木瓜[Boke] Chaenomeles speciosa

木[Boku|Moku] means tree, 瓜[Ka] means gourd, and the reading of the name is a corruption of bokuka, bokka, mokka or mokkō. When the weather warms up a little more, it will bloom flowers similar to those of Ume(Prunus mume).

彼は、何か恐いことをするやうな氣持がした。庭には麗らかな日の光りが當つてゐた。大きくなつた木瓜の蕾は鮮やかな紅を含んでゐる。而して、これから日毎に暖かに長閑になつて行く希望の多い日に憧がれの瞳を見張つてゐるやうであつた。 これを見るにつけて、彼は心に重い苦しみを感じた。其れは、彼の欅の木を切らなければならないからである。彼はこの木瓜も、欅の木も、皆な同じ運命の下に生を樂しんでゐることを思つた。其の一つを理由なくして切ることは罪でなくて何であらう。

[Kare wa, nani ka kowai koto wo suru yōna kimochi ga shita. Niwa niwa uraraka na hi no hikari ga atatte ita. Ookiku natta boke no tsubomi wa azayaka na kurenai wo fukunde iru. Shikashite, korekara higoto ni atataka ni nodoka ni natte yuku kibō no ooi hi ni akogare no hitomi wo mihatte iru yō de atta. Kore wo miru ni tsukete, kare wa kokoro ni omoi kurushimi wo kanjita. Sore wa, ka no keyaki no ki wo kiranakereba naranai kara de aru. Kare wa kono boke mo, keyaki no ki mo, mina onaji unmei no moto ni sei wo tanoshinde iru koto wo omotta. Sono hitotsu wo riyū naku shite kiru koto wa tsumi de nakute nan de arō.] He felt like he was about to do something terrible. The garden was bathed in glorious sunlight. The swollen buds of Boke contain a vivid crimson. And, they looked as if eyes were gazing longingly into hopeful days, which would become warmer and more peaceful day by day. As he saw this, he felt a great distress in his heart. This is because that he had to cut that tree of Keyaki(zelkova) down. He thought of this Boke and the tree of Keyaki, all enjoy living under the same fate. If it is not a sin to cut one of them down without reason, what is it? Born to a skilled swordsman, Mimei was taught kendo from the moment she could hold a sword properly in her hands. When she wasn’t following her father around, she spent time with her grandmother, playing Shogi and listening to fairy tales. 

When her ability first presented itself, at her grandmother’s funeral, her father quickly had her sent to the detective agency to keep a watch over her and to keep her ability in check. 

Mimei has a very stubborn personality and is quick to anger and throwing tantrums to get her way, but can also be rather smart.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙞𝙨 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙗𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙧/𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙧 𝙞𝙣 𝙚𝙭𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙣 𝙝𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙩/𝙪𝙣𝙗𝙞𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬. SENGKARUT (Intertwined - Eng) is a compilation of six short stories written by several prominent Japanese authors. Those stories were translated into Bahasa Indonesia and was published by Penerbit Mai @penerbitmai . I was quite amazed with the choice of short stories as well as the writings. Why oh why? I dun know how to put it into words but the Japanese authors always have a way to tell such stories through the allegories they use. Some are so absurd. Some are hard to digest. Some make you lost wondering the purposes of what the authors try to convey. Ogawa Mimei for example uses the personification of an angel for the chocolate candies. People will buy and eat them before throwing the rest to the waste bin. It's prolly a message: something sweet will never last long but the sweetness will remain as a memory. I fall in love with two stories here. The first one is Di Bawah Pohon Sakura (Under the Sakura Tree) by Kajii Motojiro. It tells the readers that there are corpses laying under a beautiful Sakura tree. The second one is Bunyi Misterius (Mysterious Sounds) by Natsume Soseki which tells about a man suffering from cancer and is hospitalised. From her room, he could hear a strange sound from the next door. Both stories tell me a lesson of life through the allegories there. The first one seems like telling me not to judge things from its beauty while the second one tells me that the saying, "the grass is greener on the other side," is completely non-sense. It's definitely book worth reading esp for those who want to expand their preference on Japanese literature. Thoughts before reading: Excited to read a classic folk tale or short story that isn’t Western!

Favorite Quote:(s)

“When he was a child he thought the surface of the ocean looked flat as a straw mat, but the rippling, violent sea was nothing like that now.”

Rating: 4/5 (Spoilers ahead)

What did you like: This story’s strengths come from its simplicity. There’s a twist when the ghost ship appears, and another twist when it turns out that days haven’t actually passed, that ghost ships haven’t appeared. I think this idea could be even better adapted in a modern, longer format, but nevertheless, the story is effective and mysterious.

What did you dislike: I thought the language was too simple, but I don’t want to actually criticize it, because this is a translation and so I feel I can’t judge it too much at that level. I do think that the ending was a little abrupt, but that’s probably from the fact that it’s a classic and reads like an oral folk tale.

Would you read more by this author: Sure, I enjoyed it!

Bisque Dolls | Mariko Wakatsuki Mariko Wakatsuki may be Japanese, but her work is quite similar to that of Western artists. She opened her studio, Atelier La Lune, in Japan in 1989 and has produced lines of porcelain fairy dolls in large editions. She also exhibits one-of-a-kind or small-edition porcelain dolls at solo exhibitions. Before studying dollmaking at Ecole de Simon, Mariko did not have any experience with dolls. She was inspired by Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolism paintings, and she decided she would create works in three dimensions, rather than two. She believed dolls to be somehow similar to paintings because they express the world through imagination. Mariko is a bibliophile, and books are the root of her creations, so she seeks literary essence in her dolls. She is especially fond of Danish author Hans Christian Andersen and Japanese author Ogawa Mimei. Through their tales, she learned about good will and the meaning of happiness. Through her dolls, Mariko hopes to deliver love, dreams and hope to all who enjoy them.

Kalau aku cari di KBBI arti kata sengkarut itu "berjalin-jalin, melilit-lilit" dan turunannya bersengkarut "tidak keruan, tidak menentu". Itulah memang "after taste" yang ditimbulkan oleh setiap cerpen yang ada di buku Sengkarut ini. Isinya ada 6 cerpen dari 4 penulis klasik ternama. Edogawa Ranpo, Natsume Soseki, Kaiji Motojiro, dan Ogawa Mimei. Kalau aku boleh bilang dari mulai cerpen ke-1 sampai cerpen ke-6, punya tingkatan kesemrawutan dari level terendah sampai level tertinggi. Kebetulan cerpen ke-6 ini judulnya "Kursi Manusia karya Edogawa Ranpo". Setelah baca cerpen ini langsung diem dan ada perasaan gelisah yang bercampur dengan kesal bergelut dengan logika yang bilang " Ini cuma cerpen kok, ga bakal ada yang kayak gitu". Dari ke-6 cerpen hampir semua berkesan buatku, tapi yang punya kesan mendalam selain kursi manusia, ada malaikat permen coklat dan bunyi misterius.
