M. Harry Baur highlights the contrast to the point of cruelty. Harry Baur is Jean Valjean and M. Madeleine and Champmathieu. That a single actor manages to create three characters who are so different is a true tour de force that the public probably doesn’t appreciate enough.

He creates the impression that the shape of his eyes, of his chin, and of his cheeks has changed and that the three characters only share a vague resemblance. I already knew that M. Harry Baur was a great actor. I hadn’t even hoped he’d be this good. His role as Champmathieu particularly is overwhelmingly realistic and colorful. His Champmathieu: we’ve all known someone like him, in the correctional courts, before the justice of the peace, or simply the police.

M. Charles Vanel and M. Charles Dullin are Machiavellian and unlikeable, as befits them but always in a way that is melodramatic, which may not have been necessary.

Jean Valjean, a prodigiously strong convict, has just been liberated. He walks, he goes from town to town, flotsam that everyone rejects. Everyone except a brave and saintly man, an archbishop, who offers him hospitality. Jean Valjean immediately rewards him by stealing his silver. . .[skipping most of this because we know the plot] . . .

At the same time, we have been introduced to Fantine, a charming seamstress who, alas! believed the beautiful promises of a man. Fantine is the mother of a charming little girl named Cosette who is put into the care of two innkeepers in Montfermeil, the Thénardiers. This poor girl is right out of Cinderella. She sweeps, she’s smacked around, in short she’s like a sister to the Two Orphans, like I had the honor of telling you earlier. These torturers don’t ask for any less than a big sum of money from the poor little mother, who believes that her daughter is happy and cherished.

I never have understood why Fantine gives her well loved daughter to people she did not know, when it would have been simple to find a nanny near Montreuil. Right? But M. Victor Hugo had to have had his reasons and then, as others have said, “if it wasn’t for that then the story would have been over right away.” . . . [skipping more because the plot summary, goes without commentary all the way to Fantine’s death and Valjean’s escape]. . .

There you have the first part of the tryptic. I said at the beginning of my article what I thought of the interruption. It would be unfair of me to the director and camera operator if I didn’t tell them that certain scenes gave me sea sickness. Why is Fantine, on her death bed, presented like a woman on an ocean liner tilted 45 degrees, suffering pains that we are left to guess at? There is not a single reason to then show us Jean Valjean with his feet on the ceiling and Javert in diagonal. Yet another wrongdoing of Bolshevism! It was the Russians, unless I am mistaken, who first tried to get photos on unexpected planes.

Again, you could say “That’s cinema for you!” But what you cannot say that for, oh! that is the monologues of M. Madeleine. His brand new vocation as great honest man has really turned his head around and the poor man gives long speeches that seem to torment many and which make us suffer even more.

Must I add that with the exception of Henri VIII, with its irresistible colorfulness, “period pieces” always seem disappointing to me. It takes more than hoisting a lantern to the top of a pulley or giving a twisted cane to Javert to recreate the atmosphere. People forget that faces and silhouettes change and that the brave actors of 1934 look more or less like disguises.

It takes the dramatic power of M. Harry Baur to make you forget that. He is the only thing alas! to defend this film.

DIMANCHE 7 MAI 2023 (Billet 2 / 3)

« MISANTHROPE » (1h 59)

Un film de Damián Szifrón, avec Shailene Woodley, Ben Mendelsohn, Jovan Adepo…

Après avoir étudié de très près TOUTES les sorties de film durant notre absence (bandes-annonces, critiques Presse, critiques spectateurs…), seuls 3 films sortaient du lot : « Sur l'Adamant », le film réalisé par Nicolas Philibert dont nous avions ADORE « Être et avoir », « Burning days » (un film turc que nous verrons très prochainement avec Marina) et un thriller choc, « Misanthrope », qui ne se donne que dans 2 salles à Paris (le Pathé Parnasse où même ceux qui ont le Pass paient un supplément et l’ancien Marignan, devenu le Gaumont Champs-Elysées… un cinéma resté dans son jus des années 80, invraisemblablement daté, une « antiquité » dans le sens péjoratif du terme !).

C’est sur les Champs que JM a vu, tout seul « Misanthrope » (qui n’est pas du tout un film pour Marina, ni pour 99,99% des lecteurs/abonnés du Blog, à l’exception de Serge, le frère de JM)… et il l’a beaucoup aimé… au point même de lui accorder ❤️❤️❤️,8 cœurs sur 5.

Si vous êtes maso, lisez la critique ci-dessous pour vous en faire une idée plus précise. Par contre la bande-annonce ne reflétant pas du tout l’ambiance du film, nous avons choisi de ne vous montrer que l’affiche.

Nouveau long-métrage co-écrit et réalisé par Damián Szifrón, « Misanthrope » raconte l’histoire d’Eleanor, une jeune enquêtrice au lourd passé, qui est appelée sur les lieux d’un crime de masse terrible. La police et le FBI lancent une chasse à l’homme sans précédent, mais face au mode opératoire constamment imprévisible de l’assassin, l’enquête piétine. Eleanor, quant à elle se trouve de plus en plus impliquée dans l’affaire et se rend compte que ses propres démons intérieurs peuvent l’aider à cerner l’esprit de ce tueur si singulier…

On sent que pour le scénario, Damián Szifron et Jonathan Wakeham ont voulu s’inspirer des thrillers des années 90-2000 comme « Le Silence des Agneaux » ou encore « Le Collectionneur » car nous retrouvons le principe et la structure de ces derniers, avec une jeune enquêtrice qui doit faire ses preuves pour se frayer un chemin dans le milieu, qui a des capacités, mais que peu de personnes voient, avec évidemment une avancée de l’enquête assez classique.

Mais l’intérêt du film se situe autre part car, si les scénaristes connaissent leurs classiques et en utilisent les ficelles, c’est pour mieux en détourner les thèmes. Ainsi, le personnage d’Eleanor est au départ une policière lambda. Un jour, une tuerie de masse se déroule dans sa ville, Baltimore, et elle va prendre de bonnes décisions. Grâce à cela, elle va être remarquée par Lammarck, un agent du FBI, qui va la prendre dans son équipe. Les bonnes intuitions de la jeune policière cachent cependant un traumatisme qui fait qu’elle est en mesure de comprendre le tueur.

Ce principe est intéressant puisque nous ne sommes pas sur du profilage classique. Si Eleanor et le tueur ont un traumatisme et voient le monde de la même façon, ils n’utilisent pas pour autant leur colère de la même manière. C’est astucieux car Eleanor a de l’empathie pour le tueur et du coup nous aussi. On comprend le point de vue de celui-ci sans, évidemment, approuver ses actes.

D’ailleurs, le titre du film convient aussi bien aux deux personnages. C’est là que les thèmes très contemporains de l’histoire sont bien développés, en plus des personnages qui sont également bien traités. Le long-métrage propose une critique des Etats-Unis, que ce soit pour les tueries de masse qui gangrènent le pays depuis des années, la vente libre des armes, les « fake news », les extrémistes d’extrême droite, mais aussi les institutions.

En ce qui concerne ces derniers, c’est le personnage de Lammarck qui est mis en avant. Celui-ci gère l’enquête mais est entravé par différents politiques ou supérieurs et subalternes qui veulent être mis en avant et qui prennent de mauvaises décisions qui viennent entraver l’enquête, voire coûtent des vies. Cette dimension politique est intéressante et bienvenue, bien développée, et a une vraie incidence sur l’histoire.

En ce qui concerne la réalisation, il y a peu à dire : Damián Szifron possède une technique assez clinique et cela se voit dès la scène d’ouverture. Le film s’ouvre sur une tuerie de masse, et la réalisation est aussi froide que le tueur. Pour le reste, on sent là aussi qu’il y a une imagerie inspirée des thrillers des années 90-2000, mais qu’il modernise par des moyens actuels, comme l’utilisation du drone ou une image réaliste dépourvue de filtres comme il y a 20 ou 30 ans.

Il gère bien aussi les moments de fusillades, qui sont assez glaçants pour le spectateur. Le seul vrai reproche que l’on pourrait faire au film est qu’il manque de tension vers la fin, alors que celle-ci devrait être à son comble. Mais, vu la manière dont le scénariste-réalisateur a choisi d’élaborer son acte final, c’est plutôt cohérent.
