The importance of Mendel, the heterosexual male character, calling the audience to “take a stand”, not letting AIDS just be a gay man’s issue. The way he addresses Marvin too when he says it … after he’s gone they will keep fighting for both him and Whizzer.

march of the falsettos but theyre wearing this
Tumblr media
[id: a candid, low quality picture of four young men standing around outside at what looks to be a fair or theme park at night. they are wearing brightly colored 2010's era neon muscle shirts, green trucker hats, wristbands, and green bow ties. from left to right, their shirts read, 'all I do is fuck and party', 'show me your tits', 'party with sluts', and 'let's get fucking weird'. /end id]

i finally got a new job, after being out of work for a little over a year. it was a really difficult period for me, and obviously, the promise of more stability in my life cannot be understated. but something that i didn't realize was so heavy on me was my newfound ability to enjoy things without guilt.
like, i've been writing a lot of original fiction recently -- that's great! im getting published, and i could make money from that! but as such, any moment that i wanted to write fanfiction, or engage in fan content in any deliberate way, i felt horribly guilty. why spend time on something that won't give any profit? why are you playing that video game? why are you reading that book?
so many people told me "treat job-searching like it is a job. spend eight hours a day on it. dedicate yourself completely to that task".
but i just wasn't capable of that. i have a number of health issues, many of which are stress-related, and i would make myself physically ill under all the pressure and stress i was experiencing.
i just kept telling myself "you want to buy this book? you want to write this story? what have you done to earn it?" and then i would completely spiral. any moment i guiltily wrote down fic ideas or thought about those "non-profitable" concepts, i felt like i had done something worthy of punishment.
this job is going to be a major adjustment. i still have a lot of struggles and stressors in my life.
but i can go home at the end of the day and write about fictional people kissing each other, if i wanted to, and no one is going to say that i haven't earned it.
today's my first day. wish me luck! <3

Foo Thoughts - let's talk about Shifty's (old) song An Atheists Prayer
Chris's first Dead Peasants album was on my playlist a lot last year while I was deep in my Taylor feels (I say "was" like I am not anymore, sad lol). It's kind of moodier than any of Chris's stuff since, three songs in particular got a lot of play "Not Going Down Alone" which I have been convinced for years is about the Foo Fighters, "Death March" which fully made me cry a few times because it's so sweet and this one, "An Atheist's Prayer" which seems to be about wanting to help someone who is struggling but not being able to. For obvious reasons, that one hit different, despite being written in 2009ish and clearly being about a different situation. However, one night I was listening to it and something occurred to me that I had never considered before. What if it is actually about Taylor? specifically the London incident in 2001.
First, these are the lyrics (they are wrong in a few very key places anywhere I've seen them online)
It takes a tragedy, to get through to you and me It takes a tragedy, to see what’s next to me You went searching every road, but what were you looking for? Always a locked door, you chose to fight your secret war It’s temporary, that is all Hold you tight when you were falling Feels like you’ll sink forever, but when you blink, you’re coming up for air It takes a tragedy, to get through to you and me It takes a tragedy, to see what’s next to me Well, how many times was the gun to our head? But we never came up dead So close your eyes and we’ll cry for peace An atheist’s prayer will track for me⫮ It takes a tragedy, to get through to you and me It takes a tragedy, to see what’s next to me I wish I knew you better, I wish I would have been there I wish I knew you better, I wish I would have been there
⫮ this is the only line i am not 100% sure on but the last part is definitely "for me" and not "for free" as it is written on lyric sites
I'll point out that these are sadly pretty universally applicable and still just as poignant even if I'm way off. And also lyrics aren't necessarily about just one thing. I also don't mean this post to imply that I think that OD was T's COD, I really don't think it was, and this reading is independent of that. That said, lets see why this song might actually be inspired by Taylor.
The reason I had never made the connection before, is the last few lines (I wish I knew you better...) make it sound like the subject died. Which I had never really thought had tracked with other parts that were kind of hopeful. Or the "to get through to you and me" part. Much lesser so, the fact that he thought he might have not known them that well but was still affected enough to write the song.
But "I wish I knew you better" could also be in general (he still does wish that) OR in hindsight "I wish I knew you better [like I do now]". And I actually think this read makes the song hang together better.
It's not as talked about as much, because he was fortunate to avoid any sort of public incident like Taylor and flew more under the radar in the band in general - but young Chris, by his own admission, by early band interviews after he joined, and if a lot of his more recent song lyrics are anything to go by, loved to party. He seems like he tried all the drugs. He and Taylor were the younger guys and seemed to not show as much restraint as, say, Dave and Nate. They were both fans of the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll era of music and that lifestyle in a way that the others weren't. They were also both the only ones sober in more recent years. Even if they weren't super close (and I don't think they were, though I do think Nate, Chris and Taylor were closer then they get credit for, just from working together a long time and IMO doing most of the heavy lifting live) that (being sober in Dave Grohl's band) has to foster some sort of kinship/understanding.
It also makes sense, as the whole song is pretty much addressed to "you" and "our", which makes more sense if "you" is still around. I have always seen Taylor's OD as a wake up call for the whole band as young men. Dave has even said as much (it made him reach out to Jordyn). Additionally, I think, apart from Taylor, Chris probably needed it the most. And it seems like it worked, because it's when they all started settling down. Chris in particular seems like he was married/had his first kid by the end of 2003 or 2004 at the latest (his oldest started college in September 2022) after being flagged as the hardest partier in several early interviews.
All that to say, even if they weren't super, super, close, that would have have still be a very important milestone in his life. "I wish I would have been there" also kind of has the vibe of an AA mantra.
Regardless of the actual circumstances of the song can we talk about this devastating in hindsight line:
"How many times was the gun to our head, but we never came up dead"
Oof :(
I am aware could be way off, but there is not enough Foo Fighters content in the Foo Fighters tag so have a Sunday afternoon essay (you're welcome)

I know this might hurt to hear for some but the ending of Falsettos is the necessary climax and conclusion to all of the men's character arcs.
Bill Finn didn't write it just to be a downer ending. He wrote it so Marvin would have to overcome his misogyny and take on a caregiving role and so he could learn to rely on his family for support.
He wrote it so Whizzer would have to overcome his pride and allow himself to be cared for and loved. To bring him and his family together.
He wrote it to knock Mendel down from his g-d complex. To show him he doesn't have the answers, that he has to help his family process their feelings instead of just pretending everything is fine.
He wrote it to teach Jason to give up his king, to concede, to learn from his mistakes. To teach him about being a man.
Whizzer's death happens at the end of Jason's bar mitzvah because it symbolizes all four men finally growing up. Becoming men. It is their final step out of falsettoland. Ignoring the ending robs them of their growth.

Let me start with saying i love your blog really really much, this is something that has been rent free on my mind since Diasomia's arc started, is Malleus' father a dragon fae? I read the translations of chap 7 and i don't think i saw it mentioned, they just stayed vague on what kind of fairy he was, many fans started saying he was not a dragon, if that would be the case doesn't that mean Malleus is an half-blood!? The dragon bloodline isn't pure!?
Meleanor rejected many dragon suitors to marry the person she loved, whoever he was, why not say if Levan was a dragon or not, this is stressing me out. Especially since i saw the Crowley's theory.
Hi thank you so much for this question! I actually also wanted to address this, as I've seen some people (particularly on Twst EN Twitter and Reddit fandoms) who believe that the "Malleus is half Long because Levan is a Long" theory is canon. It's actually just one of the common theories which are:
He is a Long prince/noble.
He is simply a Raven fae. This is also why many believe that Levan is Crowley as both ravens and crows are collectively karasu in Japanese.
Let me put on a disclaimer that I'm leaning more on the theory that Levan might not necessarily be Crowley, but he is indeed a Bird Fae-- because his name does sound like Raven in the Japanese language, and the fact that Malleus' Platinum Jacket portrait has both Maleficent and her loyal raven Diablo in it. You are correct that there was never an explicit reveal on what he was though.
~ A short explanation on the first theory ~
So how did the first theory come to be? Because his official title in Briar Kingdom is 竜眼公 lit. Dragon Eye Lord. Some people have taken this literally and assumed that it means Levan is a dragon; more specifically, a Long. That's because the 竜 in his title is a kanji character and Twst happened to exactly distinguish in the Endless Halloween event an Asian Long 竜 (in kanji alphabet), and a western dragon ドラゴン (in katakana alphabet). Malleus specifies that he is a ドラゴン.
Now while theorizing that Levan is a Long is somewhat valid, it's less likely. Because a) it's common practice in Japanese to use kanji in formal titles and unusual to use katakana which is why ドラゴン was not used, which means b) Levan's "Dragon Eye Lord" title is just to indicate that he is Meleanor's eyes, as Lilia described him in the same chapter. This is also what Diablo's role is in the original movie.
~ Commenting on the theory that Levan is a Bird Fae ~
This is the most likely logical theory at this point, and you're correct that this means Malleus is half a dragon, half a bird. However, it's looking more and more like the fae are going with Mendel's Law of Inheritance with the Draconias' genes as extremely dominant that all other genes mixed in become recessive. Which means that while they're technically not pure-blooded dragons, the dragon genes will always appear in full view anyway so they might as well be pure. This is probably why Lilia mentions that the Draconias are "descended from dragons" rather than simply dragons. They may have varying fae species packed in their blood, but the dragon genes just completely cover them like a wallpaper lol.
Thanks so much for asking this! It was a fun write!

Whenever Marvin and Mendel interact, I rub my hands together like a cartoon villain and prepare to write another fanfiction about how imperfectly perfectly dysfunctionally functionally they would and wouldn’t work together but they’re also both in love with their respective partners.

Respect Women Who Write
Two things I found out about writers I like last year:
Taylor Jenkins Reid thanked her husband for taking care of domestic stuff so she could write and thrive like she's doing now.
Emily St. John Mendel got a divorce but couldn't edit her Wikipedia page because no one ever asked her about it in an interview. She got on social media to ask someone to interview her so she could edit her marital status on Wikipedia.
I'm actually translating a book about male writers' wives this year and the shocking things I read, I can never put them all into words. These two women's experiences hit me differently after I read about women who wanted to write or create reduced to just "the writer's wives".
I have mad respect for all of them, especially for Taylor Jenkins Reid who dared to demand the rights male writers have always had; for Emily St. John Mendel to get out of a marriage and be openly happy about it. Congrats to all women who got rid of the mindset that women need to be accessories to male writers.
