that metamorphosis goodreads review pains me so deeply and makes me so furious. like i wouldn't care if it was just some rando, but it was a person who has a whole youtube channel dedicated to talking about and reviewing books. this is someone who views themself as at least a small authority of what makes a book good. but their reading comprehension is so surface level that the idea that the book is a metaphor DIDNT EVEN OCCUR TO THEM UNTIL OTHER PEOPLE POINTED IT OUT. DID NOT EVEN CROSS THEIR MIND. they took is completely at face value and got mad when it didnt immediately explain how the bugification happened. this is what harry potter and the same mass produced booktok books about a white girl falling in love with the same abusive goth faerie over and over again does to your brain.

i bingewatched wednesday yesterday on bored impulse for some background noise- surprisingly fun and engaging! the kind of campy shit u put on at a sleepover w some popcorn. not without its issues tho, main one is the frankly antiblackness of having the two notable black characters be mean/bullies (they do get better as the series goes on but like??? feels gross. black people shouldnt have to ~earn~ the nuance of all the black characters in the show by continuing watching when that is not the case for the non black characters)

love triangle shit was also ridiculous and unnecessary- wednesday had no chemistry with any of these boys and by the time i could start to tell them apart, the series had fuckin ended lol. the chemistry with her roommate however?? all the classic tropes. if you want a pairing then these two are So Obvious but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

and the link to the addams family is Tenuous at best. its essentially only there for familiarity but otherwise feels utterly disconnected. a fringe adaption loosely based on the concept. but with enough hallmarks that even if u didnt call this the addams family, someone would almost definitely accuse u of plagiarism

Kill All Normies by Angela Nagle

“The rise of Milo, Trump and the alt-right are not evidence of the return of the conservatism, but instead of the absolute hegemony of the culture of non-conformism, self-expression, transgression and irreverence for its own sake – an aesthetic that suits those who believe in nothing but the liberation of the individual and the id, whether they’re on the left or the right. The principle-free idea of counterculture did not go away; it has just become the style of the new right.”

Finished the audiobook version of Angela Nagle's Kill All Normies: Online Culture Wars from 4chan and Tumblr to Trump and the Alt-Right. First of all, I appreciated the investigation into the development of the alt-right from a journalistic perspective. Much like Jesus and John Wayne, the author weaves together disparate figures, organization, and themes into a coherent narrative.

I am not an expert on this topic but I think it suffers from its narrow point of view. Nagle's thesis, as I understand it, is that the alt-right developed 1) as a reactionary backlash to Tumblr identity politics and 2) to appropriate the social capital of counterculture hipness. This feel truncated, probably by necessity.

One of the things that frustrates me most about Nagle's thesis is that she calls for the end of counterculture at large. The mere existence of the aforementioned social capital of hipness being appropriated by fascists is enough to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Hasn't counterculture been the cradle of queer liberation movements? Of the rejection of white supremacy? If not the cradle, then certainly nurtures and expanded in these environments. Counterculture broadens our imaginations and give us alternative pictures of life.

Nagle also seems to be preoccupied with creating a left that acts in a way that will guard against reactionary backlash from the right. I don't really have to say it but, eschewing neopronouns will not stop the right from attacking the left. This kind of mindset gives leftists the go-ahead to leave behind our most vulnerable.

I have some more quibbles, like her assertion that brown, Muslim, male protestors are given more leeway than white ones (I mean, have you seen what we let white men get away with?) but I don't feel the need to get much into them. Overall, I admire the examination of the evolution and tactics of the alt-right, but struggled with many of her conclusions.

I genuinely think it is a rite of passage for a Pokemon fan to champion a Pokemon that is unpopular, uncool, or 'weak'.

For some, it comes quickly. A child sees Gulpin and thinks it's the funniest thing ever. For some, it's trying something new. The competitive battler who just starts messing around, picks up a Pachirisu, and leads it to victory against impossible stakes. For some, it's an accident. The Nuzlocker who got way too attached to an early game friend who refused to die, and grieved for their friend and comrade when their time came. For some, it's defiance. The person who kinda likes Raichu and will defend it from the slings and arrows of all others. For some, it's just comfortably growing up and realising you don't have to justify liking something, just that it makes you happy.

It's easy to be drawn to the crowd favourites. And why not? They can be powerful fighters, cute merch, fanart-bait, they have a je ne sais quoi that draws the eye. And that's still fine! I'm not going to tell anyone they're a bad person for liking Charizard, or Mewtwo, or Gengar, or Pikachu. They're popular for a reason. But there is a kind of zen, a state of enlightenment of sorts, in finding a funky little guy who isn't very good and isn't very popular but makes you smile, and you go out of your way to find them and raise them and maybe even never evolve them, despite them being a damp squib in actual battles.

One of my favourite Pokemon ever is Swinub. Swinub is not a strong Pokemon. In fact, statistically, it's one of the weakest. Swinub has 5 weaknesses, including all 3 starter types. It doesn't learn many coverage moves, and it's abilities are not very exciting either. But I love this little piglet. It's round and soft! It digs up hot springs with its nose! You never see its eyes! I just think it's neat.

It's an important thing, I think, to find a Pokemon you like just for you. Not because it makes you better than 'the normies', but because it makes you appreciate the Pokemon you do meet, not for their battling prowess, but for how much you just want to be around them. When I see @good-pokemon-center-reviews frankly doing the lord's work in sharing people who are just so happy to have their little guys, I see starry-eyed children relishing in the wonder the Pokemon world is meant to bring. Genuine, earnest joy at a plushy Croagunk will always be more real to me that any Smogon tier chart. That guy gets it. The guy being a dick on Pokemon showdown with a team of 5 Zacians and a Mega Rayquaza for spice does not.

With a sigh, Lucifer rubs his eyes, puts his phone back in the drawer and returns to work. Once again looking at the documents in front of him he begins to file through them again.

Lucifer was finding it hard to pay attention. As much as he hated to admit it, those photos teased him and they were all he could think about. He found himself re-reading the same lines on the document over and over again and still, it made no sense. He was distracted, and it was all because of you. Unbuttoning his shirt, he released some of his built up heat. 

Damn it . He thought. 

He had a fantastic grip on ignoring his urges and he intended to do that tonight, as he did most nights, but you tested him. He can't go around indulging himself now can he? But, with the image of you dancing around in his head, maybe he could. 

Twirling his pen in his hand, he began to get lost in thought. He was imagining all of the things he wanted to do to you tonight, and most nights. He starts to play around with his tempo, speeding up and slowing down as he gets to the edge. Why was he torturing himself like this?

Finding his correct momentum, Lucifer lets loose, the classical piece playing in the background guiding him to crescendo. The thoughts of you spinning around in his head like a blizzard.

His growls begin to fill the air, as he clenches his teeth harder, bracing himself for release. He needed to cum.  

And just like that, Lucifer allows himself to; staining the paper in front of him, and saturating his hand. He sits back for a moment, allotting his mind and body to relish in the peace he so rarely gets. 

After a few deep breaths, he cleans himself up, and returns back to reality. Adjusting himself back at his desk, he notices the few spots of his document.
