LEAFPOOL!!!!! MY BLORBO!!!
this is a redesign, but I barely changed anything, I just redrew her with my improved style, made her proportions even chonkier, and made her stripes more simple!  I LOBE HER SO MUCH U DONT UNDERSTAND
here is her prev. design!
[Image ID: A digital drawing of Leafpool from Warrior Cats. She is standing with her left side facing us, and she has a happy but unsure expression on her face, she is smiling and blushing. She is a short, round, fat, torbie molly. She is mostly brown with dull orange on the right half of her face, on a round patch on her back, a spot on her leg and from the middle of her tail to the end. She has white from between her eyebrows, around her eyes, and down her cheeks, and she has freckles across her cheeks as well. Her eyes are orange, and her nose and inner ears are light pink. She has a yellow flower and two green leaves behind her ears as well as two leaves at her tail base and pale blue purple and pink flowers on her flank./End ID]
Info about her in my au! I warn you, it is very long v
First off the biggest change is that she is mates with Mothwing instead of Crowfeather! I am actually changing up Crow a lot as well! I like the idea of Leaf and Crow actually being friends instead, which will make even more since when I get into Crowfeather in my au!
Leafpool starts out like she is in the books, a perfect devout follower of Starclan, but she has too big of a heart and falls for Mothwing. Mothwing has never understood the rules about Med cats since she doesn't even believe in Starclan at this point, and eventually she confesses her feelings to Leafpool, and Leaf takes a few days, thinking maybe she would get a sign from Starclan, and she does! Starclan tells her to follow her heart, sooo tells Moth that she returns her feelings!
Like in canon she eventually gets pregnant (Mothwing is trans), but one thing that's different here is that Moth, Leaf, Squirrel and Bramble are close, Moth and Bramble bond as siblings, especially after what happened with Hawk. So when Leaf gets pregnant and she and Moth plan to run away together they tell Bramble and Squirrel. They don't want to see them go but they understand why they are leaving, and they promise to keep quiet. But when Leaf and Moth get the message from Midnight, they come back, and Cinderpelt dies, Squirrel and Bramble promise to help them! Like in canon Starclan tells Squirrel to raise the 3, and this time Bramble knows about it!
Watching her kits grow up being raised by someone else is painful for Leafpool, as well as Moth since she cant even see her kits as often, being in another clan. And over time Leaf starts to get more and more doubtful of Starclan, Moth at this point knows they are real, but she thinks of them just as dead cats “why should we listen to them?” and Leaf starts to get where Moth is coming from... They had told her to follow her heart hadn't they? and was that really meant to help her? with her and her mate now suffering without their kits? had this been fated?
She watches her daughter become filled with anger and hatred for Leaf and Moth, she watches her loose herself to this hatred, she watches her call them out in front of the clans.
But, when this happens several cats come to Leafpool's defense! While Leaf is sitting in horror of what has happened, Mothwing stands next to her mate, claws unsheathed ready to fight anyone who would dare harm her, and soon after Squirrelflight snaps out of her surprise and does the same, followed by Brambleflower. Crowfeather joins them, Tawnyclaw is next, and several more of these cat’s friends and allies do as well.
The clans are not what they used to be, the borders are weak, warriors have many friends within other clans, some even have mates, kits even! Many of the laws of the warrior code have been weakened or forgotten for the sake of a new more peaceful life in the new territories. Many cats wonder, why should that not be the same for Medicine cat law? Mothwing climbs up next to the leaders and asks why a cat should have had to hide her kits away at all? Why when Starclan themselves had told her to take a mate, had allowed her to have kits?
Though Hollyleaf has run away with Lion and Jay following after her, the meeting continues, and many things change about the medicine code that night.
(more happens after this obv. but I haven't planned it all out yet hehe)
After everything that happens to her Leafpool has much the same snarky attitude about Starclan as Jaywing does. While she still will take their prophecies and commune with them, she takes it all with a grain of salt. She is known for being kind to everyone and always trying to see the good in people, but Starclan? no they are going to have to prove they're worth listening to.

perhaps hawkash hypokits?
I decided to try to name these hypokits, but admittedly I'm not very good with names

Colorpoint Hawkfrost go brrr. Yes I know that genetically he wouldn't be a colorpoint and would instead just carry it, but consider: I love colorpoints. I am choosing to ignore canon and saying that Tigerclawstar carries colorpoint because I am too attached to Mothwing & Hawkfrost being colorpoints
My Ashfur carries colorpoint because my Snowfur (& Bluestar but she's not relevant to this conversation) is a colorpoint so. Hypothetically he could get it from Whitestorm (I could be wrong about that but you know what? It's not like the actual series cares about genetics so I think I'm allowed to also ignore them sometimes if it means I can give a character a cool design)
I feel like Ashfur would totally name one of his kits after his mother, Brindleface. Admittedly I chose the suffix -mask based on Brindlemask being a colorpoint, so her name being so similar to Brindleface's is actually unintentional
I didn't have as solid of a name idea for the other kit, though. Ashfur would totally give a kit that he had (with anyone other than Squilf) the prefix Squirrel- but I'm not totally sure that name would fit this guy (but maybe that's the point. Maybe he's stuck with the name of someone one of his fathers was obsessed with. Maybe he winds up changing it to something new, something that's his own).
If these two were either born before Hawkfrost's death or born in an AU where Hawkfrost isn't killed at the lake by Brambleclaw (or is killed later than in canon), I think perhaps he would be named after either Mudclaw or Tigerclawstar.
Alternative prefixes could also maybe be Bramble, Tadpole, Frog, or Branch.
Anyways, I feel like both of then would wind up training in the Dark Forest at some point. Either they're training with Peepaw Tigerclawstar or they're training with Hawkfrost.
I imagine that at least one of them would be actively antagonistic towards Holly, Jay & Lion (at least during Po3 and possibly OotS). Take a look at Ashfur & Hawkfrost and tell me that at least one of them wouldn't severely fuck up their kits by using them as pawns against Squirrelflight and/or Brambleclaw.
Also they're both Polydactyl, a trait they got from Hawkfrost (who got it from Tigerclawstar)

Not to re-invent the concept of Pope, but I think the eldest medicine cat in the forest/around the lake should have a particular, higher status than the others. Be the one who directs the group on the way to the Moon-stone/pool, be the one to say "now stop gossiping, we must commune with Starclan", be the one to give their new name to a medcat apprentice... If a medicine cat has a doubt about something, be it a moral question or what herb to use for this rare sickness, it's the cat they'll be looking for.
Not necessarily the eldest though. The most respected or one who did something extraordinary or one chosen by starclan would do too.
In the old forest, Hawkheart was the leader of the medicine cats, because Goosefeather was crazy. But when he killed Moonflower, although in a state of legitimate defense, or so he argued, the mantle went to Sagewhisker. She tried to make her apprentice inherit it, arguing that Yellowfang's capacity to feel the pain of others was a sign from Starclan, but when she was exiled, it went to Barkface. During the Great Journey, he let Cinderpelt assume his duties because he had to care for Tallstar. But then Leafpool was the one who found the moonpool, and despite her young age, she got to bear the charge of being the leader of the medicine cats.
Then Leafpool left with Crowfeather and Cinderpelt died, and Leafpool was stained because she broke her vows. Littlecloud took on the charge, because Barkface couldn't: you can't become leader of the medicine cats more than once, unless Starclan itself brought a sign.
Littlecloud held the charge for longer than many medicine cats before him. When Flametail died, he resigned because grief was too strong. Mothwing was designed by the other cats because she was the most senior still eligible. But she refused, and said it was time for Leafpool to be forgiven her past mistakes. "You can't be the leader twice." Barkface objected. "Unless Starclan sends a sign, and they sent one the first time. So now it's like it was her first time." Mothwing answered.
Leafpool was the senior medicine cat for a long time. When she died, Mothwing finally endorsed the mantle of leader of the medicine cats, as a tribute to her friend. And after all, even if she was critical of Starclan, she believed in them again. This time she was ready to assume the duties.
When Mistystar exiled Mothwing on the impostor's orders, Tigerstar II was delighted to let her in his clan... who controls the leader of the medicine cats controls all of the medicine cats. The only problem was that the medicine cats couldn't talk to starclan at the time. But it was still a power move.
When Shadowsight was tired of being criticized by Mothwing, he bit back his remarks. Not because he didn't want to answer to an elder and to another medicine cat. But because she was the leader of all medicine cats. Puddleshine defered to her and didn't dare question her when she started reorganizing his herbs.
When Mistystar died, Mothwing was too busy with other duties and abandonned her charge. Jayfeather picked it up by sense of duty more than anything else: you can't let Kestrelflight be the leader of the medicine cats now can you? Maybe was it also a way for him to honor his mother's memory.
Pope but for cats.

After I finished my new Lion King design challenge, I was going to start my DOTC design challenge, but instead found that I was in the mood to make a full illustrated piece. With Leopardstar's Honor coming out in less than two days (it's almost midnight where I am), I've had RiverClan on the brain a lot lately, and I thought it would be fun to draw a RiverClan cat chilling in the river.
The obvious choice would've been drawing Leopardstar, but I felt like drawing a cat with long fur so I could play with how the fur clumped while it was wet and how it spread over the water, and my Leopardstar design is short-haired. So instead I went with a different RiverClan cat with a bright orange-y coat, and who is one of my personal favorites - Mothwing!
So here we have Mothwing chilling in the river, having caught a perch. She may be a medicine cat, but she trained as a warrior first, and I imagine there must be times where she just wants to hang out by the river and maybe get a little fishing done, or just take a relaxing swim.
I had a lot of fun with this one.  I used this image as a reference for the background (even though the background ended up looking pretty different from it), this image as a reference for Mothwing's pose, and this image as a reference for the perch. I'm so happy with how it all came together in the end. I was a bit worried in places, but honestly the end result looks pretty awesome. I hadn't planned this way, but this kind of serves as an interesting comparison to the last time I drew a cat in the water, which was really the first time I started experimenting with more complex backgrounds, and happened to feature Mothwing's brother, Hawkfrost. I've definitely gotten way better at backgrounds in general, water in particular, and shading cats since then.  I'm really proud of this piece.

It’s been years since I actually read the books, but I remember how I always thought the Medicine Cat role was both the coolest and most frustrating
Like how there can only be two MCs at a time, and how even then one of them is labeled an apprentice, and therefore treated as subordinate to the other in some way, even if they are logically at the same skill level and have been working together for months or even years (Goosefeather and Featherwhisker come to mind first, along with Cinderpelt and Yellowfang)
Oh one hand, it makes sense why there are so few MCs — it’s not just being the go to doctor of the clan, it’s being tied to StarClan, even more so than the leaders, it felt, who are gifted additional lives. Having a bunch of cats go to the Designated Magic Spot, which unlike the gathering spots isn’t in a relatively neutral spot but in/near one specific Clan’s territory, is kinda a recipe for disaster. If one Clan had seven MCs, they’d be seen as an invasion, not a travel party.
The thing is, so many inherent rules to being a MC could lead to drama, and does, but it never feels taken advantage of? Maybe it’s because most of the main characters aren’t medicine cats, but still
It’s a role that’s tied to magic, and yet there’s not really a way to prove a MC is actually committed to this part, like with Mothwing. It’s a role where having as few as possible makes sense, and yet it’s also dangerous to have only one — like when ThunderClan was left without one when Spottedleaf was killed, temporarily leaving them without a doctor or solid connection to StarClan — or can lock others out of the role when there’s already two — like when Spottedkit initially could’ve been denied the role if Goosefeather hadn’t retired
What if Yellowfang hadn’t joined ThunderClan, and they were left without an MC? Would they have had to ask one of the other clans to lend theirs temporarily until they trained a new one? What if Goosefeather never retired? What if both MCs end up elder aged and there’s no kit interested/available to be trained as a new one?
I remember how Hollypaw wanted to be a MC while Jaypaw didn’t, but Destiny got in the way. I also remember how for a while Brightheart hung out in the medicine den and lowkey received training as an assistant, and I always thought that was kinda brilliant. Like having the regular apprentices spend part of their training in the medicine den as a Just In Case situation, and having a couple warriors pitch in as part of their rotating duties. Obviously not learning everything, but enough that if another Spottedleaf situation happens, they won’t worry too much about getting sick without a caretaker
I feel like there’s so much potential for interesting stories centered around the Medicine Cats, but fro I remember they were usually left in the background or something related to the (kinda dumb but whatever) No Kits rule or the drama usually boiling down to someone Not Wanting To Be A Medicine Cat

I know I said I'd take a break but: Frostpaw was calling
Anyway, how rad is it that I designed Sunbeam, deemed her a new favorite character, and now she's gonna be a POV character??? Love that
Also is Mothwing back in Riverclan because??? If Willowshine is dead now, who's training Frostpaw? Are we going to get a POV of a young apprentice losing her only mentor and being LOST on what to do, confused and alone?? Maybe that's gonna be a good portion of the first book at least!

fic notes for “in a faith-forgotten land”
usually i wait a bit to post these but i just wanted to ramble for a hot sec. fuck i haven't even posted iaffl but i wanna b able to link it.
mothwing is trans now!
i know i never addressed it specifically bc i'm not sure cats care at All about it but i like to think it's there subtly. i certainly know it's there.
specifically, when ferncloud has a sick kit, mothpaw sends leafpaw to deal with it, and the conversation with leafpool and mothwing implies that mothwing could have been their other bio parent.
anyway in Non Trans Mothwing news:
i have a playlist for this fic which is weird i usually listen to Silence.
mosspelt has a litter in "a shadow in riverclan," but they're never named, so i named them. duskkit, ridgekit, and dapplekit. i'll let you guess which one is which, they're named purely on their design.
mosspelt's design is so pretty tho. i love her.
what else...uh i realized i kind of had to post this asap bc father's day. idk. it felt fitting. i don't Do Father's Day so. mothwing spends a lot of time being like "fathers fucking suck don't have one" which yes correct
(if u have a good dad that does not apply to you.) /gen
so yeah this was finished in an inspired run i'm not sharing what time it is here.
afkjl this is a weird one bc like. i just. do not talk about Any of the canon events.
like i thought cinderpelt's piece was bad? no. nope. this one. this one is worse.
tigerstar who? hawkfrost dying what?
oh! the three don't have powers in this. or like. maybe they do. it's Complicated.
their powers, if they do have them, are subtle enough to not Necessarily be a power, y'know?
anyway i'm getting ahead of myself with that.
it's really fucking weird that cinderpelt and spottedleaf are alive, but barkface and runningnose are dead. major brain fuckery.
oh, if you're curious, at the end of this, the seer set up is:
mothwing and flamepaw in thunderclan
spottedleaf and kestrelpaw in riverclan
cinderpelt and willowpaw in shadowclan
and leafpool and jaypaw in windclan
i may add some shorter stories for flamepaw and co after i finish the main arc. depends. they don't have like. i have an eight fic arc that they're not a part of. but they're still fun characters.
esp. willow.
oh uh! yeah i didn't forget about the sightstone the tradition just fucking dies with mothwing bc she doesn't have a starclan connection whoops.
yellowstorm is real fucking angry about it.
"next seer in a line unbroken" my ass.
alright that's all for now.
no i lied i'm editing instead of reblogging but. whoops.
oh uh i had cats actually say i love you which is like. not something i usual do(tm) and i really need to go to bed but.
anyway it's intentional too. big deal. just wanted to say that okay.

🐖, 🐿, 🦎 for the design questions?
🐖- what is your favorite design you've done?
Hmm i like lots of them actually, but i think my favorites are spottedleaf, longtail, sandstorm and maybe speckletail
🐿- what design do you absolutely love, but it's a character you hate?
I can't really think of any characters i hate since i haven't even finished the new prophecy (i basically keep up with the books through the fandom lmao) but i guess brokenstar was an asshole djshdjhsjd the scars over his eyes look cool
Breezepelt also looks pretty nice w the black fur and yellow eyes, especially when people make his fur purple-ish and from what i heard about him he was a little bitch
🦎- favorite design headcanon
Very small hawkfrost and huge mothwing plus making them lynx points (funfact my pfp is hawkfrost,, i should probably post the whole drawing sometime,,,)
