Im curious about what is cannon and fannon in the AC fandom. Ive read many different origins for the scar Desmond has, but most people go with Bill being the one to give it to him. Is this because its cannon from a little known source(similiar to the fact that Altaïr can swim, as seen in the 3ds games, but most people make him unable to swim despite the fact) or is it widely accepted fannon? What about Masyaf castle? Ive read some fics about it being an Abstergo facility with the Templars having opened the Library, while others write it is just been left to time. And ofc cant forget Eagle Vision. Is it a unique ability to Altaïr only? Did his father have it too? Did every novice have to master it before becoming an assassin?
There could be others, but these are the facts that im mostly curious about. Thank you for answering. ^^
So I’m gonna break this into sections so I don’t have to think about scene transition or whatever rambling equivalent that has.
Altaïr Can Swim
We all accept that he can’t swim because that’s funny. However, if we take into consideration how Altaïr can swim as seen in his ‘sequel’, this is pretty much the complete opposite of “Altaïr has never been hit” status that he has in the fandom. They both causes desyncing so if we believe in “Altaïr has never been hit” then it’s not that Altaïr can’t swim, it’s that “Altaïr never slipped or fell into the waters” which actually points more to Altaïr being a badass. But we decided that Altaïr not being able to swim is a much funnier idea and went to town with it XD
Bill Being The Reason Desmond Has His Scar
Okay, so ngl, I also liked to write that Bill is the reason Desmond has a scar, either directly or indirectly (I mostly go for indirectly with another kid being the reason why he has a scar but Bill was there ‘supervising’), mostly because I like the plot point that getting the scar is the thing that finally snaps Desmond and got him to leave the Farm ‘randomly’.
Anyway, the canon/fanon blur a lot in this one as there are enough people that believe Bill made the scar as seen by this post.
My thoughts on that is pretty much summarized in the tags I left in that one:
#wait it's official? #or did we as a fandom just collectively saw how bill treated desmond and went #ah yes he's why desmond has that scar #seriously i hc it and it makes sense narratively for bill to be the reason why desmond has a scar #whether from training or by accident #but i don't remember it being even implied in any games #especially in ac rev where it could have easily been added in
To add to that, I’m talking about AC Revelations specifically because of Desmond’s rant in an early scene where he finally shouts at Bill for being a bad father. That was the perfect time to just drop that bombshell of Bill being the reason why Desmond has his scar but we didn’t get that. That’s the main reason why I don’t think it’s canon that Bill is the reason why Desmond got his scar but there’s 3 more scenes in AC Revelations where he could have talked about it, all of them from Desmond’s memories scenes.
I also talked about how I couldn’t find any evidence of Bill being the reason that Desmond got his scar in this post.
But the summary is I tried looking for any information about it in the books, pamphlet, manuals and references I had (I say ‘had’ because I had to leave them back in my old home after I moved due to space constraints TTATT), only focusing on any mentions of Desmond and Bill
Assassin's Creed Limited Edition Art Book (p40-41)
Assassin's Creed The Complete Visual History (p290 -292) - p291 has the line "... Desmond's father, William, adds an element of family drama..." calling it family drama sounds like an understatement considering how Bill and Desmond act around each other
Assassin's Creed The Essential Guide (p14, 66, 161, 218-219, 236, 238, 240) - this book is so weird. P218 says that Bill and Gavin shared the mentor role after the Great Purge, p237 says that only Bill took the mentor role (but didn't call himself the mentor) after the Great Purge
Assassin's Creed Atlas (p159, 165)
Assassin's Creed Encyclopedia (White Version) (p18, 158-183)
Assassin's Creed Encyclopedia (White Version - JP ver) (p18, 158-183)
Assassin's Creed Encyclopedia (Black Version - JP ver) (p17, 113-127) - The Black Version is an older version, only going as far as AC Revelations + The Fall comics, The White Version has up to 3 + Liberation
No mentions at all about Desmond's relationship with Bill in the following:
That short game manual that's inside the game disc for AC1-AC3 (JP ver)
Assassin's Creed Reference Guide (JP)
Assassin's Creed Perfect Guide (JP)
Assassin's Creed 2 Reference Guide (JP)
Assassin's Creed Archive Book (JP)
In conclusion:
The most I got can be summarized from Assassin's Creed Encyclopedia, p182
"... driven, intelligent but emotionally distant father of Desmond Miles..." " ... technically minded man, fully devoted to the Assassins and their cause, whose passion for politics outweighs his responsibility to his family. While William's wife has always been able to deal with this emotional distance, young Desmond could not. Eventually he grew to feel that his father was more of a drill sergeant than a parent and fled the compound, despite his parents' repeated warnings to never leave."
If Bill did directly or indirectly cause Desmond's scar, I could not find it in the official books I have or even on Desmond's or Bill's AC Wiki page.
Unless someone can point out where it officially states that Bill caused Desmond's scar, I believe the whole "Bill is the reason for Desmond's scar" is AC fandom's own Mandela Effect. Most probably something that started as a headcanon (and for a very good reason) and is commonly used by fanfic writers (including me) which has evolved as a Word of Dante that we, as a collective, have mistaken as a Word of God.
Masyaf’s Current Situation
There’s no official note of the current situation of Masyaf in the modern days and I think Ubisoft would probably not do anything about it narrative-wise… I’d honestly be surprised if they did anything about it if they make an AC1 Remake. Now, it’s a bit nebulous if the Templars did manage to get the library but it should be noted that the last time we see Altaïr’s Apple, Ezio let it stay in the library and the ACR novel gave us:
“The bookshop was used as an outpost for the Assassins, and Ezio stored the Masyaf Keys in the chamber where he had found the first key, underneath the bookshop.”
If the Templars got into the bookshop then they’ll find all the keys and would have everything they needed to get into the library.
However…
The Apple would find itself in the hands of Queen Elizabeth I and Mahatma Gandhi before falling into Templar hands.
As far as I can see, Queen Elizabeth I isn’t a Templar so it’s highly possible that the British Empire did their usual ‘finders keepers’ thing and this wasn’t a nefarious Templar plan. So either Ezio got the Apple out of Masyaf and hid it somewhere else that would later be found by someone (maybe John Dee?) or Ezio… just left it in Masyaf?
I wanna give Ezio the benefit of the doubts and believe that he knew leaving it in Masyaf would be such a bad idea so the Apple was most probably transferred somewhere else.
Which means that Masyaf was completely abandoned by the end of Ezio’s era which Ezio would have believed be something that Altaïr wanted to happen.
I realized now I’m rambling further and further away from the actual topic for this section.
In conclusion: we have no idea if Masyaf is abandoned or occupied by the Templars in modern day. I will also add if it’s occupied by Templars, it might be a secret ‘base’ or it’s affiliated with a non-Abstergo Entertainment section of Abstergo because, as far as I can see, Abstergo Entertainment’s headquarters are based on existing Ubisoft headquarters (ex: Black Flag’s Abstergo Entertainment is in Montreal = Ubisoft Montreal)
Personally, I think that Abstergo would take over Masyaf castle either officially or unofficially as a way to show the Brotherhood how they hold one of the most important locations in their history. That’s the kind of power play the current Inner Sanctum would do.
(It would be funny in a ‘that’s fucked up’ kind of way if Masyaf is an Abstergo secret facility that does experimental work with captured Assassins as guinea pigs which they have done in the Philadelphia facility (Fall comics) and Madrid (AC Movie))
Eagle Vision
It was actually never explicitly stated who had Eagle Vision and who hadn’t but it’s noted that humans, in general, have the capability to unlock Eagle Vision although there are humans who has an easier time unlocking it.
AC1 noted that the Levantine Assassins knew about Altaïr’s Eagle Vision but there’s no evidence to suggest that they have it as well. Most of the time, they just tell Altaïr to use his vision without saying if they have it as well or not.
(it’s just personal preference to write that 12th century Assassins, both in Masyaf and Alamut, would have some form of Eagle Vision to show how much the Brotherhood had ‘fallen’ in the modern day. Canon actually points that only a small number of people can access Eagle Vision)

i just can't with all the layers here. this is from p291 of HTN, immediately after lines about using fresh blood wards because then harrow will "be safe from us". (us!!) what we think in the first pass is that this is ortus (g1deon) talking nonsense to harrow as she's trying to kill him. weird shit, like the letters harrow finds in the other world. but after NTN, i realize this is pyrrha. on a reread, it's specified several times that g1deon does not open his eyes during this scene- which would have given pyrrha away!
meanwhile with all of this in HTN, harrow's possessed by the soul of Commander Wake, who's wreaking havoc in her head. through all of this, while telling harrow how to protect herself from g1deon and his orders from jod to kill her...
in these few short lines, is pyrrha seeing the soul of her dead lover, and asking why—

Day Five, Part 1
[This is the sixth part of a collected liveblog/analysis of Nona the Ninth! See here for the other parts. ]
In this section, we get several deep cuts back to Gideon the Ninth. Also, Ianthe is back and she’s here to absolutely steal the show!
Chapter 20
-p287 Are Nona’s beloved magazines the sexy kind of magazines? If so, I bet that was another mark toward Gideon on CamPal’s tracker, heh!
-p288 Aha!! Okay, now I finally think I understand what was going on with Pal apparently seeing through Cyth’s Lyctoral invisibility, which had puzzled me for a long while! It sounds like Pal asked to examine Cyth and cure her cancer earlier in the trials, and she used it as an opportunity to mess with him. But joke’s on her, he later used the experience to be able to work blind through her Lyctoral invisibility to actually turbocharge her cancer in the final battle.
-Also, I see we’re finally getting Nona’s secret - that she’s dying and knows it. Nona’s body (Harrow’s body) is rejecting Nona’s soul. Heh, and even Pal can’t tell if that confirms or denies Harrow or Gideon is present.
-p290 I’m not sure who or what Pal is referring to as a “water bottle” here, but I am sure that both Gideon and Harrow would be very offended.
-p291 Grand Lysis and Petty Lysis, hm? Wonder if those will replace Perfect/Imperfect Lyctor terminology, or if the fandom will be too set on its existing terms.
(Also is it just me, or is that really hard to read as Lis-is rather than Lie-sis? But then, I keep saying Like-tor rather than Lick-tor in my head too…)
-Also, I’d been thinking so much about Hot Sauce’s reaction that I hadn’t really thought much about Nona not wanting to be a zombie; I didn’t realize she hadn’t put two and two together that her whole little family is zombies!
-p294 The Angel is the BOE… hang on. Is the Angel WAKE? Possessing another body? Hm….
Or alternatively, BOE’s commander who took over after Wake?
Yeah, probably not Wake herself, because I don’t think Pal would confuse an implant for a revenant possessing a dead body?? And yet…
Also, the Angel doesn’t seem nearly as angry as Wake would be, and I imagine Wake would very quickly recognize Harrow’s body.
So, “high up BOE commander but not Wake” is my going theory.
-p295 A lot of talk that makes me 90% sure Pyrrha just volunteered to heed Ianthe’s call. Which follows quite well with fanfic Pyrrha often being the one to go covert and pretend to be on John’s side for a while!
-OOH. And I was wrong. Corona is the one going? Well, that also does make sense. She wants to get back to Ianthe.
-p297 And now we’ve got the Tridentarius twins’ mother’s name! Violabeth Tritos.
-p298 Yup, Ianthe puppeting Babs! Who had “Ianthe gets in on the game of musical chairs with bodies” on their Nona prediction card?
-p300 Ah, so in the Nine Houses it’s “Marry, Kill, Reanimate.” I think I like this version better… maybe. What are we reanimating them to do, exactly?
Oh gosh. The twins were totally playing this game with the House scions in the background of GtN, weren’t they? Someone get on that fic! XD
Also - in hindsight, of course Corona would try to save Judith this way, wouldn’t she?  We Suffer just got played.
-p301 Heh. Even after becoming a Lyctor, Ianthe gets upstaged by her sister’s death on the day of her ascension. Bet that rankled.
-p303 Ah, so Pyrrha did go to the barracks too! Or maybe Ianthe caught her. Interesting that Ianthe still thinks it’s G1deon in there… Pyrrha continues to be a good actor.
-And also, confirmation of what the fanfics thought - post-HtN John would be moping around and miserable, with Ianthe running the show.
-p304 Wasn’t fishhook one of their codewords? Pyrrha found something valuable they need to help her recover? (Gideon’s body, I imagine?)
Chapter 21
-p307 I had thought there was something familiar about Nona using the chair as a weapon! As Cam says here, that was very Gideon to use it two-handed. Perhaps the mystery voice was Harrow to Gideon about Nona?
[Later me: It’s also very Alecto to use a twohander, which I’d forgotten at this time.]
-p308 Ha, so it was the codewords! I recognized fishhook, but forgot about deadweight. So who planted the bug on Judith, I wonder? Pyrrha or Corona?
-Hm, so Ianthe is puppeting Babs remotely from what’s at least a few lightyears away? Impressive. But we did get the John interludes to emphasize that cross-continental puppeting is possible. Did he teach Ianthe for this to work?
-p313 Come to think of it, if John is busy having a mid-myriad crisis, who renamed Gideon? I could totally believe that overblown name was Ianthe’s idea.
-p317 Oh no it’s 2am and Cam is about to try to pass Nona as Harrow and aaaaaah no way I can put the book down now!!
John 9:22
-p320 I do wonder to what degree John’s abilities are similar to an average Nine Houses necro at this point. Regenerating Bone is something only Harrow and Lyctors could do. Killing all hostiles in a large radius - the way he senses their hearts to stop them sounds more like a Lyctor thing.
Chapter 22
-p322 Ohh, so that’s what the Iris Dye was for - of course, they need to hide Nona’s eyes.
-And yes, as much as Nona would dislike being Gideon, she really wouldn’t be able to stand Harrow’s normal life at all.
-p322 Answering the question of why Harrow isn’t mad! Love how thorough Cam is being.
I’m guessing the “blindness stops the madness” is complete hogwash meant to placate the Edenites, though. Wonder how long it will convince Ianthe?
-p325 Oh man, that’s right! This will be Cam’s third round vs a Lyctor (Cyth, then Harrow, now Ianthe). And this time, she should stand a reasonable chance!
-Interesting that they don’t do Harrow’s skull paint on Nona! I suppose no one present knows how to do it well enough, and if Harrow had been living in hiding, she theoretically wouldn’t wear it.
Chapter 23
-p333 Ianthe did you really just say “distaff counterpart” out loud. The internet doesn’t exist anymore, where did you even read TV Tropes?!
John, this is all your fault.
[Later me: Using the term “distaff” to describe the female side of something obviously predates the internet, but as far as I can tell, the specific term “distaff counterpart” really is a TV Tropes-invented construction. Therefore: does this qualify as a meme?]
-p334 Wow, so fanfics were right that the entire Sixth House facility was moveable! I thought they just evacuated everyone, but no, we’re really going there!
-p335 Another fan theory confirmed! Cassie left instructions for the Sixth. Is she perhaps still alive?
-p335 Ianthe going all Evil Dictator is amusing, but also - now I really wonder what kind of political/leadership education she and Corona got, and how the Third government works.
-p338 Ohhh dear Nona just called out to the RB for help in its own language. Oh dear. Oh no. This will all end terribly and spectacularly.
-p342 Ah yes, Ianthe’s genre-savviness does make her a much more entertaining villain.
This girl hasn’t just read the Evil Overlord List, she probably has a framed copy on her bedroom wall.
-p343 Well then. That reference to Corona’s teenage suicide antics is probably going to result in a fanfic or two!
Interesting that Ianthe apparently didn’t want to be the Crown Princess. I guess she’s really into ruling from the shadows.
-p345 Cutting all the way back to the Third challenging the Sixth was not the GtN reference I was expecting in this book!
-Some general thoughts on Ianthe - as far as I can recall, this is the most outright villainous we’ve seen her at, isn’t it?
Like, she’s always aspired to it, but until now she’s mostly been a petty jerk and her most notable acts of evil (murdering Babs, saving John) were both arguably (and therefore fascinatingly) justified considering the circumstances (a rogue killer on the loose, the death of the Houses). But here, we have Ianthe outright planning to murder the leadership of the Sixth like the evil emperor (evil queen?) wannabe she is.
Basically where I’m going with this is, how messed up is life on the Third if Ianthe thinks “yeah I’ll just kill the leaders and oppress the population” is a viable strategy?
As much as I’ve been saying “I can’t wait to see Ianthe get worse,” I also do wonder how far she’ll go. A big part of her appeal to me is her role as kind of this blatantly unsubtle Token Evil Teammate, but giving her any true power would move her into a more straightforwardly villainous role (as we see here).
Will she make that transition successfully while still being entertaining? Signs point to yes - at the very least, her genre-savviness and generally casual demeanor are still very fun to read!
Chapter 24
-p352 Oooh, Pal kicking Ianthe out and jumping into Babs’s body. Very nice. Was that using the revenant rules about the murder weapon (Ianthe stabbing Cam), or did Pal just out-necro her in a battle at the center of the mind?
-Poor Nona, having to mulch her hand in the entropy field. (So it was Mercy who made the field, then? Makes sense, that’s the Eighth’s trial.)
-p360 Hmhm! So Gideon’s corpse still has her eye color. Nona’s eyes are Alecto’s eyes, then.
-p360 Heh. So in the end, Gideon’s corpse does get kissed to bring her back(?). That’s something I thought would stay confined to fanfic!  (Then again, Muir was a fanfic writer…)
-p363 Hm! So John was the one who dressed Gideon? Really? Corona says it’s not Ianthe’s taste - but then, Ianthe’s tastes may have changed a bit since she went Lyctor.
[Later me: oh god, it’s Gideon’s own taste, isn’t it? Of course she’d wear the gaudiest and glitziest thing possible, especially if John pressured her not to wear black.]
-p363 Another place of Nona referring to Crown as Corona. Hm. Does that indicate anything? (Also, did Nona just transfer Gideon’s soul back to her body?)
-p367 There’s a few more hurdles to overcome here (especially with the Sixth House), but Pal’s plan is surprisingly close to what I’ve seen in fanfics. In the end, the real fight always seems to come back to the Ninth.
-p368 Yup, it’s Gideon!!!
And wow, unconscious to Sex Pal in seconds. Wonder how aware she was while everything else was going on?
Presumably she was pretty aware, given that she immediately recognizes Pal in Babs’ body!
-Gideon disliking needles - another good call on many a fanfic’s part!
-Ugh, but I need to sleep….and there’s still about a hundred pages left. Grrrrrrrr…

He thought that the one thing that might break down American Democracy was the hysterical efficiency with which these pressure groups crusaded to seize all the benefits of that Democracy for themselves: the farm bloc, the women’s bloc, the manufacturers’ associations, the consumers’ associations, the bar associations, the medical associations, the Protestant ministerial associations, the labor unions, the anti-labor unions, the Communist Party and the Patriotic Flag Associations. Drug stores combining to force legislation forbidding the sale of aspirin on trains. Irish Catholics voting not as Americans but as Irish AND Catholics, Swedish Lutherans voting as Swedish Lutherans, Arkansas Baptists voting as Neanderthals.
Catholics forbidding the Episcopalians to advocate birth-control, and Methodists forbidding the Unitarians to drink their ancestral rum, and people who really believe in Christianity overwhelmingly outvoted by all these monopolies.
Gangs of Fascists damning the Jews — always the opening gambit in any mass insanity — until the Jews are forced to create their own alliances, and these become a new Sanhedrin that censors the Jews who won’t submit to the new Mosaic Law.
The Friends of Russia, the Friends of Germany, the Friends of the British Empire, the Friends of the Slovenes and Croats, the Sons of the American Revolution, and the Sons of Dog Fanciers.
Each of these private armies led by devout fanatics — not always on salary — who believe that the way to ensure freedom for everybody is to shut up every one of their opponents in jail for life, and that this is a very fine, new solution.
God save poor America, this quiet man thought, from all the zealous and the professionally idealistic, from eloquent women and generous sponsors and administrative ex-preachers and natural-born Leaders and Napoleonic newspaper executives and all the people who like to make long telephone calls and write inspirational memoranda.

That Time When Farragut Threatened to Burn a Town by the Mississippi River
To be precise, Donaldsonville in Louisiana 😏.
Was it a mere bluff, or did he make true of his words? See it for yourself, and keep reading... 😏😉
In August 10th 1862, he reported to the (Navy) Department about the destruction of Donaldsonville.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"SIR: I regret to inform the Department that at the town of Donaldsonville, on the Mississippi, they have pursued a uniform practice of firing upon our steamers passing up and down the river. I sent a message to the inhabitants that if they did not discontinue this practice I would destroy their town. The last time I passed up to Baton Rouge to the support of the army, I anchored about six miles above Donaldsonville, and heard them firing upon the vessels coming up, first upon the Sallie Robinson and next upon the Brooklyn. In the latter case they made a mistake, and it was so quickly returned that they ran away. The next night they fired again, upon the St. Charles. I therefore ordered them to send their women and children out of town, as I certainly intended to destroy it on my way down the river; and I fulfilled my promise to a certain extent. I burnt down the hotels and wharf buildings, also the dwelling house and other buildings of a Mr. Philippe Landry, who is said to be a captain of guerillas. He fired upon our men, but they chased him off. We also brought off some ten or twelve of his negroes, and supplied ourselves with cattle and sheep from his place."
(Life of David Glasgow Farragut, Loyall Farragut 1879, p291-292)
He made true of his threat 😏. This wasn't the first time he threatened to fire upon/burn down a city however — heck, he even threatened to fire upon the city of New Orleans when William B. Mumford lowered the Union flag raised by the Marines of USS Cayuga over the former US Mint (which was then destroyed by a mob), though he didn't end up doing it (he just removed the Louisiana state flag, this time with 250 Marines from his flagship USS Hartford).
In short...
Tumblr media
(yes yes there are other general officers that did arson for the sake of destroying the confederacy, but hey these two gentlemen live rent free on my mind atm 😏😉😂🙈)

Agent Summers is Max’s Mom
Okay, I’ve had this theory rattling around in my head since the early days of Chapter 7, but today’s update just solidified it for me. I 100% believe that Agent Summers is/was Max’s mom.
First of all, we know that Spender was mentored by a pyrokinetic spectral - he says so outright during his fight with Forge (ch4 p127):
Tumblr media
And we find out in today’s update that Agent Summers was “slinging fire” in combat (ch7 p51):

Agent Summers is clearly the figure in the background of this panel, as Spender, Mina, and Garcia are the kids, Walker is the large man behind them, and the newly-introduced Shrike is the one in the eyepatch, as referenced earlier in this page. They’ve got their hair half-shaved and are wielding a flaming torch of some sort. Compare that to Mom Puckett’s appearance (ch4 p111):

She’s rocking a punk vibe, with the piercings and tattoos, so I could totally imagine her having a more outlandish hairstyle in her younger years. And she’s got two different flaming/smoking instruments on her here, the welding torch and her cigarette. For the entirety of the small amount of screen-time she’s gotten, she’s been consistently associated with fire and metal.
In an in-character Q&A on Twitter, Zach revealed that Spender had a total of four mentors during his time at the Activity Consortium (from the Paranatural wiki):

One of them is obviously Walker, and Summers is also named as one of them (regardless of whether Summers is Max’s mom, of course). I believe that the other two are the Doctors Burger, as Gwen certainly shows familiarity towards Mina and Richard (ch7 p7):

And Gwen also lists Summers alongside herself and Walker and Boss Leader (ch7 p9):

I originally assumed that the fourth was the current Boss Leader’s predecessor, but there’s been no indication in canon to suggest that that was the case. Shrike seems to have specifically been a mentor for Garcia, and in today’s update, both of Ed’s parents are referenced alongside their other mentors. which leads me to believe that Ed’s father is the fourth.
...I suppose it could also be Francisco, but he isn’t affiliated with the Consortium. Anyways!
A couple of other minutiae to cover re: Agent Summers = Mom Puckett:
1. Summers would obviously be her maiden name - assuming that she did, in fact, take the name Puckett when she married. Since we’ve never heard Mom Puckett’s first or last name in canon, maybe she never changed it?
2. From what I can tell, the Barrier wasn’t put up until Spender, Mina, and Garcia were in their late teens. She easily could’ve just left Mayview with no issue.
3. Given that Spender’s only 13 years older than Max, Mom Puckett would need to be a few years older than him for that situation to not be awful. Which, of course, would be a not-unreasonable age to be mentoring new spectrals in the Consortium.
4. Spender’s reaction to Gwen mentioning Agent Summers’ name, coupled with what little information we know about Max’s mom’s death, (ch2 p9):

(that speech bubble has been theorized by others in the fandom to represent burn scars), and also coupled with this comment from Max, (ch5 p291):
Tumblr media
really only feel like they point in one direction. Why bring up the idea that his mom was “normal, I guess” if she actually was?
As for why she left? Maybe she just got tired of the danger and fear and wanted to be safe. Maybe she just really wanted to settle down and have a family. Maybe she was injured or otherwise shaken up by a particular encounter and decided that enough was enough. Until we get more concrete information, that part of the story is merely speculation at this point.
