Berberis aquifolium - formerly Mahonia aquifolium (Oregon grape)
Oregon grape is another native spring flower and is usually found as an understory plant in our local coniferous rainforests. The species name aquifolium is based on Ilex aquifolium (English holly) and you must admit, Oregon grape leaves are remarkably holly-like. Actually, it's neither a grape nor a holly but rather a member of the barberry family. Incidentally, Oregon grape was declared the state flower of Oregon in 1899.

The evergreen shrub Mahonia × wagneri 'Undulata' (Oregon grape) is a hybrid of Mahonia aquifolium and Mahonia pinnata. It creates an upright shrub with wavy, glossy leaves. There are clusters of bright yellow flowers in spring.

Finally remembered to bring a container with me on a walk. Was going to get the Oregon grapes (sadly a few days too late, or I would have gotten a lot more) but found lots of dropped walnuts as well. Doubt any of them are ripe, but I'm hoping the hull will still have tannins. No idea at what point they become tannin rich, so.
Also--so one of the places I lived as a kid was in the middle of a big walnut orchard, and aside from gathering and processing them for the walnuts (my whole family did that) I just liked playing with the fallen ones. And they have a very distinct, rich smell, which I had completely forgotten until just now. I can't believe I'd forgotten it. It's a cross between floral and citrus, and very strong.
Anyway, I think I'm going to let them dry rather than try to cut the hull off, hopefully they should separate by themselves even though the nut isn't ripe. Should get a brown or black dye out of the hull.

You don’t  have  to be crazy to work here... But it kind of helps.

As a kid growing up in addition to working as mom’s maid, I was her garden slave too. She thought Oregon Grape was pretty in the garden along with Salal.  Both are invasive, spreading by root shoots. I’d forgotten just how much I hate this plant. The leaves are similar to holly leaves I have been poked and scratched to within an inch of my diabetic life. Ripe berries are still sower, the seeds are huge and hard for most of my life I’ve considered it unfit for human consumption. But it was consumed by the Native Americans who mixed it in with their Salal along with every other edible berry that grows in the area as each comes into season.
Oregon Grape is a good source of Berberine. They are advertising Berberine in pills on Tv. right now. It’s cheeper and healthier when consumed this way than in a pill.
We think we need to make +/- 15  Gallons of juice this will make up 1/5 of total volume we need 3 Gallons of Oregon Grape juice and it will take about 5 Gallons of berries to make that. This morning we harvested a quart of cleaned berries.
So starting today I’ll be harvesting berries until frost, sometime in late Sept.,  early Oct., when the Sambucus ( Elderberries ) are done. Don’t worry I’ll be stopping in to pester you plenty along the way.

Plant of the Day
Thursday 28 December 2023
The evergreen Mahonia eurybracteata subsp. ganpinensis 'Soft Caress' (Oregon grape) is a compact shrub with a soft feel to the foliage unlike many other Mahonia varieties in cultivation. There are delicate spires of yellow, honey-scented flowers in late summer and autumn, followed by blue-black berries.
