I chose this image because I had to light a large area of the setting with a single light.  I used a large octabank to light both the subject, Tumi, and the tree behind.  My goal was to recreate sunlight but to really focus it on the subject matter leaving the background in the shadows.

#Repost @danielehourihan with @make_repost ・・・ #lightingsetup for a recent job for @newleafpresents. You got @pbrysh looking all handsome there in the #reddigitalcinema display there. Our key light is an #arri #m40 book light off an 8x Ultra bounce pushing back through a 12x 1/4 grid. In photo 6 you can see that I’m running a @theragplace 12x12 fabric egg crate (LCD) on the front. The special on the back wall is an #arriskypanel s60 with the #octabank snap bag (also by #theragplace.) you can’t tell from here but under that black wrap snoot on the front I’m running the “LCD” on that as well. (Which @mikesundp was able to put back in “relative” order having accosted it over the weekend! (No, I kid, it was fine (*as I give the “Administrative Eyebrow”.))) For an edge light we’re using an #aperture 300D with the #fresnel attachment. I have extremely mixed feelings about this unit, but the second generation D series put out a lot of light and when used with the fresnel attachment they’re a pretty good unit. There’s a lot I could gripe about, but I’d take a 300D over an Arri L7... and did... but that doesn’t mean I endorse the rest of the unholy terrors that Aperture Lighting is setting lose upon the world... but... the D series are pretty good (as long as you don’t get a first generation.) Lastly a 4x8 sheet of Bead board just leaning on a C stand for a bit of passive positive on the fill side. I had nothing there at first, going for a REALLY contrasty look, but when it was pointed out to me that we were not making a true crime documentary I added the bead board to return a little ambient to bring up the fill side while maintaining a tasteful amount of contrast. Finally no trip to @redsky_studios is complete with out a quick visit with @themarksacco and @dar.laville and seeing the old #molerichardson studio #10k and #ziplight in the lobby. Over all a fun day with @strauss625 and @jonnyb41 and my right hand man the @jablonski_nick I hope this was... illuminating? No? Am I allowed to make puns that bad? I wish I would have done some BTS set up images. Because this shot has about five or six lights and more flags than the UN assembly to give it the mood. It’s great when you #photograph a celebrity and you have time to really play. It’s rare you get the time to really experiment. Because no amount of light testing on an assistant can mimic the face and contours of the actual subject. And #JimmyGnecco has one of the most unique and angular faces.
