Четверговая соль 🎶

А этот четверг пусть скрасят песни, из которых льётся невыносимая лёгкость бытия.

У этой песни есть синтушно-писклявая версия, но там музыка забивает текст и вокал - а на этот, аккустический, вариант Lovelytheband сняли клип, и не зря. Незатейливая песня не приподносит каких-то грандиозных сюрпризов. В инструментальных частях - милая тема с вариациями, предприпев строится на движении вверх-вниз, мелодия часто топчется на месте (как в припеве - небольшой скачок вверх и плато). Текст для меня сводится к одной, но щемящей строчке: I could be lonely with you.

Гитары много не бывает (да, это мой любимый инструмент). Меня завораживает потенциал этой песни: она радостная почти до надрыва, кажется - темп побыстрее, электроинструментов и ударных побольше - и вот вам готовая панкуха. Но такую мощную энергетику запихнули в попсовый медлячок, и он крут! По композиции интересно, что предприпев использовали в конце как бридж (и он вполне подходит для этой великой миссии). Меняющийся темп не даёт заскучать, а текст о начинающейся новой любви прекрасен целиком, но самое-самое - "Now I'm jumpin' up and down, she's the only one around and she means every little thing to me".

Песня с альбома 2010 года, которая могла быть записана в 1980-х, отчасти благодаря электроинструментам и безмоциональному вокалу, напоминающему "Аббу" и "Баккару". Припев не особо отличается от куплета благодаря единому акцентированному ритму, который ещё и подчёркивается повторами слов. Бридж неожиданно появляется в середине песни после припева и перед следующим куплетом. В тексте немало математики (метафорической, конечно), самое классное - "Two wrongs will not make it right".

И вновь Imagine Dragons (терпите))! Нет, я не специально, они слишком хорошо рифмуются с Mynabirds и Lovelytheband. В куплете мелодия держится на вокале, однако и у ударных в аккомпанименте тоже есть свой мотив. В припеве радует стакатто (когда It's - o - kay... поётся по слогам), которое подчёркивает такой мантровый, аффирмационный характер текста. Впротивовес ему - мелоличный протяжный звонкий бридж на пассажах сверху вниз.

Интро ну о-очень похоже на Broken, и вышли эти песни в один (2017-й) год. Время было такое, очевидно;) однако в целом Heartbreak Century более энергичная. С вступлением вокала инициатива в музыке переходит от фоно к гитаре. И, честно признаюсь, фортепиано мне тут не хватило - его вообще можно было пихать везде, где нет вокала, хоть бы в инструментальную части бриджа, но не случилось. Кстати, в качестве бриджа здесь выступает начало первого куплета с минимальным аккомпаниментом - с одной стороны, ничего принципиально нового он не привносит, но с другой - не выбивается из общей картины, да ещё и открывает второе дыхание перед финалом.

I don't actually have any SasuNaru AMVs though - I was a Kingdom Hearts creator mostly, and Sims :).

The Richard Swift Collection Volume 1: The Novelist/ Walking Without Effort Richard Swift (Secretly Canadian) (The Novelist originally came out in 2003, Walking Without Effort came out in 2004 but was always paired with The Novelist; this reissue is from 2018)

Richard Swift was a multi-instrumentalist who has a long history in the music business first beginning as a musician for The Promise Keepers (yes, that organization) as well as other Christian bands. He eventually came to his senses and got out of religion altogether (he took to calling God "Weird Beard") and set up shop as a record producer and a solo artist. He has produced records for the likes of The Mynabirds (their debut, What We Lose In The Fire We Gain In The Flood, which I have always thought was a jewel of a record), Pure Bathing Culture and Foxygen. He later joined The Shins (in 2011) and was the touring bassist for The Black Keys in the mid Aughts.

I only just discovered him via God's Jukebox, a site where members post the song that has captured their attention over the course of a week (or for some, daily) much akin to This Is My Jam, if anyone even recalls that site (mostly those who do were posters there and are now on God's Jukebox). Swift's music puts me in the mind of Nilsson and even to a certain degree, Lindsay Buckingham. Most people on God's Jukebox consider him akin to John Grant, but I am not a fan of Grant at all. If you dislike Grant like I do, don't let that comparison stop you from checking him out. Swift is one of those multi-talented musicians with a great voice, a supreme sense of melody, who can play just about any instrument. You hear one song from him and get a strong sense of what his work will sound like and this double dose of his early music doesn't disappoint at all.

These two albums constitute Swift's first two solo albums and he has been packaging them together since he released them as The Richard Swift Collection Volume 1. Below you can see the cover without the obi, followed by the gatefold and then the back cover sans obi.

Below are the four sides of the two albums. The first two labels are for The Novelist. (For the life of me I cannot explain why the camera fails to show the white ring around Side 1 yet shows it clearly on Side 2. Curse digital photography...digital anything, actually.)

Swift died in 2018 of alcoholism. At the time of his death he was preparing two albums. One of those, The Hex, has been released. I'll be delving into this guy's back solo catalog for certain! This is a grand discovery for this music fan. I'd be remiss if I failed to mention one of Swift's recording mates who is all over both of these albums is Frank Lenz. Lenz recorded an album for Hidden Agenda which was a label out of Champaign, Illinois, an affiliate of Parasol Records, one of my all time favorite record stores before they closed up shop and became a strictly mail order business. I have, somewhere in my attic, both of Lenz's solo albums (Conquest Slaughter and Vilelenz and Thieves) that the clerks at Parasol convinced me to pick up!
