ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A KNIGHT...

the visual inspiration for this was a combination of Frederic William Burton's Meeting on the Turret Stairs and also Bernardo Cavallino's The vision of St. Dominic receiving the Rosary from the Virgin

this was supposed to be just a one off illustration to get the thoughts out of my system, but then I started thinking about medieval politics and warfare and plagues and a castle and home as both a place of refuge, a prison, and a tomb, so perhaps they will end up as ex voto characters as well.

you may say, hey! that rosary looks like it has too many beads! it's a fifteen decade rosary, probably. dominicans are really into marian devotions. it works out.

also. spiral style stair cases. oh boy. it was that unexpectedly more difficult than I originally thought it would be to draw. the more I think about it, the less I understand them, even though I had a million photos of the stairs in front of me while I was drawing it.

That one little sentence stops me cold in my tracks, my heart skipping a beat. I turn to face the parishioner that spoke, looking at me like the picture of innocence. 

“I- I’m sure I don’t know what you mean- oh-!”

They step forward until I have no choice but to step back, but they don’t stop pressing forward until my back hits the wall, the innocent smile turning into a smirk. 

“You don’t know what I mean? Then why are you so flustered, Father? You’re blushing.”

They start touching me, just a gentle little brush of their hand against mine at first, trailing up my arm and cheek. I could push them away, I should, but…

“Isn’t this what you want? Someone from your congregation to use you? I’ll keep your secrets if you show me what you were doing to make those pretty sounds you recorded.”

…But now they know everything I’ve secretly desired, and know exactly what buttons to press to make me melt into their touch.

“Good boy, Father.”

honestly though i dont even know where to begin. for the uninitiated dove is an oc of mine who ive had since i thiiink 2017 or so, maybe ? he's a knight from the middle ages who has been displaced in time to the distant future (extremely distant, in his case) where he is then " recruited " by a group called T.A.R.G.I.T. to deal with a variety of things, but more often than not freaky sci fi wasteland mutants.

dove is intense and tends to speak or show his emotions very little, lending him a kind of stoic severity in the eyes of others. he is quite cynical and distrustful but still finds himself bound to a kind of protective instinct he can't seem to ever fully shake. he's pretty superstitious and believes very strongly in the concept of fate but can't seem to stop himself from acting out in ways that spite that fact. hes a knight who deeply resents pretty much all authority. and hes morbidly obsessed with his own suffering, as you would kind of expect a guy from the middle ages to be. his favorite animals are bugs and horses, he can do a bunch of bird calls (and more !), and he enjoys reading and crocheting in his spare time

he might honestly be my favorite oc, i mean i tend to cycle through a "favorite" a lot depending but i always do end up coming back to him pretty frequently. i could easily write a full college dissertation's worth of stuff about him but ill show a bit of restraint and not do that, even though its my birthdayyyy

i know i said i wasnt going to make myself fret over these having images but i need ppl who maybe havent seen him to see him so here are some commissions from @abyssalzones and @neptunebeetle cuz i dont wanna post my own art. its old ok. and i need to redesign his armor but im showing it off here cuz these drawings still make it look sick as fuck

I grieve so deeply for those in the Gaza Ministry of Health who took the time out of their lives, facing these horrors, to collect the names and information of those dead.

When people were dropping dead by the dozen in my community during COVID, the chaos that ensued in reporting that process, between state authorities, morticians, obituaries, families struggling to play for their dead was stomach turning.

I was one part in that process, reporting numbers of the sick and dead.

These are people they undoubtedly knew.

How do you force something so cruel onto someone?

Generations of families and memories. Bonds and fondness that they can't fucking get back, and yet our president can deny these people are real, that they exist.

These names and the data attached to them, they were living breathing people, they deserved better in live and they deserve more in death.

As I think many people do, I have a fantasy original that just quietly lives in my head for the last 15 years, and I play with it sometimes, adding different parts depending on what I want to play.

The history of that world started (from the point of view of the order in which I was inventing it) because I thought, what if there were three exiled fellow conspirators (a politician, a general, and a businesswoman) who were all weird about each other; occasionally they also added more vertices to the triangle (the politician got married, the businesswoman fucked his wife, etc.).

The "present era" characters had to try to understand this relationship because unfortunately it was plot-relevant. Generally the plot was about studying history.

Abbreviated xenoblade session tonight! And it might be for the best, considering how unhinged my roommate is being right out the gate.

We load up the game (Nia and Dromarch in the lead) and the first thing she says to me is "I feel like Dickson can't be my 'hear me out' guy, because he's conventionally attractive." Great start.

And then she's like "if I had to pick one character to really freak out a xenoblade fan..." *Dromarch running around on screen* "British butler tiger! I think he'd take care of me."

Also apparently the only reason she wasn't having a crush on Riki in the first game is because he's married and she isn't a homewrecker

A little Blade lore drop and what my roommate takes away from it is "so could we cut open Gramps and get a core crystal?"

Yknow what Vandham's kind of real for all of that. I think I was already past his musings on power and justice and war when I started playing again but it's all honestly really good

The fact that Vandham is the one to say "hey, I know a guy who can handle your Ophion problem" makes me like. well first I'm glad that Minoth opened up at some point. but then. do I ship it? maybe in the past? idk?

My roommate started the blushy-crushy heart to heart before I could stop her and it got me on my tirade about kicking Tora into the sun. Good news is that she found a way to stop me dead in my tracks on that rant. Bad news is that she did it by saying "well, he might enjoy it"

Oh and apparently the list of "hear me outs" has gotten up to Dickson, Dromarch, and now Zanza. Joy!

THIS IS SUCH A GOOD QUESTION !!! i have actually tried to think about this before because i just think it would either be so messed up or so hilarious. i just love the thought of putting them in a different apocalypse also

i guess prefacing this i should say T.A.R.G.I.T. has a few branches of staff, from laboratory work to medical staff to a sanitation crew, and so on. if you're somebody who falls under some category of Anomalous (be it a status, condition, physical mutation, really what have you !) and it's labeled as stable enough you are usually "gently" "encouraged" to "join" the organization, but plenty of perfectly mundane people work there too, even some as field agents ! im establishing all of that to say they would probably all get fired pretty immediately, but lets play in the spaaaace

you could map on the whole thing with chuy and diestro pretty one-to-one for the most part, falling under anomalous status is pretty a gimmie. dont think T.A.R.G.I.T. would be willing to trust them with anything actually all that serious though, and he would also utterly fail as a lab tech, so on an extreme technicality he would probably be awarded with the title of "field researcher". as for who else would have an anomalous status i actually don't know ! my other right-away pick would probably be victoria, as a callback to that reality bubble thing we discussed. how that would be translated im not sure but she could maybe hack it as a field agent. or maybe together this group just constructs the worst "field research" team in this organization's history

relating to that somewhat, again T.A.R.G.I.T. does have their own medical staff, of whom i have thought of information for but have never posed about, that is to say he could be apart of all of that but that would maybe almost be too easy. given that we've discussed his desire or need or whatever you wanna call it, to make sense of things, and his genuine interest in The Flesh, i could see him be a lab member just as easily too. like an actually competent lab assistant, who's maybe unlucky enough to be the one who has to decipher/aid the work of the aforementioned worse ever "field research" team

kevin and emma im admittedly stuck on. who would hire these dudes. within this setting outside of T.A.R.G.I.T. there are other groups and forces in play, one of which is fairly often roaming mercenaries of sorts. i feel like that would have to be the direction they go in cuz i dont even know if they would have the chance to be fired actually, because like, Who Would Hire These Dudes
