The evolution of My Pretty Pony and her packaging. The first version is the predecessor to MLP, the second one came out during Year One (1983), and the third one was sold in Year Two (1984).

Year 0 - My Pretty Pony
My Pretty Pony, effectively acts as Generation Zero for the My Little Pony franchise. Created by Bonnie Zacherle and released under Hasbro's Romper Room division in 1981, the My Pretty Pony was larger and less stylized than the eventual My Little Pony franchise.

Profiles in Villainy
Nightmare Moon
Long ago, Luna and Celestia were the diarchs of Equestria, a land inhabited by ponies. Every morning, Celestia would raise the sun, and every evening, Luna would raise the moon. Together they maintained the balance in perfect harmony. As time went on, however, Luna came to see how the ponies would be awake to enjoy the day; how they loved, admired and appreciated Celestia's work. And yet they seemed to shun the night by sleeping through it, taking no time to admire nor appreciate Luna. This caused her to become resentful and jealous of her older sister.
One day, Luna became fed up with Celestia's success and admiration. Not only did she refuse to lower the moon, but she also challenged Celestia for the sole rulership of Equestria. At that moment, the darkness in Luna's heart manifested and consumed her, transforming her into Nightmare Moon, a black mare of pure darkness. Celestia did not want to fight her younger sister and begged her to lower the moon, but the dark alicorn said her only royal duty was to destroy Celestia, and shot at her elder sister with magic beams, eventually knocking her down. Seeing no other way, Celestia reluctantly used the Elements of Harmony to overpower Nightmare Moon and banish her into the moon, creating the phenomenon known as ‘the Mare in the Moon’ (a unicorn's face imprinted upon the surface of the moon).
Some time later, Celestia was able to disabuse Luna of her anger and jealousy (I’m guessing through the power of friendship). This freed the pony from her moon-based prison and enabled her to return to Equestria.
Actress Tabitha St. Germain provides the voice for Nightmare Moon with the villainess first appearing in the debut episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, airing on October 10th, 2010.

My Pretty Pony
EDIT: I'm planning to use this pic as a bigger close up for my Neocities website, My Little Nostalgia. I made a page for My Pretty Pony as I don't know how to click and enlarge the photo code.
My Pretty Pony from 1981. I ordered it from EBay nearly ten years ago and it was only $20. As it turns out, it did not come with accessories and the lever is broken. The lever is supposed to make her eyes blink, ears twitching, and swooshing tail. I have no way to fix it as I’m too scared to take it apart(can’t figure it out how to open either).

I picked up another My Pretty Pony on eBay for a surprisingly low price. She took about 3 hours of work to get near mint.
Not only was her hair a mess, but she had some body damage, missing paint, and the wax coating on her eyes had gone white and chunky.
Of course, in typical me-fashion, I didn’t take good photos of the damage before repairing it. Sometimes I get laser-focused on fixing and forget about documentation.

I always thought the Show Stable and Pretty Parlor were introduced in Year 2 (1984), but here they are in the 1983 Sears Wishbook alongside the Collector ponies! (And reissued My Pretty Pony.)
This does make sense since both playsets have references to the Collector ponies. Their symbols are on the flags of the Show Stable and the Pretty Parlor has name tags for the Collector ponies.
Also, there's a rare flat-foot version of Peachy. The flat foot Collector pony mold, the earliest one, had a tendency to fall on its nose so somewhere in the middle of Year One it was replaced with the similar looking but less tippy concave foot mold. Which points to some Peachy's being produced quite early. By Year 2 the flat foot pose was totally phased out.
