Operation Anthropoid

These are some facts and curiosities about Operation Anthropoid:

It was the code name for the assassination attempt on SS-Obergruppenführer and General der Polizei Reinhard Heydrich

The operation was carried out in Prague on 27 May 1942 after having been prepared by the British Special Operations Executive with the approval of the Czechoslovak government-in-exile. 

 Warrant Officer Jozef Gabčík (Slovak) and  Jan Kubiš (Czech) were chosen to carry out the operation on 28 October 1941 (Czechoslovakia's Independence Day).

Gabčík and Kubiš initially planned to kill Heydrich on a train, but after examination of the logistics, they realised that this was not possible.

Gabčík and Kubiš waited at the tram stop at a tight curve near Bulovka Hospital in Prague 8-Libeň. The spot was chosen because the curve would force the car to slow down. 

As Heydrich’s open-topped Mercedes 320 Convertible B reached the curve two minutes later, Gabčík stepped in front of the vehicle and tried to open fire, but his Sten submachine gun jammed.

When Heydrich stood up to try to shoot Gabčík with his Luger pistol, Kubiš threw a modified anti-tank grenade at the car

Gabčík and Kubiš were initially convinced that the attack had failed.

More than 13,000 were arrested after the attack, including Jan Kubiš' girlfriend Anna Malinová, who subsequently died in the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp.

Operation Anthropoid remains the only successful government-organized targeted killing of a top-ranking Nazi

The tank museum is closing at some point next year and literally everything is for sale. I'm sure the tanks are for sale to right person. Some of the tanks are on loan from the DoD so those are not for sale. This museum has hundreds of complete, actual, real, authentic uniforms that were actually real people's uniforms. Some of the uniforms and sets included guns, swords, clocks, personal photos of Hitler, pocket watches. Prison uniforms. The uniforms of of Creighton Abrams. Uniforms over Obergruppenführers. Those are also for sale. Personally signed by Stalin "letters of thanks" to units for their heroic efforts. Hats, guns, opticals, trinkets, pins, photos, unit flags, patches, hankies, artillery shells, bicycles, crates, cameras, horse carriages, medals. Anything military related since the civil war and for any country ever involved in a war. Czechoslovakia, Rhodesia, Serbia, Yugoslavia, syria. Tens of thousands of trinkets to observe and it is all dated and has a written description and it's all for sale. I've never walked into a museum to see every item with a price tag.

The Norwegian female spy who switched sides for WS, one of the most unlikely incidents in his memoir, turned out to be real ???

Letter to Hans-Hendrik Neumann, 9 Sep 1941, Feldpost Nr. 42216 (Used by 6SS. Neumann was the Ic of 6SS at that time. )

• Congratulating Neumann’s award of EK2 during the battles in Kure and Salla, and complained about his work in Amt VI.

• Stayed in Oslo with RH and Müller for 4 days last week; got acquainted with (Paul) Wegener on a sailboat voyage.

• Spoke in a jocular and sarcastic tune of getting to know a “Fräulein Höst”.

 * Hans-Hendrik Neumann (born 4 Aug 1910) joined the SA and NSDAP in 1930 in Chemnitz, and then transfered to the SS in 1931. He was recruited to the Chemnitz branch of SD in Dec. 1933, possibly by Herbert Melhorn (an assumption raised by US investigations against his NS background in 1988); and transferred to the SD-Hauptamt in Apr. 1935. He has been Heydrich’s adjutant from 1935 to at least 5 Jun 1940. The exact dates of his appointment and transformation from this post were unknown.

From 1940-1945 he was assigned to several different military units under the orders of Heydrich and Himmler, including SS-VT, “Deutschland” Bataillon, 3SS, 6SS, and 1SS. It was usually not for the purpose of military service but for the convenience of carrying out unknown“special missions”(Sonderaufgaben/Sonderauftrag) in Norway, Finland and Sweden.

The service in 6SS as Ic seemed to be his only real frontline mission. After that he returned to the SD on Oct. 7 and reported to Heydrich of this“special assignment”(N. meldet sich bei SS-Obergruppenführer Heydrich zwecks Anweisung Sonderauftrag.). He was then appointed as the Polizei-Attaché of German legation in Stockholm. When Paul Wegener became the Gauleiter of Wesser-Ems in May 1942, Neumann took over his post as Terboven’s deputy. His subsequent promotions in the WSS were issued when he was actually seated in his office.

Paul Wegener’s letter of recommendation and the personnel report drafted by 3SS both highly regarded his leadership and organizational skills.

Neumann became a senior executive of Philipp GmbH after the war. His NS background wasn’t put under investigation until 1988, when he applied for a USA visa. He was suspected of being the SD liaison officer in Operation Tannenberg, and taking parting in the scorched-earth actions in northern Norway - at least took no effective measurements against it. Details of his assignments in northern European countries camouflaged by WSS identities remained mostly unanswered.

1919: He was born on December 13th in Berlin

1926: He attended the Volksschule in Berlin

1933: Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany.

1938: Between April and September 1938 he served in the Reich Labor Service.

1938: He joined the Luftwaffle.

1939: He completed his training at a fighter pilot school in Vienna.

1939: The Second World War began.

1940: He fought in the Battle of Britain

1940: He was transferred to the 4th Staffel of Jagdgeschwader 52

1940: Oberleutnant Rudolf Resch confined Marseille to his room for five days for calling a fellow pilot a "silly pig". As punishment for "insubordination" – said to be his passion for American jazz music, womanizing and a blatantly "playboy" lifestyle – and inability to fly as a wingman, Steinhoff transferred him to Jagdgeschwader 27.

1941: His unit participated in the invasion of Yugoslavia.

1941: He was shot down on 23 April by second lieutenant James Denis.

1941: He by mid-September had shot down another eleven British planes.

1941: Marseille shot down Pat Byers of No. 1 Squadron. Royal Australian Air Force 451.Marseille flew to Byers Airport and left a note informing the Australians of his condition and treatment. He returned several days later to endorse the first note with the news of Byers' death. Marseille repeated these sorties after being warned by Neumann that Göring had banned further such flights.

1941: His sister was killed.

1942: He was decorated with the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.

1942: Due to poor health, he was sent on leave to Germany.

1942: During his stay he was personally decorated by Hitler with oak fronds and swords on the Iron Cross.

1942: He met Hitler for the first time, but thought ''The Fuhrer was a rather strange fellow''.

1942: Obergruppenführer Karl Wolff, of the Reichsführer-SS General Staff, confirmed that during his visit Marseille overheard a conversation in which crimes against Jews and other peoples were discussed.

1942: He befriended a black prisoner of war in the South African Army, Corporal Mathew Letuku, nicknamed Mathias.

1942: He died September 30.
