I posted a lot about the beautiful José de San Martín mausoleum in Buenos Aires and the statues of San Martín in New York and Boulogne Sur Mer. But I never posted about this monument
Tumblr media
this absolute gigantic monument is called “Cerro de la Gloria” -Hill of Glory in english- and it’s a monument in honour to the crossing of the Andes by San Martín’s army when after liberating Argentina he crossed the Andes and liberated Chile and Perú. In the bottom it reads “La Patria al ejercito de los Andes” -The Homeland to the army of the Andes in english- on top of that it’s San Martín and his granadiers in both sides. On top of San Martín and in the middle of the enormous rock repressenting the Andes it’s the coat of arms of Argentina. To the right there is a Condor flying, the largest bird on the planet -the longest is the Albatross but the largest is the Condor-, their natural habitat being the Andes. Fun fact, this is also why united states operation Condor in latin america had that name because of our beloved Condors in the Andes. Anyways, on the back of the monument, it can’t be seen from this perspective, there are sculptures of workers, woman, indigenous people. And on top of the whole thing there is a sculpture of an angel reppresenting freedom, in her hands you can see there is an iron chain broken in two parts symbolizing Argentina gaining our freedom from Spain. Another fun fact: this is also how our national hymn lyrics begin, the lyrics at the start of our hymn are “Listen mortals the sacred cry: freedom, freedom, freedom! Hear the noise of broken chains: see noble equality enthroned. It rises to the face of the earth a new and glorious Nation, crowned her temple with laurels and to her feets surrendered a Lion.” One of the national animals of Spain is the Lion. Alongside the angel there are more granadiers charging to glory and victory. The sculptures have the real human scale so it’s a pretty big statue. This monument is the andean city of Mendoza, this city was the city where San Martín started the crossing of the Andes mountain range to fight the spaniards in the other side of the continent. Mendoza is one of the largest and most important cities in Argentina, very famous for having huge vineyards and the best wines in the Americas, and also for being one of the most beautiful cities in all of Argentina. Some pictures: Mendoza city entrance:

Mendoza vineyards:
Tumblr media
In the last picture one can notice that this part of the Andes mountains in Argentina is actually very arid and not covered in trees, almost like a desert if not for the vineyards in the picture. So, how are there so many vineyards in Mendoza and so many trees in the city like in this picture of Mendoza famous canals:
Tumblr media
whelp the answer is actually thanks to the indigenous people that lived before Mendoza city even existed, long before the spaniards came to murder them. Indigenous people are always very closely connected to nature and they know very well their land and take care of it very dearly unlike europeans and their dirty virus outbreak cities drinking their own shit and destroying all their trees. The indigenous community, The Huarpes, that lived in Mendoza before the spaniards arrived created very complex aquaducts that transported very clean and cold glaciar water melting from the Andes mountains to their cities. When the Spaniards arrived they massacred and killed them, their language and culture was lost, and upon their burnt homeland and houses, the city of Mendoza was built. But the stupid spaniards quickly realized the water problems a city in a desert would have and decided to keep the water canals the indigenous communities built with stones in the past. Their culture may be gone because of europeans, but their spirit of knowing how to take care of nature still lives on and thanks to them if you ever visit Mendoza you wouldn’t even notice how can such a green city with so much vegetation and so many flowers and plants and irrigated vineyards and wines can exist in the middle of a freaking desert. José de San Martín was a mixed, half blood european and half of his blood was indigenous. And he never ever forgot about that. He fought hard for decades to gain our independence from Spain, what he did for his homeland could have been enough for us, but not for him. He crossed the second highest mountain range in the world with freezing blizzard temperatures and close to no oxygen and thousands of people with one dream, to share our freedom and kick the shit out of europeans from this continent, and he did. Thanks to him and his granadiers sacrifice not only Argentina exist as a sovereign state, but also Perú and Chile.

Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires is an amazing city. One of my favorites. The architecture of Paris, the nightlife of Barcelona, the culture of Latin America and the food.. the food of the best steak houses in New York City. I spent 20 days in BA, and loved every minute of it. Below are my 3 must do’s and 1 skip for the city of Buenos Aires. See my other posts on Patagonia, Mendoza and the Iguazu falls for more on Argentina!
Must do’s:
1. Tango show & steak dinner (but not together!).
I think all the popular shows listed on other websites (https://www.solsalute.com/blog/best-tango-shows-in-buenos-aires or https://www.buenosairestogo.com/things-to-do/which-is-the-best-tango-show-in-buenos-aires) are generally good… they vary by production value, size and skill level - similar to ranking Broadway shows. We went to 2 shows (Madero Tango and Tango La Ventana). Madero Tango had really impressive dancing and was a bigger venue. The views of the water are great. After the show they do a little tango lesson for anyone that wants to stick around. They also push the Casino on you – which we went to after our lesson. Overall good experience. Tango La Ventana was in a smaller setting and had the band right on stage. The production value wasn’t as good, but watching the band interact with the performers made the show more enjoyable for me. Either way – do not get the dinner. There are so many good places to eat in BA that you should not settle for the ‘wedding style’ food at the performances. Get dinner and drinks before, then enjoy the show and a bottle of wine.
Tumblr media
As far as steak dinners go, there are too many good places to name. I went to Don Julio (twice). They do a really good steak. Don’t worry about reservations, go a bit early (around 8pm) put your name in, and enjoy the free Champaign on the sidewalk while you wait. There is also a cool wine bar Vinosfera Wine Gallery down the street if your wait is longer than an hour. El Nuevo Castel's is a more local spot where the steak is good and cheap. You won’t get many tourists here – which is refreshing. Parrilla Cero5 is a good spot – in the center of town – and more of a traditional steak house. Finally, Café San Juan is a ‘contemporary’ steak house, with a cool open kitchen and good atmosphere. Again, these are the places I went, but in Argentina, you can’t go wrong with steak and red wine.
Tumblr media
2. Afternoon in San Telmo/La Boca (especially on a Sunday)
Something that I really enjoyed doing – and you don’t need an agenda. San Telmo market is a great spot to grab some lunch and look at the shops. It is open every day – however – on Sunday the streets around the market turn into a sort of ‘sidewalk sale.’ The Market Burger, La Fabrica del Taco and Hoboken Beer Point are all good spots in the market for food. Plaza Dorrego is cool to check out – and will also have the ‘sidewalk sale’ going on.
After San Telmo, you can continue to walk down towards Parque Lezama – we made a stop at Napoles for a drink which has a pretty unique inside. Eventually, if you keep walking you will get down to the La Boca neighborhood. Cool graffiti, and local atmosphere. We were able to get dinner from a few people grilling on the street. There are also some good bars in the area to grab a beer. Area is safe and fun. While we were there a parade was going on (which seemed pretty typical for the area).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Night out bar hopping in Palarmo
Palarmo is the ‘hipster’ area of BA. The ‘Brooklyn’ if you will. This is where most of the new bars/restaurants are, and where a lot of the younger crowd hangs out. Here you will find no shortage of ‘craft beer and burger’ bars and ‘speakeasy’ style cocktail lounges. That said, it is worth checking out a few places and spending a night hopping between bars and restaurants. Some of my favorites were: Post Street Bar - Graffiti Bar - I liked this place a lot - cool art and an upstairs. Rey de Copas/ Boticario/ Parque Bar Botanico – cocktail lounges. I like Rey de Copas because of its upstairs rooftop. Temple Palarmo / DIGGS Armenia – expat bars with a good vibe (and more outdoor seating). Uptown – New York inspired bar with a real NYC subway car.
Tumblr media
Can skip:
1. Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Café Tortoni, and the Plaza de Mayo and La Casa Rosada
I am not a big museum guy, and the thought of walking through the ‘national museum’ – especially on a beautiful day does not appeal to me. There are plenty of other parts of the city that have much cooler exhibits and are a bit off the grid. Instead of going to these ‘tourist’ destinations, I would skip and plan activities at some of the other – lesser known – but still super fun attractions: Palarmo race track/polo grounds; Ricoletta cemetery; Ricoletta cultural center - this was actually one of my favorite places - it has art exhibits, a terrace, a bar, classes and movies - really cool space and good place to hang out for an afternoon; Microteatro – mini theater/bar; Bars in the old railway tunnels (Avant Garten); Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur - for a relaxing walk and views of the water (pro tip - bring a picnic!); Cooking class - cookly is a good website, you can also try AirBnB experiences.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other places that are worth checking out:
Coffee: Viva Cafe/La Noire Cafe/Full City Coffee house - good spots to sit, get breakfast, have a cold brew and catch up on admin
Healthy Lunch: Cafe Registrado - get the Limonada here (or anywhere). It is like a fresh mojito without alcohol
Bars: Doppelganger Bar - best martini in BA - hands down
Other notes:
-No one in our group spoke good Spanish and we were able to get by. It helps to know the basics - some verbs/vocab words ('where is' 'do you have'...), but nothing beyond that. A lot of people will have a very basic knowledge of English - and if all else fails, use google translate.
- I was there in the fall (spring in the US) and it was 75 and sunny most days in BA. Highly recommend this time of year. Based on what people said there (and the Bourdain episode) things are a bit calmer in the city in January (think less things open, less nightlife) - as lots of locals take holiday. It is also VERY HOT in January.
- Uber stinks there. It works, but for some reason drivers do not like picking people up (especially foreigners). From the airport always use Taxi as your Uber will cancel on you. I would use Taxi as much as possible - only downside is you need cash.
- Cash is a nightmare. Most ATM's will only allow you to take out the equivalent of $100 USD and they charge either a $5 (Link ATMs) or $10 (Banco ATMs) fee. Also, lots of ATMs will have long lines and run out of money. We brought USD to exchange, but the line at the bank was so long we all just used our Schwab cards and took out money each day. Most newer establishments take credit (and things that are expensive like fancy restaurants definitely do) but lots of local spots and taxis are only cash. If you read about a black market - those sites are out of date - Argentina is now on a global exchange rate and the banks are just as good as 'black market' rates.
- SUBE is the subway and its super easy to use. Only thing is you need to first buy a card outside the station (at the equivalent of a 7-11 store) - look for the SUBE sign. Once you have the card, you can top up in any station, and the rides are around 30 cents. Traffic is really bad - especially around 5-8pm so highly recommend taking the subway during that time vs. cabs.
- One last thing, BA is a LATE city. Embrace the siesta culture. Get up and do some activities in the morning - take a nap - grab dinner around 10 and head to the bars around midnight. It sounds late but after a few days there, you get used to it. And its not just 20 somethings out to party, its whole families that get dinner at 1am, have wine, and dance well into the night.

Camelid figurine
Date: 1400–1533
Geography: Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, or Argentina
Culture: Inca
Medium: Alloys of silver, gold and copper
This male camelid figurine, potentially representing a llama, has a solid head and a hollow body. While many similar camelid figurines are made of hammered sheet, X-radiography confirms that this figurine was cast by the lost wax method (see image 3) in two distinct casting stages to achieve different metallic effects. The first step was the casting of the llama’s head (see image 4), neck, torso (see image 5), and tail (see image 6), as well as its legs, with a silver-copper-gold alloy. As part of this first step, the wax form of the torso was modelled around a ceramic core that now forms a hollow space within the camelid’s body (the space is not visible to the viewer as it has been covered over by a silver metal plug at the chest, visible in the X-ray). The second casting step was the creation of the head and upper or rear elements of the body and tail in a more gold-rich silver metal. This second casting operation was accomplished by casting directly onto the solidified silver-rich portions. X-radiography reveals extensive porosity throughout most of the silver metal areas, a feature caused by gas trapped in the molten metal during casting, which contrasts with a lack of porosity in the gold-rich areas. This difference suggests that the second step in casting may have been undertaken to correct flaws or areas of weakness associated with the porosity in the first. XRF analysis of the two metal elements indicates that the silver-rich metal contains approximately 72% silver, 20% copper and 7% gold while the more gold-rich areas contain roughly 50% silver, 42% gold, and 8% copper. Following casting, the metal worker employed tracing and engraving tools to form the details of the inner ear, the eyes, the nostrils, the mouth, and the toes. The object may be considered a huaca, a Quechua and Aymara word for a sacred being among Andean peoples. Huacas may take the form of artificial anthropomorphic or zoomorphic objects, as well as rocks, mountains, and mineral sources (Cruz 2009). Throughout the Andes, camelids, including two wild and two domesticated species, are prized for their wool and meat (Moore 2016). For the Incas, their human ancestors, along with camelids, were thought to have come into existence from a cave at Pacariqtambo. In the Andes, camelids, whose hides and bones were turned into a range of products, are charged with carrying goods as part of caravans. Camelid figurines may be components of the Inca ritual performance of capac hucha, a Quecha term meaning ‘royal obligation’, in which, according to 16th century Spanish chroniclers (Cieza de León 1959, 190-193; Diez de Betzanos 1996, 46, 132), could involve annual celebrations in Cusco where prophecies were given for the coming year as well as sacrificial offerings of llamas, maize, and children, whether as a dedication to the Sun or for particular royal events, including the Sapa Inca’s death. As part of this performance, in some cases, juveniles were ritually married in Cuzco and then sent on processions to points as far north and south as Isla de la Plata in Ecuador and Cerro El Plomo in Chile, respectively, where they were sacrificed and buried, wearing textiles, and accompanied by dressed metal and Spondylus spp. shell figurines, ceramic vessels, and other shell and metalwork. The motivation of the capac hucha was to commemorate particular royal events and to mark the expansion of the Inca Empire. However, such figurines may have been deposited with other intentions, and without human burials. In one case, four camelid figurines in metal and shell were recovered in a line oriented to the southeast and in association with stones related to the usnu, or altar, of Cuzco as part of the dedication of sacred space in the Haukaypata, or main plaza of Cuzco (Farrington and Raffino 1996, 73). Camelid figurines were occasionally designed with special ornamentations, such as those seen on two figurines from the region of Lake Titicaca, including the attachment of a textile blanket adorned with gold appliqué and cinnabar (AMNH B/1618) and a highly corrugated surface to index the texture of the animal’s pelage (AMNH B/1619). These ornamentations, or inherent aspects of the design of the figurines, testifies to the ways that metallurgists distinguished their ritualized work. At present, there is little archaeological indication of production sites for these figurines, but Spanish chroniclers point to Cuzco. Many Inca camelid figurines in metal tend to be around the height of 1974.271.36, but there are exceptions (such as the two aforementioned AMNH figurines) that are larger, at 23–24 cm. The height groupings of the camelid figurines are in some way comparable to those of the Inca anthropomorphic figurines in metal but appear to show a bipartite rather than a tripartite grouping (see McEwan 2015, 282, n. 15). In Spondylus spp., the heights of camelid figurines may range from approximately 2 to 7 cm without clear groupings across that range. It should be recognized that many of the sites from which these figurines have been recovered are sacred to local indigenous communities (see Aguero 2004, Fine-Dare 2009, and Politis 2001 on the display of human remains from the mountaintop capac hucha site of Llullaillaco in Argentina). Eleven camelid figurines in silver, gold, and Spondylus spp. were associated with the human male juvenile’s grave at Llullaillaco but none was found with the two human female graves (MAAM 2007, 52). A hollow camelid figurine, made of gold-silver-copper sheets joined mainly by solder, was recovered from the capac hucha burial of a 7-year-old human male at Cerro Aconcagua, also in Argentina (Bárcena 2004). While camelid figurines are often found with male capac hucha burials (King 2016), a strict gender correlation is not clear. At Choquepujio, in the Cusco Valley, a Spondylus male camelid figurine was found resting in a Spondylus valve associated with the Inca burial of a female juvenile (11–12 years old) inside a pre-Inca temple (Gibaja et al. 2014). In excavating a burial of a male juvenile (6–7 years old), investigators recovered two Spondylus female camelid figurines. In these assemblages, camelid figurines were social actors, having their own camay, a Quechua term that could be translated as “energizing power,” through interaction with other assemblage components and with the human actors that made and deposited them. The deterioration of these objects, or their removal from their original locations in the earth, has surely changed their efficacy.
The Game, Falling Down, Ant-Man) .
A Little Night Music (Películas: Chicago, The Terminal, Ocean’s Twelve) .
He chronicled the trip on Instagram, where his photos and reflections on life soon attracted hundreds of thousands of followers and got him featured by National Geographic and The Paris Review. Jed now narrates the adventure that started it all: the people and places he encountered on his way to the bottom of the world, and the internal journey that prompted it -- the question of what it means to be an adult; his struggle to reconcile his sexual identity with his conservative Christian upbringing; and his belief in travel as a way to "wake us up" to our lives back home. As he writes in this account of his search for wonder and a life he could believe in, 'It's not about the bike. It's about getting out of your routine -- and that could look like anything." from New Items https://highland.sparkpa.org/opac/extras//unapi?id=tag:open-ils.org,2020-09-12:biblio-record_entry/8726928/SPARK&format=opac

Is your definition of vacation a time to get away, unwind, and simply relax?
Not everyone is looking for an action-packed vacation full of activities that can be posted on social media every few minutes. For many, the idea of just stepping away from the routine and busyness of everyday life is a thrill of its own.
So if a relaxing vacation is exactly what you need, then it’s going to help to know the most peaceful destinations on the planet.
We’ll take a look at five of these top destinations
1. Tulum, Mexico
While others flock to Puerto Vallarta or Cabos San Lucas, those who want to relax and unwind head to Tulum on Mexico’s Caribbean Coast.
One of its major attractions for those looking to get away is Playa Paraiso, or Paradise Beach. This secluded, palm-fringed beach of gorgeous white sand bordering calm and clear waters remains relatively quiet.
Start your day either just lounging in the rays on the beach, or perhaps swimming and snorkeling among the fish. As the afternoon rolls around, you can enjoy a cool drink and authentic Mexican cuisine at one of the bars or restaurants along the beach.
If exploration is more your idea of relaxation, there are Mayan ruins towering over the sea in Tulum. In fact, Tulum was once a walled city that was built by the Mayans.
There is an abundance of well preserved archaeological sites to explore. Among the best are El Castillo, the Temple of the Frescoes, and the Temple of the Descending God.
You may also poke around the sacred caverns of LabnaHa Eco Park, or snorkel in the underwater caves at Cenote Dos Ojos.
2. Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada
If you crave the quiet of the mountains when you’re looking to escape your everyday life, then consider the small hamlet of Lake Louise.
Located just off the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) in Banff National Park, Lake Louise has a small shopping center with a grocery store, bar, deli, bakery, sporting goods store, and visitor information center.
They also have a wide variety of restaurants and accommodation options.
Lake Louise is much smaller and quieter than the town of Banff. And this smaller intimate setting allows visitors to truly take in the mountain views and perfectly blue waters — whether from a hiking trail or simply out the window of your hotel room as you relax.
3. Ubud, Bali
Although the town of Ubud in the uplands of Bali, Indonesia, is known as a center for traditional crafts and dance, it is surrounded by rainforests and terraced rice paddies.
It’s also dotted with Hindu temples and shrines, and the site of ancient holy sites including the intricately carved Goa Gajah (“Elephant Cave”) and the rock-cut shrines of Gunung Kawi.
You may be familiar with Ubud if you read Eat, Pray, Love. It makes perfect sense that Elizabeth Gilbert would have chosen this peaceful locale with its many options for relaxation.
When you plan your trip, check out some of the amazing yoga retreats in this area. And as one of Asia’s top spa destinations, you can indulge in a Balinese massage for complete surrender.
Finally, if you want to enjoy a good laugh, head to the nearby nature reserve of Monkey Forest Park and laugh along with the long-tailed macaques.
4. Blue Lagoon, Iceland
If you’re more drawn to the cold than the heat, then head to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. This geothermal spa spot is by far the most popular tourist destinations that Iceland has to offer.
There’s really nothing else on the planet like this region renowned for its barren landscapes and cone-shaped volcanoes. Dark black lava fields with creeping grey moss serve as a contrast for the beautiful milky-blue water that makes up the lagoon.
Though it may sound chilly by description, the water remains at a temperature of 102 degrees all year. This makes it a wonderful place to bathe, soak, and replenish both your skin and your spirit.
You can soak in those warm waters even when the temperatures are freezing. And on clear nights during certain times of the year, you can even take in the incomparable beauty of the Northern Lights as you bathe.
The lagoon is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland and is only a 15-minute drive from the Keflavík International Airport, and a 30-minute drive from the capital city of Reykjavík.
This makes it the perfect place to stop when you first arrive in Iceland, and before you leave.
5. Mendoza, Argentina
Mendoza, Argentina, is best known for its Malbec wines.
Though even if you’re not a wine connoisseur, you’ll find peace and calm in this sunny cosmopolitan city.
As you wander its tree-lined streets, you’ll find a number of world-class spas where you can spend the afternoon. Then dine later in one of their terrific restaurants.
Mendoza is less than a two-hour plane ride from Buenos Aires. But it couldn’t be any different from the larger bustling city. The laid-back energy of Mendoza encourages visitors to slow down and take their time. Long wine-fuelled lunches are the norm.
And it’s not unusual to drop dinner plans and lay out a blanket for a picnic instead. Watching the sunset over the Andes makes the perfect backdrop.
Downtown Mendoza is picturesque and it’s very easy to find your way around the city. Many would argue though that the true Mendoza experience lies in visiting the vineyards found in the small surrounding towns and rural areas.
There is no public transportation available to these more rural locales though. There are tour companies that offer all-day wine tours.
But you may want to rent a car or bicycle to make a truly relaxing day of exploring the wineries and the countryside. Just be sure you have a designated driver!
Kick Back and Enjoy Your Relaxing Vacation
Whether you’re going to sit back and catch up on your reading, practice yoga every day, or just walk in the woods, you have many destination options for your relaxing vacation.
We hope that it’s everything you ever wanted!

Hovercraft to the Isle of Wight
Photograph: Colin Burdett/Alamy
The hovercraft trip between Southsea (Portsmouth) and Ryde may well be the worlds only passenger hovercraft service, and its one of the most exciting rides you can take. That moment when the craft rises ponderously from its haunches, then slides gloriously sideways into the sea is one of the most exciting bits of any journey I ever go on. Theres the feeling of flying in fact, the reality of flying without any of that tedious business of getting to an airport and climbing into an aircraft. Those hovercraft go fast a shame its over in 10 minutes, but you get to see Victorian forts in the Solent and other interesting marine craft that traverse the channel. Yes, its noisy, but my, its fun. From about 24 return, hovertravel.co.uk Matthew
Free tram, Melbourne, Australia
Photograph: Getty Images
There could not be a more charming way of exploring Melbourne than the City Circle tram, a quaint Burgundy and Gold W6 class tram, with glossy wooden bench seats and panoramic views. It trundles around a circular loop of the city centre, with the rolling commentary sharing anecdotes about the history, buildings and parks. You can hop on and off all day between Melbournes vibrant centre, Flinders Street and the pretty waterfront. It is the saviour of travel-worn feet, a wonderful novelty and, best of all, its free. ptv.vic.gov.au Anna Kennett
Medelln cable car, Colombia
Photograph: Getty Images
For under $1, you can glide smoothly out of the citys centre to barrios on its lush surrounding hills and even further into the cloud forest on cable cars, part of Medellns metro network. This transport is not only cheap and convenient for locals but is a wonderful way to take in all of the different flavours of this fabulous city. Line L takes visitors to the Arv Park nature reserve, with its miles of trails and bountiful wildlife. A fifth line (Line M) is due to open this summer as the network expands. medellincolombia.co Eleanor
Alilaguna water bus, Venice
Photograph: Getty Images
If you reach Venice by air, buy your tickets for the Alilaguna water bus from Marco Polo airport and follow the well-signposted route to the jetty. We found the linea rossa boats frequent (they run twice an hour in summer) and clean, and the staff were helpful. A cheap and unhurried trip across the lagoon via the Lido and Murano, with a stop near Piazza San Marco. Incredibly scenic. Returns 25 between airport and Lido, alilaguna.it Lynn
Wine-tasting by bus, Argentina
Quilmes fort. Photograph: Alamy
Doing a wine-tasting trip is brilliant if you use the bus. The Mendoza-bound 339 from Salta to Cafayate follows a route through steep rocky valleys, dusty, cacti-covered hills and flashes of surprisingly lush green vegetation to deliver you 190km south to some of the countrys best vineyards in beautiful Cafayate, well known for its Torronts grapes. Youre almost certain to be the only tourist on the 339, and if you stay onboard for another hour youll arrive at the ruined fortress of Quilmes atop a hill that commands a majestic view of Tucumn province. Tickets from around US$10. The 339 is operated by Flechabus.com.ar but other bus companies operate between Salta and Cafayate, including transporteaconquija.com.ar Alex
Sleeper from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Photograph: Ian Atkinson/Alamy
We booked the SE2 Reunification Express overnight train from Ho Chi Minh in the far south up the east coast to Da Nang, taking about 18 hours. What a great experience. Soft(ish) sleeper, lots of stops, the opportunity to talk with locals on and off the train, and fascinating sights along the way. Dinner of two boiled eggs, accompanied by rice wrapped in a banana leaf, was tasty and filling. Its not fast or luxurious, but beats flying hands down. Sleeper from about $50 one way, vietnam-railway.com Mike Kilbane
Derry to Coleraine train line, Northern Ireland
Photograph: Alexander Cimbal/Alamy
Trains in Ireland are as rare as hens teeth in this day and age but those that do exist boast some of the most spectacular and scenic views anywhere. Particularly the 45-minute Derry to Coleraine journey which Michael Palin described as one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world. Hugging the unspoilt coast of the north-west of Ireland, this journeys highlights include Downhill Strand (where Stannis Baratheon oversaw the burning of the statues of the Old Gods for you Game of Thrones fans) and Mussenden Temple perched on the clifftop above the railway. 10 one way, translink.co.uk Catherine
Ferry journey, Alaska and the Aleutians
Photograph: Danita Delimont/Alamy
Instead of expensive and environmentally harmful cruises, take the Alaskan State Ferry between Bellingham, Washington State (just across the border from Vancouver), and Juneau, the Alaskan capital. It runs at the least weekly and takes about 60 hours. The accommodation may not be as smart as a private cruise but the scenery is the same and your fellow passengers are much more interesting. You can continue your journey along the Aleutians to the remote port of Dutch Harbor on Unalaska island perhaps the most remote place you can ever get to by public transport in North America. Ive been on the ferries twice both memorable journeys subsidised by the Alaskan taxpayer. Adult from $418 (Bellingham to Juneau), dot.state.ak.us Simon Fowler
Historic railway near Patras, Greece
Photograph: Charalambos Andronos/Getty Images
Train journeys dont get much more dramatic and technologically interesting than the Odontotos rack railway between Diakopto and Kalavrita in Greece, south of Patras. The journey covers 22km and takes 68 minutes as the train winds its way through the Vouraikos gorge, a geologic area recognised by Unesco. To allow for the ascent of 750 metres, a cog or rack system kicks into effect at certain points on the route. Youll move through towering cliffs, with rushing waterfalls below and a canopy of plane trees above. The destination, Kalavrita, was the scene of an infamous wartime massacre, marked by a moving museum and memorial site.
