okay I've got a new take-

shoutout to @mellowheartbeats for their post connecting what Thomas said about Alastair being dangerous to the "break-up" scene!

okay so I think that maybe Thomas has not accepted that he's in love with Alastair??? it's so obvious that he feels that way and has felt that way, from before he found out about the rumor, however I can see him subconsciously denying his romantic attraction.

sexual attraction is different! he can tell himself that he's attracted to/excited by danger, he can trick himself into believing that's why he kept it such a tightly locked secret, etc. so alastair's comment at the end isn't really unfounded! he's very perceptive and understands thomas very well, and that's what tom thinks, too. except... him breaking things off because he doesn't want to be dangerous/unhealthy for thomas is,, exactly what someone who was dangerous/unhealthy for him wouldn't do? Would someone who was dangerous/unhealthy for him secretly risk his life every night to make sure he was safe?

after COI, this could be a very big dissonance for thomas, because he thought he understood his attraction towards alastair but if he truly was only attracted to the danger, why doesn't he feel less attraction now? Why is he more attracted to safe/healthy alastair than dangerous/unhealthy alastair? I swear I'm gonna insert myself into this book for the sole purpose of singing the muses' part of "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" every time thomas thinks about alastair.

tl;dr: thomas needs to accept that he's in love with all of alastair and go on long tangents to him about how smart and compassionate and lovely he is, the end.
