Nani... Nastavi gdje sam ja stao. Nani... Životu sam puno već dao. Nani, bdjetit ću možda do jutra, sad brinem o tebi ー a ti o meni sutra.
Nani... Continue where I left off. Nani... I've given life more than enough. Nani, I'll push myself awake 'til the morning, I worry about you now, and you about me tomorrow.

1997 Dublin - Number 10 - Novi Fosili - "Vrijeme"
youtube
Welcome to my top 26s third incarnation of Novi Fosili! A venerable band with top Eurovision pedigree and perennials at Dora, and before that, at Jugovizija. The Croatian ABBA were founded in 1976 and continued to be stalwarts of the music scene in Yugoslavia and Croatia until 2020, and the sad death of lead singer Rajko Dujmić.
They specialised in singing light-hearted, catchy tunes as well as love ballads. This took them to fourth place for Yugoslavia in the 1987 Eurovision grand final. In 1997 they submitted Vrijeme (Time) to Dora, their seventh entry in Eurovision national finals.
Rajko dressed as a sailor for some reason, pours out his heart with a minor verse dwelling on how time grinds your life away slowly accompanied by timpani and a dramatic piano. But then there's the sweet, sugary, major-keyed chorus of love, and you know how much I love that minor/major switch. A song about timeless of love, eternal and unflinching. OK, perhaps they're not the Croatian ABBA after all...
This is Novi Fosili's post-war incarnation with new singers Jelena Fošner and Nataša Belošević, therefore it's not quite the same band as in 1987, yet the continuity they represent just by entering Dora and doing their thing is not to be underestimated. Dora was heading in a very different direction by this time, indicated by the winning entry and the past two years. A national final very much in the vanguard of the late 1990s change in Eurovision. There's still room for them here and although they finished ninth of the twenty songs in Dora 1997, nearly every regional jury gave them points. Respect earned.
For the record, apart from 1997 Novi Fosili entered Jugovizija in 1981, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1987 (when they won) and then Dora in 1996, 1998 and 2001.

There's something charming about being on tumblr and seeing people abroad be fans of our local balkan Eurovision artists from this year (Luke Black, Joker Out, Let 3, etc.)
I'm glad y'all like their songs! It really makes me happy when others like our popsynth and altrock bands as well. I'll recommend some artists/bands in the tags if y'all want some other balkan pop/rock/synth bands to listen to.

☆ Ajde da ja tebe vidim onda
☆ : give the first lines of a song which is originally in your language
dugo sam razmišljala koju pjesmu odabrati, ali onda sam odlučila pratiti svoje trenutno raspoloženje:
U najdaljem kutu moje sobe Uvijek me srce tiho zazebe Kad u moru čudnih stvari Nađem jedan dio tebe
U najdaljem kutu moje sobe Miješam san i miješam javu Čuvam jednu košulju tvoju Najdražu, košulju plavu, košulju plavu
Košulja plava by Novi Fosili
Switching to English briefly to say that this is one of the cult Croatian/ex-Yugoslavian pop bands and that they are the closest to ABBA vibes we'll ever have!

[Sources]
*I couldn't find information on where Tereza was from, so I assume she's Croatian because she sang in Croatian. Please let me know if you have a source for what her nationality is!
**Zdravko Čolić is Bosnian-Serbian.
***Danjiel is Montenegrin-Croatian.
****One member of Vlado and Isolda is from Serbia, and the other is from Croatia.
