I'm trying to get into comics, any recommendations?
I'm a DC girl so this list is gonna be very DC heavy, sorry.
DC
All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely: The book that made me a Superman fan. Beautiful, joyful, self-contained story.
The Flash by Mark Waid: Will make you a Flash fan. Some of the first comics I ever read come from this run. The original run is collected in omnibus format but Mark had a second, shorter run from around 98-2000 that wrapped up a lot of loose ends, and another one around 2008. Those are good too.
The New Teen Titans by Marv Wolfman and George Perez: This book probably saved DC, and it's a wonderful read.
Batman by Scott Snyder: One of the best modern Batman runs, although it suffers from the stink of the New 52 at times.
52 by Mark Waid, Greg Rucka, Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns, and Keith Giffen: Might need some onboarding for this one but it's a great read focusing on some of the second-string characters in the DCU and a triumph of collaborative storytelling. Its spinoff Booster Gold series is great too.
Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross: A surprisingly-accessible refutation of the 1990s trend towards darker and edgier superheroes, it's a must-read for the beautiful painted artwork alone.
Mister Miracle and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, both by Tom King: Tom King's had some big misses, especially Heroes in Crisis, for which as a Wally West fan I should want his blood. He makes up for it when he hits, though. These two titles are his best work.
Secret Six by Gail Simone: A great off-beat title revolving around a small group of supervillains trying to do good. Wish they'd bring this concept back tbh.
DC: The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke: A love letter to the Silver Age of Comics with gorgeous artwork. Was later adapted into an animated film, which is also very good.
Dwayne McDuffie's original Milestone Comics (incl. Icon, Hardware, and Static), are all very good titles focusing specifically on Black heroes. McDuffie also had a great run on Justice League of America from 2007 to 2009.
Justice League International by Keith Giffen, J. M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire: A great and hilarious book that offers a much more lighthearted take on the DC Universe. There's a lot of focus on more obscure and minor characters which I always enjoy.
Doom Patrol by Grant Morrison and Rachel Pollock: If you've seen the TV show, it cribs heavily from this. A lovely series featuring a group of misfits trying to find their way in the world.
Jack Kirby's Fourth World: Brilliant, esoteric, at times close to incomprehensible. A must-read.
The Question by Dennis O'Neil: A wonderfully cerebral and philosophical series. Denny left reading recs in every issue! See also his run on Green Lantern/Green Arrow, which is a bit outdated but still electrifyingly political for its time, and his seminal run on the Batman titles.
Marvel
Uncanny X-Men by Chris Claremont: One of the greatest comic book runs of all time. Largely defined the X-Men for several generations basically until the Krakoa era. Most X-Men stories on the "greatest of all time" list come from this run.
Vision by Tom King: Hey, it's Tom King again! He wrote for Marvel too. This one's a really good character piece featuring a character who often doesn't get to stand on his own.
Daredevil by Mark Waid: The best Daredevil run, hands down.
The Amazing Spider-Man by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko: The original Spider-Man run is still my favorite. Some great Silver Age nonsense combined with great character drama is what put Marvel on the map, and it's on full display here.
Runaways by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona: A really good series that's mostly self-contained about a bunch of kids who run away from home after discovering that their parents are supervillains.
Fantastic Four by Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo: I sing Waid's praises a lot, but damn can he write. The best run for Marvel's First Family.
Others
Bone by Jeff Smith: An epic fantasy adventure starring three cartoon funny animal characters. My favorite comic of all time.
Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai: Another epic starring funny animals, this time set in the Edo period of Japan. Mostly episodic, so it's really easy to jump into.
Astro City by Kurt Buseik: Another love letter to the Silver Age, and to superheroes in general. Essential reading.

First intro post for a verrrry long time!
Hello! 🌈
Bit out of practice for this but since I’ve started to get a few new followers again I thought I should make a quick post to say thanks for following and to kind of re-introduce myself since I’ve been away a little while. Tumblr’s been my online home since 2011 though so even when I’ve been away a while I’ll always come back sooner or later - I met my lovely partner here and this hellsite saved my life in a very literal way back in the day so it means the world to me 💙
I can’t help worrying that if you’ve just followed for the art you’ll get fed up with the absolute yard-sard of fandoms, nonsense and tumblr nostalgia I’ve been reblogging lately and I don’t want to put unwanted nonsense on your dash so I’ve set up a side blog which I’ll reblog just my art to. Feel free to follow that one instead! 💜 Art side blog: @johnmist 💜
But if we share fandoms (especially Torchwood - oh my god I am over three years into the biggest hyperfixation of my life and it’s showing no signs of fading!) or other interests it’d be nice to meet you - feel free to say hi!
My name’s John, some people might still know me as Mist, but all the best people call me Stringer (= my wife 🥰) I’m a 40-something trans, bi, disabled artist who’s tired of all the hate, horror and misery out there. I can’t change the world but I can try to brighten it just a tiny bit with some fan art of characters and fandoms that I love.
At the moment I’m struggling big-time with my health. I live with fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, severe crohn’s and UC, endometriosis, narcolepsy, migraines and recurrent meningitis so honestly, sometimes I have to disappear without warning. From one day to the next I never know what I can manage so I try to make the most of every good day, every good hour, every good minute and draw as much as I can when I’m able. Art is one of the things that keeps me going, makes life worthwhile.
Full disclosure, I’m currently going through the worst health of my life and finding it hard to cope this time. Somehow this is the one place I don’t actually feel guilty sharing so I may talk about it sometimes. I’m also autistic and like just about everyone on this site I also suffer from anxiety. I also am very much an adult and may post/reblog adult subjects so please don’t follow if you are a minor or know you’ll find topics such as sex, sexuality, my fetish and other mature content upsetting - be safe in your own space, and feel free to follow my art blog instead 💙
💜 Again.... Art side blog: @johnmist 😁 💜
A non-complete list of my other fandoms:
Doctor Who (classic and new), What We Do In The Shadows, Marvel (mostly MCU, particularly Runaways, Jessica Jones, Wandavision, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, She-Hulk and Cloak & Dagger), Red Dwarf, Homestuck, Ashes to Ashes/Life on Mars, YuGiOh, Splatoon, Animal Crossing, Xenoblade, My Hero Academia, Yakuza, 80s and 90s nostalgia and various other franchises that we dip in and out of from time to time 💙
My icon is my favourite OC, Kim, and I may post about my OCs now and again.
I’m horrible at self-promotion but I do have a Patreon and a ko-fi and am very grateful for any support; money is a constant struggle and every little helps 💙 If you’d like a hi-res version of any of my sketches in exchange for a ko-fi donation please drop me a message 🥰

Thank you for following - I hope you enjoy my art!

Dear Mr. Whitley,
I hope I'm not spamming your inbox with all these questions. But I do have a few things I'm curious on.
Besides Gwenpool, Mockingbird, and the Wasps, which Marvel characters do you hope to get a shot at writing someday?
Do the Ant/Wasp legacy family count as Marvel's version of Kamen Riders? (It's a Japanese children's action show featuring heroes who were originally themed after grasshoppers and other insects. One installment called Kamen Rider Stronger even had an Ant-Man and Wasp style dynamic going with a boy hero themed after a herakles beetle and a girl hero themed after a ladybug.)
Who would you say was Janet Van Dyne's greatest love?
I hope you have a great weekend!
So, I briefly got a chance to write Misty Knight and Iron Fist in my first Marvel gig and I would love to write either or both of them again. I'm also a huge fan of the Young Avengers, Runaways, X-Men (especially Storm, Gambit, Rogue, and associated characters), Champions (especially Viv and Kamala), and a lot more. I also adore Cap and the FF, but the idea of writing those guys kinda intimidates me. They have a lot of very iconic stories. I'd also really love to write more Gwenpool, Mockingbird, and Wasps. Don't get me wrong.
Hmmm...ant fam as Kamen rider is interesting. It doesn't quite fit in my head, but I can't think of anybody that's really better.
Nadia, obviously.

SEEKING WRITING PARTNERS
hello, i am seeking writing partners for discord threads. i am also open to writing on here or other platforms, but i prefer to focus on the writing and skip the fancy formatting, icons, and all of that.
about me
name: d or dani pronouns: she/her/hers age: 25+ experience: 7 years of roleplaying, with recently taking a break for a few years. i also write professionally. timezone: PST (western us)
about you
age: 21+ experience: some would be preferred but i won't exclude someone for experience level. timezone: my schedule changes, so if you from a different country/continent, you may only get a daily IC reply or one a few times a week.
about the roleplay
length: i very much mirror my partners, so 1 - several paragraphs would be optimal. i just need something to build on and for it to be more than 1-2 sentences. type: I'm flexible with tropes, canon compliant, canon divergent, AUs, one shots, ideas on a whim, etc.! frequency: i am thinking i will be around daily/few times a week to reply at the least, but since i haven't done this in a year or two, we will see! just let me know how often you anticipate being able to write. ships: bradford/chen (the rookie) kiara/jj (outer banks) tracy/gordo (for all mankind) kate/mallory (cruel summer) bellamy/clarke (the 100) morgan/park (the good doctor) kit/elora (willow) wanda/vision (marvel) gert/chase (runaways/marvel) nancy/ace (nancy drew) trip/t'pol, kirk/spock (star trek) robin/nancy (stranger things)
if you want to write one of these pairings, please send me a message or DM with your basic information, interested pairings, and any plot ideas you may have! i usually can be flexible on the character I'm playing, but certain ships i may have a preference.

☕️ + Ben Grimm, the ever lovin blue yeed thing
An icon for a reason. The Fantastic Four have a strange "elder statesmen" role in the comics nowadays, typically seen as the universally respected OGs other heroes get compared to or have to consult. And Aunt Petunia's favorite nephew is in a strange position there of basically going from where the mutants are always perpetually stuck—hated and feared, seen as a dangerous, inhuman monster—to a guy people stop on the street so he could take a picture with their kids. And that's largely because of his elder statesman position, one he gained A) through proximity to the rest of the fantastic four, who are much more obviously human, and B) through having rivalries with people who are like him but are ACTUALLY dangerous inhuman monsters like the Hulk. His antagonistic relationship with such people position him as their antitheses in a way that benefits the public's perception of him. Think all the times writers have Captain America punch guy-who's-like-Cap-but-racist to demonstrate how VERY MUCH he's NOT like them—Ben being the Hulk's go-to rival does the same thing in the eyes of Marvel's public.
He's got a kind of unique perspective on the whole super-hero thing. He's seen the public at their worst and most hateful in a way that plenty of Marvel heroes have (Hulk, X-men, Peter Parker, the Runaways) but is accepted (and beloved!) enough to be positioned as much less of a radical than such heroes typically are. Hell, even Cap or Iron Man get positioned as enemies to establishment structures more often than him. At the same time, his background means he has a much easier time relating to the more publicly feared heroes in Marvel—he can party with the x-men while Reed and Xavier are feuding, he can end fights with the hulk with hot dogs and theological debates while other heroes are trying with everything they have to imprison Banner. He's the outsider on the inside, so he gets to have much more nuanced relationships with people in nearly every public position. That nuance is made all the better by him having one of the more fleshed-out personalities of the early heroes—hot-headed but quick to reconcile, often a jerk but more often a genuinely caring dude, boisterous and loud while sometimes incredibly insecure. It makes for great interactions and relationships.
I also like how arguably even more than other members of the fantastic four, he is inundated with comic book bullshit. Sure, Torch might have dated an alien or two—but he didn't marry a supervillain's daughter and raise two aliens from warring species as his adopted kids*. Susan might have worked for SHIELD—but she doesn't have half her colleagues and a good deal of her enemies on tap for weekly poker nights. He almost becomes a structural pillar of the Marvel universe's conceit—a walking bridge of connections between what should be totally and tonally unrelated characters.
Man, I should read more Thing stuff. I got myself excited just thinking about him.
*'That's not unique to Ben, what about Reed's Future Foundation?' Reed barely looks at the Future Foundation. The reason the members keep changing in-between titles is that he routinely drops them off to explore an alien world and forgets they existed, and not all of them make it back. I'm 100% sure Tong and her brothers had to figure out a way out of the negative zone on their own three times by now. Talk to me when Reed becomes a committed father to an alien.
