What we did for two hours was- there was this garbage can, like recycling garbage can that had a lid on it with the hole on top was about the size of a Coke can. And somewhere along the way, someone had gotten a miniature rubber ducky. And for two hours, we spent throwing the rubber ducky and trying to get it into the hole of the recycling can. And everyone- everyone in the room was so involved and took turns doing this. [Super invested.] Oh my God, to the point where we were getting so close, and there was like wars from the crowd and people being like, “You fucking suck! Are you kidding me?” and all our kids were there too and they’re talking shit. It was amazing. And it was like two, maybe two and a half hours before Tucker finally sunk one. [Oh, Tucker finished it.] Tucker finished it. [Central Jersey, great athletes.] But here’s the thing, like no one, mostly sober people, you know what I mean. Nothing on the rider, not a bottle on the rider. It was just pure fucking unadulterated fun. [And at this stage in the game, we’re talking about grown ass adults. Building the Sanctuary PVP arena was a many-day project, but one that Sausage found quite enjoyable, as he’d enlisted Pearl to help him. He said she seemed like a good builder, although he already knew that, somehow. She agreed, and they set about building. They spent the days in easy company, joking and building the colorful building. Pearl was just so easy going, with a dry wit and a steady cleverness that Sausage found a good friend in. They worked together like they had before, and the deja-vu kept hitting him like roaring waves of water. If Pearl noticed anything odd in his behavior, she didn’t say anything. Probably used to it by now. Everyone looked at Pearl funny, it seemed. Like she was a ghost of trailing sunflowers.

“You won’t stand a chance, you know that, right?”

Sausage scoffed. “Girl, you’ve been what, building on that Hermitcraft world? Me, I’ve been fighting my demons since I got here. Im a muscle god, gotta keep up with my thunder daddy. I’m totally gonna slaughter you.” He giggled.

“Building? Somewhat, yeah.” Pearl replied. “But I also lead a revolution. Competed in tournaments. Battle follows me wherever I go, tough guy.” She mimed fighting off an invisible assailant with a stone brick, giggling too.

Sausage watched her, a brilliant pain in his heart at her words. “I had a friend like you once.”

“Ah, is this that deity of yours again?” Pearl asked kindly, probably too kindly considering how many times Sausage had brought her up. She glanced towards the church, then back at Sausage. “You know, by the way, I appreciate that you let me stay in your home while we do this work, but you don’t have to sleep in the church, you know.”

Sausage sighed. “Can’t sleep well anymore. Being in there helps a little.” Was it really that obvious that he had been sleeping in the church, curled up at the foot of the alter night after night? “She was very kind and loved by all, and loved to fight like you do. I know I’m not the only one that misses her. I keep finding evidence of her in other empires.”

“She must have been loved very much, to be immortalized like she has.” Pearl said kindly, reaching a hand out for another stone brick to put into place.

Sausage picked a stone up and placed it in her hand. The sun was starting to set on Sanctuary, but Sausage didn’t want to stop working. Because every time he closed his eyes, even to blink, he was afraid that Pearl would vanish. But he smiled despite it all, with joy and pain and guilt rushing through him until he could hardly stand it.

“Yeah. She is.”

I’ve seen posts about more rogue SecUnits ending up at Preservation and the PresAux humans realizing Murderbot is a bit weird and feral, and it’s a great concept, *but*:

I raise you that more rogue SecUnits end up at Preservation, and the PresAux humans slowly begin to realize that every single SecUnit/construct is weird and feral in its own unique way.

T17 keeps trying to eat human foods, even though it has no digestive system and barely has tastebuds. A47 is a gremlin that spends 70% of its time lurking silently in the ductwork. The Green One will tell everyone about its plants and it Will Not Shut Up under any circumstances. Every few months everyone has to go on a scavenger hunt for Silence and un-alphabetize everything it alphabetized in the interim. It’s just easier to wear a life preserver while doing anything in Dock 27, yes it makes the SecUnit there more comfortable, no you don’t want to experience stealth force-life-jacketing. Things like that.

Until women and girls are liberated from poverty and injustice, peace, security, and sustainable development are in jeopardy.
