When It Rains (Ethan x MC)
Tumblr media
Book: Open Heart Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x Dr. Marchia Ramsey (F!MC) Premise: A little dance underneath the gentle drizzle. Rating / Category: General / Fluff Warning(s): None Word Count: 384 words Artist: @/artbyainna on Instagram
A plateau of dull grey sat above them, large clouds huddled together as they walked down the narrow streets of Paris. It was quiet down there, with only the discordant rumbling of thunder as their companion, getting louder and louder. As the fresh scent of earthiness galloped with the winds, they are reminded again about the oncoming rain that was about to fall.
The couple quickened their pace, hoping to seek refuge as soon as possible. Warm lights guided them to their next destination—a place that was merely a few meters ahead, couple minutes away.
Yet, they were too late.
Marchia looked up, the dark sky drumming with the anticipation of release. Soon enough, droplets of water poured on to the pavements, singing an enchanting serenade to those who are willing to listen. A harmonic, gentle tune that soothes the mind, mends the soul.
And all of the sudden, she halted.
Her right hand, locked in with his, pulled Ethan’s body to an abrupt stop. He turned to face his wife, thoroughly confused and intrigued to find the reason behind this act.
What he saw, however, took his breath away.
Her rose cheeks gleamed, lips casting a smile that would turn his stomach upside down. Pearls of water run through her gold dusky hair, slowly trickling downwards to reach her dress. The white chiffon material became lightly soaked under the drizzle, translucent, outlining the perfect symmetry of her sylphlike figure.
Surrounded by an ethereal glow, Ethan was blessed with the glorious view of his Queen, the ruler of his heart.
He moved closer, placing one hand on her hips, and another on the nape of her neck. Glued together, his thunderous ocean eyes locked with Marchia, letting himself drown in the depths of her emerald forest—feasting in the irrefutable existence of her beauty.
“Kiss me,” she whispered.
Without any preamble, he granted her simple yet tantalizing wish. His grip around her tightened, then in one swift movement, he swirled her petite body. A short squeal escaped her, followed by her signature giggles. As cliché and cheesy as it sounds, Ethan could not wait to capture her lips and taste her once more.
Because he was all hers, until the end of time.

🫀🧠🫀🧠🫀🧠🫀🧠🫀🧠
The competition was now happening. The only intern I care about is Casey and she nearly lost a patient. She tracks me down to give me an update. I tell her she is lucky that she has another chance. I then ask her if she will help me test out the FMRI machine. I did not know what questions to expect but when she asked me about attending/resident relationships, I told her that the attending is to teach and that any romantic entanglements is from neurochemical responses due to heightened stress and regular exposure. A part of me does, has to believe it if I am being honest with myself but there is something about Casey I know that is different, she could never be an arrangement like I had with Harper but long term, surely not. We finish up and we head back to work. I eventually get Naveen in and take his scans. I hear that Casey’s patient has a cacophony of things go wrong but handles the situation so much better. I congratulate her and leave. She hands me the scan and I can see she is curious. I say nothing. No one knows that I am treating Naveen and I need it to stay that way.
The competition is running. The other attendings give daily ratings and I post the ratings weekly and it is just giving me more work to do. Casey is improving weekly which I am pleased about but she is the only person I am caring about in this goddamn competition. Naveen has me worried. He is now in sepsis and Panacea have been researching new treatments but I am getting nowhere and it is frustrating. It is meaning having to go to the medical symposium. Already I am filled with dread. Declan Nash.I have managed to keep panacea out, and I want them out. Hopefully I can get what I need without compromising the team.
I thought he was doing a great job of not being discovered but I am wrong. I look up from Naveen and I see a shocked Casey. I go out and I ask her not to tell anyone. She tells me that if she wants me to keep it secret she needs to know fully what the secret is. I am torn. Can I trust anyone like this again but it appears I am left with little choice. I know I should not be inviting her over to my house but where to discuss this. It was the only place that I knew we would be truly alone. The time comes. The only thing that I am concerned about is whether I can keep it as professional as possible. The intercom buzzes and I let Casey in. My brain is a jumble of thoughts, Casey makes a comment about the view and all I do is quickly dismiss it by stating I am rarely here to enjoy it and hope that covers the thoughts of impropriety that are running through my mind. I offer her a glass of wine, and internally chastise myself. “You wanted this to be professional then what are you doing?”
Casey allows me be in control of the timing for the evening. I tell her how Naveen had become unwell and how at the beginning it appeared to be a seasonal illness until it was not. The forgetfulness, the body not doing what it should, kidney issues. When it got too hard to hide, he quit. I persuaded him to let me treat him in secret but I keep coming up empty. She puts her hand on my knee, I do not flinch but muster all the will power to not take it further. We discuss the case, as the evening goes on I feel lighter, unburdened. She assures me I am no longer alone in this. She leaves. I switch to scotch. “I am no longer alone.” The phrase hits me. I know that she is talking about the secret of me treating Naveen but given the death of Delores, everything with Naveen and the changed dynamic with Harper, I had never felt more alone. Then my thoughts go to her hand on my knee and my lack of removing it. Am I that starved for physical touch? Then my mind goes to our interactions. Could I be getting feelings for her of more than professional? No, I tell myself. It is just a neurochemical response from heightened stress I tell myself. Then I remember the tingle in my arm on that first day and I knew that there was no way that was neurochemical. My thoughts then go to our roles and how much of a hypocrite I am. I ended the arrangement with Harper as she was now my superior but here I was entertaining the thought of a relationship with a subordinate. All I knew is that I had someone to help with Naveen and someone who appeared to be someone I could trust. I head to bed, I then masturbate to the thoughts of what I wanted to do to Casey. I wait for the regret and cycle of self loathing but tonight it does not come, tonight there is a feeling of peace and I have the best night sleep I have had in a long time.
A few days later I see Casey. She said it felt good to do what it takes. I also know that she has kept my secret about treating Naveen. Which is of great relief but also comforting knowing that I am not alone anymore. I squeeze her arm affectionately, congratulating her on her win but also for keeping my secret. It was a gesture of appreciation on the surface but I knew it had a deeper meaning and then I spotted Harper. She had to have seen it and I was proved right a mere hour later when she confronted me about my feelings for Dr Valentine. I deny it, even though I know I am lying. There are feelings that I am denying but I have too. In a bid to prove Harper wrong I assign Casey a challenging patient. She is affronted and I do not blame her, the accusation that I was punishing her for knowing about Naveen hurt but I did not want to tell her I was proving a point that I was not favouring her in any way. To my relief she figures out the situation with Mr Platt. I tear him a new one when Casey figures it out. The disrespect he showed Casey and myself was not called for. I was glad that she did not give up despite wanting too and I hoped it showed her that all our patients no matter how rude deserved our due diligence.
The competition goes on. I swear the interns get more and more rabid each week and each week Casey is improving. I try to keep the work she is doing with me in secret out of the competition standings but I can tell that the secret patient is helping her with all her others and her professional confidence is sky high. I can tell Naveen is enjoying the extra company also. He is getting a knowing glint in his eye however. I ignore it. My mind does drift to getting Casey to go with me to the conference in Miami. I still had not heard and I was hoping someone who was not me would be able to get the information I wanted. I was also reluctant to leave Naveen but I had to do this. The results for the week were due the day before I flew out. I was hoping Casey would be number one but even if she was not, she certainly was the most improved intern and surely that needed rewarding. The results are out and Casey is on top, I am proud of her and relieved. I know she has worked hard within the hospital and deserved it. I then announce that Casey will be coming with me to the conference. Harper is shocked and annoyed. I then state that it will give Casey good insight into the industry and also it would be easier if I took her then hiring an assistant for the duration. The reality though starts to sink in. We have enjoyed a great working relationship which has translated into her results of late but the line is blurring and the feelings I have are getting harder to ignore, no matter how much I tell myself I am imagining them or that she is my subordinate. I know it will be a test of my fortitude, one that I have to pass if I am to continue to be a good mentor to her.
Conference time and it does not take long for people to want me. I send Casey to get us checked in and I am shocked that we have one room. We have to make it work. I tell her I will happily take the couch. I then feel bad for using her to get the information I want as we head to the floor and I can see the disappointment when she questions me if she is truly the top intern. I tell her it is genuine, I would have come up with another reason for her to come. She thankfully agrees but state she is only doing this for Naveen. I stay out of sight but close to hear what is happening. It frustrates me that Declan cottoned onto me being involved but I am not surprised. Casey is apologetic but I do not blame her. It is not her fault that Declan still holds a grudge against me for embarrassing him in public. We head to our suite. Instead of celebrating we would be commiserating. After shoving all thoughts of impropriety deep they head to the reception. We part ways early. Something I am thankful for. I engage some of the doctors in some insipid small talk. I eventually find my way to a poker table and I do not know what to feel seeing Casey there. I can see she is making a play for the information but I can see her struggle to come up with some terms. I refuse to let her sacrifice herself for the cause so I step in to take Casey’s place. I know I will regret this but I offer Declan what he has always wanted. The right to conduct medical research on developmental drugs and using the team as a vehicle in that. The game is tense and I have 4 kings, a hand that I know is a winning one but do I lie and say he is winning? He said he would give me the information but me besting him so publicly would make it difficult to get what I require. I decided lying is the risk I need to take and it paid off. He was looking smug but gave me what I wanted. I knew I had a panacea sized problem I needed to solve and I knew that if Naveen found out I would not hear the end of it but he was worth it. We head back to the room and the balcony. The beverages we had at the reception and the bottle of wine I ordered were lowering my inhibitions and god Casey was looking more gorgeous than ever. Before I know it I am kissing Casey and she reciprocates. We stay at the railing and continue, my hands could not get enough of her and her breast was more supple than I ever imagined. She heads into the bed and I follow. All the thoughts of what I wanted to do to her running wild but then the cycle of reasons not to kick in as I crossed the threshold. I do badly want to ignore it but I know I could not go back to being just an intern and attending if I continued. Casey is hurt and I do not blame her but I can not be responsible for ruining her career before it begins. She is hurt and so am I. After she has gone to bed I have a shower, even an icy cold blast does not kill my erection. The session is intense and the guilt and self loathing returns.
To say things are awkward is an understatement. Even Naveen has picked up on the change of dynamics. Neither of us tell him what happened or didn’t happen in Miami but something tells me he somehow knows just by looking at us. The sepsis treatment appears to be working but then he coughs up blood and we have to do some lab work. Casey confronts me about us. She wishes I stop lying to myself. I know I am but I have too. I know she is being the subject of malicious gossip and sabotage but I can not pursue what I want with her. If I do, the rumours will be worse, given her position in the competition. I know the achievements are hers and hers alone. We continue to work but it is hard.
I am dirty with myself for Casey and now for getting Panacea into the hospital. The deal with the devil was necessary but now their appeared to be no way out. I witness something that did not look right and it involved Casey. She assures me that everything is fine and I do not need to worry. I do, however.
I do not give it a second thought until we all hear that our long time patient Mrs Martinez died in Argentina and that the family are bringing the body back for a full autopsy. She tracks me down in the cafeteria. She tells me everything. On one level I was proud of her but also saddened as she could potentially be throwing away all that she worked hard for. I take her to the opera. I am awaiting some test results for Naveen but it appears I am not getting them tonight. I narrate the opera for her. I can see that she sees the same parallels I see. I upturn my hand to meet hers and our fingers intertwine. I chastise myself briefly, but her hand in mine just feels so right. The opera ends and she is emotional. She kisses me. I kiss back and pull away. “Us, it is complicated.” I knew I was lying, us could not happen, it is unethical, she is my subordinate and winning the competition, a relationship with me would tarnish all that she has worked for and she did not deserve that.
“Well for me it is not.” I should rebuke her but I want to kiss her again one last time. So that is what I do. The house lights come on and we break the kiss. We go our separate ways home. I know if I took her we would end up at mine and as much as I wanted her up against my windows writhing in sheer ecstasy, it could and would not happen. Instead I drink to stop the thought. Naveen is getting worse, Delores and if an investigation is called for what happened with Mrs Martinez I know Casey could end up gone. The common thread is me. I am a poisoned chalice, I know Delores decided to wait with the baby but I was still involved, Naveen dying and Casey. Then I look back on all the relationships that I have cared about with someone, Estelle, Tobias, Harper, Naveen, Delores, Casey, Louise. They all have one thing in common.Me. In that moment I am alone, more alone than when I was when Louise walked out, it is now that I concede that I am unworthy, unloveable and as much as it was painful, that I was better off alone. I scream then cry and fall into a troubled sleep, the images of a torn Casey taunting me in my dreams.
The next day comes and my worst suspicions with Casey and Naveen are confirmed. The latest round of tests show that Naveen only has a month to live. I know he will not want to stay and I could not feel like any more than a failure. Casey is also being investigated, well the whole group but I know she will be hard pushed for anything fair, given how much of the ethics committee is in the back pocket of Panacea and Declan.
The test results shake me a lot, I know Casey needs me as her mentor but I have failed her too and she does not need to be tarnished by any association with me so I do what I do best and shut her out.
I put off telling Naveen but I know I have too. Casey tracks me down and comes with me. It is harrowing but somehow it is easier with her there. I give Naveen the news. He is not disappointed in me, he knows I gave it my all. It does not make me feel better. He does what I knew he would do and leaves. Me and Casey see him out. Everyone he sees is surprised to see him. We make our way out front. He says goodbye to myself first, giving me a big hug and bids farewell to Casey. We watch him catch the bus. Casey kisses me softly. I return the kiss and kiss down her neck into I burrow my face into the crook of her neck. At that moment I knew what I would do next. We separate and head in. Harper sees us and raises an eyebrow and then asks if it was true about Naveen. I say “He is gone and so am I” as I rip my badge off and hand it to her. Harper is shocked and Casey runs after me and tries to block my exit. She sais she needs me, as well as others but I tell her I am not the doctor she thinks I am. I am holding back tears at this point, I shake my head, let go of her hand and leave. I know I was cruel to her but I was right, she deserved better than me, in every sense of the word.
Authors note: this was hard as I have covered some of this are from Ethan and Casey and trying not to repeat myself too much. Same with the next few chapters to an extent. For those who have read this far thank you

Serendipity - Part 4
Tumblr media
Written for @choicesflashfics - Week 34
Prompt 3  — “ I think I need to be drunk to understand this story ”
Book: TRR/OPH
Pairings: Drake Walker x Ava Matheson, Bryce Lahela x Charlie Hawkins
Word count: 1814
Rating: M
TW: Profanity, Suggestive language
A/N: This is a collaboration between @deb-1106 and @walkerismychoice using the weekly prompts provided by @choicesflashfics As always if you want on or off the tag list, just let me/us know. Deb usually posts to keep it consistent, but we were both kind of scrambling this week, so I’m getting this in under the wire for us. Charlie gasped. "Oh my God! Congratulations! She tilted Ava’s ring from side to side, watching the facets twinkle from the glow of the pendant lights.I'm so happy for you!" But was she? Well of course she was, but why, on some level did she feel a twinge of Jealousy.
"Yeah, Congrats! You're smart to be locking this one down already." Bryce directed his words at Drake and then winked at Ava. "How long have you two known each other again?
Drake glowered at Bryce momentarily but then lightened up. "You know, in absence of all the Whiskey we've had, I might take your comment as an insult, but you're right. I gotta make this thing legal before she realizes she's too good for me, heh."
"Oh stop!" Ava swatted Drake playfully. "You know that would never happen because it's not true." Turning back to Bryce and Charlie she said, "To answer your question, we've known each other about 6 months."
"Wow, 6 months…that's kind of fast," Charlie mused out loud before she could think to censor her thoughts.
Ava laughed. "If you asked me 6 months ago if I'd be anywhere near an engagement right now, I would have told you to get the fuck out of here."
"That's for sure," Drake interjected, and everyone laughed.
“Anyway,” Ava continued, “When you know, you know. There’s no need to wait for some arbitrary, socially acceptable length of time, right?”
“Cheers to that!” Bryce raised his glass towards the center of the table.
The others accepted the invitation and clinked their glasses, even Charlie who wasn’t feeling particularly celebratory. Cheers to that?! Did his agreement with the sentiment mean he wasn’t sure about his future with Charlie yet? Was Charlie just being dramatic? Just yesterday she had no doubts about the pace of her relationship with Bryce, so why did this suddenly feel like a competition she was losing? She felt tears start to prick the corners of her eyes.
“I’m going to use the restroom real quick,” Charlie excused herself without waiting for anyone’s reply. She locked herself in a stall and waited a few minutes until she felt more composed.
Just as Charlie exited the stall, Ava walked through the restroom door. “Hey, you were gone awhile. Is everything okay?”
Charlie, washing her hands, stared straight ahead and hoped Ava couldn’t tell she’d been crying.  “Yep, just finishing up.”
“Charlie, I know we haven’t known each other that long, but I could tell something was up back at the table. Do you want to talk about it?”
Charlie was mortified. “No, I’m so sorry. This was a big moment for you, and the last thing I wanted to do was make it about me. I’m really not that girl. I don’t know what came over me. Just give me a minute, and I’ll be back out.”
Ava took a towel from the dispenser and handed it to Charlie. “I’m not the type of friend who needs things to be all about me either, so spill it.”
Ava’s tone eased Charlie’s mood just enough to make her feel comfortable opening up. “I’m happy for you and Drake, I really am. It’s just that your engagement announcement suddenly made me doubt what Bryce and I have. We’ve been together two years and marriage hasn’t even come up.”
“Girl, I’ve seen the way Bryce looks at you. He’s not going anywhere. We aren’t all on the same timeline, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”
“I suppose that’s true.” The logical side of Charlie’s brain knew Ava’s was right, and she hoped the emotional side would soon follow. It was at least appeased enought to put this to rest for now.  She looked in the mirror and cringed. “I just need to fix my face, and then I’ll be out.”
Ava fished a makeup wipe from her purse. “Let me help.” She wiped the black streaks from Charlie’s face and then pulled out a small cosmetic bag. “Just a little eye liner and fresh mascara and you’ll be good to go.”
Once Ava finished, Charlie inspected her work. “Wow, can you do my make-up every day? I don’t even know how to properly apply eyeliner.”
Ava laughed. “Better yet, I’ll teach you. We’ll plan a spa night soon.”
Charlie hugged Ava. “Thank you. And again, I’m sorry.”
“No worries.” Ava pulled away with a smile. “Now let’s get back out there before the guys think we’re attempting a dine and dash.”
Despite a moment of awkward conversation when the woman got back to the table, the rest of dinner went off without a hitch. Charlie’s face hurt from laughing so much.
“Wait,” Drake furrowed his eyebrows, “So you work at the same hospital, but you met in a strip club?”
“It’s a long story,” Bryce began, “but basically I worked as a stripper to pay my way through med school. Charlie saw me and thought I was so hot, she asked for a private lap dance. My moves were incredible and she just had to have me. She asked me to be her plus one at her cousin’s wedding in Jamaica, and the rest is history.”
“Oh God, Bryce” Charlie rolled her eyes. “That’s not exactly what happened. My friends secretly bought me the lap dance, and I begrudgingly went. I was desperate not to show up to my cousin’s wedding alone and drunk enough to come up with a ridiculous plan, so we made a business deal for him to be my fake boyfriend. However, we failed at the fake part, and he turned into my real boyfriend.”
“Woah… I think I need to be drunk to understand this story.” Drake raised his glass in jest. “Waiter?!.. Brian?! I need a refill!”
Charlie kicked off her shoes and flopped on one end of the couch, while Bryce sat on the other. “I don’t know why I always torture myself with heels. Can you give me a foot rub?” She placed her feet in Bryce’s lap.
“Babe, I’m a surgeon, not a podiatrist.”
“Ha ha, very funny.” She flicked him lightly on the chin with her big toe.
“Ah! Fine, as long as you keep your feet out of my face.” Bryce took her right foot in his hands and started rubbing rhythmic circles with his thumbs on her sole.
“Mmmm,” Charlie hummed in relief. “You sure you don’t have a foot fetish?”
“Negative, but getting my hands on you anywhere is a good place to start.” Bryce had that gleam in his eyes that said he had a plan, and Charlie would be powerless to stop it - not that she would want to.
“Start what?” She played coy.
“Well…” He walked his fingers upward. “Your calves are probably a little tight too, so those clearly need to be massaged."
"Clearly." Charlie echoed.
"And then, since I'm already this far…" Bryce began to slide his hand under the skirt of her dress.
"Hold up." She slapped her hand on top of his. "Don't you think you're moving a little too fast? You haven't even done the other foot yet." She smugly placed his hand on her left foot. Of course she wanted him as much as he seemed to want her, but it was even more satisfying when she made him wait.
"Speaking of moving too fast," Bryce said as he kneaded the bottom of her foot, "I'm kind of surprised Drake and Ava got engaged after only knowing each other for six months."
"Oh really? Back at the restaurant it seemed you were all for it."
"Well, I don't know them well enough to really judge," Bryce backpedaled. "They do seem like one of those 'opposites attract' type couples that just works, so maybe it is like Ava said, 'When you know, you know.' I just couldn't imagine being ready to marry someone so soon."
Charlie sat upright, pulling her knees in toward her chest and hugging them tight as all the hurt and uncertainty she felt at the restaurant flooded back.  "Apparently so. We've been together two years and you're not even sure if you want to commit to me after all this time. I guess in my case you still don't know if I'm the one. Maybe that means I'm not."
"Charlie…" Bryce's near perma-smile transformed to a frown. "I never said that. Would I have moved in with you if I had any doubts?"
"I don’t know, Bryce. Maybe you just want to test everything out before you commit because you aren't sure. If you don't know by now, when will you know? Five years? Ten?"
"Babe, he inched closer and placed a hand on her knee, "where is all this coming from? Okay, wrong question since I'm pretty sure where, but not exactly why. I don't think you've ever brought up marriage before."
"I guess seeing Drake and Ava just made me think, what are we waiting for? Yes six months is pretty quick, but lots of people get engaged after a year and we're at double that. We live together, we're both becoming established in our careers, we love each other…Making it official just makes sense."
Bryce looked her in the eyes intently. "I love you, and as far as I can see, my future includes you. I don't need a piece of paper to prove that."
"Does that mean you'll never want to get married?" Charlie was still reeling.
"I'm not saying that, but you know how things turned out with my parents. I just… I'm afraid of repeating the same mistakes. That may sound like a cop out, but I just need time, and I'll know…we'll know when it's right. Things are going so well right now, why rush to change that?"
Bryce had a point, and Charlie recognized her perception of the situation was colored by her past as much as Bryce’s was by his. The way her ex Andrew left her just as they were planning a future together made her a little more anxious to make things official this time. But would rushing to marry Andrew have really changed anything? He'd probably still have left her for another woman, and then they'd have a messy divorce to contend with. She had to remind herself that Bryce was nothing like Andrew. Even without a formal commitment, her relationship with him was progressing at a perfect pace.
"You're right." Charlie inched closer to Bryce and laid her head on his shoulder. "I'm sorry for getting all in my head again. You know how I can spiral sometimes."
"And that's why I'm here to keep reminding you what a wonderful, loveable, and strong woman you are. But in case you need more than words to convince you," Bryce hopped off the couch and then pulled her up with him, "follow me to the bedroom and I’ll show you too."

Happy Birthday, Olivia!
[Bryce Lahela x Olivia Hadley Masterlist]
Pairing: Bryce Lahela x Olivia Hadley (F!OC) Book: Open Heart Word Count: ~950 Rating/Warning: General; all the pure fluff with these two
Synopsis: Bryce has a special surprise for Olivia to celebrate her birthday (March 9).
This precious birthday art is by the amazing and talented ArtbyAinna!
Tumblr media
Colorful decorations hung on the walls of the pediatric lounge. A large Happy Birthday sign covered the window. Multicolored balloons bobbed around the room, bright and cheerful cards dangling from the ends of their long, shiny gold ribbon. The room hummed with hushed excitement as little faces hid behind whatever they could find to be out of sight of the doorway.
"I'll be right back!"
🎈 💝 🎈💝 🎈💝 🎈
Bryce wrapped his arms around Olivia as he found her filling out charts at the nurses' station. "Got a minute?"
She shook her head lightly. "Really? Right now?"
"I'll make it quick!" He whispered into her ear, his breath tickling her sensitive skin. He pressed his lips to her neck, leaving a lingering kiss.
She shivered beneath his touch, her head clouding, thoughts of the file in front of her fading. Her face flushed, matching her copper hair. "Okay."
He grabbed her hand, pulling her forward before she could change her mind.
"Bryce," she giggled in reply as he practically dragged them at a sprint pace. "What's gotten into you?"
"You said quick." He shrugged with a wink in her direction, pressing onward.
Olivia's focus shifted back behind her as they passed by the supply closet they were familiar with (for reasons) without ever slowing. "Where are we going?"
"You'll see." His words dripped with mystery, his smile covering his entire place.
They turned the corner heading to the end of the pediatric floor that overlooked the front of the hospital.
"Bryce will you tell me what's going on," she demanded as he guided her forward.
"Here we are!" Bryce made a quick turn into the pediatric wing's lounge.
Her confusion faded to wonder. "What is all this?" She marveled, her bright eyes glistening, her hand still in Bryce's as he turned back toward her.
A loud chorus of "Surprise" and "Happy Birthday" sang around her cutting off Bryce's reply as children with smiling faces popped out and others rushed into the room.
Olivia didn't know where to turn first. The once quiet scene quickly erupted into pleas for her to read the cards, each child hoping theirs would be the first. They ushered her forward, leaving Bryce to watch as the children doted over her, helping her to the couch and placing a paper crown on her head. Hugs and laughter filled the space as Olivia's heart swelled with adoration and appreciation from all the special attention.
As the wave of children began to thin, a soft tug pulled at the end of her sleeve. Olivia looked down, finding one of her young patients, curling her finger back toward herself, requesting Olivia to move closer.
"Happy Birthday," she cheered, throwing her arms around Olivia's neck.
"Thank you, Maddy." She hugged the girl back.
"Can I tell you a secret," she whispered.
"Of course, you can." Olivia turned her head to the side.
Maddy whispered in her ear, "I think Dr. Bryce like likes you. Not regular like, but the really like likes!"
"You think so?" She feigned shock.
Maddy nodded fervently. "He's looking at you right now!"
Olivia glanced up, trying to temper her growing smile as she met Bryce's warm, adoring gaze.
"Don't look!" Maddy quickly warned, throwing her little hands in front of Olivia's face. "But did you see his smile?"
"I did!"
"He smiled A LOT when he was telling us about the party. He helped us with our cards, too."
Olivia couldn't help but steal another glance at Bryce, who was helping a little boy with his juice box.
"Dr. Olivia?"
"Yes, Maddy?"
"Do you like like Dr. Bryce back?" Her green eyes shimmered with promise.
"Can I tell you a secret?"
"Yes! I'm real good at secrets. I never told anyone that my daddy took me for ice cream before dinner, twice! So, I'm a good secret keeper."
Olivia chuckled at the girl's innocence; she leaned closer. "I do like like Dr. Bryce."
"Eeee!" The little girl bounced up and down in place effortlessly as if propelled by an invisible trampoline. "I knew it! I knew it! I knew it!"
"Shh," Olivia attempted (and failed) to quiet her. "It's our secret, remember!"
"Oh yeah! Well, do you think you and Dr. Bryce will hold hands now? That's what people who like like each other do!" She nodded in agreement with her own words, her feet still bouncing as she danced in place. "Do you think—"
"Why don't we let Dr. Olivia get back to her party?" Maddy's mom swooped in to save Olivia from any more questions from her inquisitive daughter. "Sorry!"
"She's sweet. You know I love our Maddy girl!"
"Bye," Maddy waved before pointing to Bryce. "Go now!"
Olivia giggled, making her way to Bryce.
"What was that about?" His brow rose in question.
"A certain curious little girl seems to think that you might—" Olivia tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and batted her lashes shyly. "Well, she thought you might like like me and that maybe if you did, we should hold hands. What do you think about that?"
He laced his hand with hers, his thumb brushing over her knuckles in reply.
"So it's true?" She challenged with wide eyes, nudging him playfully with her shoulder.
"It is. I do like like you, Dr. Olivia."
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Maddy bouncing again and tugging on her mom's arm while pointing at the two of them. Olivia smiled, brushing a kiss on Bryce's cheek. "I like like you, too, Dr. Bryce."
A mix of cheers and ooo's surrounded them. Some patients covered their eyes and pulled their faces.
"Thank you for everything."
Tumblr media
A/N: Today is Olivia's birthday so I wanted to write something special for her. I hope you enjoy this silly little story with my two favorite rays of sunshine. I know it's not perfectly polished but if I wanted to post on her birthday, I needed to finish up, so here we are.
Thank you for the support and for making it this far. I am truly grateful to each and every one of you. Thank you for supporting my sunshine OTP.

Tumblr media
Meera stood near the nurse's station, not so secretly watching her fiancé talk to an overly friendly woman. She forcefully tore her eyes away or she might just blow up from jealousy.
“Damn Bose, if you wanna stalk someone atleast don’t make it that obvious,” Jackie handed over her tablet and stood beside her.
“Ooh! Stalking? Sounds fun! Who is the target though?” Sienna followed shortly, smiling at the nurse at the station and picking up a patient report.
“It's nothing guys,” Meera sneakily looked up at Ethan and the mystery woman, but it was enough to draw the attention of the two other doctors.
“Yikes!” Sienna remarked, as the woman in question laughed at something Ethan had said, playfully hitting his arm.
“Jeez, go easy on the PDA, the man has a ring on him,” Jackie followed.
“I know!” Meera sighed.
"But who is she?" Sienna asked, quickly stealing a glance.
"That question has been burning in my mind since morning!" Meera replied. "Who is she and why the hell is she flirting with my fiancé?"
"Should I reverse image search her?" Jackie suggested, "because it looks like the identity of this mystery woman is eating your soul."
"Who, she?" a third voice made Meera look up, she was greeted with Tobias' smug face. "That's Dr. Emily Chester," he informed.
"Who?" the girls said, collectively.
"Professionally or personally?" Tobias asked, but Meera's glare didn't make him wait for an answer.
"Both. Got it. Professionally, she is one of the biggest names in endocrinology. Personally?" Tobias deliberately stopped enjoying Meera's agony a little too much. "She was at Hopkins, a couple years junior to us, and she had a huge thing for Ethan."
“And?” Meera pressed for more information. “What about Ethan?”
“In true Ethan manner, he didn’t reciprocate her feelings, too heartbroken over she-who-shall-not-be-named and walls too high and thick to let anyone else in.”
“But what is she doing here?”
“I hit up Kyra, apparently, she will be joining as an attending, as Dr. Stanley is stepping back to go into research after receiving a grant from NIH,” Sienna informed. “She was supposed to join from Monday but decided to come in today to settle in before starting work, Ethan is showing her around.”
“Nice! She hasn’t changed at all,” Tobias smirked and was immediately met with three angry glares, “I… I think I’m being paged… be right back,” Tobias exited.
“The settling in excuse is utter bullshit!” Meera said.
“Agreed! She just wants to get into his pants,” Jackie stated.
“Jackie! Don’t say stuff like that!” Sienna reprimanded.
“What? It’s the truth!”
“Don’t listen to her! Kyra texted she can cut their tour short and get Ethan back in the office under the ruse of a meeting,” Sienna showed Meera her phone. “What do you say?”
“I don’t know Si, it seems a little far fetched, and besides I trust Ethan,” Meera looks at him once again, enthusiastically speaking about the latest testing technology, completely oblivious to the flirtatious looks he receives from his audience.
“You are a better person than I am,” Sienna squeezed her hand.
The familiar sound of a pager made Meera look down, “I gotta go, my intern’s paging 911.”
Tumblr media
The remaining two doctors get to work, and shortly after Ethan walks up to them, Emily Chester following him like a puppy.
“Good morning Dr. Varma, Dr. Trinh,” he greeted.
As Jackie fixed him with a stone cold glare Sienna put on a fake smile and greeted him back.
“I was meaning to introduce you to Dr. Emily Chester, the newest addition to our Edenbrook family. Dr. Chester, this is Dr. Varma one of our finest young attendings and Dr. Trinh who is already board certified in internal medicine and is now pursuing a fellowship in pediatrics,” as Ethan made introductions, pointing to each of them, both Sienna and Jackie noticed something unusual. They looked at each other making sure that they weren't imagining things.
“I thought I saw Meera here?” Ethan asked.
“She is busy, you know saving lives, managing a team being freaking awesome,” Sienna blurted out.
“What she means to say is Meera has a consult,” Jackie tries to avert, “and so do we. So if you’ll excuse us.”
With a small smile and a curt nod the two of them disappear around the corner. Ethan stares at their retreating figures, confused about what just happened and amused at the very weird conversation he had.
Tumblr media
“Did you see it? Please tell me I’m wrong,” Sienna said.
“Nope. You are correct, it's missing,” Jackie replied.
“We need to find Meera ASAP.”
The two of them didn’t have to wander the halls of Edenbrook much longer as Meera’s angry Ramsey-like voice blared through the hospital floor.
“The incompetence is unacceptable! You work with literal life and death, so you can’t afford to make mistakes,” Meera shouted at an intern who seemed like she was about to cry.
“I’m… I am… sorry Dr. Bose,” she mumbled timidly.
“Sorry? What am I supposed to do with your sorry? Apologize to that man’s wife and kids…” “Okay, that's enough,” Sienna stopped Meera before she could continue with her rage fest.
“I think Dr. …,” Jackie glanced at the intern’s ID badge, “Baker has learned her lesson, and we can continue with our day.” With that she dispels the crowd that had formed.
“That was very unlike you,” Sienna said, worried.
“And very like Ramsey,” Jackie added.
“I don’t know guys, Emily Chester just doesn't feel right to me, and I might be taking it out on the wrong people,” Meera sighed.
“Yeah about that…” Jackie shared a look with Sienna, “we found out something.”
“Ethan doesn't have his engagement ring on him.”
“Wait a second. Pause and rewind … what did you just say?”
Jackie and Sienna quickly update Meera about all the incidents and their findings.
“But why?” Meera asks, hopeless.
“Told you men are no good,” Jackie says and quickly receives a nudge from Sienna.
“Look we don’t know, but I believe there is an explanation,” Sienna consoles her fellow dolphin.
“I… I can help,” the intern from before said shyly.
“Not now Baker!”
“I mean I… might know why Dr. Ramsey didn’t have his ring on.”
The three older doctors stare at her.
“Sorry, I couldn’t help but overhear.”
“Spill. Now,” Meera said.
“Okay,” the intern takes a deep breath before steading herself, “I had to call a code blue on the third floor today, and I panicked. There weren’t any attendings or senior residents nearby, so Dr. Ramsey came in. I saw him removing his ring before slipping on gloves and taking over CPR.”
Meera visibly relaxed, as if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders.
“See! I told you there was an explanation,” Sienna chimed joyfully.
“But why hasn’t he put it back on?” Jackie retorted.
“He might have just forgotten. He is the chief, cut him some slack, Jackie.”
“It might be a mistake,” Meera said thoughtfully, “but he needs to learn a lesson. Baker, did you see where he put the ring after removing it?”
“In his pocket!” Dr. Baker replies without wasting a second.
“Good! Get me your intern friends, I have a plan,” Meera smiled mischievously, the wheels of her brain already turning.
Tumblr media
Later that day Meera crossed the atrium, she looked at her watch, according to the intel she had collected from Kyra Ethan was supposed to be here any minute. Five minutes later she spotted him descending the stairs, undoubtedly followed by none other than Dr. Emily Chester. They make eye contact and Ethan smiles at her, taking long strides to reach her. Meera looks over to Baker from the corner of her eye, who was hiding in plain sight. It was time to set her plan in motion.
“Hey! I have been trying to catch you all day, where have you been?” Ethan said, holding Meera’s hand.
“Hi, I know, it’s just been one of those days,” Meera replied, smiling.
“Anyways, I wanted to introduce you to Dr. Emily Chester, world renowned endocrinologist and a fantastic diagnostician as well.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you!”
“Likewise, Dr.?” Emily looked at Ethan to complete introductions.
“Dr. Bose. Our best diagnostician, head of the DT, my favorite mentee, and my fia…”
Right on Meera’s signal, a horde of interns led by Baker swarm Dr. Chester.
“OH MY GOD! Aren’t you Emily Chester?!” one said.
“You are literally my medical hero,” another one added.
“I am so fascinated by your latest paper,” a third joined.
As the crowd separated Dr. Chester from the couple Meera takes advantage of the chaos and stealthily picks up the ring from Ethan’s pocket.
“What is wrong with them?” As Ethan is about to reprimand the interns, Meera brings his attention back to her.
“Babe don’t you think you are missing something?”
Ethan’s brows furrow, he thinks about all the important birthdays and anniversaries, date nights and meetings, when unable to come to a conclusion he follows Meera’s gaze to his fingers and notices the missing ring.
“Christ!” he curses under his breath. “Listen rookie, trust me this was an honest mistake…” he searches for the ring in all his pockets.
“Looking for this?” Meera holds up the ring in front of him.
“Look, Meera I am deeply sorry, I meant to put it back on after running a code and one thing happened after another and it slipped my mind. I am extremely sorry, it won’t happen again.”
“I know babe,” Meera smiled. “But I’m not about to hand it over to you that easily.”
“Don’t do something stupid rookie,” Ethan pinched the bridge of his nose very familiar with the mischievous gleam in his fiancée’s eyes.
Meera went down on one knee, holding the ring in hand. The entire hospital had been gushing about Meera’s reverse proposal to Ethan by the dreamy Lake Louise a couple months back, so when given the chance to witness it in person and with the power of the Edenbrook rumor mill, quite a crowd had gathered around, clicking pictures, cheering and hooting.
Ethan shaked his head, a smile lining the corner of his mouth.
Meera looked at Emily, enjoying the look of pure disbelief and surprise on her face.
“Dr. Ethan Jonah Ramsey, will you let me be a colossal pain in your ass for this lifetime?”
Ethan joined Meera on the ground, “a hundred times over.”
They kiss with the Edenbrook crowd going feral. Everyone comes up to them to congratulate the happy couple.
As the crowd thins out Dr. Chester speaks, “well I guess congratulations are in order, “ she smiles politely. “But I’ll have to say, I had never imagined Dr. Ethan Ramsey would tie the knot.”
“I agree with you Chester, I had never imagined myself as well, but what can I say she brings out the best in me,” Ethan replied grinning ear to ear at Meera.
“So when's the wedding?”
“In a month,” Meera informs.
“In a month!” Emily shouts, surprised, “don’t you think it’s too soon?” She looks at Ethan, convinced that he has been wrongfully roped into a marriage.
The couple chuckle, a knowing look between the two, “we have been engaged a long time now,” Ethan said.
“This is the third proposal between the two of us. I just meant to include our Edenbrook family and that also means you, now that you are supposed to join us as well,” Meera fixes Emily with the most innocent smile and earnest look.
Dr. Chester matches her smile, “well, then I won’t keep you two from your celebrations. I’ll sign the papers on Monday, Eth…,” she stops, quickly rectifying herself, “I mean Dr. Ramsey.”
As Dr. Emily Chester moves away, their friends surround them.
“That was one hell of a way to prove a point,” Sienna declared.
“Yes you might have just peed all over him to mark your territory,” Jackie joked.
“Great idea!” Meera exclaimed. “Let’s save that for when he misplaces the wedding ring!”
As the entire group breaks into laughter, Tobias says, “you are in for a rollercoaster ride, my man!”
“I know, but she is so worth it,” Ethan says, kissing Meera, deeply.

Stunning (Ethan x MC)
Tumblr media
Book: Open Heart Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x Dr. Marchia Bisognin (F!MC) Premise: The dazzling couple spent their night at the Opera House.  Rating / Category: Mature / Semi-NSFW; Fluff Warning(s): Suggestive adult theme, strong language Word Count: 236 words Artist: @/artbyainna on Instagram
“You look stunning.”
A thrill ran up her spine. Marchia had heard him whisper those exact words a million times, yet somehow, her heart leaped into the sky—just like the first time he uttered them for her. His arms ardently came around the warmth of her waist, pining her tightly against the wall.
Precisely where he wanted her to be.
“Maybe it’s time for you to wear some glasses, sayang,” she teased, her fingers hooked on his grey tie, pulling him closer.
“Or maybe it’s time for me to rip off that dress.”
His head leaned down, pressing a hot trail of kisses up her neck, biting on her delicate skin softly. In mere seconds, he finally reached her jaws—uncontrollably consumed by the sensation of her exposed skin. Feeling utterly greedy, he turned to meet her lips, but was greeted with some resistance from her finger.
“Ah-ah-ah,” she playfully chastised. “Not so fast, Doctor Ramsey. The show’s about to start.”
He slightly lifted a brow, countering the young blonde with his own taunting smile. Dark, hooded eyes gazed right into hers, harboring a quiet yet passionate intensity. She knew exactly what he was planning—entirely too filthy to be declared to the public.
Ethan could not quite temper the grin that spread across his striking face as he murmured,  “Then we’ll continue our show when we get home.”

Tumblr media
October 15, 2022
He’s never been more proud of her, watching as she maneuvers around the ballroom talking with fellow doctors and a few pharmaceutical reps. It isn't their first medical conference together, but it is the first where she is the speaker and not Ethan himself.
She’d done a panel earlier that day, with the rest of the diagnostics team, discussing their most difficult and rare cases. And his wife had been a shining star, answering every question with ease and never once showing how nervous she had been. Ethan had a feeling that, given a few more years, Genevieve would be the keynote speaker, by herself, at another conference.
While Ethan was not a speaker at this conference, like Gen and his former team, he had been honored earlier that evening for his work in the amazon three years prior.
That felt like a lifetime ago, his idiotic decision to run away from his feelings and hide behind helping an epidemic. He was so determined then, to get Gen out of his head – and his heart – and he had failed brilliantly.
He spent every night of those two months thinking of her, looking at the only photo he had of her at the time. Yearning. And now, here he was happily married and planning the rest of his life with her.
Ethan takes a sip of his scotch, eyes still on his wife across the room. A vision in black, her blonde hair pinned up in a bun, exposing her neck and shoulders. She was absolutely stunning and Ethan was acutely aware of how lucky he was.
Because she wasn’t just the most gorgeous creature he’d ever seen, but also incredibly smart, and could make him laugh like no one else ever had before. Her compassion and patience unparalleled. She, his Genevieve, was perfect.
He’s looking forward to the minute they can extract themselves from the gala. Where he can take her upstairs to their room and worship every beautiful inch of her. Especially because today was Gen’s thirtieth birthday and his birthday enthusiast of a wife had spent all of it working. Without complaint.
So now, that the day was coming to an end and their commitments complete, all Ethan wanted to do now was spend the last few hours spoiling her in whatever way he could.
“Dr. Ramsey.” A man calls out to him, making Ethan take his gaze off his wife.
“Andrew, it’s nice to see you.” He extends his hand in greeting, smiling. “It’s been quite awhile.”
“It has,” Andrew returns his smile, “You know it was me who recommended you get that award tonight. Long overdue if you ask me.”
“Should I be thanking you, then?”
“Only if you think you should.” He laughs, an over exaggerated one that draws more attention than Ethan would like.
Though, that was who Dr. Andrew Fitzgerald was. An over the top personality that could be too much for even the most social of people.
Ethan had met the fellow doctor while in the amazon, and although he wasn’t the type Ethan usually drifted towards, he was a great doctor and friend.
“Where’s the wife?” Andrew looks around, eager to catch a glimpse of Genevieve.
It was almost amusing to him, how many people at the conference were shocked and amazed to learn that the perpetual loner, Ethan Ramsey, had gotten married.
“She’s around here somewhere. She’s much better at mingling than I am.”
“Everyone is, my friend.” He laughs once again, patting Ethan playfully on the shoulder. “Please tell me it’s the same woman that you told me about while we were in Brazil.”
“It is.” A subtle smile graces Ethan’s face, feeling almost proud of himself for never letting Gen go.
“Good, be a shame otherwise.” Andrew takes a sip of his drink, scanning the room one more time. “Actually, I came over here because I have a proposition for you.”
“I’m happy where I am, Andrew. No matter how many times you ask me to leave Edenbrook, my answer won’t change. Especially now that I’m married, my wife and I are settled in Boston.”
“No, no, not that. I’ve accepted I’ll never get out to move out west. Actually it’s a mission of sorts.”
“A mission?”
“I’ve been working with The W.H.O again, to put a team together. We’ll travel to hospitals in need around the rainforest and help them improve how they run. We have a head of each department from the world’s best hospitals, the problem is that we had a doctor from Toronto in our C.O.M spot, but he can’t make the two month trip now. So, I’m here to offer the spot to you. Since you’re Edenbrook’s Chief of Medicine now.”
“That’s… an interesting offer, Fitz.”
“I thought it might intrigue you. We leave on the thirty-first. I know that’s not a lot of time to get things in order, but I figured I could count on you regardless. You in, Ramsey? Like I said it’s two months, we come back to the states in January, the sixth to be exact.”
“I…”
Three years ago, Ethan would have agreed on the spot. He did, in fact. The second he was offered the position to help he took it. But now… now he has a wife, a woman who means more to him than anything else in the world, and he can’t say yes without discussing it with her first. He’s abandoned her without a word once before and he’ll never make that mistake again.
“I want to say I’m in, but I need to speak with Genevieve first.”
“Understandable. I’ll give you the night to talk it over with her.” Andrew pats Ethan on the shoulder, “Find me at the farewell brunch tomorrow and give me your answer.”
He walks away with a smile, leaving Ethan alone with the offer hanging heavy in the air. His plans for the evening now ruined. There’s no doubt his wife will be devastated by the knowledge of him leaving for two months, and that despite that she’ll tell him to go.
Not that he’s even sure he wants to go. It sounds like an amazing opportunity, helping people that he knows are in desperate need, but can he handle being away from Gen for ten weeks?
It would be the longest they’ve been apart since they officially got together. Since the attack if he’s being honest, and while Ethan was never dependent on anyone, he and Gen had formed a bond unlike anything he’s had before. Just the thought of being away from her for so long makes his chest ache.
“Hey, you.” Gen’s melodic voice breaks him out of his thoughts. Appearing before him like an angel, her smile so sweet it kills a part of him.
The part that knows he’s about to break her heart.
“Hi.” Ethan tries his best to hide his troubled mind, but he fails.
“You okay?” She reads him like a book, brows furrowed with concern as her fingers reach up to his face, tracing his jaw.
“Actually, let’s step out onto the terrace for a moment.”
“Okay.”
Without another word, Ethan takes her hand, leading her through the throng. He takes off his jacket, delicately draping it over her petite frame as they make it outside.
“What’s going on?” She looks up at him, worry still etched all over her perfect face.
This wasn’t how the night was supposed to go, especially given the importance of the day. But he can’t have this secret hanging over him, not when Andrew needs his answer come morning and he refuses to make a decision without Genevieve.
It wasn’t fair to her, and that wasn’t the type of marriage they had.
“I need to preface this by saying I don’t want you to be upset.” Ethan guides her to sit on one of the outdoor couches, settling in beside her. Reaching for her hand the second he’s seated.
“Okay, that makes me nervous.”
“It’s nothing bad, G, it’s…” He takes a deep breath, looking down at the joined hands.
Hers is so much than his own, everything about her is tiny. Except her heart, and her feelings. Those two things are larger than the world itself, and while he loves that about her… it makes moments like this all the more difficult.
After another beat of silence, Ethan finally looks back at her face and opens the gate. Telling her everything Andrew had told him, watching as every word brings more sadness to her eyes.
Despite her best efforts to hide it from him.
“What are your thoughts?” He keeps his voice low, gentle.
“You have to do it.”
“Are you sure? It’s ten weeks away, G. That’s the longest we’ve been apart in almost three years.” He takes her other hand, thumb running across her wedding rings as he feels her squeeze tightly.
“Honestly? No, but – but this is an incredible opportunity and I know how much you loved your work there before. So, as much as I hate the thought of being without you for that long, it’s not something you should pass up. I think you’ll regret it if you did.” Gen tries her best to smile, though her eyes well with tears.
“I’ll miss the holidays, Sienna’s wedding, the anniversary of the… I don’t know if I can do that to you.”
“Ethan,” She lets go of his hands, reaching up to hold his face. “We have our whole lives for those things – aside form Si’s wedding but, still.”
“I know that, I do…” He mimics her gesture, chuckling softly. “Three years ago I wouldn’t have even considered those a reason to say no, and now… you’ve changed me, Rookie.”
“Oh, I know. You’re a big softie now.” Gen smiles, as a few stray tears travel down her face, leaning to press her forehead against his. “Tell Andrew you’ll join him.”
“Alright.”
They stay pressed together for a few moments, seeking a silent comfort that they only have together.
“I feel like I’ve put a damper on the evening now,” Ethan is the first to pull away, swiping her tears away with his knuckle.
“It’s fine.”
“It’s not.” He stands from the couch, offering her his hand.
She smiles at him, taking it without hesitation and letting him wrap his arms securely around her. “I’m gonna miss you.”
Her voice quivers, her eyes once again full of sorrow. This was already the hardest thing he’s ever done and he hasn’t even left her side yet.
“Not nearly as much as I’ll miss you, G.” Ethan leans down, kissing her softly. “Let’s forget about that for the rest of the night. Let me take you upstairs, and make love to my wife on her birthday.”
“I’d like that.”
He knows they both push the decision out of their minds as they leave the ballroom and make it to the elevators. As they go up to their floor and down the hall to their hotel room.
They have sixteen days to deal with it and prepare for their separation, but tonight nothing else mattered but each other. And reminding themselves about the love that would get them through it.

The Unexpected Valentine
Premise: The interns celebrate their first Valentine’s Day in Boston, and it’s full of surprises.

Tumblr media
The nurses’ stations on almost every floor were festooned in pink and white paper hearts. Some diehard romantics wore red heart pins on their scrubs, while others smiled more than usual, humming jaunty tunes as they did their work.
Valentine’s Day wasn’t until the end of the week, but that didn’t stop people from getting into the spirit early. Nurse Sarah was responsible for this year’s resident Secret Valentine Exchange and was determined to make it the best one yet.
All she needed was to track down one stubborn intern that had managed to avoid detection. But Sarah was on a mission, and nothing and no one would get in her way.
Cassie Valentine wasn’t thinking of anything but her latest patient. She was working with a new attending, one who seemed to disappear whenever she needed guidance. She was a February intern and could fly solo easily for less complicated cases. This case was anything but usual.
She missed working with Dr. Ramsey, even if the man was more likely to ask questions than provide answers. But at least his questions pushed her to think out of the box. Not go round and round in circles.
Lost in thought, she didn’t notice someone chasing her or calling her name until a hand fell on her shoulder. Startled, she turned her head to see Nurse Sarah breathing heavily and clutching her waist as if she had a stitch on the side.
“Wow, you’re a really fast walker,” Sarah huffed. “I chased you down two hallways, and you’re not even winded.”
Cassie knew she’d been practically running, as she often did when thinking, and felt sorry for the other woman.
“I’m sorry, Sarah. I was lost in thought,” Cassie said sincerely. “How can I help?”
Sarah held out a post-it note and pen. “You haven’t entered your name in the Secret Valentine Exchange. Today is the last day. We’ll pick names at the end of shift.”
“Yeah, I don’t do V-Day,” Cassie said, not even bothering to hide her disdain for the holiday, which wasn’t really a holiday but a marketing gimmick.
“But your last name is Valentine,” Sarah sputtered.
Cassie just knew this would come up. She loved romance, but all her life, she had to contend with people making fun as soon as February started because of the peculiarity of her last name.
She lifted her chin mulishly. “Your point is…?”
“It’s practically your day,” Sarah said in a tone that implied it should be obvious. And then she waved her hand dismissively. “Anyway, everyone else is signed up, and the numbers will be uneven if you don’t. So, it’s required.”
Cassie wanted to argue and stick to her principles, but Sarah’s determined expression told her there was no point. That didn’t mean she would take it lying down. She took the post-it and pen, scribbled a name, and handed Sarah the folded paper.
Smugly satisfied, Sarah thanked her and returned to her station.
“What was that about?”
Thinking she was alone, Cassie practically jumped at the masculine voice behind her. She glanced over her shoulder to see Ethan standing in the patient room doorway.
Her heart skipped a beat as it often did in his presence, and her green eyes filled with longing before she schooled her features into a neutral expression.
“Stupid Valentine’s Day,” she muttered under her breath.
He must have had bat ears because he heard her clearly. The quick, amused grin that flashed across his face was disarming, as was the warmth in his blue eyes. Despite her best intentions to keep things professional, she was charmed and wished he would smile more.
“Not a fan?” he drawled, leaning against the wall and folding his arms across his chest. “I have to say, I’m surprised.”
“Join the club.” She rolled her eyes.
The shrill sound of a pager—his—cut the moment short. She thought he looked grim as he read the message and wondered if it was about Naveen.
Before she could ask him about it, he dropped the pager in his coat pocket, gave her a brief nod, and walked away without another word.
A few days later, Cassie walked into Edenbrook for her shift with Sienna bubbling in excitement beside her, a baker’s box full of heart-shaped cookies clutched in her hands. Her friend had been like this for several days, eager for Valentine’s Day and a romantic dinner with her idiot of a boyfriend.
Of course, Sienna didn’t think Wayne was an idiot despite evidence to the contrary. It took all of Cassie’s self-control not to shake her and make her see Wayne for the supercilious loser he was. But that’s not what friends did.
If Sienna was happy with Wayne, Cassie had no right to interfere or make her feel bad about it. Not like Jackie often did, which inevitably led to Sienna retreating to her room on the pretense of studying.
She would be supportive and pleasant, even if it killed her. Besides, Wayne would show his true colors eventually. Cassie had met enough people like that to know it was only a matter of time.
“He still hasn’t told me where we’re going,” Sienna said as they swiped in and walked into the near-empty locker room. “But I dropped enough hints about this French bistro I want to try. So, fingers crossed!”
Cassie flushed when she realized Sienna was looking expectantly at her, and she hadn’t heard a word Sienna said until now. “I’m sure it will be lovely.”
Wanting to make amends for her inattentiveness, she gave Sienna a one-armed hug. “I’ll make sure you get out of here on time. Tell you what. If you want to leave early to get ready, just page me, and I’ll cover your patients.”
“Thanks, Cassie,” Sienna said, smiling widely. “I might take you up on that.”
They both turned away to change into scrubs. Cassie unfastened her bag and saw the square-shaped red jewelry box for the Secret Valentine Exchange. She’d been ecstatic to get Sienna’s name in the draw and had known exactly what to buy her bestie.
Now it was just a matter of getting Sienna out of the way so she could hide it in her locker for later.
“I’m going to find Danny and Raf before shift starts, give them their cookies,” Sienna told her, slamming the locker door shut. “See you at morning sign-out?”
“You bet.”
Cassie waited for a beat in case Sienna came back. Judging the coast to be clear, she took out the jewelry box, tucked a Secret Valentine note into the seam, and placed it on the shelf next to Sienna’s tote so she wouldn’t miss it.
“I thought I got Sienna in the Secret Valentine Exchange,” a male voice said behind her.
Caught unawares for the second time in so many days, Cassie jumped and spun on her heels to face Bryce. He was leaning against one of the lockers, a small bouquet of pink roses in his hands, brows furrowed in confusion.
Before Cassie could respond, Jackie walked into view with Elijah following, each holding a present.
“What’s up, meathead?” Jackie asked, brushing past Bryce to set the gift bag on the bench.
She cocked her head when she saw Cassie standing in front of Sienna’s open locker and the red jewelry box.
“Wait a minute,” she started, looking first at Cassie, then Bryce and the flowers he was holding. “Are those Sienna’s Secret Valentine presents? Because I got her name in the draw.”
“That’s interesting,” Elijah said, joining the three of them in front of Sienna’s locker. “I got her name too.”
The four friends stared at each other perplexed, and then Cassie burst into laughter as she put two and two together.
“You all know I don’t believe in V-Day,” she said, swallowing back giggles. “So when Nurse Sarah cornered me, I put Sienna’s name in the draw instead of mine.”
Bryce chuckled. “I did the same but for different reasons. Sienna really gets into all the holiday stuff. I didn’t want to take the chance she’d get a dud.”
Cassie threw Jackie a challenging look. “How much of a coincidence is it you entered Sienna’s name too?”
Jackie rolled her eyes, but her grin gave her away. “I felt bad riding her about Wayne last week. Figured if she got two presents, it might make up for him canceling on her tonight.”
She twisted her lips in derision. “Let’s face it. The jerk has a track record of canceling on her at the last minute. At least now she can drown her sorrows in Belgian chocolate.” She lightly shook the bag.
Elijah slowly raised his hand. “So, I might have entered Sienna’s name too. She does so much to cheer everyone up. Like Bryce, I didn’t want to chance it she’d get dissed by someone with crappy tastes. By the way, I asked Landry to write her name too. I calculated the odds based on the number of entries and figured one of us had a strong shot of drawing her name.”
Elijah finished confessing and lifted the gift bag off his lap. “I got her candy hearts and a funny card.”
Bryce whistled softly. “Sienna definitely hit the Valentine’s Day jackpot today.”
And then they all laughed as they gathered around her locker, trying to stuff their presents inside. Their friend was about to get the surprise of her life.
They were arguing about how to organize everything when Sienna rushed into the locker room, muttering under her breath.
She stopped abruptly at seeing her friends assembled around her open locker. Her eyes widened in surprise at the gift bags and flowers, their distinct floral scent filling the air.
Before she could ask what was going on, Cassie, Bryce, Elijah and Jackie descended upon her and dumped their presents in her hands.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, Si!”
It was the end of shift, and the hospital was buzzing as it often did during the changeover. Nurse Sarah rubbed the back of her neck and rolled her shoulders to get the kinks out. She absently wondered what the residents had gotten each other for the Secret Valentine Exchange.
She’d meant to follow up, but her day had been busier than usual. Now she was tired and looking forward to celebratory drinks with her friends. It was too bad she didn’t have a man this Valentine’s Day to shower her with presents.
She was almost at the exit when she spied Dr. Trinh walking ahead, laughing with her usual group of friends. Sarah took in the brightly wrapped presents and bouquet of roses in the young doctor’s arms and thought, Lucky Lady.

I feel like Tatum would have the best comeback for asshole partners asking for 'the husband stitch'
Oh, anon... the evil laugh I just did when I read this! You know she probably has a book of comebacks. This might not be her absolute best, but I hope this one will give you a smile. Thank you so, so much for the inspiration! 💜
Tumblr media
Summary: Tatum is called into Ethan's office to discuss her colorful interaction with a patient's husband.
Word count: ~1120
Warning: Mature audience; language; medical discussion
A/N: Some characters and plot points belong to our friends at Pixelberry; this is not beta'd, so please excuse my errors.
~🖤~
A deafening silence plagues Ethan’s glass-enclosed office. Anxiously tapping his fingers on his wooden desk, the chief of medicine glares first at his watch before staring at the door.  Growing impatient for his next meeting, he rests his elbow on his chair, his fingertips massaging his closed eyes.
Where is she?
The door angrily swings open, the abrupt clatter demanding Ethan's attention. In waddles one of his providers, donned in fuchsia scrubs and a pink and yellow Power Rangers scrub cap. She storms up to Ethan's desk, placing her hands on her hips.
"You wanted to see me?" She huffs.
Ethan motions to a chair behind her, inviting her to sit down. Raising an eyebrow, she looks at her watch. Letting out an irritating scoff, she flops into the seat and crosses her arms, her eyes locked on the crystal gaze of her boss.
"Dr. Erikson, I–"
"'Dr. Erikson'? Really, Ethan Jonah?" Tatum growls at her husband.
"Dr. Erikson," he enunciates louder, his eyebrows furrowing. "I assume you know why you're here."
Tatum lours. "Oh, please enlighten me, Dr. Ramsey."
"I got a call about a Mr. Flanagan being upset with his wife’s care–"
Tatum blows a raspberry with her lips, rolling her eyes in disbelief.
Ethan takes a moment, staring at his defiant wife before continuing. "Apparently you–" he picks up a notepad with a handwritten list, "--went against the patient’s wishes and you made an inappropriate comment about the husband's–"
Tatum interrupts with a sardonic chuckle. "'Against the patient’s wishes'? Are you fucking kidding me?"
Ethan closes his eyes, exhaling heavily. Hormones, it's just hormones. He sits back in his chair, crossing a leg over his knee before folding his hands together. "Okay… how about you tell me what happened?"
"Gladly," she smirks, her face turning crimson with rage. She stands up, readjusting her snug scrub top before pacing. "That man is an asshole." Ethan stifles his smile, but gestures for her to keep going. "I had mentioned in the clinic that this baby was measuring large for gestational age. I believed–and I was fucking right–her pelvimetry could handle a vaginal delivery, which is exactly what she wanted–and she got. But I told her that I would strongly recommend pain management in the form of an epidural."
Ethan casually shrugs his shoulders. "Okay. So?"
"Well, Mr. Macho's–" Tatum deepens her voice, rolling her shoulders forward to pretend like she has big muscles, "--mother and grandmothers and aunts never needed an epidural, and they were--" Tatum air quotes, "--'weaker than his wife, so that's not an option'."
Ethan bows his head, holding a finger over his mouth to hide his grin. Oh, that poor fucker…
"So, guess who came in 6 cm dilated, crying for an epidural?" Tatum stares at Ethan, giving a told-ya-so grin, nodding sarcastically. "Yeah," she slaps her palm on the desk in anger. "This asshole finally agrees to let her have pain medicine in her IV."
"Well, what did Mrs. Flanagan want?"
"Oh," Tatum flings her arms in the air, "whatever her douche-y husband wanted." Tatum grows quiet, watching the everyday hospital scramble through Ethan’s office window. "So, of course, the IV pain medicine barely gets her to relax because her labor is progressing rapidly, and it's time to push." She sighs dramatically.
"Out of control?"
"Reagan from The Exorcist had more control," she shakes her head as Ethan purses his lips, trying his best not to laugh. "I did everything in my power to support her perineum; I tried my best to get her to gain control of herself and just," she exhales quickly, her body deflating. "Luckily, she didn't blow out her bottom; that kid was almost 10 pounds with a 15-and-a-half inch head. And virtually no molding."
"Damn."
"Pssh, yeah," she walks back towards the desk. "But still, it wouldn't have been so bad if that dick hadn't prevented her from getting an epidural."  Tatum gingerly lowers herself back into the chair, calming herself down as she cradles her head in her hand.
"Speaking of dicks," Ethan starts, standing from his desk and sauntering to his personal coffee machine. "Mr. Flanagan said you made a comment about his?"
Tatum tosses her head back, roaring with evil laughter. "So, get this," she wiggles herself forward to sit up straight. "While I'm repairing his poor wife's fileted vagina, that asshole dared to ask me to put in a husband stitch." Tatum rolls her eyes, her voice becoming sardonically whiney. "Oh, you're so funny and original, you fucking asswipe!"
Ethan mixes in some hazelnut creamer in with the cup of coffee as he glances back to his frustrated wife. "A what? 'Husband stitch'?"
"You know," she raises an eyebrow, "to supposedly tighten things up." She growls to herself, shaking her head in disgust.
Ethan nods, remembering the uncouth term. "So, he asks for it, to which you said?"
"I explained to him that his wife's vagina is a perfect and normal postpartum size."
"Tate?"
"And," Tatum guiltily grins, "I simply observed the crotch area of his pants."
"And?"
"And I may have mentioned that... he would need way more than a stitch to accommodate for his small size."
"Tatum Ramsey!" Ethan busts out laughing as she innocently shrugs. He saunters to stand in front of her, leaning up against his desk. "Jesus fucking Christ, woman," he mutters.
"I'm not sorry," she states matter-of-factly.
"Oh, I know you aren't," Ethan chuckles, raising his eyebrows.
"So, what now?" She stands up, placing her hands on her hips. "Am I in trouble? Getting written up? What?"
"Nope, none of that." Tatum gives a curious look to her husband. He stands up, inching closer to her. "I just wanted to hear the story from you," he chuckles, smiling broadly. He slinks an arm endearingly around her shoulders. "Here," he hands her the coffee, "you need this."
She sighs, frowning, "But I've already had my one cup for the day this morning–"
Ethan tenderly places his large hand on her blossoming belly before rubbing it tenderly. "I think this little one is going to be just fine if you have an extra cup today."
"Rams, I–"
"Plus, I'd really like for my child to be born to a mother not locked behind bars." Ethan smirks. "Drink the damn coffee. Doctor's orders."
"You're lucky you're cute," Tatum attempts to scowl, but a thankful grin creeps across her face. She takes a sip of the piping hot cup of Joe and lets out a euphoric moan. "Oh my God, how do women go without a drop of this for nine months?"
Ethan chuckles, pressing his lips to her temple. "Probably the same ones with partners that request a husband stitch."

Irressistible Force Paradox: Chapter Three - An Open Heart Fic
Chapter One
Chapter Two
Ethan accuses Rory of the unthinkable and Rory fights his growing attraction to his former medical hero.
Tumblr media
September 14th.  5:49 p.m.
Oh hell.
I freeze in place, fear momentarily short-circuiting my brain as Ramsey glares at me.
Do you never go home old man!?
“Rookie, you and I n - ”
“You’re a miracle worker!” Sarah gasps, interrupting Dr. Ramsey. “Do you think she’d take a bottle now? She hasn’t had anything to eat for hours.”
I smile down at Emily.  “I think that’d be just fine.”
Sarah beams at me and rushes towards Emily’s diapers bag while Jason sags against the doorframe in relief.
“Since Emily is resting now, you and I have some things we need to discuss, Dr. O’Shea.”  Ramsey gives me a stern look and nods towards the hallway.
“Um, actually I had something I wanted to show you, Dr. Ramsey,” I meekly reply, using my free hand to motion him closer.
“Dr. O’Shea - ”
“Please,” I implore him softly.  “I think it might be important.”
He relents, sighing and stepping closer.  “What is it, Rookie?”
I lower my voice to barely a whisper.  “I noticed when I unlocked my phone to play some music Emily flinched away from the screen, almost like the brightness hurt her eyes.”
“There could be any number of explanations for that.”
“Her reflexes are sluggish, that combined with the fever, the irritability, not eating - ”
“Look, Rookie.”  Ethan puts a hand on my shoulder.  “I can appreciate that you want to help, but all these symptoms can be attributed to the sepsis. You’ve managed to calm her down and I’m sure her parents are grateful, but leave her case to the diagnostics team.”
Insufferable.  Completely, absolutely insufferable.  And gorgeous.  And tall.  And so completely climbable.  I loathe him.
Ramsey’s eyes widen and a small sound of protest leaves his mouth as I grab his hand and gently guide his fingers to the top of Emily’s head.  His face pales as his fingertips brush over the swelling that’s nearly invisible under her dark curls.
“As I was saying, all of those symptoms combined with the severe swelling of her fontanelle, makes me think the sepsis was brought on by a severe case of meningitis,” I murmur.
Ramsey gazes down at me steadily.  “You think?  I’m not going to subject an infant to a spinal tap based on your guess.”
I grit my teeth and inhale deeply.  “I know.  I know this is meningitis.”
“I’m inclined to agree,” he says.  “I’ll page Naveen and call for an anesthesiologist.  Once we confirm, we’ll need to pinpoint what variant of meningitis we’re specifically dealing with.”
“Dr. O’Shea?  I have Emily’s bottle ready.”  Sarah steps forward and takes Emily from me, gently cradling the little girl in her arms and offering her the bottle.
I turn to leave but the sight of a can of formula sticking out of Emily’s diaper bag stops me.
“Sarah?  Has Emily always been formula fed?” I ask.
Her face falls.  “Is that a problem?  I was never able to produce enough milk for her, so we had to formula feed.”
“No, not at all,” I hurriedly reassure her.  “As long as our girl gets fed, that’s all that matters.”
“What are you thinking, Rookie?” Ramsey whispers, his warm breath ghosting over my ear.
A pleasant shiver runs through me, and I almost start to lean into him, my traitorous body reacting to his close proximity.
Get it together.
“Bacterial meningitis caused by cronobacter sakazakii.” I murmur, tilting my head towards the formula can.
Ramsey’s eyes widen.  “My god,” he whispers.  “Stay here and update the parents.  I’m getting the rest of the team.”
Not thinking, I reach out and grab his arm before he can walk away. He must be able to see the panic on my face because he takes my hand in his and squeezes it once.   “You can do this, Rookie.  Walk them through your theory and what’s going to happen next. I’ll be back soon.”
10:30 p.m.
Through the window of the hospital room I watch Emily rest, an IV inserted in the crook of her tiny arm.  Jason and Sarah doze fitfully in armchairs positioned next to her crib.  Emily is sleeping soundly, her face no longer flushed with a fever; a sure sign the intravenous antibiotics are working.  My shift ended three hours ago, but I can’t bring myself to leave, worried that the minute I walk out of the hospital something awful will happen.
“What are you still doing here, Rookie?”
“Could ask you the same thing, Dr. Ramsey,” I reply, my eyes never leaving Emily’s sleeping form.
“This isn’t even your case.”  A hard edge creeps into Ramsey’s voice.
“Are you saying I should only care about the patients that I’m assigned to?”
Ramsey sighs, scratching at the thick stubble on his jaw.  “Of course not.  A good doctor will care about every patient that walks through those doors, whether they’re assigned to them or not.  But I’m not convinced anything you did this afternoon was because you cared about the patient.”
I turn to face him and cross my arms over my chest, scowling.  “Excuse me?”
“You think any other physician here would have let you get away with that little stunt you pulled this afternoon?”  Ramsey steps closer, towering over me, and I fight the urge to back away from him.
“If you hadn’t made that solve I would have had your job, Rookie,” he continues, his voice low and dark.  “Attention-seeking stunts like that won’t land you a spot on the diagnostics team, so if you ever even think about doing something like this again you will be out on your ass.”
I blink, momentarily stunned into silence.  “You think I helped Emily just to get noticed by the diagnostics team?” I finally manage to ask, unable to keep a note of hurt out of my voice.
Ramsey rolls his eyes.  “I see it every year, ambitious interns who think that if they pull off an impressive solve -”
“You think I would use a sick child to further my career?” I seethe, drawing myself up to my full five feet four inches.  I move closer, invading his personal space and jabbing a finger into his muscled chest.  “I was waiting for test results on the one case I had, so I offered to sit with Emily so Jason and Sarah could get some rest.”
His handsome face shifts into a disdainful sneer.  “So you abandoned your own patient to help mine.”
“I was partnered with Dr. Landry on that case, and he had no issues proceeding on his own for an hour or two while I assisted Jason and Sara.  I’m surprised you don’t remember that since you went out of your way to try and humiliate him when we presented earlier today,” I hiss.
Ramsey has the good grace to momentarily look abashed, and he breaks eye contact with me as his cheeks flush a faint pink.  He clears his throat.  “Now that you have mentioned it I do seem to recall -”
“I didn’t do this to get noticed by the diagnostics team,” I continue, poking him again.  “I did it because I saw a pair of scared, first time parents falling apart because their baby was sick and inconsolable.  I did it because that family needed help.”
Ramsey catches my hand in his, sending a pleasant thrill through me, and gently pulls it away from his chest.  “I may have been hasty in my initial assessment of your motivations,” he says slowly.
I rip my hand away from him, cradling it against my chest. “Don’t ever fucking touch me again.”
I turn and hurry down the hallway, trying to ignore the way my body responded to Ramsey’s touch, and how much his accusation had hurt.

“Shit.  Shit, shit, shit!” I mutter, sitting on the floor behind the intake desk and looking through the lost and found box.  I’d spent the whole day moving into a new apartment and the last thing I want to be doing is searching for my I.D. badge, but if I don’t have it tomorrow morning it will be just one more excuse for Ramsey to get on my case.  And after our last encounter outside Emily’s hospital room, I’ve been avoiding him at all costs.  I eventually find it among the sea of tangled lanyards and other bits and bobs that my fellow doctors have misplaced.
I shove the box back into place and start to stand up, wincing as the blood flows back into my lower legs.  I immediately crouch back down as raised voices carry down the corridor and draw nearer to the waiting area.  I peek over the edge of the desk, watching Ramsey throw his hands up in the air and scowl at Dr. Banerji.
“You can’t do this, Naveen!  I won’t let you!” Ramsey shouts, angrily running his hands through his hair as he paces back and forth.
“It must be done, Ethan,” Dr. Banerji says placidly.  “Not everything is in your control.  It’s time you finally learned that.”
“You are not my teacher anymore!”
Naveen gently smiles at him.  “I am always your teacher.”
“Goddamnit Naveen!”  I involuntarily gasp as Ramsey slams his fist into the wall.  Dr. Banerji sighs softly before walking away, Ramsey staring miserably after him.
What.  The. Fuck.
Faced with the choice of hiding here until Ramsey overcomes whatever internal crisis he’s going through or facing him directly… I decide to nut up. I slowly emerge from my hiding space without him noticing me.  I strongly consider just sneaking away, but then I notice the blood.  I wage a brief internal battle before making my choice.
“Dr. Ramsey?” I call out softly.
He whirls around to face me, eyes wide.  Once he recognizes me his eyes narrow and he scowls.  “Spying on me, Dr. O’Shea?”
“It’s adorable that you think I’d waste my very limited free time on you,” I snark back.
“How much did you see?” he asks, clenching his jaw.
My god, that jawline…  Focus, Rory!
I shrug.  “Enough.”
“If you speak a word about this to anyone -”
“You’re bleeding,” I interrupt.
He stares down at his hand in confusion.  “I didn’t realize…”
“Come on,” I sigh.  “Let’s get it taken care of.”
Ramsey’s shoulders stiffen.  “I am perfectly capable of -”
I roll my eyes.  “Do not fear Dr. Ramsey, even I, a lowly intern, know how to patch up busted knuckles. Just let me help.”
He refuses to move, so I grab onto the end of his tie and gently tug him towards an empty patient room.  Too shocked to protest, he obediently follows me.  Once we’re in the room I shut the door to prevent any prying eyes, and direct him to sit on the edge of the hospitable bed while I glove up and gather all the necessary items.  I sit next to him and tentatively take his hand, surprised by just how much larger it is than mine.
“Do you want to talk about it?” I ask, soaking a gauze pad in saline solution and dabbing away the drying blood on Ramsey’s knuckles.
“No,” he says tersely, refusing to look at me.
“Ok,” I murmur, focusing my attention on my work.  Some of my hair falls out of my ponytail and into my eyes. “Damn.”
“Let me.”  Ramsey’s voice is rough and there’s a slight hitch in his breathing.  He extends his uninjured hand, pausing just short of touching me.  I tilt my head up, allowing him to move the loose hair out of my eyes.  His fingertips brush against the shell of my ear, lightly trailing over the curve of my jaw as he withdraws his hand; the scrap of his calloused skin against my light five o’clock shadow causes a pleasant shiver to run through me.
I peer up at him over the rims over my glasses.  “Thank you,” I whisper, suddenly feeling nervous.
He doesn’t reply as his blue eyes rove over me, taking in every detail. “Why are you doing this?” he finally asks.
I shake my head, breaking the temporary spell he had seemingly cast over me.  “You hurt yourself,” I say, annoyed at how breathless I sound.  I snap my eyes back down to his hand, gently dabbing antiseptic cream over his cuts.
He laughs softly, the sound dark and seductive in the close quarters of the small hospital room.  “I’m fairly sure I could have managed a band-aid or two, Rookie.”
I shake my head, biting my lower lip as I concentrate on precisely placing steri-strips over his broken skin.  “I don’t know,” I finally mutter.
“You’re so different from the others,” Ramsey whispers, almost to himself.
I snap my gloves off and gather up my trash, depositing it in the appropriate disposal bins under Ramsey’s intense gaze.   “I need to go, Dr. Ramsey.  My roommates are -”
The words stutter in my chest as Ramsey stands up and catches one of my hands in his.  “I owe you an apology.”
My brain short circuits at the feel of his fingertips caressing my palm, a barely there sensation that instantly makes me wonder what that touch would feel like on other parts of my body.  “W-what?” I stammer.
“For accusing you of using Emily’s case to further your career,” he clarifies.  “It was an unfair assumption on my part, and I apologize.”
Just like that the spell is broken, the mere mention of his accusation enough infuriate me all over again.  Glaring, I jerk away from him, resolutely ignoring the faint pang of disappointment that thrums through my body as I do.  “You can take your apology and shove it up - ”
“Rookie.”  The word is a growled warning, and Ramsey has gone from contrite to furious.
“Have a nice night, Dr. Ramsey,” I say venomously as I leave the hospital room, rubbing my palm against my thigh, wishing I could erase the feeling of his touch.
