Goth music for Evanescence fans
Are you an Evanescence fan (casual or avid) interested in finding actual goth music?
Well, here's a playlist full of like 98% female-fronted goth songs that are mostly Rock-based with dark emotional themes, dramatic riffs, creepy yet beautiful atmospheres, the occasional symphonic element or classic piano, and haunting vocals. The few songs with male vocalists tend to match the particular dark and miserable vibe of Fallen + pre-Fallen Evanescence.
What qualifies me to make such recommendations? I may be an Evanescence hater now (sorry), but they were the band that introduced me to dark alt music when I was 14 in 2006, and were my absolute favorite band for two years before that (special interest level obsession) until I discovered real goth music in early 2007.
Disclaimer: Before ANY goth comes at me for having included Theatre of Tragedy songs in a goth playlist, you cannot convince me that Aégis specifically ISN'T a Gothic Rock album plain and simple. It sounds NOTHING like their Gothic Metal. You can patently hear the Sisters of Mercy influences in songs like Poppæa or even of The Banshees in Samantha. Some songs in that album are even more Ethereal Wave than Gothic Rock such as Siren, Angélique or Cassandra.
Evanescence fans should try out everything between Theatre of Tragedy's debut and Aégis tbh, even if only Aégis is goth. They were SO good and Liv Kristine's vocals are both angelical and technically pristine. She sounds even better live.
Bands I particularly recommend to Evanescence fans interested in goth music:
Die Laughing: I fell in love with them in 2009 because I instantly thought "This is how Evanescence would sound if they were actual Gothic Rock". Beautiful soft mezzo-soprano vocals, full melancholy, epic compositions.
youtube
(old) Dead Souls Rising: Darkwave with hints of classical composition (the vocalist is also a violinist), haunting mezzo-soprano vocals and a persistent preocupation with romanticized death.
youtube
Diva Destruction: Extremely brooding Darkwave by a pianist and dramatic alto singer. Intense atmospheres, good balance between synths and Gothic Rock guitars. Songs about heartbreak and betrayal.
youtube
Virgine Dramatica: Gothic Rock and Darkwave with delicate and emotional soprano vocals. PURE romantic doom with beautiful keyboard arrangements and highly melancholic atmospheres.
[WARNING FOR FLASHING LIGHTS IN THE VIDEO]
youtube
This Ascension: Between Gothic Rock and Ethereal Wave. Gorgeous, sometimes nearly operatic mezzo-soprano vocals, can go almost neo-classical or downright so in some tracks. Poetic, dark romantic, masterful musicianship.
youtube
The Shroud: Started out as Gothic Rock with hints of Deathrock, ended up Ethereal Wave. Delicate mezzo-soprano vocals, poetic, gloomy and brooding lyrics, a fixation with literature and all things antique and romantic.
youtube
Autumn: Gothic Rock with guitars a bit heavier than most of the genre. Lyrics about despair, dramatic alto vocals, intensity and darkness. I think they represent even more what Evanescence would sound like if they were actually goth than Die Laughing does.
youtube
Requiem in White: Legitimately operatic soprano vocals. Shredding Deathrock guitars with Ethereal Wave influences. Brooding, extremely romantic and atmospheric.

jupiter family media taste hcs
this is stupid but idrc. my blog.
David listens to like, classic 90s rock. Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins - that whole lot. He also really likes classic, OG 80s metal (metallica, judas priest, dio, etc.). He developed his music taste from 95 to 99 and never really got into stuff after that. Hes a grumpy old man about his music and will never stray from his ol reliable stack of dusty CDs. Where he's a grandpa about his music though, this man will watch basically any movie that comes out and say "that was pretty good" in his opinion cinema peaked with 2001 a Space Odyssey and Saving Private Ryan. Hal tried to show him Akira or Ghost in the Shell and he got wayyyyyy confused. He doesn't really watch TV other than blankly staring at history channel and animal planet "documentaries" and manly man reality TV shows when there's nothing better to do
Hal has a really eclectic collection of music that is constantly changing. However the most common thread of music he likes is 80s New Wave and synth - The Smiths, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, Duran Duran. That kinda stuff. However his playlist went on to be full of vocaloid songs, neo-synthwave, break core and he got into more experimental stuff as he got older (even then he never fully dug deep, just started listening to Bjork and Kate Bush yk?) He also loves soundtracks and *loves* lofi hip hop. We already basically know Hal's taste in movies/tv so instead im gonna say his favorite anime movie is Akira, his favorite non-anime movie is Brazil and if you ask him his favorite anime he'll go on and on and on about a super obscure mecha anime from the 80s. I think hes a massive cinephile and huge nerd about his movies and shows but it's literally only for anime and sci fi and occasionally action stuff. Ask him about the complexities of Apocalypse Now or the symbolism in Blue Velvet and he'll just give you a blank stare.
Sunny ended up with like. The weirdest combination of her parents tastes. She LOVESSSSS vocaloid and LOVESSSS anime but in a tweenager in the mid 2010s way you know. This girl was in the Black Butler, Attack on Titan, Fairy Tale, Soul Eater TRENCHES. She also got into a lot of alt music but it was. you know. Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco and baby's first alt band stuff. What a crazy lil gal.
Raiden was a nu-metal kid big time. He was always bumping Korn and Slipknot and System of a Down. He was also really into 90s industrial like Rammstein, Nine Inch Nails, and KMFDM. He kinda grew out of this but not really, just mellowed out and got into more 'mainstream' alt like Radiohead and Elliot Smith. As we know, Raiden is a canonical filmbro (getting into fights with random women about pointless details in movies). I think he lovessssss neo noir and crime thrillers. Anything dark and gritty he just adores. Taxi Driver, Fight Club, Fallen Angels, Clockwork Orange, Crash, Prisoners <- whatevere this genre is he just eats that shit up. Hes a total snob, but not like. In a french film school way in a over 500 entries on letterboxd way. He's subscribed to like evry major movie review channel and it's impossible to take him out to any kinoplex because he just starts ranting on the state of modern cinema. He still maintains this snobbery and its only gotten worse lmao

Shoegaze Classics - Doppelgänger
Tumblr media
Doppelgänger - Curve (1992)
Main Genres - Shoegaze, Alternative Dance
A decent sampling of: Industrial Rock, Ethereal Wave, Dream Pop, Neo-Psychedelia
The common story of the origins of the term "shoegaze" itself is often told in a way that would suggest the term's meaning is twofold.
The more literal meaning comes from the heavy usage of multiple guitar pedals for bands to achieve their signature swirling, washy, dense guitar sounds, the guitarists spending more time at live shows staring down at their feet as they prepared to adjust their pedal board.
But it is also often implied that the idea of these bands coming to be known as "shoegazers" is for the generally introverted, shy, wall-flower disposition of the performers. I suppose it doesn't help that long bangs that hide the face, and baggy clothes were common fashion choices for the scene at the time. Of course, your mileage with this stereotype will vary depending on the band.
Next on my shoegaze classics retrospective, I wanted to take a look at a band that defies the wall-flower stereotype of the shoegazers, by taking the genre's signature heavy guitar reverb and turning it into the most bewitching, trancey, and euphoric 90s dance music. Today, we will be discussing Curve.
The Band
Curve emerged onto the London alternative scene in 1990 as a creative duo, comprised of the mysterious, semi-goth and generally badass vocalist and guitarist Toni Halliday, and the guitarist, bassist, drummer and programmer Dean Garcia, a signature lover of wearing sunglasses even at night.
It's easy to say that Toni Halliday had a considerably more memorable stage presence than almost any other frontman, woman, or person in the shoegazing scene. Her performances were animated, but in a very transfixed sort of way, her eyes casting a piercing gaze, with a dark and commanding, but nonetheless ethereal contralto voice coming out of what seems like a rather small woman.
Aesthetically, Curve were kind of in a separate category from most other shoegaze bands. They seemed to have more of a sleek, futuristic, and dare I say sexy image as a band. This was also reflected in their sound, which was decidedly much more intertwined with uptempo 90s dance music and industrial rock, their performances more frenetic and adrenergic.
Unfortunately, Curve is a band whose legacy has been obscured by tired comparisons (and the surrounding discourse) to garbage. *cough* that is, as in the band Garbage. So much so, that I feel compelled to take a minute of my own review to chime in with my own two cents on this ridiculously clichéd fan dispute. For those not in the know, Garbage were a frankly much more commercially successful and mainstream alternative rock outfit from the 90s, started by legendary Nevermind and Siamese Dream producer Butch Vig and a couple of his buddies, plus the 90s most iconically sullen yet outspoken Shirley Manson. The band already started out with connections to some of the biggest 90s alternative bands, most notably Smashing Pumpkins and The Foo Fighters.
Garbage has often been accused of ripping off Curve's sound and style, and at the very least, there are some undeniable similarities. Both bands took a maximalist approach to their sound, making layered, dancey alternative rock that incorporated many of the emerging subgenres of the time, and both with a moody "sad chick" contralto vocalist.
I'll be transparent: Garbage was (along with Smashing Pumpkins and The Cranberries), the band that really got me into 90s alternative rock. There was a time in high school when I was much less versed, and considered them to be one of, if not my #1 favourite band. Like many of my generation, I first learned about Curve THROUGH these comparisons.
And so I imagine it's hard for OG Curve fans not to look at Garbage's success, notice how a decent part of that success was tied to Butch Vig's industry connections, and not become very resentful towards Garbage and the band's many fans.
But let's also be fair: neither Curve nor Garbage were the first band to have a glum, sardonic female vocalist (Lydia Lunch and Kim Gordon come to mind almost immediately). Neither band invented the alternative dance subgenre. And to their credit, Garbage has acknowledged the comparisons to Curve over the years while only having nice things to say about the smaller band. Lesser people with bigger egos from that time (*cough* Billy Corgan *cough* Courtney Love) probably would've taken the opportunity to shit on the band.
Moreover, as their inclusion in this list would suggest, Curve were and are a shoegaze band first, which is a pretty clear distinction. Garbage's sound was never really shoegaze at all; at best, there's a lot of noise pop on the first Garbage record. But Garbage's brand of alternative rock is a lot more poppy, and sometimes trip hoppy (which was hugely successful in the 90s). Likewise, Curve's sound was almost certainly never going to go as mainstream as Garbage. And that's okay, because most great music doesn't go mainstream.
But honestly, even having to acknowledge all of this is kinda lame. It's beating a dead horse that's already been dead for at least 20 years, and Curve's legacy as a band should not be "the band that was Garbage before Garbage".
Instead, Curve should be understood as shoegaze pioneers, being one of the first shoegaze bands to experiment with fusing electronica elements, and playing around with more studio-based guitar sound layering. They are the studio nerds of the original scene, and they deserve to be celebrated for their gorgeously crafted, methodical 90s hybrid sound. Shoegaze walls of sound had never felt this pristine.
The Record
Doppelgänger is Curve's debut record, released after a string of EPs and subsequent compilation LP, as per usual for 90s first wave British bands. It is by all means a very stylish sounding record, co-produced with the famed alternative producer Flood, who's impressive resume of collaborative work spans from electronic bands like New Order and Depeche Mode to abrasive alternative rock like P.J. Harvey and The Jesus And Mary Chain.
As I've hinted at already, this is one of the most 'produced' albums of the first wave of shoegaze records. Far from being a negative, I really enjoy this approach. There is a lot of layering of different tracks happening in the mix, and the whole project comes together as this really punchy, roaring, and technicolor shoegaze that feels very urban and dancefloor ready for your local goth club.
The album's second single "Horror Head" is, put simply, one of the many masterpieces of the first wave of shoegaze. Among the trippiest and most surreal songs of its era, with dazzling, iridescent guitar feedback, sparkling drum machine sounds bouncing off of thin metallic sheets, and sonic colours of violet and indigo. Toni's haunting refrain of "heys" guide the listener to an enchanted nowhere like little forest fairies, while her deliciously dark lead vocals peek through all the many layers with the sense of a delirious protagonist in the songs' swirling universe. Like having the most unusually pleasant sensory overload headache.
As the second track on the record, this is frankly an incredibly hard act to follow, and I'd be lying if I didn't say that some other tracks feel like an attempt to recapture the godlike production of "Horror Head".
Oh, and for some odd reason, the version of the track that I downloaded off of Bandcamp is compressed and a little bass-heavy, versus the version on most other platforms. It would be a bit unfortunate if it is indeed an album/single discrepancy, since the mastering of the version up on YouTube is definitely superior. Regardless, I will judging this based off of the superior version, because its my blog and I can do what I want. Plus, in the age of mp3 files you can just go in and switch it out anyway.
Another standout moment is "Lillies Dying", the most rhythmic song on the record, with a groovy semi-baggy bassline, a descending, melting vocal lead, and a grainy sandstorm of guitar soundscapes. Music for a rave in a barren wasteland, makes me feel like spinning in circles.
I also really like the other single "Faît Accompli", less of a shoegaze track and more of a jagged, darkly erotic industrial rock dancefloor banger. Feels very intended for accompanying a light bondage session in a dimly lit BDSM dungeon.
The record eschews the dance beats for closer "Sandpit", a more atmospheric and introspective song featuring a more traditional combination of dream pop and shoegaze. The track is a nice palette cleanser, bringing a night of Dionysian wonders and relentless dancefloor madness to a definitive close with soft headphone sounds to acompany the bleary transit ride home.
What Came After That?
Curve had a longer original run than most first wave shoegaze bands, releasing 5 LPs from Doppelganger up to their last record in 2002 titled The New Adventures of Curve. I have not heard any of these records in full, but it seems like the band largely continued to do their thing, sometimes veering more into industrial rock territory.
Since then, the band has remained largely inactive save for a few archival releases. Curve are not among the many bands like Slowdive and Ride whom have gotten back together to record and release new records in the 2010s and 2020s.
Toni Halliday started a solo project in 2008 called Chatelaine which has also been mostly inactive, meanwhile Dean Garcia has been in and contributed to about a dozen bands since Curve finished.
But then not every band should have to keep putting out records indefinitely. Curve has a respectable discography, and I've heard bits and pieces from Cuckoo and the more overtly electronic Come Clean that assure me I would thoroughly enjoy those albums as well.
As it stands, Doppelgänger is inadvertently probably one of the most prescient shoegaze records of the 90s, even if it isn't nearly as acclaimed as any of the big three. There were several bands that blended with electronic dance music during the 2000s Nu-Gaze revival that owe a bit of influence to Curve whether they know it or not.
I also feel like this record broke ground for a lot of late 90s records in the alternative scene that were getting darker and dancier, like Smashing Pumpkins' Adore and Tori Amos' From The Choirgirl Hotel.
So here's to Curve, the too often unsung pioneers and studio witchcraft makers of the 90s first wave of shoegaze.
8/10
Highlights: "Horror Head", "Lillies Dying", "Faît Accompli", "Sandpit"

OK SO BEFORE I SHOW THE ALTERNATE DESIGNS FOR THE HLVRV HEADCANONS I WANNA SHOW OFF THIS IDEA I DEFINITELY STOLE FROM MERKLINS AND THAT WAS THAT SINCE OUT OF THE GAME PLAYER HAS NO INVENTORY ON HIM AND WOULD LIKELY HAVE A BAG TO STORE HIS TRINKETS
AND
YES!!!
YES HE WOULD!
i gave him a satchel with little wing decals that he stores all his cool trinkets and the occasional bird that sneaks in to hide all cozy and his crowbar- before he eventually gets told he can't take a WEAPON everywhere with him in the real world- thankfully theres no xen aliens here so not much reason for one anyway
Tumblr media
AND WITH THAT OUT THE WAY, ONTO THE WAVE 1.5 OF MY HLVRV HEADCANONS
to start i have alternate designs for Player, Kittle Freeman and Loverboy which are edits of their drawings in the previous post and then i have Neo and Spork
i'm currently working on something else but i would LOVE to do characters like Darnold, Benry, Sleepless,,etc because accidental multiverse hoppers have a lot of family and of course the episode 2 Gordons
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(notes and Neo & Sporks below)
Player
- literally just the HEV suit, used this as a base for Kittles design
Kittle
- made his hair a bit messier and more spiked in comparison to Players original hair
- a bit of blood and stuff splattered on him from how Kittle is definitely one of those players who would go killing random things hes spawned in after hes done and/or ‘got home from work and is going to take his frustrations out killing random ai and blowing stuff up’ without consequences (until yknow  the ais sentient   and theres consequences)
and also due to godmode would just go through the maps not taking any damage when he was shot at or activated a planned sequence but still getting splattered with blood
- the circuits on his eyes are also further down his body and suit and would spread faster and cover more when he gets angry or overwhelmed (for a while now i’ve liked to think the circuits can react to his emotions so something really strong like anger would make the circuits freak out and branch out more)
Freeman
- based on his suit in In Your Dreams!! he matches with his family now!!
- the spiralling pattern on his cane is squid tentacle inspired and the paint glows in the dark cos i thought that was neat
- grey hairs,, unlike Doc its, unfortunately, stressed induced rather than a side effect of green goop
Loverboy
- so. many. PINS. this is still just a HANDFUL of his collection!
- his hairs filled with a lot more heart shaped curls and he often ties it in a lower ponytail or wears down, sometimes he puts hairclips and little decorations in it to match his pins!
- i think the several hundred hearts do a good job explaining themselves-
-and of course like B he has his name written on his earrings
NEW ADDITIONS: NEO AND SPORK!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Neo
- sort of mashed together 2 different refs i had of them and took the bone pattern from the trousers of the 2nd and instead turned it into a patch he stitched on, along with a clown patterned patch (this is specifically the clowngender xenogender flag)
- decided to make their hair a bit less spikey and more flowy ?
- pronoun badge!
- the shoes are based on his 1st design, the trousers are a little more blue just to try and break up all the dark greys and make the nails and shirt seem less out of place, kept the classic playstation hoodie
- his nails actually match with Swaps!
Spork
- i gave them earrings now- The one shown on the right (left??) ear is a pin and i did draw the other but it didn't look right as Sporks hair actually covers their ears so i drew over it
(and it was a lightbulb like on their hlvrv sprites)
- added a few more buttons to the cuffs of their shirt also
- i gave them a pocket with a notebook that they use for random notices, ideas and as a schedule diary
- (usually) safety pins worn are a way for the wearer to let people know they're a safe person for people who are often discriminated against or afraid, its a way to show you are safe, a symbol of solidarity and thats why i gave Spork one

Hmmm since you don't know much DnD, how about music genre? Also, what animals does Elias not like?
Can I be very honest with you? The fact that you sent an ask clarifying what the auto correct had meant to ask again, then this ask, immediately following up after seeing my reply under the post confessing I don't know much about DND, gave me a lot of humor. It's that sort of Storytelling Through Timing situation, and yesterday I was not having the best day, so ty for the laugh lol. I could still try the dnd thing, but despite the fact that I have played it a couple of times, when it came to roleplaying, I always preferred just text-to-text without the guide system setup, so DND remained a very Sometimes Cookie mystery. Okay, onto the actual ask... music genre. hmm. Lyra - Avant-garde rock (any avant-garde genre just abt)/ Folktronica / Steampunk Audun - Ambient instrumental / Neo Classical / Rune Folk Audric - Neo Classical / Melancholia(Or New Wave) /Symphonic metal Elias - EctoFolk /Chamber Folk / Dark Cabaret Maia - Etherpop / Dreampop / Fantasy (Willow - Weird Al, just as a genre, strangely enough, Weasel Stomping Day is her favorite. Go figure. She loves it.)
(Oh, and Elias hates any and all fuzzy caterpillars. Hates might not be strong enough. They're awful. They should burn. The real blight of the veil is THOSE THINGS.)

Dear listener, I’ve been in a really dark mood lately, so open your mind REAL WIDE because this week’s music pick is a doozy. It’s kind of hard for me to explain this week’s act, because they’re weird as all shit, but I’ll try my best to summarize. There’s this dark wave group I’ve known for about a decade called Die Form, who were never big mostly because their music is widely deemed too disturbing for the mainstream. Despite being around since the late 1970′s and having a catalog that mostly centers around the spicy subjects of eroticism and death, I’ll bet this is the first time you’ve heard of them. Ain’t it? I’d be surprised if you have, as this performance act from France isn’t exactly as popular as, say, a similar group like Skinny Puppy. DF’s brand of coldwave and neo-classical electronics has always been very memorable to me, if for no other reason than they pushed boundaries in music in bizarre ways. Their tones are VERY dark, boasting unconventional electronic beats and effects that you CAN’T find anywhere else, and backed up since the late 1980′s by the booming and haunting voice of one Éliane P. This tune is by a country mile my favorite track of theirs, Morphosis from the 2006 album ExHuman, which interestingly was a counterpart and sequel to their 2004 album InHuman. It’s highly experimental, it’s kinda goth overall, and many of their latest albums contain less voice and more atmospherics for those who appreciate a little variety. Smash play and go down a rabbit hole that is both dangerous and, in some cases, very taboo, their most extreme topics including subjects like necrophilia... to name just one. This stuff may be too dark for you, or it could just tickle you in your audio no-no place... as it certainly does for me. Get out of that rigid comfort zone and enjoy something different for a change!

Hypothetical Sonic the Hedgehog Fighting Game (from Arc System Works) Character Roster
Tumblr media
A good way to use character tier list makers: crafting your dream roster for a fighting game.
Yes, I'm suggesting "Sonic Violence" for the title, because "Sonic Warriors" sound like what folks would expect from a Dynasty Warriors-type game, and every other option I thought about sounds either too battle royale-ish or too generic.
Making up the base/launch roster would be most of the obvious choices, including characters who haven't appeared in mainline Sonic games yet, but have been present in spin-off games at least once. Espio and Charmy would serve as assist characters for Vector, and Wave and Storm would do the same for Jet. Zavok would use the powers of Zazz, Zomom, Master Zik, Zeena and Zor in his moveset. Doctor Eggman and Omochao would use robot walkers of differing sizes.
Missing from the top row (for obvious reasons) is this imaginary game's boss character, whom would be introduced in it and need to be unlocked through completion of the Story Mode.
After the game's release, the DLC seasons will get underway. I picture four of them, giving the game four years of support, and each having a running theme to their character reveals.
Season 1's theme is centered around characters exclusive to the Classic branch of the franchise, allowing Fang the Sniper, Bean the Dynamite, Metal Knuckles, and Heavy King of the Hard-Boiled Heavies to feature alongside the Modern cast.
Season 2's theme is based on adaptations of Sonic made recently and in the past decade, be it T.V. shows, comic books or films, so you could get characters like Rusty Rose from Prime, Surge the Tenrec from IDW, and possibly Longclaw from the film series (the only original - and named - anthro-animal character in the movies to date). I only put Perci from Sonic Boom there because of her Ensemble Darkhorse status.
Season 3's theme is major villains long past; a selection of the most notable villains-of-the-week from the franchise's history, like Neo Metal Sonic from Heroes, Mephiles the Dark from '06 ("HIS NAME IS MEMPHIS TEN-", That's not funny! It was barely funny the first time! It's never going to be funny again!), and Infinite from Forces. Why Captain Whisker, though? Because he's goofy as all heck.
Season 4's theme celebrates good characters who never made a true reappearance, but left a powerful impression with the limited time they had, including E-102 Gamma from Adventure, Emerl from Battle, Sonic the Werehog from Unleashed, and Sir Lancelot from Black Knight.

PLAYING IN THE WAVES, 1883 by ARNOLD BÖCKLIN
PLAYING IN THE WAVES reveals the artist’s irreverent attitude towards his traditional sources. While the figures in the waves appear to be modeled after TRITON, a sea-god and sea-merman from GREEK mythology, there is no mythological basis for the scene.
Instead, the painting recurs to an incident that BÖCKLIN witnessed while on vacation on the ITALIAN coast with his friend ANTON DOHRN. Dohrn, a zoologist, confronted a group of female bathers by coming up to them underwater and suddenly reappearing. It is even said that the face of the Triton, whose salacious intentions seem clear, is based on DOHRN'S.
The painting’s color palette is dark and mournful, and the woman’s fear appears to be very real. The viewer feels a strange blend of sensuality, terror, and humor. The painting’s comic-gritty nature was widely discussed during the late 19th century.
The painting’s combination of close-up perspective, grand classical references, and low comedy reflects BÖCKLIN’s irreverent attitude toward aesthetic hierarchy and categorization, as well as his status as a neo-classical painter.
