I have been thinking that people in general love to bad mouth Thai BL dramas but there is a reason they are popular. So outside of the gayness, I triey to write down somethings that I see stand out compared to other countries BL dramas or that may be a reason it can stand out for you. Hi, are there any other records/stories/anecdotes of Shinsengumi members clashing with any of the three “Man-cutters?” The only ones I know so far was an anecdote from Juro Abe attacked both Okada Izo and Abe himself for being tools to kill people and one from an interview from Gensai’s grandson, Kawakami Toshiharu, where Kondo Isami would avoid him when they met. Thanks.

The Asks I get on tumblr definitely keep me on my toes, and this one took a couple of days to answer because I needed to do some checking of sources first.

I may not be so much of a fount of knowledge as I am a bucket of random trivia and a puddle of "I know where to find that", so occasionally I have to dig a little deeper for a useful answer. (And hopefully this is a useful answer...)

A quick timeline:

In 1862, Kyoto saw a lot of upheaval, both politically and with ronin from various domains. It was also in this year that many of the tenchu (divine punishment) assassinations were carried out.

On 10 April 1863, the Roshigumi arrived in the city.

Although the group wasn't there to police the city and didn't last long because of Kyokawa Hachiro's false pretenses in assembling it, the members who chose to remain in the city formed the Mibu Roshigumi, which in August 1863 became the Shinsengumi.

The Shinsengumi were under the command of Matsudaira Katamori of Aizu, who was the military commissioner for Kyoto, and their purpose became patrolling the streets and restoring order.

The Shinsengumi left Kyoto in January 1868.

Therefore: any interactions between the Hitokiri and the Mibu Roshi / Shinsengumi in Kyoto take place between early 1863 and January 1868.

Okada Izo

Okada Izo left Kyoto in January 1863 and came to Edo, where he was initially living with Takasugi Shinsaku. After Takasugi was recalled to Choshu, Izo became Katsu Kaishu's bodyguard until he left (for reasons unknown) and returned to Kyoto. I don't know when exactly he returned to Kyoto, but it seems to have been fall or winter 1863.

After hiding himself in the city for a while, he was arrested for burglary in May 1864 by the Kyoto magistracy, jailed, and then banished from the city and returned to Tosa.

Although Ryomaden shows Izo being hunted by members of the Shinsengumi, I haven't seen anything in available historical records to suggest the Shinsengumi and Okada Izo ever crossed paths, at least not where they would have recognized him.

And while we don't know a lot about Izo's time in hiding, we do know that he was using an alias (Tetsuzo) and had sold at least his long sword, perhaps even both swords, to make ends meet. As such, he was unlikely to put himself into situations where he would have encountered the Shinsengumi.

The record of Abe Juro speaking about Okada Izo appears to be from the late Meiji era. In his statements, he compares Okada Izo to Okita Soji and Oishi Kuwajiro of the Shinsengumi, stating that all three were people without ideological convictions who were being used as tools to kill.

I have not read anything that would suggest Abe ever met Okada Izo, but he did know both Okita and Oishi personally because he used to be a member of the Shinsengumi until he left with Ito Kashitaro's group. It is possible he was using later knowledge gained by hearing or reading about Okada Izo to make this statement to disparage Okita and Oishi, and I'm inclined to think of it that way because there don't appear to be other records of Abe speaking about Izo.

Kawakami Gensai

Kawakami Gensai was in Kyoto until late September or early October 1863. He left the city shortly after the Bunkyu Coup (also known as the Coup of 18 August), which took place on 29 / 30 September 1863 (western calendar).

He returned after July 1864 to seek revenge for the death of his mentor, Miyabe Teizo, who was killed when the Shinsengumi raided the Ikeda-ya on 8 July 1864. However, I haven't found any evidence that Gensai and the Shinsengumi had direct interactions, let alone crossed swords.

Gensai was said to have carried out many assassinations, but the only one attributed to him with certainty was that of Sakuma Shozan on 12 August 1864. (As an aside here, Sakuma Shozan was Katsu Kaishu's brother-in-law. He was married to Kaishu's younger sister, Junko.)

There is the claim that "even Kondo Isami would avoid him if they passed each other in the street." The only source for it appears to be Kawakami Gensai's grandson, Kawakami Toshiharu, and there's no way to tell whether he was sharing family lore, or whether he was trying to use his grandfather's name for political gain. (Toshiharu was active with Dai Nihon Seisanto, a nationalist-fascist political organization, in the 1930s.)

If Gensai was out for revenge against the Shinsengumi, you'd think he wouldn't simply allow Kondo Isami to "avoid him" in the street; he'd try to find a way to attack him.

I will eventually write about Gensai separately, I think, but here's a bit of an aside: He was very small in stature, just about 5ft tall (150cm), and fair-skinned. Apparently people commonly "thought at first glance that he was a woman dressed as a man." He was married and had a son (Gentaro), and he was described as soft-spoken and gentle with his family.

Tanaka Shinbei

Tanaka Shinbei was active in tenchu assassinations in the Kyoto area from August 1862 until July 1863, occasionally working together with Okada Izo, notably in the assassination of Honma Seiichiro.

The reason Shinbei and Izo worked together was that they both took orders from Takechi Hanpeita. Takechi and Shinbei had a much closer relationship than Takechi and Izo: they had become sworn brothers in August 1862.

On 5 July 1863, Tanaka Shinbei apparently assassinated the court noble, Anegakoji Kintomo. I'm saying "apparently" because he never made a confession. His arrest was based on the fact that his sword, which he claims had been stolen two days prior, was found at the scene.

Immediately after the assassination, Bojo Toshikatsu demanded Aizu arrest Tanaka Shinbei. Matsudaira Katamori then dispatched Ando Kyuzaemon (whose name I am hopefully reading correctly) to take several officials and some troops to make the arrest.

The sources I have don't specify whether the troops were Aizu's own or whether Matsudaira Katamori sent Ando and the officials to accompany the Shinsengumi to make the arrest. I've seen various discussions about this online but no concrete answer, so it may or may not have been the Shinsengumi that arrested Shinbei.

At any rate, Shinbei was arrested and because Aizu did not have its own prison in which to hold him, he was handed over to the Kyoto magistrate. During the interrogation, Shinbei asked to see the sword that had been found at the scene, and when it was handed to him, he used it to kill himself. (Outstanding police work, gentlemen. Why would you hand him the sword? *facepalm*)

Nakamura Hanjiro

Nakamura Hanjiro arrived in Kyoto in spring 1862 alongside a large group of Satsuma samurai who were accompanying Shimazu Hisamitsu, the domain's regent and father of the current (but still under-age) daimyo, to Satsuma's residence in the city.

After the Terada-ya incident of 29 May 1862, during which some of his acquaintances had been killed and/or injured, Hanjiro became closely involved with the Sonno-Joi movement in Kyoto. As Saigo Takamori put it in a letter: "He associates with Sonno-Joi ruffians and visits the residence of the Choshu domain."

Even though Hanjiro's name is included in the list of hitokiri, like Kawakami Gensai there is only one assassination ascribed to him with any certainty, that of Akamatsu Kosaburo.

Akamatsu was a scholar and disciple of Katsu Kaishu who was suspected of being a shogunate spy. On 30 September 1867, Hanjiro killed him in broad daylight with a single stroke of his sword, which was verified by Arima Tota, who was present, and by an entry in Hanjiro's diary.

Hanjiro is perhaps the only person in the list of hitokiri for whom we can find an actual connection with the Shinsengumi, although it seems that he never had opportunity to cross swords with them.

Hanjiro knew - if not personally, then through other people - Ito Kashitaro and the former Shinsengumi members who had formed Goryo-Eji because Ito was meeting with individuals from Satsuma.

When Ito was assassinated by the Shinsengumi on 14 April 1867, Hanjiro was involved in helping former Goryo-Eji members hide at Satsuma's Kyoto residence.

Just as Hanjiro knew about the Shinsengumi, the Shinsengumi were aware of him due to his involvement in the Sonno-Joi movement in the city. He was likely on their list of "people to watch out for" and they would have been aware of his skill as a practitioner of Jigen-ryu swordsmanship.

There is at least one source quoting Kondo Isami as having warned members of the Shinsengumi: "Don't deal with Nakamura Hanjiro of Satsuma alone!" In other words, if you do encounter him during a raid, your swordsmanship would be no match for him. (As a reminder, a high level of swordsmanship was not a requirement for joining the Shinsengumi!)

And while Hanjiro may not have known Kondo Isami personally, he obviously had a lot of respect for him as a samurai. Arima Tota, who was a close friend of Hanjiro, was Satsuma's vice-chief of staff who arrested Kondo on 28 April 1868. When Hanjiro learned from Arima Tota that Kondo had been beheaded instead of being allowed to commit seppuku, he was said to have been very angry.

Hanjiro is another person who will eventually get his own post, but here's a bit of an aside: After the Kinmon incident, a large part of Kyoto burned to the ground and many people were left homeless. Hanjiro's friends noticed he would leave with two rice balls in his sleeve everyday and wondered where he was going. When they followed him, they found that he was handing the food to people who had been displaced by the fire.

Lastly, there's one more man who was known as Hitokiri:

Hitokiri Kuwajiro, who was Oishi Kuwajiro of the Shinsengumi. He got this name because he was sent on assassination missions, most notably that of Ito Kashitaro, for which he was tried and beheaded in 1870. He was also (falsely) accused of the assassination of Sakamoto Ryoma.

Okita Souji and his subordinates

Workplace relationships are important.

Bosses and subordinates, in particular, can have stressful relationships if things don't work out. I think this was no different in the past than it is in today.

What kind of subordinates did Okita Souji, the Captain of the First Squad, work with?

Here's a summary.

Around the Twelfth Month of Bunkyu 3

Okita Souji: Born Tenpo 13

Sasaki Aijiro (佐々木愛次郎): Born Kouka 2. One of the "Five beautiful men of the Shinsengumi". He was killed by Saeki when he eloped with a woman in August of that year, but his name remained on the roster until December.

Shinozuka Minezo (篠塚峯蔵): Birth year unknown. After participating in the Ikedaya Incident, he was requested by the lord of Miyazu, his former domain, to return home, and left the Shinsengumi amicably.

Mishina Ichiro (三品一郎): Born Tenpo 12. Also known as Mishina Chuji (三品仲司). He participated in Ikedaya. After the Meiji Restoration, he belonged to the Shizuoka domain (Numazu Kinban, 沼津勤番) and worked with his younger brother Jiro to establish the prestige of Kondo and Hijikata.

The number of subordinates is small because the Shinsengumi had only been formed for a short time, but they are quite good members who didn't cause problems later on. Shinozuka Minezo is unknown, but the others are close in age so they probably communicated easily.

Among them, Sasaki Aijiro was so skilled that he demonstrated jiujitsu moves in front of Matsudaira Katamori, and he was also one of the "Five Beautiful Men of the Shinsengumi".

However, it's said that he was killed four months before this list was compiled.

In the "Shinsengumi Shimatsuki," there is an episode in which Sasaki, who was about to have his girlfriend taken as a mistress by Serizawa, was tricked by Saeki Matasaburo and others into deserting his unit, and was then slain.

In this story told by Yagi Tamesaburo, after the incident, Okita said, "It was all Serizawa's plan (あれはすべて芹沢の指図だった)".

I wondered how Okita knew that, but I guess he was trying to find out the cause because Sasaki was his own subordinate.

However, if Sasaki was enrolled at the time of this roster, that episode might be fictional.

Yet it seems to be true that Sasaki disappeared from the Shinsengumi after that, and that Okita Souji was talking about something that happened to Sasaki's life.

Around the Twelfth Month of Genji 1

Okita Souji: Born Tenpo 13

Aridoshi Kango (蟻通勘吾): Born Tenpo 10. Participated in the Ikedaya Incident and other incidents. Severely wounded in Aizu and hospitalized at Hakodate Hospital. Died in battle on Mt. Hakodate

Yamano Yasohachi (山野八十八): Birth year unknown. One of the "Five beautiful men of the Shinsengumi". He was Hijikata's retainer in Hakodate. After the surrender, he seems to have been engaged in salt manufacturing in the Shizuoka domain. After that, he returned to Kyoto and worked at an elementary school until 1896.

Tsukamoto Zennosuke (塚本善之助): Birth year unknown. Joined the Shinsengumi after the Ikedaya Incident, but apparently left by the following year.

Muro Takunosuke (室宅之助): Birth year unknown. Joined by the 11th month of Genji 1. It appears that he left the Shinsengumi after the Shogun announced his resignation.

Oishi Kuwajiro (大石鍬次郎): Born Tenpo 9. Sword style: Onoha Itto-ryu and Tennen Rishin-ryu. Son of a vassal of the Hitotsubashi family and student of Kondo. Known as Manslayer Kuwajiro, he killed Itou Kashitaro. After his defeat in Koshu, he went into hiding in Edo, but was arrested by Kano and others and executed for Itou's murder.

They are members who joined after the Ikedaya Incident.

Oishi Kuwajiro, also of the Tennen Rishin-ryu, has joined the group.

Other strong men assigned to the group include Aridoshi Kango and Yamano Yasohachi, who fought all the way to Hakodate.

Did Tsukamoto Zennosuke join the Shinsengumi because of the Ikedaya Incident's fame? Although he admired the Shinsengumi, he probably quit because he couldn't stand the harshness of reality. This is still common today.

Muro Takunosuke remained in the Shinsengumi for three years after this, so it doesn't seem that he didn't fit in with the Shinsengumi. Seeing that he left the Shinsengumi after the Shogun announced his resignation, it's possible that he later leaned toward an ideology of overthrowing the shogunate.

Nevertheless, overall, no one was seen to have conflicting purposes, and the addition of Oishi Kuwajiro must have made things easier for Okita.

Around the Fifth Month of Keio 1

Okita Souji: Born Tenpo 13

Kiyohara Kiyoshi (清原清): Born Tenpo 3. He became a part of the  Goryo-eji. After serving in the Goryo-eji, he was attached to the Satsuma clan and worked with Kano in Itabashi to uncover Kondo's true identity. Killed in battle at Shirakawa. Changed his name to Takekawa Naoe (竹川直枝 or 武川直江).

Tani Mantaro (谷万太郎): Born Tenpo 6. He opened a dojo in Osaka with Tani Sanjuro. Harada Sanosuke, Shimada Kai, and Abe Juro are his spear-fighting pupils. He joined the Shinsengumi one step earlier than his brother, but upon his brother's death, he left the Shinsengumi and devoted himself to running the dojo in Osaka.

Wada Juro (和田重郎): Birth year unknown. Joined the Shinsengumi by the 11th month of Genji 1. Killed in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi.

Oishi Kuwajiro (大石鍬次郎): Born Tenpo 9. Sword style: Onoha Itto-ryu and Tennen Rishin-ryu. Son of a vassal of the Hitotsubashi family and student of Kondo. Known as Manslayer Kuwajiro, he killed Itou Kashitaro. After his defeat in Koshu, he went into hiding in Edo, but was arrested by Kano and others and executed for Itou's murder.

Wado Teizo (輪堂貞三): Birth year unknown. Formerly an investigator for the Aizu Domain. In Keio 1, he was committed to protecting Yano Harumichi (矢野玄道), a scholar of Japanese studies. After escaping, he became a teacher in his hometown of the Saijo domain of the Iyo province (some say that he was released from his assignment from the Aizu Domain) After the Meiji Restoration, changed his name to Ohashi Eikin (大橋英金).

Miyakawa Kazuma (宮川数馬): Birth year unknown. Joined the Shinsengumi by the 11th month of Genji 1. Killed in battle at Yodo Senryo.

Abe Shinjiro (阿部信次郎): Born Tenpo 8. The same person as Abe Juro. Deserted after Serizawa's death. Reinstated once, but left the force in Keio 3 with the Goryo-eji. Plotted revenge for the Abura-no-Koji Incident and shot Kondo. After that, he attached himself to the Satsuma Clan and joined the Sekihotai. Later ran an orchard in Hokkaido.

Kimura Kota (木村広太): Born Kouka 3. Enlisted at Edo in the 4th month of Keio 1. Believed to have left the Shinsengumi by Keio 3.

Fujiwara Wasaburo (藤原和三郎): Born Tenpo 1. Escaped after the defeat in Koshu. Became a merchant in Edo, but was imprisoned in conjunction with other members of the Shinsengumi

Sakuma Nobuto (佐久間登人): Born Kaei 1. Enlisted at Edo in the 4th month of Keio 1. Believed to have left the Shinsengumi by Keio 2.

Miyagawa Nobukichi (宮川信吉): Born Tenpo 14. Tennen Rishin-ryu. Cousin of Kondo Isami. Protected Miura Kyutaro (三浦休太郎) in the Tenmanya Incident and died in battle.

By this time, the Shinsengumi had grown in size, and the number of members had increased considerably. Almost half of the subordinates were new recruits, and training must have been difficult.

Although the number of friends among the Shinsengumi members increased with Miyagawa Nobukichi, a Tennen Rishin-ryu practitioner, there were also those who were inclined towards overthrowing the shogunate, such as Kiyohara Kiyoshi and Abe Juro.

Kiyohara was a problem employee who "advocated righteousness" (義を唱え) in the unit and was hated by his colleagues, so he deserted the following year. He may have been a vocal advocate of the overthrow of the shogunate. He later joined the Goryo-eji.

Abe Juro, as detailed, is an anti-Kondo faction member. He was older than Okita and had some skill, so he was a difficult subordinate for Okita to deal with.

To add to that, Abe Juro deserted from the unit once, so Okita probably didn't trust him very much. It's likely that Abe's many bad comments about Okita in the Meiji era were also due to something that happened at that time.

It's said that 70% of stress in the workplace is caused by the relationship between superiors and subordinates.

Abe must have been stressed, but his boss, Okita, must have been even more stressed.

We don't know how long this group lasted, but considering that Okita became ill in the 2nd month of Keio 3, is it too much to think that this kind of stress may have been a contributing factor?

lemme break it down without yelling 

all the ships in canon happen in this universe as well. all the characters still have their same personalities, and therefore (presumably) would still have the same feelings as they do in canon. 

and here, jorn says he plays the bad guy and pressures the music club so that theyre serious and then win hot wave and then can date. 

what this means is, in canon, pat still has his isaan accent. pat still does the little “oh” thing. jorn still plays the bad guy and pressures them a lot. 

the only differences: 1. pat has glasses, which honestly just feels like more reason for jorn to like phat (”the way his glasses frame his face and make his big round eyes look slightly larger”). 2. pat is constantly suggesting that they disband. 3. jorn seems to want the band to stop being a thing, rather than pressuring them to do better and practice harder, but that’s presumably because in the canon universe, its not really common knowledge that the band cant date until after hot wave, whereas in this universe the characters seem to know without needing to find out from an external source (which is probably for plot convenience for time’s sake, but shut up it works), so, chances are in canon jorn just isnt aware that there are other options and thinks they have to leave the band in order to date. 4. definitely other things i just cant think of them rn 

what im tryna say here is all the evidence points towards patjorn being possible in canon as well as this universe. i will break this down further in a future post but for now i need to get on with this commentary

Review "Godzilla Minus One"

I went to see "Godzilla Minus One" directed by Takashi Yamazaki. I quite enjoyed it. There is actually a good story here and development of characters outside of the main thrust surrounding Godzilla. There is a narrative concerning the war and how many Japanese felt about the war, there is the narrative surrounding Koichi Shikishima (played by Ryunosuke Kamiki), his survivor issues with not being able to fulfill his duties as a kamikaze pilot and later not being able to save the lives of others and the loss of his parents, his meeting and interaction with Noriko Oishi (played by Minami Hamabe) who also lost her parents during the war and the coming together around Akiko, a baby. this leads to Koichi finding work with a group destroying mines in the waters off Japan, many failed attempts to destroy Godzilla by them and by others and Kenji Noda's (played by Hidetaka Yoshioka), the captain of the mine sweeper's crew, plan to destroy Godzilla. Through it all Godzilla swims and stomps and chews up and tosses off people, boats, train, buildings and much more. I also thought Godzilla's appearance was fairly good in this film. I thought the cinematography and story line was very good. I thought the acting was great and it certainly pulled me into the movie. The pacing was. Admittedly there were some incidents which seemed a little question, a little more luck than might seem reasonable but this is a Godzilla movie and actually even the questionable scenes were better than most kaiju films.

I am not the only one who thought this was a very good film. Critically it has been doing very well as is the amount of money it is bringing in at the box office.

I did decide to see it at a 4DX showing since I had never seen a film at a 4dx theater and this seemed to be a good film at which to experience it. And if you're wondering, "4DX is a state-of-the-art film technology developed by CJ 4DPLEX which delivers an immersive multi-sensory cinematic experience. 4DX incorporates on-screen visuals with synchronized motion seats and environmental effects such as water, wind, fog, scent, snow and more, to enhance the action on screen." The seat jerks this way and that, rumbles, blows air at you, lights in the theater flash, etc. Fortunately no water or snow enhancements occurred for this film. Well, I tell you what, I won't be seeing another movie in the 4dx theater. It was just more distracting than anything else. If you have a bad back or neck issues, I would definitely recommend that you DO NOT try to experience 4dx.

Giant of Light Playlists

Inspired by some posts I saw, I put together a playlist of music for the GoL experience. Then I split it in two, because of the duality built into the game. They might not be perfect for background music, since they're a bit lyric heavy in a way that might distract from the table, but there are some connections I'm happy with. Also, they work on shuffle, but the order is intended to make a rough sketch of an Episode of play from either perspective. They're on Spotify:

Side A: Heroes

-Goshowa Kudasai Ware no Na wo! (Endo Masaki)

This is the opening theme to Ultraman Z. Obviously, I was going to include some music from the franchise, but I didn't want it to be the whole playlist. I chose this one because the title and opening line translates to "I ask that you chant my name," which is a wonderful bit of poetry asking for faith.

-The Legend of Chavo Guerrero (The Mountain Goats)

This is about that faith from the other side, a song about having a hero. "The telecast's in Spanish, I can understand some / and I need justice in my life, here it comes," devastates me every time.

-Starman (David Bowie)

Maybe a bit obvious, but all the same, Ultraman is full of visitors from space whose differences from humanity leave them alienated, but still capable of seeing the beauty and value of the Earth.

-Hands (Oishi Masayoshi)

Theme to Ultraman R/B and my personal favorite theme in the whole franchise. The leads in this series have no experience or training and are thrown into the deep end and I like the way this track reflects the drive to stay positive. "These are the things we shouldn't have to protect."

-Pump it Up (Elvis Costello and the Attractions)

This represents the rising tension in the "Episode" happening here. The thumping, elegant bass line and lyrics about matching intensity always begged for an action scene in my mind.

-Brave Love, TIGA (Kagaku Tokusoutai, not the original version, this is a group that does covers of tokusatsu songs)

This is the ending theme to Ultraman Tiga and it's a bit of a parallel to Legend of Chavo Guerrero, since it's a plea to the title character. It's a child, asking their hero, please, do the things I can't. Protect the world. Show me how to be brave.

-X Gon' Give It To Ya (DMX)

Am I guilty of coming to the same conclusion as the writers of the Deadpool movie? Yes. But as a Millennial, I defy you to find a track that more powerfully says that shit is about to go down.

-Veridis Quo (Daft Punk)

Something wholly without lyrics to depict the final fight. I've always thought that the melody of this song implied a situation that's rapidly becoming more complicated.

-Dare (Stan Bush)

Come the man, cometh the hour, this is the personal theme of Hot Rod from The Transformers: The Movie (1986). Hot Rod is the chosen one, even if he doesn't know it until the end, but his theme is all about being brave enough to become the person needed. Also, the sample character Ultraman Giant Hero Cadmium is a direct reference to Hot Rod, including the piece of character art he's in.

-Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) (ABBA)

I think the transition from the last track to this one is the best thing I do in either playlist. Again, this is a song about who you want around when things get bad. Also feels final, like the fight can be won here.

-BRAND NEW WORLD (Miura Jam BR)

This is the opening theme to my favorite arc of One Piece (Enies Lobby), but that's incidental. Here, the track represents the "new world" created by the Main Characters in saving the day, and the moment of joy together after it happens.

-Ultraman 80 (Kagaku Tokusoutai, again a cover)

"He came to us from the stars." Nothing more than a moment of gratitude for this immense power that joins together with us to protect our world. Ultraman gets a bit religious (by design, the life of the original creator Tsuburaya Eiji was often defined by faith). Also a relaxing end to represent the "end credits."

Side B- Kaiju

-Trigger (Sakuma Takao)

This side's less optimistic, more conflicted, but I still wanted to open with a theme, this time from Ultraman Trigger. It's a bit more aggressive, all about letting loose. Doesn't connect to that show much, but it's exactly what's happening here.

-When You're Evil (Aurelio Voltaire)

Being self-consciously "evil" is mostly the provenance of teenagers, but there's a sort of immaturity to a lot of the Kaiju Users I took inspiration from when writing the game. There's a certain kind of person who says to themself "no, I'm bad, really, I'm dangerous, watch out!"

-Wolf Like Me (TV on the Radio)

Another approach to playing a Kaiju User is to have werewolf vibes: "this is something inside me and when I let it out, you should run." This is a good song to depict prowling around town, looking for trouble.

-Life on Mars? (David Bowie)

An intentional parallel to Side A, another Bowie track using aliens as a metaphor for alienation. This one's a bit grittier, more critical of society, and more explicitly Queer, which is why it's on this side.

-Werewolf Gimmick (The Mountain Goats)

Like I said, this vibe is strong. The theme of performance (and taking that performance too far) is also a good link to the way a Kaiju User might play with their public image.

-V: The Stand (Man or Machine) (The Protomen)

This song ruled my college years. With a fight imminent, two people who would rather not fight argue, proving why they have to. In your games, the primary Kaiju User can even be either side of the fight, depending on how you've built things up.

-It Has To Be This Way - Platinum Mix (Jimmy Gnecco)

Meme music it may be, but this is great for being the next phase of that argument as the fists start flying. It's only from one perspective, which is fun, because the speaker might be completely off-base about the similarities between the two fighters (which is the case in the game it's written for, a lot of the memes and such overlook that).

-Foreign Object (The Mountain Goats)

Kaiju Users are often at a disadvantage, and this song really captures the spirit of fighting uphill because you're meaner and even if you can't win, you'll make your opponent regret it.

-KARATE (BABYMETAL)

This is the song for the main fight here, picked mostly for sheer kinetic energy. BABYMETAL's trademark pop idol/heavy metal contrast here is the symbol for the fact that a lot of Kaiju may be city-destroying beasts, but people on the internet will still look at them and say "what a good dog!"

-Light Up The Night (The Protomen)

Sometimes, winning means being willing to burn yourself up.

-Hero (The Verve Pipe)

The mirror spot to When You're Evil for a reason. This is the truth at the core of that facade, that underneath the way they scorn humanity and embrace their outcast status with mischief, they really long to be accepted. And something that GoL tries to say is that you can be, even if your powers are scary and destructive, you can still be a hero, no matter what your self-loathing says.

-ZERO to INFINITY (Miyano Mamoru)

Another track from the franchise, this is the theme to the web series Ultra Galaxy Fight: The Absolute Conspiracy, which is mostly a big crossover punch-em-up. But here, I like the optimism of saying you can get to the end of your path as long as you keep pushing, which can be applied to Kaiju Users of many different moral orientations.

Whew! So I started out trying to not repeat artists at all, let alone on the same playlist, but it couldn't be helped, Beat The Champ by The Mountain Goats is the best album about wrestling ever (not a high bar, mind, but it's very good), and the parallels between pro wrestling and tokusatsu are very deep. Anyway, have fun, let me know your thoughts on the listening experience, and play the game!

Hi, RBS! Thank you for your writings. I love that you always made me think deeper about many stuff, even those that I thought trivial initially.

I'm just wondering what you think about how most of GGDD's endorsements seems to exacerbate the GG vs DD phenomenon. Do you think the way they seemingly endorsing rivals of similar products also contribute to their fan group's perpetual animosity with each other?

If there's anything interesting rivalry-wise about their endorsements, it's actually that no matter how powerful they are with sales, they seem to manage to carve out the brands between themselves without ever really being direct rivals for anything.

And this plays out time and time again, as turtles post pictures of their meals of Kai Xiao Zao noodles, Oishi potato chips and Master Kong Iced Tea, with some Lui Luimei fruit snacks for dessert or something.

GG and DD seem to do a great job of sharing everything without ever directly competing with each other.

As for why fan groups are in a perpetual rivalry, it's because shrimps and motos have prominent people at the top of their fandoms preaching to everyone that the other guy is their hated sworn enemy and rival, and that BXG are poison.

The hate is coming from the fans, not from GGDD, and often directly conflicts with/ignores GG and DD's stated wishes regarding fan behavior. Unfortunately, that's just the way things are.

It's how fan culture functions in China. It's just incredibly toxic. It's a huge part of why I hope (and believe) they will gradually move away from relying on those types of fans.

And if there's anything BXG have repeatedly proved, it's that it's possible to enjoy and support BOTH GG and DD, and buy their endorsement products avidly, without all the toxicity and rivalry the solos try to create.

Vice Versa ep 5

I find it just a little bit cool - whether a coincidence or not - that I noticed a lot of black and white use in last week's ep and then this week's theme is Winter White...maybe I was on to something?

Anyway, this week follows a little on from last week, in that there are a lot of blue-and-red and black-and-white pairings, a couple of green-and-yellow pairings, and then some some bits of brown and even less orange. And straight off the bat, we get almost all of these (just no green...although purple is its complementary colour):

In the next scene - following the episode title screen which blends 'shadowed'/black areas in with the white - Puen and Talay switch from colour to black and white (with the black and white sign behind them) whilst being told "Your soulmate might be closer than you think. Pay close attention to the person sitting next to you." The theme 'Winter White' might be a commentary on Talay's coolness towards love and relationships (and the use of black and white showing how Puen's views and actions sit on the opposite of that) and so him in white here seems apt. Blue is also seen as a 'cold' colour (which I think is Talay's colour), so his 'icy heart' is probably going to be thawed out by Puen's 'fiery redness'...or something... (Incidentally, in this scene both Aou and Up have blue on, and Chang has light pink).

Then, interestingly, when Pang is introduced, she's also in black and white and even though Talay and Puen aren't in colour, the light behind is full of it. Blue, of course for Talay (with Dol in red) and pink/purple behind Puen. I think the ambiguity of the colour (some might say pink, some might say purple) is also a nod to the ambiguity of Puen's words and actions towards Talay...especially following the library conversation where Talay offers his real name to Puen but Puen still continues to withhold his identity from Talay. It also indicates the coming uncertainty around Pang and her role in both the series and in either of them getting back to their home universe.

And once they're at dinner, this background lighting continues - with blue (and yellow) behind Talay, and red (and green) behind Puen. I love the placement of the umbrella pole, separating Puen and Pang on one side and Talay on the other, a visual representation of how Talay feels in this moment.

On the film set, we get more small blue and red details in the background...and Puen and Talay again in black and white but this time also with brown. If the show is continuing with the connection of brown with "seriousness", then I'm hoping it shows that the affection Puen has towards Talay is genuine. Notice also the random yellow objects in the background - the ladder and the cloth someone is folding - it was during this scene that I suddenly wondered whether the yellow and green pairings were actually just a nod towards the Oishi tea product placements. That would be hilarious if so!

Red-and-blue and black-and-white also showed up in the association (with a pop of brown maybe to indicate the seriousness of the recently-returned man's predicament and the reality of the consequences of the universe/body swap)...

...as well as in the four suits of the four friends - Up and Aou's trousers are white, Puen and Talay's black, and I think Up's jacket is a navy blue with red stripes (I actually wonder if I've seen someone wearing it before...), plus the blue seats. These four looked fantastic. This is how to colour co-ordinate with friends! (Dol and Jubjaeng also looked incredible!)

Then, towards the end, brown came back a little more (with Puen and Talay in the cinema) and Up and Aou bringing the blue and red. The orange hat also returned, and with black and white still featuring. All of this echoed back to the colours in the first scene, which is poignant since this is when they decided/realised that the Friend Credits group would be splitting up.

And in the last scene, the emphasis feels more towards the yellow/beige/ochre colours (although there are still small elements of red and blue [up's sweater and phone and Aou's t-shirt] and black and white [Puen's t-shirt and Up's hat]). It's this and some of the colours in the ep 6 preview that makes me want to make another prediction (even though I might be wrong) that I think next week's ep will be a shade in the region of yellow/ochre/beige/brown...we'll see!

Okinawa Electric Girl Saya is my oishi, so definitely check her out. a lot of her stuff is available on bandcamp, either from her own page or a label she frequents

HARU NEMURI is an obvious recommendation, i'm not as big onto her as others, but she's great. huge RAY fan, and their predecessor group, Tokyo Dots (they're hard to google)

3776 is one of the most unique musical groups ive ever heard, and Saijiki remains an utterly wild and bizarre album, even for pop music. Maison book girl are similarly avant-garde, playing a lot with odd time signatures in their music, and unusual instrumentation, making them stand out from any of their contemporaries. i love XOXO Extreme for being a 70s prog-inspired sort of thing, with their songs quoting the instrumentals of many different older prog bands, particularly Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. DAI DAI DAI, BiSH, and NEO JAPONISM all have cool stuff in their discography, with ∅, CARROTS AND STiCKS, and HERE NOW being my favorites, respectively. N-Feni is cool, tho i think they've since made their earlier stuff unavailable on streaming ("i have a little hangover" is the album to look for, might be under their old name). SAKA-SAMA are lit, too, for a more poprock sort of take on it (a lot of this is more punk-inspired)

so that's 12 bands! this is just scratching the surface with some of my faves. there's a whole lot of fun stuff out there, and what's especially cool is that most of this stuff isn't on major labels, as many of these are on independent labels or even self-release their music, meaning they don't have the same baggage as some of the more standard idol groups

I love your response about the friend group splitting up and I have decided to rewatch.... but lowkey I do better with breakup scenes than friend split up scenes so we'll see how that goes.

Also, I only watched this once when it aired so omg I forgot how literally instant it is for them. Puen was sold ASAP like yep, I will date this boy.

But I have to skip the stupid snowcone scene even though it's also my favourite thing with how utter NONSENSE it is like omg no that's not how snow works

i personally find all kind of separations incredibly hard to witness, because even when things end badly and the characters themselves choose to leave, there’s still all this history, all this care that there once was, and it’s painful to think that it will only get to exist in memories now. however, the reason why i can deal with the separations in vice versa, as heartbreaking as they are, is that they’re not done for shock value or the result of bad writing, but they make sense in the worldbuilding of the show: we know since the beginning that they’re inevitable, that at some point puen and talay are gonna have to leave all the people they met in the alternate universe behind, so we come to appreciate those bonds even more, and even if we won’t ever get full closure we can at least be thankful that puen and talay got to say their goodbyes

so yeah, i do hope that it won’t be so upsetting as to ruin your enjoyment of the show!!!

moving on to more pleasant topics, THEY REALLY DO HAVE SUCH AN INSTANT CONNECTION!!!!! it's not love at first sight because they don't even know what they look like, but they do click with each other right off the bat like it often happens in real life too and it's just so incredible to see!!!! and then talay drunkenly kisses him and puen speedruns all the stages of falling in love and goes from 'hope this doesn't awaken anything in me' to 'BY CHOICE AND INTENTIONALLY IM GONNA LOVE HIM ON PURPOSE THIS IS THE MAN IM GOING TO MARRY' in the span of two episodes

[ 00.16 22/09] Di malam ini, aku ngetik surat di selembar kertas yang aku robek dari salah satu binder mata pelajaran kewirausahaanku, tepat di tanggal ini satu bulan yang lalu, kita baru memulai pdkt kalau kata anak muda zaman sekarang. Kisah kita lumayan agak lucu sebenernya. Iya, aku memacari temanku sendiri, temanku dua tahun lalu, enggak kebayang kan?"Kenapa baru pacaran?" "Kenapa enggak pacaran dari dulu" this is the problem, kita sempet hilang kontak dan kita baru bertemu lagi 3 bulan lalu di chat group yang bernama infinity. To be honest kita pas temenan enggak terlalu akrab, cuma sering say hi di group lalu setelah itu asik dengan urusan masing-masing, namun si yang paling dominan ini diam-diam sering memperhatikan hal-hal kecil yang di lakukan pemuda yang saat ini mengambil peran submissive, iya dia sedikit menaruh hati kepada si pemuda itu.

Aku yang saat itu bosan karena merasa selalu gak cukup meminta temanku buat carikan aku partner frls, haha Hanan padahal dia lagi dekat juga sama seseorang, memang manusia selalu merasa enggak cukup ya, simple aja sih aku bilang ke dia "ja cariin gue frls" sontak temanku kaget "tiba-tiba?" Reza dia temanku, eja panggilan akrab nya, "mau sama Jay?papa gua, tapi dia lagi gak on" di tengah itu dia masih berfikir siapa orang yang cocok buat fake relationship sama temannya yang sedang mencari jodoh sejatinya, selang beberapa detik kemudian ia mengutarakan idenya, idenya yang membuat hidupku berubah 100% sampai saat ini "kenapa gak sama Imron?" Nama itu..ah ga mungkin dia mau sama aku, satu-satunya pikiran yang keluar dari otak. Tapi, apa kalian tau?iya Reza langsung kontak Imron dan bilang Hanan mau ngajakin frls, selang beberapa menit ada notifikasi dari mesenggerku, kalian bisa tebak notif dari siapa?yep, dari pemuda yang baru saja jadi topik hangat didalam roomchatku dengan Reza "jadi frlsnya? kata eja lagi nyari frls" detik itu juga kisah kita berdua dimulai, bukan sepasang teman lagi, melainkan dua orang yang di jadikan satu kesatuan dalam konteks romantis.

Untuk aku yang udah di buat setengah gila dalam satu bulan belakangan, dibuat gila waktu aku pertama ketemu kamu, tapi kamu sudah bersikap manis. Manis yang enggak wajar sampai aku mengira kalau aku masih berputar di fase remaja yang tergila gila dengan cinta monyet.

Dibuat jauh lebih gila begitu di beberapa malam yang luang, kamu mengirimi beberapa pesan teks yang kunilai agak gombalisme, tapi berhasil menimbulkan perasaan menyenangkan yang menyebar di perutku.

"Gue mau coba pdkt dulu sama lo, gimana?" Aku tau ini agak gila, dan gak tau kena angin apa tiba-tiba dengan lancangnya aku mengajak si pemuda yang lebih tua setahun dariku untuk 'pendekatan' si pemuda itu cuma tersenyum sambil menampakan sederetan giginya yang rapih "Gua ga nolak, tapi ga usah ngarep banyak dari gua ya. gua anaknya flat kaya jalan tol sumatera" kurang lebih begitu katanya.

Aku merasa jadi jauh lebih gila lagi -dan nyaris berpikir apa aku lebih baik menerjunkan diriku langsung ke rumah sakit jiwa terdekat.

Karena selama ini Hanan hidupnya cuma tergila-gila sama salah satu merk makanan bernama popcorn oishi. tapi, popcorn oishi nggak berhasil membuat aku segila itu kalau aja kamu nggak tiba-tiba berkata dengan raut serius dan intonasi yang mendadak rendah -ancang-ancang yang nggak pernah kamu tunjukkan ke orang-orang selama ini " Ga tau gua juga bingung, gua kira gua sukanya sama yang lucu lucu doang, nyatanya sama lo pun gua suka "

Musik guyon waton adalah setengah dari jiwa sang pemuda kelahiran Oktober 2001, enggak pernah absen untuk mendengarkan music dari band asal Jogjakarta itu, memang predikat heeseung Jogja melekat banget pada diri sang pemuda berzodiak libra ini.

Di beberapa waktu aku sering memperhatikan dia posting beberapa potongan lirik lagu dari band tersebut, mungkin lagu-lagunya relate sama kisah dia?pikirku yang agak sok tau itu, tapi enggak dengan lagu 'guyon waton - sebatas teman' karena secara tiba-tiba si yang lebih submissive ini nyeletuk dengan spontan di tengah obrolan mereka yang cukup flirty "Sayang sayang mulu, emang lo sayang gue?"

Selang beberapa menit kemudian si yang lebih tua membuat postingan dengan caption "cara nembak biar langsung di terima gimana?" Aku dibuat nyaris terkekeh karena melihat tingkah si pemuda satu itu, padahal walaupun dia nembak aku dari setangkai bunga yang dia curi di kebun pak RT pun, aku pasti terima.

"ya jadi gitu nan. walaupun gua ga punya banyak meme, tapi mau ga lo nyoba buat pacaran sama heeseung jogja satu ini? kita udahin aja hubungan tanpa status ini. sorry gua ga bisa janjiin lo apa apa"

Aku enggak perlu menunggu lama lagi untuk menjawab pernyataan kamu, dengan anggukan dan senyum kelewat batas.

John doesn't want to go out under the table,very stubborn... It is his schedule to take his shower coz I already cleaned the bathroom....Even if I show him his treat he is ignoring me... Stubborn! I'm somehow stress...

Angels, I left my phone in SAVEMORE SALITRAN coz it didn't consistently open due to system update coming from Samsung. I know they are considered in a way a new people that I can be trusted coz they always help me if I had have trouble on my Samsung phone. But this is the first time I left it with Kuya or Brother R-Jay for total check-up of my Samsung Phone.

I will go back tomorrow noon to claim my phone. I saw people or customers who left as well their phone and they just claimed it the next day.

I went there around 2pm and returned around 5pm and still the phone is on recovery and I know they are telling the truth. I just want my angels on the other side to know that my phone is not with me right now... I also checked that the update is not successfully consistent it takes 30 minutes and sometimes it will repeat again. It is important for me to put here in detail that I left my phone on Kuya R-Jay and Renz. Someone from the 2 of them knew my password but I can change it by tomorrow.

I feel bad, youtube removed my live video and they just left this " Having You Near Me"... I saved 2 videos... Awhile ago I told Kuya R-Jay and Renz that I will cry if they can't recover or save my pictures coz it is important for me to have a selfie, so that I can have my own made memories when I get older. It is good to tell a story with a pictures as memories and so that friends can see what you are sharing about...

Nowadays I can't arrange an album and can't print pictures coz I'm always on a tight budgeting.
