I should preface this by admitting that I am incapable of choosing Just One. like, ever. that said, this year I really really liked Tseng Jing-Hua's, Yu Shuxin's, and Omid's acting!!! so so good

20. What's something you learned this year?

I learned sO much this year but I think one of the most important things I've made progress on was learning how to hope 💙

3. Describe the creative process of writing a chapter/fic

i sit and stare at the blank doc. i wail, i sob, i scream. i stare some more. eventually this will lead to words

no but actually if it's a new chapter of something i've been posting, i'll go back and read the previous chapters to make sure i'm not stepping on my own toes. then i'll decide what the purpose of this chapter is. how is the plot advancing? what about the characters? are there any emotional developments i'm working towards that need to be hinted at? where am i in my outline? do i need to change anything?

and then i scream again <3

31. Do you start with the characters or the plot when writing?

characters! i tend to focus on which characters i want to play around with and then figure out a plot that allows for whatever emotional journey i want to take those characters on.

i've written fics just because i wanted to make a character cry hehe

((I actually forgot the tag game had a response part to it so I was like '!!!' and really excited and happy when I logged in and saw both your and @owlpockets' messages in my inbox omg 🙈))

Yes! The Lan Wangji fic! So this is very much a piece that has been in the works for a long time (around 2020 is when I started writing it, I believe?) I paused writing it due to a) getting stuck at one point and b) taking a distance from the MDZS fandom as a whole. But lately, I've been re-reading and trying to find some new wangxian fics, and it's really ignited my love to rewatch the drama again and work on the Lan Wangji piece again!

It's set during the early years of Wei Wuxian being dead and Lan Wangji mourning him, and how when he's left to his own solitude and healing his mind won't stop playing scenarios of what would have happened if things had gone differently. He's essentially haunted by losing Wei Wuxian, and the ghosts won't leave him be. Literally - at one point - as in some of his dreams a piece of Wei Wuxian's spirit visits him whilst he's playing inquiry, but it's much too weak to hold any form other than a small orb of light.

It's a piece I love working on because I've been getting a bit creative with the formatting (which, if I ever get around to actually finishing and posting it to the AO3, RIP to me trying to fight the formatting gods). Here's an extract of it I still have:

Ohoho!

Yes, i've had the idea for this one for what feels like ages, but never quite knew where to take it... then i found there's going to be a woh/tyk/shl horror zine and i thought: "that's perfect"

The style is a bit experimental for the first part, but we'll see how that turns out when im done.

I can't say too much about it tho, only show you this little excerpt - actually the only thing i had written of this idea until i decided to expand it to apply for the zine!

Jinwang is wide eyed, pale, like he's seen a ghost and he throws his prayer beads at Zhou Zishu in what looks like a knee-jerk reaction.

For a second they seem to catch at Zishu's chest, as if he has remembered they were supposed to hit his body, before they continue, unobstructed. Behind him he hears them clacking against the wall, unto the floor and when he follows with his eyes the wooden beads clatter to the ground. He expected them to scatter, maybe for the string to burst, but instead they just fall. The prayer beads dont bounce, dont roll over the hardwood. They land where they fall like a fat coin purse, like a wet sack of rice or the heavy smack of fresh viscera.

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year

Okay, so this is a slight cheat as it's a line in a fic that isn't yet published but I wrote it this year so it counts. I really like the imagery in it. "Thank you. I—" He goes to say something else, as if he can untangle the brambles growing in his chest to form something that would be close to an unravelling of the maelstrom within. He can't. "Ah, just... thank you."

Character opinions: luo fumeng?

When I think about Luo Fumeng I'm always thinking about her with the girls of the Department, or with Qianqiao, or with WKX, therefore "works better in a dynamic". And I say wasted potential but I was pleasantly surprised with what we did get, I just want mooore. She's so complex and I feel like we barely see the tip of the iceberg with her, I could rant for hours.

17.  What writing habits or rituals do you have?

Not...all that many, haha. When I'm in super productive/creative mode, I tend to have a word document or notepad to write stuff down during slow periods at work, or I'll write in the evenings. A lot of times I'll do sprints on my own (set a timer for ten minutes) and usually I have music playing, but not 100% of the time.

30.  Favourite idea you haven’t started on yet

Oooh, tough question. Here's a couple from different fandoms I keep batting around in my head but haven't done any real work on yet:

The newest one is probably the lovingly entitled Percussive Maintenance; basically Sam's memories get at least partially unlocked from one of the like five concussions he gets during Downloaded [BSG]

A BSG/Star Wars crossover; either the Clone Wars trio (plus Rex and maybe Padme) wind up on a basestar (either during the skipped year or during the first half of S3); the Clone Wars trio has a Mortis-esque experience on Kobol while the first landing party is stranded there; something with the Rebels crew and Sam's people on Caprica...there are others too but those three are generally the most present in my head lol

An Obianidala power/roleswap one-shot that I've been planning for the Year of the OTP meme. [SW]

Shifting Alucard's S3/4 timeline by six weeks (basically what happens in the S3 finale is interrupted/forestalled by Greta's messenger) [Castlevania]

And because five is a nice round number--an Avatar Zuko AU [AtLA]

((my Les Mis ideas i am at least semi-actively working on/have started so they don't count lol. and honestly there's a lot of fun crossovers with either bsg or star wars that float in and out of my head at leisure, and some things that i have been poking at that i don't plan on sharing, and. ...yeah my head gets crowded sometimes lol))

40.  Share some backstory for one of your characters

Going to stick to SW since I think that's the primary fandom you and I share and I will pick........::spins wheel of characters:: Kira!

Okay so Kira is an OC of mine who has hopped worlds like. five times. She started out in AtLA, meandered into one of my original worlds, and also into Star Wars.

Basically, her deal is that she's a seer. In Star Wars, this means she's Force-sensitive, obviously. She's also a bird because birds are cool.

I generally play with her in connection with another OC belonging to a friend of mine who is one of Alex and Zeb's kids; Kira's around her age.

Her people have their own native Force traditions--they call Force-adepts Wise Ones--and not a lot of interaction with the Jedi Order before it fell. Kira is the first Wise One with this level of True Sight in a while. She basically got picked up by an Imperial Remnant officer (or, depending on the timeline, just an Imperial officer) who kept her hidden as his Secret Weapon. Generally in a pretty gilded cage, but still. She either manages to escape on her own or gets found by Alex who's investigating why this particular faction has So Much Intel They Shouldn't. He promptly kidnaps/rescues her and brings her home.

(I also did a fair amount of playing with/building up some details for her species. Primarily seed-eating, although they will eat insects for extra protein as well as vegetables; males tend to have brighter coloring than females; young are generally pretty drab grey-brown, with adult plumage coming in starting around sixteen; some teenagers like to paint their feathers to look older than they are.)

Currently working on:

As an ongoing writing project, I find myself turning over some Kinn x Porsche x Big ideas in my head smut it’s mostly smut alongside my usual hair-pulling over lack of linear plot for my hanwenzhou agenda. 

In terms of art, I’ve just finished a big mural project for my sister (painting a jungle feature wall for my nephew’s new room!), so my art reserves are quite depleted right now. That said, I have a cat cross-stitch that is going at a snails’ pace (it’s been a year and a bit already), and my architectural plan of Lotus Pier is... developing. Slowly. Slower that I wanted. But, progress is being made.

ooh, sunflowers?

it's very much not finished but it was inspired by this field of sunflowers that grows near my family's summer cottage in south western finland. the area is really beautiful overall so I thought, what if lando and luke retire to a planet similar to that, and luke grows lando sunflowers?

it already has so many finnish elements in it and I plan to just. put it full of finnish elements that I've grown up with. star wars could stand to have more finnish elements in it written by an actual finn

Oof, i think she had so much wasted potential. I mean they really gave her some interesting backstory and relationships to other characters (mainly Yu Qiufeng and Luo Fumeng, tho i also like her tense dynamic with WKX) but i felt like they didnt really do much with it.

Imo the plot beats with Yu Qiufeng were overdone after the 2nd time and her ability to change her face was absolutely under-utilized. Not to mention the end of her character arc was super unsatisfying! It just felt like it was cut short due to time constraints, which i can understand, but it still bums me out :(

Really loved her interactions with Du Pusa tho! I can see why ppl like to ship 'em!

Also why did her face look like that? Her burn scar was practically invisible when it was revealed lmao. I mean, she's beautiful despite looking like she used too much foundation and it caked on a bit, but i guess i wished the visuals would have matched the dialogue and her struggles a bit more.
