L: Me (June 16, 23) - - R: Sahar Kazes, IFBB.
Since I was a teenager, I've had 3 or 4 goals that haven't changed with the years ... One of those goals, is to ... Yep, to become a musclebro. Or a gymbro. Or whatever people call them now - - I mean, my brother used to be a personal trainer back then, and I loved seeing him getting massive, and all the good vibes and positivity he used to exude. Then, he left the fitness world because of, well... Things unrelated to what I wanna say. I tried the musclebro thing back then, but my brother never understood I was just a newbie with a lot of stuff and problems on his mind... So, everytime I went to his gym, I ended up sore for two weeks!. So, long story short... I avoided training with him like if my life depended on it! ... and ironically, didn't have a lot of motivation or self esteem to go anywhere else to workout. My cousin followed my brother steps though, and he is right now what I still want to be. A biker musclebro. We don't talk a lot, but I feel happy for him. Genuinely happy.
But, anyway... The thing is, I've kinda hated when people have told me silly things (and this is an understatement!) for talking about this goal. Not a surprise that many people assume that: Bodybuilding/Going to a gym/Getting muscled = Becoming arrogant, dumb, or an obnoxious man... Sure, some dudes who go to the gym are that way, and some like to be that way but because (according to my own theory) they already were that way! Besides, there's always SOMETHING to learn about this world: Either a new routine, or a diet, or how your muscles work, or which workout will help you with which muscle, or the chemical components of what you eat daily, how to do a correct meal prep, supplements... Even those who use roids have to learn A MASSIVE TON of stuff. I remember my brother used to train a couple dudes when they were getting ready for a competition, and, maaaaan... Tons and tons of information.
Started going approximately a year ago, and, well... My diet is not the best one... Yet. But I like the testosterone rush I feel everyday after a good workout... And I don't consider myself a brainless, dumb dude... Nor planning/thinking about going that way.
...Honestly, F those who disencourage YOU from doing what you'd love. Get your gymspiration (or whatever inspiration you need to do good things) anywhere you need it!
And, yes. Getting big, hairy (test, minox... you name it), a couple tats, a sweet bike when cash allows it... BEING HAPPY WITH THE WAY I LOOK... I mean... Why not? I love that idea. Maybe I fell in love with the action stereotype from the 80s (yep, 80s/90s kid… Former trust fund kid anyway but that's a VERY different story mwhahahahaha), and, seeing that, and my brother, made me love it until today. I still want that!. The roid thing... I'm not exactly partial to it for myself. If it makes your boat float, go for it dude! In my case... Well, MAAAAAAAAAAYBE if I were a pro bodybuilder, an IFBB one, maybe/whoknows/i'dtryit/whatever... I'm not condoning its use, though! But, my motto is never say never!
For me, well, right now, seeing those giants at my current gym is a MAJOR inspiration. Can't talk to them or befriend them because, well... Issues to make friends, can't/don't know how to... (Thanks high school, you damaged me so much my ability to make friends got ruined forever).
Anyway... Just wanted to talk a bit about it.
So, yep. Still wanna be a musclebro, bro.
PS: If anyone reads this, I'd love to read your comments! Thanks for making it this far!.
I mentioned to a coworker that I start playing around with old cameras. It started with a Minox 35. That spiraled out a control into a now pelican case full of 35mm and 110mm cameras.
He said to make sure I come to work the next day. Next time I saw him, he gave me 3 cameras. This was one. Putting a test roll through it now. His price…keep fixing the machines he operates.

The book series that got me back into reading again
I used to devour books. Not a day would go by where I wasn’t reading something even, and especially, to the detriment of my sleeping schedule. I always had a book with me. (Bless Miss Ross in Algebra 2 for never once reprimanding me for reading in class instead of listening to the lesson)
Then.... events happened. The internet makes it so easy for me to be distracted by mindlessly scrolling and looking at funny pictures of cats. I also had depression and didn’t do anything I enjoyed. I worked weird/long hours and was too tired to focus on anything. Eventually, I fell out of the habit of reading all the time. Books didn’t really grab me as much.
Yet I still kept buying books and trying, because my love never truly faded. I just couldn’t get invested in most stories, and so unread masses were left to collect dust on my bookshelf. It was a tragic sight to behold.
But a couple years ago while once again wandering the bookshelves at a local bookstore, one in particular caught my eye. A Murder of Mages by Marshall Ryan Maresca. The title piqued my interest, as is usually the start. The summary: even better.
Satrine Rainey is a wife and mother of two who fakes her way into the Maradaine Constabulary as an Inspector (a staunchly male career, but an ex-spy raised by the harsh streets knows how to work the system). Minox Welling is an Uncircled mage (but that’s not something we talk about in polite company). Jinx, as the other Inspectors call him. Too smart, too obsessive for his own good. Why not throw the outcasts together to try and solve ritual murders of Circled mages?
A blend of crime drama, fantasy, and political intrigue, I was hooked from page one. I read an entire book in a matter of a couple days instead of struggling for weeks to get through one chapter. Satrine and Minox wormed their way into my heart and, more importantly, my brain. I needed to know more. About the characters. About Maradaine. About everything.
And wasn’t I just lucky enough that the sequel was right there waiting for me and my ability to click 1-day shipping on Amazon?
An Import of Intrigue continued to enthrall, this time delving into the wider cultures of Maradaine and its surrounding countries. Diplomacy and foreign relations are at stake when a foreign dignitary is murdered. Satrine has been exposed as a fraud, though with the success of the last case, she gets to stay on as an Inspector. Minox is confronting more what it means to be Uncircled and his powers may be getting too much for him to handle.
While Maradaine itself has a sort of fantasy England feel to it, none of the cultures feels like a direct counterpart to any real place. Whether they be Racquin, Fuergan, or Kieran, each culture is inspired by real places and cultures, but is entirely unique to this world. Maresca’s world building is such an incredible thing. Nothing feels like it’s been left out and I’d completely trust the author to teach a detailed history class on how Maradaine came to be, and leading up to where we are now in the story. A class I would thoroughly enjoy, much like the protagonist, Dayne, from Maresca’s Maradaine Elite series.
Yes. There are several connected series all taking place in Maradaine, and while focusing on the specific protagonists, do intertwine with each other at times. Minox meeting the mage college student/vigilante Veranix from the Maradaine series was a subtle yet impactful moment. I had originally just planned to only read the Maradaine Constabulary series. I didn’t want to go too crazy thinking I could actually read books again like I had before. So I didn’t seek out his other work at first, obstinately avoiding them.
I started in on a different book series by a different author and found that I could read that one just as well. (Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. This time a YA novel. Still fantasy. Still full of that sweet, sweet political angst that I love) I managed to read a couple other books. Different authors. Different genres. Fiction and nonfiction. I felt like myself again. I was actually reading again. Didn’t matter if it was physical or e-reader. I was there.
I’ve since delved into all the other Maradaine novels. (I’m working my way through Way of the Shield before I start in on A Parliament of Bodies) There is so much life and love put into all of his works and it shows. It’s apparent that Maresca cares deeply about what he’s saying about people in his novels and the kinds of representation he puts in his novels. Minox and Veranix are mixed race. Satrine and Kaiana (a close friend to Veranix) have their own agency and are often more competent than their male counterparts.
Which is another thing I’d like to briefly touch upon. The women in all of the books are so varied in terms of personality and goals, and it’s so refreshing to see so many well-rounded female characters when so often there are only three different two-dimensional archetypes to choose from. Even those that have smaller roles shine through, and Maresca’s use of POV characters works instead of feeling like I’m being jerked around from character to character.
There’s a lot I could say about the individual books, and I barely touched on the other series, but I highly suggest any and all of them to put on your reading list. You won’t be disapointed. And maybe, like me, you’ll be reminded why you love reading so much.

Clément Marion, a French photographer in his early twenties, shoots only with analog processes. In his latest project, he decided to use wet plate collodion to capture intimate portraits of burn victims.
Warning: This article contains graphic images of burn victims.
“My first contact with this world was during childhood; there was one in my village,” says Marion. “Much later, I heard an interview which asked this question: ‘When was the last time you saw a major burnt person? Haven’t you seen any? These people are hiding.
“This sentence touched me, so I asked myself how to help this cause, [and bring] acceptance of others, … advocate tolerance.”
Marion had also wanted to try wet plate collodion photography for some time, so he decided to combine both his objectives in 2020.
Photography has always had an omnipresent place in Marion’s life for the past fifteen years. He started photography very early on when his father presented his sister with a compact camera, which he used for some time. That was his first contact with photography. He then had his own camera, ultimately moving on to Minoltas, a Rolleicord, and even a miniature Minox.
The first film that Marion developed was in college when he was nineteen, and he was instantly in love with the medium. He enjoyed the fact that he could accomplish everything with his own hands, from the shoot to the darkroom processing. Digital photography, even today, does not interest him at all.
Last year, Marion, who has never taken photography courses, spent the first half of 2020 practicing his collodion skills by photographing his friends. Then he was ready for the project. He had heard about the process from Sally Mann, one of his favorite photographers. Collodion to him was the “highest photographic process, but also the most random and complicated.”
The Sinar F2 4×5 is his camera of choice, a 135mm lens and 8-10 Multiblitz X10 AC/DC flash heads to light the subject and the background in a rental studio. His plates’ sensitivity is approximately only 3-6 ISO, and therefore he needs that many flash heads to get a good exposure.
Flash gives him the convenience of not having to have the model stand still for long exposures. The 4×5 collodion plates are scanned on an Epson Perfection V850 Pro Flatbed Photo Scanner for online use and making prints.
The wet collodion process has a significant disadvantage: the entire process, from coating to developing, has to be done before the plate dries. This gives the photographer no more than about 10-15 minutes to complete everything. Marion has to use a rental studio with an attached darkroom for his project due to this difficulty.
His first model had to travel to Toulouse, France, where Marion had his set up then. He found her from her Instagram, which she had set up after her accident. In that first shoot, he had chemistry problems but managed one good plate from the session.
“I welcome people early in the morning; I present the laboratory and the protocol from start to finish,” says Marion of the morning introduction. “At first, I lacked training, it was 4 or 5 plates per afternoon, but towards the end, I reached 10.”
As he gained expertise, he had to worry less about lighting and chemistry. He had figured out the shape he wanted to give to the series, and things followed more smoothly.
In between the session, Marion serves a meal and discusses the project. They can view the photos already in the series and ask him questions.
“Often, that’s when we bring up each other’s stories. It’s a crucial step, especially to introduce the shot,” the photographer explains. “Some have had accidents. For others, it is about aggression [assault]. I usually guide the models, especially to make them feel comfortable at first. But of course, I am open to suggestions. It’s very important to stay that way in these cases; everyone has something to bring to a shoot. It’s a four-handed work.”
Marion has shot twelve subjects so far but always shoots only one angle/pose for each person even if he exposes multiple plates.
“The parallel between this [collodion] texture and that of the scarred skin of burn survivors is obvious, [and therefore] I decided to use wet collodion for this project,” explains the artist. “This film dries little by little from the preparation for the shooting, until at the end of the development of the photograph. Eventually, it hardens, retracts, sometimes cracks, and often changes color. These are also the main characteristics of burn scars.”
The negative emulsion is made up of two main elements, among others, collodion and silver nitrate. Separately, they are both used in medicine for wound healing. The collodion as a bandage, and the silver nitrate, in the form of a small stick, allow burning a poorly healed scar to direct the skin’s re-healing. Together, these two elements form a photographic emulsion similar to a thin skin spread on a glass plate.
Marion also has a book (hopefully) to be published by crowdfunding (PetaPixel asks all crowdfunding backers to do their own due diligence as we do not endorse any project). It is a 6×8, 50-page book that will be sent free of charge to around fifty health professionals, who will use it as a support in their medical procedures with their severe burn patients. It will feature photos as well as “a small writing participation from each of the people photographed.”
When asked how long he’ll continue to work on this series of burn victims portraits, the French artist replied: “Forever, I don’t know, maybe when I’ll think that I have what I need.”

The latter, when the shops close (which sadly is the case of many shops right now in Hong-Kong) quickly get covered in adverts and posters, and then I like shooting them. I had just framed this one when this woman walked right in front of me and the camera, and stopped to rummage her bag. Then she seemed to notice me just as I was snapping the shot. I didn't expect it to come out particularly well (I was hyperfocusing, but when you're that close to the subject it rarely works) so I'm actually quite happy with this. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #rawurbanshots #streetclassics #hongkong #hkig #hongkonginsta #streetphotographers #killeverygram #streetphotography #bwstreetphoto #ig_street #streetshot #street_photography #streetphotos #life_is_street ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #minox35ml #kodak #tmax400 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #filmphotomag #shootfilmmag #filmfeed #lonelyanalog #filmismorefun #thefilmcommunity #filmwave #back2thebase #deathb4digital #FilmShootersCollective #analogfeatures #believeinfilm #filmisnotdead (à Causeway Bay, HongKong) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEtQLstnWcE/?igshid=1cgxssjs073lm

A Parliament of Bodies
Marshall Ryan Maresca
Genre: Fantasy
Price: $7.99
Expected Publish Date: March 26, 2019
Publisher: DAW
Seller: PENGUIN GROUP USA, INC.
Mixing high fantasy and mystery, the third book in the Maradaine Constabulary series follows Inspectors Satrine Rainey and Minox Welling as they track down a dangerous murderer. The city of Maradaine is vexed by the Gearbox Murders: a series of gruesome deaths orchestrated by a twisted mechanical genius. With no motive and no pattern, Inspectors Satrine Rainey and Minox Welling--the retired spy and untrained mage--are at a loss to find a meaningful lead in the case. At least, until the killer makes his most audacious exhibit yet: over a dozen victims in a clockwork deathtrap on the floor of the Druth Parliament. The crime scene is a madhouse, and political forces conspire to grind their investigation to a halt. The King's Marshals claim jurisdiction of the case, corruption in the Constabulary thwarts their efforts, and a special Inquest threatens to end Minox's career completely. Their only ally is Dayne Heldrin, a provisional member of the Tarian Order, elite warriors trained in the art of protection. But Dayne's connection to the Gearbox Murders casts suspicion on his motives, as he might be obsessed with a phantom figure he believes is responsible. While Satrine and Minox struggle to stop the Gearbox from claiming even more victims, the grinding gears of injustice might keep them from ever solving these murders, and threaten to dismantle their partnership forever. http://dlvr.it/R1YJYV
NEW HAVEN. Feb. 27—Has Frank Merriwell been turned on? Is the traditional boola-boola of Yale being replaced by plain boo, which, translated from the underground argot, means marijuana?
This gothic campus has become the scene of intense discussion of the use of marijuana—discussion that several self-possessed undergraduates described as a “constructive dialectic.”
The now chairman of The Yale Daily News, N. Strobe Talbott 3d, called for the legalization of marijuana in his first editorial: the local police are stepping up the activities of their Narcotics Squad; a small but intense band of evangelists is warning students of the dangers of narcotics; the university psychologist has just sent out a questionnaire to a random 10th of the students to find how widely narcotics are used, and increasing numbers of undergraduates are speaking knowledgeably of “grass” (marijuana) and “acid" (LSD).
Question of Acceptance
“The drug scene ? We do pretty well in our own small way,” said a freshman from Holyoke, Mass. “Although we have a certain acceptance problem—the true Yale vice is alcohol. I’ve taken it as my mission to turn on all the straightest people I can find, like football players. I’d really like to meet someone on the polo team.”
Such an attitude is disturbing to a nine-member group of Christian fundamentalists called the God Squad. In the last week they have prepared leaflets, taken an ad in the college paper warning that “Satan is establishing a beachhead for narcotics at Yale now” and held a meeting.
“Most of the boys are not aware of what could happen to them spiritually,” one of the fundamentalists. Ken Gravely, said as the group met in the semi darkened chapel. “There are two forces in the world, and while they are on LSD they could be taken over by an evil force and robbed of their souls.”
Not Only the “Hippies”
Some students said the use of marijuana was not confined to an underground clique of “hippies”—youths who reject the dominant mores of middle-class society—but extended to the outwardly respectable, although nobody has yet been reported turned on at Morey’s, the eating club that is the stronghold ol Old Blues.
“On some nights when you walk past the colleges you can smell the odor of pot coming out the windows, and a lot of juniors and seniors will sit around and smoke and listen to music when their dates come down from Vassar, because it’s hard to get at girls’ schools,” one dark-haired, bespectacled undergraduate said.
Statistics—the backbone of Yale's political science department—do not exist on how many students have used marijuana. Estimates range from a dean's estimate of 1 per cent to one hippy’s vision of more than 40 per cent.
There is general agreement, however, that the use of marijuana has increased tremendously in the last few years, as it has at most colleges. Several reporters for the student newspaper who have been investigating the problem estimated that 20 to 30 per cent of the undergraduates had smoked marijuana with different degrees of regularity. They said there was only one small group of steady users, relatively little use of LSD and no known use of heroin.
Some Added ‘Fetishes’
“The whole thing is very Yale.” a freshman said. “It’s done in a very restrained manner and there are lots of sophisticated fetishes, like water pipes and hashish.”
“Like when you make a contact here,” he added. “You visit some guy, and then you compliment him on the way he’s redecorated his room, and ask him how he likes ClassiCiv 25, and make small talk for an hour before you can ask for some grass.
“A lot of these guys are smoking in their rooms now because they tried it out with the hippies, but then they figured, ‘Grass is nice, but why should I have to be with all those unsavory people?’”
The New Haven police arrested three Yale juniors and a local girl in mid-December, charging them with possession of two pounds of marijuana. The case has not yet been tried, but two of the juniors have resigned from the university; the third has been permitted to continue his studies until the case is decided.
The arrests appeared to be a breach in the traditional laissez-faire attitude of the police toward the youthful transgressions of students. “Narcotics are on the upswing; it’s the smart thing to do for many of these students,’' said Inspector Stephen Abeam, the head of the recently reorganized and strengthened New Haven Narcotics Squad.
“We’re combatting it with hard investigations and some informants,” Inspector Abeam said, adding that there had been no arrests at Yale since December.
Among students who use marijuana there are constant rumors that men with earphones are wandering the basements and that city, state and Federal authorities are competing with each other’s investigations.
One confirmed user carries a Minox camera hidden in a book to photograph people he thinks are following him.
Dean John A. Willkinson, chairman of the university executive committee, said in an interview:
“We really don’t feel we have a serious problem. Most,of the students we have come across are not restricted to an offbeat, nonconformist alienated group. They’re really very straight arrows in terms of what society expects of them.”
But at least one student’s room, high in an ivy-covered Normanesque turret, resembles an outpost of New York’s Lower East Side, with the furniture cut down to inches above the floor and bare mattresses scattered about.
As several hirsute young people, dressed with studied shabbiness, contemplated their hookah one night last week, a well-scrubbed neighbor, impeccably attired in a tuxedo for the college band’s concert, dropped by for a visit.
“You might not think so,” he said, “but it’s really hard to play the bassoon unless you’re properly dressed.”
