Lorn Song of the Bachelor

“Lorn Song of the Bachelor” is a roleplaying-game adventure set on a stretch of upland river, haunted by an enormous undying crocodile -- 

set also inside said crocodile’s belly.

It is inspired by the story of Bujang Senang, the “journalism” of Mastika, and the fact of the candiru.

“Lorn Song” is the first RPG adventure I ever wrote.

I wrote it mainly on Sharon’s laptop, at a table in a largely-empty tom yam restaurant, as she trained for her first muay-thai fight at the gym upstairs.

Work rarely comes so quickly and so clearly to me. And though “Lorn Song” has expanded, since -- its core remains unchanged: a ruined dungeon that is also a crocodile’s belly and also hell.

“Lorn Song” is the first RPG thing with my name on the cover, I think!

Nadhir Nor is also on the cover, because his art is so essential to what the book is.

With cartography by Karl Stjernberg, layout by Dai Shugars, editing by Fiona M Geist and Humza Kazmi.

Dedicated to Robertson Sondoh Jr, who helped playtest the module, and made its first hack and fan-art.

Published by Hydra Cooperative in collaboration with Exalted Funeral.

NADHIR NOR

Nadhir Nor is a 25 years old Malaysian artist based in Sungai Buloh, Selangor who is very much interested in all things otherworldly. Nadhir graduated in 2015 from The One Academy with Diploma in Illustration. In the year 2018, Nadhir was invited to be the resident artist for the Rimbun Dahan 2018 resident program.

Nadhir explores mythology, ancient cultures and its relationship with modern society among many other subjects. He believes that there’s something about finding the otherworldly in the mundane and vice versa is what makes a story worth to be told and he strives to share as much magical body of work as he can to the world. He always try to explore and relate them back to the modern society and try to see how our more contemporary subjects and themes such as mental health, social capital and gender/sexual identities can be explored between the two, between the ancient and the new.

Nadhir art endeavor not only on paintings or drawings but ranges from self-published art zines, animated short films and murals. This is a way for him to share and show the world about his artworks.

Nadhir Nor is an illustrator from Malaysia. 

He’s been an avid art fan since his youth, but only got serious about making art in high school after stumbling upon the creations of amateur artists on DeviantArt. Nadhir views art as more than just a collection of lines and colors:

“A close friend of mine recently pointed out how spiritual art can be and how it keeps our body-spirit relationship intact and I do concur. Art is probably the most efficient way to remind ourselves what it means to live, to experience life and not just survive through it. It’s our spirit basically using our body to paint, act or sing to keep each others’ spirit alive and make sure that we don’t end up as just ‘bodies’.”

Some of Nadhir’s inspirations include Björk, Esao Andrews, and Hana Tajima.

“I’m a sucker for artists who give great attention to details in their works, every inch of it and even when they don’t intend to they just end up constructing worlds whenever they put something out.”

Outside of art, Nadhir is a film enthusiast. His favorite movie is Wes Anderson’s “The Darjeeling Limited”.

“[It’s] shot in my favourite state of India, West Bengal, with my favourite actress in it, Anjelica Huston and includes my favourite piano piece, Debussy’s Clair de Lune.”

AUNTIE’S HUT

Hunched over the river, cloaked in a gauze of incense, green from the glow of fireflies. They sketch constellations around Auntie Sati’s hair.

SATI WA SATI, MIDWIFE

Smaller than any grandma you know, and wrinklier. Quicker, too -- thwack! She’s chopped an eel’s head off with her cleaver.

As Level 3 Cleric. Sells eel extract (1sp, restores 1hp, too gross to chug quickly) or magic incense burners (12sp, not magic).

Manner: Witchy, obviously. “Eel extract. Good for impotence. Eheh heh.” Elbows you and winks. Switches to trance-like soothsaying mode, seemingly at will; whereupon her fireflies freeze in a halo.

I can finally talk about this.

The first RPG adventure I ever wrote, “Lorn Song of the Bachelor”, was made in four days, in a mental state much like a fever dream. I posted the whole thing here. 

Expanded, rewritten and playtested, it is now getting a proper release, by the very fine Hydra Cooperative. (They of “Slumbering Ursine Dunes” and “What Ho, Frog Demons!”.)
