Yet Forgives the Butcher's Knife

It's finally here! Yet Forgives the Butcher's Knife is my submission for the Jaysteph Weekend 2022, filling the prompts "Do I Want to Know?", College, and the chaotic bonus the Trifecta of Trouble.

Disclaimer: This follows Canon events up to a point, but since DC has the inability to stick to one timeline or version of events without retconning it, I'm taking liberties with some plot points.

“Okay, J. Are you trying to be a vigilante? I gotta warn you, it's brutal. It's actually why I'm here. My dad's a D-list rogue, Cluemaster, and I hated how he ruined my mom's and my life, so I became Spoiler, spoiling his plans. Batman didn't like me running around as a tween without his approval, even though I was older than, like, all the Robins.

“Anyways, I ignored him, he kinda accepted I was there to stay, I had a couple months internship with as Robin before he fired me, and I went back to being Spoiler, started a gang war by accident, got caught by an A-list rogue and tortured...I flatlined in Leslie's OR and she faked my permanent death and moved us here to teach Bats a lesson about his kids or something.

“So, now you know Steph Brown,” Steph laughed easily.

“Wow, that's, um, a lot to process. Are you okay? Seeing a therapist or something? That sounds like a trip.”

“Oh yeah, it was. I'm okay-ish now...I mean, your black helmet isn't really helping my PTSD, but they're pretty common and it's not blatantly skull-like so...I'm okay.”

“You got caught by Black Mask?”J's jaw dropped, though Steph couldn't see it. “And survi-I mean...”

Steph grinned at J's faux pas. “It's fine, I have dark humour—being a Gothamite, and from the Narrows at that, it's kinda a prerequisite.”

“You're a Narrows kid? You hide the accent well,” J commented in surprise.

“Thanks? You know another Narrows kid or somethin'?”

“Wasn't it speculated that Robin 2 was from the Narrows?” Jason deflected, hoping Steph would bite.

“Yeah, he was my favourite. Street kid, Narrows like me—we might even have been neighbours!--fought smart but dirty, and he understood us in a way Bats and the first Robin didn't...he cared about us, y'know? The others cared more about stopping crime than the victims—I mean, obviously the crime needed to stop so there wouldn't be more victims, but Robin 2 was one of us and could connect with us. Batman and Nightwing are strangers, practically. Once I was on my way home from stalking my dad and some creep was trailing me. I could tell, but Robin swung down and took 'im out before I was in danger, and then he followed me home...it was so sweet. I always had the biggest crush on him...I was so sad when I heard he died. He was one of ours, one of us...sometimes I wonder what he'd be like if he was alive.”

With a sigh Steph shook off the melancholy and turned to J. “Sorry for the infodump. So, J, thanks you for the assist. And don't become a vigilante for fun.”

“I won't. Thanks for livening my evening. I liked your right hook...but saw your form was off on a couple moves. Did Batman not train you? I thought all his little birdies had a Ph.D in karate or somethin'...”

“Well, I was never a true Robin. Barely got any training from the big guy. He didn't even let me know anyone's ID or anythin' cool—basically all I got was the suit and a ton of lectures, more than Spoiler ever got. What a prick,” she muttered.

“He sounds like a huge prick,” agreed J. “If you'd like...I could improve your skills a bit? I've had a few professional trainers myself...”

“Sure, I'd love to get some formal training for once! When and where?”

“I have a building in town. Are you free tomorrow?”

“Yeah, all day.”

“Be ready at 9 a.m., then. Night, Doll!” J left her on Leslie's doorstep and Steph went in to Leslie's worried questioning.

At 9:00 sharp J pulled up on a black motorcycle. Steph was waiting with a duffel and hopped on, driving to a nondescript warehouse-style building 15 minutes away from Leslie's. J walked to the door and went through fingerprint, retinal, and password locks. Finally J and Steph walked in to see an enormous gym, with mats, weights, ropes, a shooting range, archery range, pool, and various intense workout equipment.

J showed Steph to the bathroom and she changed into a tanktop and shorts before joining him in warmup stretches on the mats. “You're flexible,” J noted.

“Thanks— I took gymnastics lessons for 3 years before my dad got worse. I liked it and kept doing what I could...and that was one thing Batman helped with.”

For the next month J drastically improved Steph's form, skills, and stamina.

“How do you know all these skills? Do I want to know?” asked Steph one day during a water break.

“Can you keep a secret?” J asked, leaning in. Steph nodded. “I'm the second Robin.”

Steph stared at him, then started laughing. “Fine, then, keep your secrets.”

J stared back. “Fine. My mom has been training me for the past 3 years with various martial arts forms and weapons and some other fun stuff, like poisons and bombs and strategy. Happy?”

“You're serious,” Steph said flatly.

“Yes!”

“Huh. So...you're a ninja-in-training?”

“I am a ninja, but sure. I was just here to take care of a couple things for my mom when I met you.”

“You...stayed...here? For me?”

J nodded. “I really like you, Steph. A lot.”

“You like me too?”

J blinked. “You like me?”

Steph nodded emphatically. “Even if i still don't know if you're a 10 or not with that dramatic mask you always wear,” she joked.

“Will you go on a proper date with me, Stephanie Brown?”

“No.” J's face fell, but Steph continued, “I will join you in a spar and I will kick your butt one day.” She sat up and moved to the mats again. J laughed, “You're perfect.”

After their training session J walked Steph home as he always did. In sight of Leslie's, J paused and Steph turned to see why. He took her hand and took a breath. “My name is Jason. Jason al Ghul.”

Stephanie smiled at him. “Thank you for telling me, Jason. Jason...I like it. It suits you.”

The next morning before their warm up began, Jason opened up to Steph. “Do you have time to hear my life story? It's depressing, at least for a non-Gothamite.”

“I'll always listen,” Steph said softly, taking his hands in hers. It always seemed to ground him and lately he'd started to do it unconsciously. Jason smiled at her and began.

“I'm a street kid from Crime Alley. My dad was a two-bit goon and my mom had a heroin addiction since she had cancer. She died when I was 8 and my dad was...gone, so I hit the streets. When I was 12, I was adopted by a wealthy man and I was actually safe—he was one of the few good ones. Sometimes we'd go back to Crime Alley to help my friends or the street kids. I had an older brother, but he was gone in Blüd most of the time. He didn't like me too much at first because our dad “replaced” him with me, but we'd started to get closer when he realized he was being a Dick.” Jason smiled at some joke Steph didn't get yet, then continued. “When I was 15, my dad and I got in a fight and I was grounded...I found my bio mom in Ethiopia and flew there to meet her. I thought she was blackmailed by Joker and tried to get her out, but she...she sold me out to him and smoked a cigarette as she watched him beat me half to death. Then he tied her up and left us in the warehouse with a bomb...I managed to get my mom free but I was caught in the explosion. I'm strong considering I'm from Crime Alley and the beating and bomb didn't finish me off," Jason smirked at that absolutely devastating tidbit. “The smoke and dust inhalation got me. I woke up in my coffin 6 feet underground and dug myself out with my belt buckle and left my fingernails in the dirt there. I wandered around, catatonic and relying on muscle memory for a few months until I started beating up some of my third mom's men and she came to see what the fuss was about. When my catatonia didn't lift, she put me in a pool of magic life juice, which healed me and upgraded my trauma to insanity and bloodlust. Once the Pit Madness settled, Mom sent me around the world, training with masters to become the best.

“I know it was partly to stall me, because my dad is her baby daddy and she doesn't want him dead, while I did. He never killed the Joker for me, for everyone else's safety, and I almost killed him and my brothers. Thankfully the Madness subsided, and while I'm still mad he didn't kill Joker, I'm not going to kill him over it. He won't kill, so I'll leave him alone and do it myself. I need a moniker for when I make the statement that I'm a better man than him, and since you don't like my black helmet, I'm thinking of stealing the clown's old name as a last laugh. So, could you stand a red helmet?”

Steph blinked. “Wow, your life is sadder than mine. Yeah, a red helmet wouldn't bother me at all. You look good in red, anyways.” She understood deflection very well, and let Jason steer the conversation away from what he'd just unloaded.

“Then meet the Red Hood,” Jason bowed to Steph and she giggled.

“Your story sounds kinda familiar, though.”

Jason removed the domino mask he normally wore around Steph (since he didn't wear the helmet around her). “You weren't kidding?” she gaped. “ You are Robin 2...wait, you look familiar...”

“My headstone says Jason Peter Todd, if that helps,” offered Jason.

“If Jason Todd was Robin 2, then Robin 1 has to be Dick Grayson, which means...” Steph's eyes grew larger. “Brucie Wayne, Ph. D in idiocy, is Batman?!”

“Got it in one, Doll,” Jason winked.

“That makes so much sense,” moaned Steph. “No wonder he never told me his name!”

“Your friend Robin 3 is Tim Drake, Bruce's newest adoptee. Looks like Drake finally died and B got custody again.”

“Wait,” interrupted Steph. “Why did Bruce adopt you? You met him as Batman, right? Well he caught me and never adopted me...how unfair!”

“You don't have black hair, Blondie,” Jason teased. “Step 1: dye your hair black. Step 2: Be a smart aleck and make Batman laugh because you stole the Batmobile's tires. Step 3: Reverse psychology: Hit 'im with your tire iron and run. Be reluctantly caught and thus adopted when he finds out you're a homeless orphan.”

Steph wheezed with laughter. “Of course you stole the Batmobile's tires! Oh man, the look on B-man's face must've been legendary!”

Jason grinned proudly. “At the time I was scared to death, but looking back, it was pretty funny....So, what'm I like, since I am alive?”

She buried her face in her hands. “Ughh, why? I can't believe I rhapsodized about you to you! Oh, kill me now. And I told you I had a crush on you...whyyyy?!” she wailed dramatically and Jason chuckled at her expense, the brat. Steph glared at him through her fingers.

“Sorry, I kinda like you, so Imma have to pass on the offer to murder you.”

“Stoppp,” she blushed, glad she was already hiding her face from him.

Hi i was the anon who sent you the thrall is dad and im sorry. i made a faux pas and didn't realize how you enjoyed the content because i've only been following for a very short amount of time. i thought the spoilers were the lines and content in the video, not the fact it existed because 8.2 spoilers were in promo material for months so i didn't think about it. i am very, very sorry honestly! it was a mistake on my part and if i had known better i wouldn't have sent it.

“8.2 baine rescue cinematic” IS CONTENT. IT’S AN ENTIRE SCENARIO AND ENDS WITH A CINEMATIC! i forgive you, it was an honest mistake, but this shit is exhausting.

I think people need to understand what spoilers are. generally, people want to share spoilers because they have very important information in them that garner very intense emotional reactions. that’s why it’s considered a spoiler; it detracts from the initial impact of seeing it oneself or allowing the narrative to take its natural course. it’s not just that it ruins the story; it ruins one’s experience of it.

one of my good friends spoiled Legion for me even though he thinks he didn’t. how can that be? well, here’s how the conversation went:

“Did you do the Broken Shore event yet?” Me: No. I haven’t. My computer has been broken. Do not tell me anything about it. “Oh, well, I just wanted to make sure you were okay.”

THIS IS AN ULTIMATE FUCKING DICK MOVE and is EXACTLY what happened here with this cinematic. but if i address it, it makes me sound like a bitch because my friend was just “concerned” for me (in the same way that me getting angry about having the Crossroads cinematic spoiled makes me look like a bitch because people were just trying to share something i liked with me).

he did not technically say “oh, well, vol’jin dies.” but by following his question with something like that, there is automatically an implication that “one of your favorite characters will die”, and at the time that was either thrall or vol’jin. so instead of just expecting a big all-out demon battle on the shores of the tomb of sargeras, i had an extremely major plot point—the death of a warchief, a major character, and one of my favorite characters—spoiled for me.

does that make sense?

i dont know what you mean by “8.2 spoilers were in promo material for months”. from blizzard? i dont think so. i even went to blizzcon last year and i’m going again this year. blizzard does teasers, not spoilers. here is an example:

Wowhead’s video straight up says the plot point in both the video title and in giant letters in the thumbnail, shows the moment that Thrall and Jaina are looking at one another, and marks it as 8.2 content. this is specifically to make it clickbaity. Blizzard’s official upload, however, shows thrall and jaina standing next to one another, mentions Baine only in the video description, has a searchable but still plot-ambiguous title (”Crossroads”), and is marked as a spoiler. THIS IS A TEASER. if i saw this thumbnail on my opening page, i’d go, oh shit they interact, better go play the game. it does not have RESCUING BAINE and thrall and jaina looking into each other’s eyes immediately plastered in my face.

so yeah, getting a bunch of DMs and pings and messages screaming “THRAINA IN THE NEW PATCH” “OMG SWAMP LOOK” “CANON IT’S CANON” with a screenshot of jaina’s hand on thrall’s arm sent to my inbox a dozen times less than 24 hours after the patch drops really fucking disappoints and spoils shit for me. i’ve been waiting over ten years (since ulduar) to see thrall and jaina interact in a cinematic, and you all really think the most ideal way for me to see it is via a bunch of fangirl spam? is that how YOU GUYS want to find out about it? why is it that you all get to play the game and watch the cinematic naturally or of your own volition but my first exposure gets to be like this? like come the hell on, guys.

to me, that isn’t “I want to share this with swamp because i know she’ll love it”; it’s “i want swamp to see this from me first” and that fucking skeeves me out. or there’s so much anxiety about wondering what my reaction will be and being unable to wait that they just force it on me and totally drain the moment of any emotional significance by removing it from its context. instead it appears as a detached screenshot instead of being the exciting conclusion to the scenario.

i dont want to have to go off the grid just to not have shit spoiled for me. In fact, in the Broken Shore spoiler case, that shit happened in person at a party where i had already been off the internet for a few days because my laptop was busted. so really it’s just about people respecting me lol, ive done everything i can do on my end to block out spoilers. ultimately it’s just about consent. like just fucking ask first if you can tell me or ask if i’ve done it. if we were all reading the same book you’d ask what chapter i was on; why is any other narrative any different?

Chapter Five: Apartment

After leaving your apartment, I feel this cold inside me…

The song droned on through Richie’s almost empty room as he slowly packed up boxes of things to take with him to college. Bill had helped him a little earlier, but he had to be home to pack his own things. Bill’s parents had helped him, of course, but Richie’s parents didn’t even bother, which he expected. Stan had already left for ASU since the schools start earlier over there, and Mike and Ben were busy packing their own things. Beverly had tried to come, but her dad had the day off so she wouldn’t dare sneak out. And Eddie…, well of course Eddie wouldn’t come.

This should be happy. He thought. College is supposed to be the best time in my life! He faked a small smile to himself, as if to convince himself that everything was okay, when he knew it wasn’t. It might never be. Then why am I so sad?

It howls away all through the market, it calls your name…

Richie opened his bedside drawer to find more things to pack up. His breathing stopped for a split second as he saw a picture frame. He picked it up and blew some dust off of it. He fondly gazed at the picture of him and Eddie, sitting on the grass next to the other Losers at their old high school at lunch; Richie kissing Eddie’s cheek while Eddie laughed at some unheard joke, his eyes closed into squints and mouth wide open, spread into that childish smile that Richie loved so much. He’d give anything to see it in person again. To hear him laugh….

You carved a boat to sail my shadow, now I walk alone.

Richie thought of the loneliness of walking to the Quarry alone to meet Bill, his shadow taking the place of Eddie now. His Eddie.

Only he wasn’t his Eddie anymore. He was no one’s Eddie; at least he hoped he wasn’t.

But sooner or later, this is bound to stop.

Richie dropped the picture frame as if it was hot coals, and watched it shatter on the wood floor beneath him. He stared at the shards of glass for a long time, his mind going absolutely blank, before eventually dropping to the ground and sitting amongst the broken glass, breaking down into tears at last. Richie felt like the shattered glass strewn all over the floor, he felt it in his very core. Richie Tozier was a broken man, and it was all his fault.

He held the frame to his chest, sobbing and cutting his fingers and legs with the sharp pieces of glass. But Richie couldn’t feel it; he could only feel the wave of heavy sadness that pressed on his chest. It felt like it was crushing him, and oh God it was crushing him; weighing him down like an anchor was tied to his foot and someone threw him in the ocean. They might as well have.

He had loved Eddie. Oh Jesus fucking Christ how he had loved and adored Eddie Kaspbrak. He would do absolutely anything for that kid…; except stay away from Stanley Uris.

He shook his head, as if shaking the thought straight out of it. He imagined the words spilling out of his ears like water after a hot summer’s day spent in the Derry public pool. He made a promise to himself that he wouldn’t look back, couldn’t look back anymore. He had to leave Derry. This tainted place of nightmares couldn’t have a hold on him any longer. His old stomping ground was also home to the Devil dressed in a clown suit, and that’s something he could never forget.

After leaving your apartment, I hit the coast…

Richie slammed his laptop lid abruptly, causing the music to come to a dead stop and silence to fill up the empty room. He felt as if he could just drown in it.

God, what have I done? He thought.

“All s-set, Rich?” Bill asked anxiously, smiling up at Richie, a smile they both knew was fake. The Losers didn’t really have a soft spot for Richie or Stan anymore after they found out, but they were scared Richie might just off himself if given the chance.

“I think so, Big Bill.” Richie laughed a laugh devoid of humor as he slammed the trunk of his car down with a thud.

He walked over to Bev and they exchanged somber glances before accosting each other into a tight hug. Bev wiped some tears out of her eyes before Richie could see, but he saw.

“Naw don’ get awl sappy on me, Miss Scawwwlet!” Richie drawled, getting in a good chuck before he went, but his voice wavered.

“I love you guys,” Richie said, quietly, almost like he was afraid that someone would hear him.

“We love you too.” Bev said as Bill gave him a sentimental pat on the back.

Richie looked over at the empty spot next to Bev longingly. All color drained from his face as he sighed dejectedly. Eddie was gone, and that was final. Richie would never forgive himself for that.

Bill noticed him looking and put a firm hand on his shoulder, snapping Richie out of the trance-like state. “Hey,” He said softly. “I’ll tell him you said goodbye.” He offered, and Richie’s lips slightly curved up in appreciation.

“Thanks, Billy.”

Richie couldn’t help but laugh as he got in his car and saw Bev and Bill waving, their arms wrapped around each other’s backs. Just like the Ma and Pa I never got. He thought, and chuckled to himself in the empty car.

But there was really nothing funny about it.

I never gave you a second chance to become my father. I thought it was not my place to decide but I was wrong. Im sorry for I got scared and hateful towards your dark side. I forgot how we all had one. Im sorry dad kase natiis kita. Im sorry kasi hanggang ngayon tinitiis pa din kita. I love you so much and I know I have hurt you so much. Every single time na maiisip ko of how guilty we are, i always comeback to the time when you hurt us. Pero kasi, mali yon, sobrang mali noon kase napatawad na kita and I think you’ve served your sentence. You admitted your mistakes and to be honest, It’s now all in the past. It left a very deep and noticeable scar but last time I checked, Scars are a way of telling a person that it is still capable of healing.

It scares me when I see myself in you because you let me see you as a failure but of course, you are more than that. You let that thought blind you and it blinded us too. It felt like I’m imprinted with something I can not change because that’s what got through me while I was growing up.

Never did we acknowledge that fact that we’ve forgiven you and forgiving you means giving you that chance.You withheld us using a wrong bonding medium. You used aggression when it could’ve been love. That’s why we’re so afraid to let you hold us again. Never kitang nabigyan ng chance kase di ko kaya ipagpalit yung comfort ko. Ganoon ako kaselfish. Ganon kami kaselfish. We’re so undeserving of your love now. I am a coward dad. Im sorry for not fighting for you. Every day I realize that and everyday I dont do anything about it. I wish I was a better daughter but I am not.I wish you were a better father but you’re not but I guess we could go pass that someday. I still hope for the day when I could also give what you deserve. You were just trying to love us in the way youknew how but you got lost. I hope someday we still get to see how happy we can be as a family and when that ‘someday’ comes, I sincerely hope it’s not yet too late.

I love you dad. I love you so much.

Letter To My Dad

Assalamualaikum Papa. How are you? I hope you got all my prayers for you. I’m trying my best to give as much as I can. Mummy is doing good, alhamdulillah and so is the rest of the family. Abang is getting so much better, you would be so proud of him. The babies miss you sometimes.. they would ask where you are and we would have to remind them that you are with Allah now. I’m doing okay.. I could be better. School is getting really hectic because exams are coming and yes, I will do my best to get good results so I can make you and mummy proud. Myra rindu papa everyday.. everytime myra ingat papa, myra tarus sedekahkan papa Fatihah and Ayat Kursi. Only Allah knows how much I miss you. I know I said im doing okay.. but sometimes when the I’m home alone, I can hear the silence and its so loud. Selalunya ada papa tidur in the living room with the television still on. Thats gone now and the living room is always empty. Usually during lunch time myra jalan to get food for the both us and you know what I regret? Never spending enough times eating with you on the same table. Now I rarely have lunch at home. Usually at 5pm, you would always knock on my door and tell me that you were leaving to pick up mummy and go to work for the night. I regret never giving enough energy to properly say goodbye to you before you left. Now those 5pm knocks are non existent.

So many things I never got to tell you before you left.. like how sorry I am about always fighting with mummy and that made you and mummy fight because you always took my side and you trusted me more than mummy trusts me. I also never got to tell you how sorry I am that you had to come down to bail me out of the customs office because I was stupid enough to say that those drinks were mine. I never got to tell you how sorry I am that I lied to you that night. I never got to tell you how sorry I am that you had to pay the fine for me. I never got to tell you how sorry I am for how angry I was at you for the next few weeks because you told me I couldn’t go to Jakarta or drive the car to school or go out of the house besides going to Uni. I’m so sorry that I acted like that. I wish I could take it all back but I can’t and myra have to accept saja and hope you forgive me. I’ll try my best to be good from now on, I’ll try and stay home more to be with mummy. I’ll try and not argue or fight with her because with everyone gone, she and I only have each other to lean on.

I hope you know how much of an amazing person you are Papa. You are the most patient man I’ve ever known and you loved mummy so much that you kept up with her and her big ego. You never lost your temper and I admire you so much for that. You were also the nicest man I know although you were quiet. You never said no when me and dorang abang asked if you could send us here or there. You never said no whenever we ask to balikan stuff. You never said no whenver we asked for money eventhough you barely had any money with you.. you would always. always give me whatever you had on you walaupun $1 saja papa ada. You never complained, never said much when mummy asks you to run errands.. you make me want to strive to be as patient as you and I hope Allah grants me that one day. I hope papa tau myra sayang papa... you always vouched for me and trusted me when I didnt even deserve it. You gave and bought me a lot of things over the years and I wish I thanked you enough for everything youve done for me. The most unforgettable memory I have with you is when you were leaving Manila and leaving me behind. We were outside of 7-11 arah my building and papa told me to take care and jangan beulah. You also said you’ll miss me and that you love me. You love me. I think you’ve only said that on our birthday cards and you never actually say it out loud to us. I will always cherish this particular memory and our time in Manila. That was our last trip together and there wont be one anytime soon..

Story 4

Prompt: “The murders, the fighting, everything that I remember. Is it real?” “No. We installed false memories in you. It was the only way we could ensure your compliance.”

“Zara, it’s time for breakfast,” I heard.

“I’m coming, dad,” I responded.

I grabbed my bookbag and I walked out of my bedroom and down the hall. I could hear the loud music coming from Axel’s room. I knocked on his door.

“What,” I heard as the music was turned down.

“Breakfast, Axe,” I said.

“I’ll be down in a bit,” he called.

I just nodded and continued on my way. I walked down the stairs and I could hear the giggling of my little sisters and brothers. I dropped my book bag by the front door and I walked into the kitchen. I saw my dad entertaining my sisters and brothers with his poor excuse of pancake art. I saw mom rushing hurriedly around the kitchen, gathering her things so that she could rush out the door to get to work. I smiled at her frantic running.

As I sat down at the kitchen island next to Jane, Max, Melody, and Ben, mom kissed dad and then proceeded to kiss all of us on the way out the door of the kitchen.

“MOM,” I heard Axel squeal loudly.

“See you tonight,” she called as we heard the door close.

I turned to look at dad and he had a dopey, lovey, mushy face. I knew that he loved mom very much, but I didn’t need to see it all of the time. I cleared my throat and he looked at me and grinned.

“Good morning, rosebud,” he said, “Could I interest you in some scrambled eggs and bacon?”

I looked at the clock and saw that it was 6:30 am. Axe and I had to be at school by 7:30 and it only takes Axe ten minutes to get there, but I knew he wanted to see his bandmates and his girlfriend, so I replied, “I’ll take two bacon sandwiches and an apple. I have to make sure that I am ready when Axe is so he doesn’t leave me behind.”

Dad just nodded and made my order and I made my lunch.

“Axel what would you like,” Dad asked.

“Same as Z, please,” Axe replied.

Dad handed me my bagged sandwiches and Axe’s sandwiches and I kissed him on the cheek.

“Love you, dad,” I whispered in his ear.

Then I walked over to Axe and said, “We’re ready to go.”

He stood and then said, “Later.”

“Have a good day you two,” dad called out as we walked to the front door.

When we got to school I gave Axe his breakfast and then I left him. He didn’t say anything to me, as per usual. He, being a senior, didn’t want anything to do with his sister who is a lowly freshman. I rolled my eyes as he headed towards the group that was sitting on the raised flower bed right in front of the school. I followed a pace and a half behind Axe. He had told me my first day of high school that I wouldn’t associate with him during the day and that even though his friends knew me I wasn’t allowed to say anything to them.

“Do you have to drive the robo-sis,” one of his friends asked.

I just ignored them.

“Unfortunately. If I don’t the rents get shirty with me,” Axe confirmed.

“She is such a drag. I don’t get how such a lame person could be your sister,” Axe’s girlfriend said in her high pitched baby voice. (Think Kristen Chenoweth)

“She isn’t even pretty,” said another of Axe’s friends.

I hated his friends. I kept walking to the front door. I was low-key livid. My own brother wasn’t even sticking up for me. But I kept my face quite blank as I made it to the door.

“Yeah, she is so fat. No one would ever want her,” Axe’s girlfriend stated as if it were fact.

I went inside and I kept going to my favorite spot in the school. I was in one of the old lecture halls. It was one of the halls that are no longer in use due to it not having enough room for people. It was a room that was almost never used. I sat in one of the plush red velveteen seats and as I ate my breakfast I cried. I hated my brother sometimes. I couldn’t understand what his problem was. But I knew that if I narc’ed on him, that he would make my life a living hell. As I finished my breakfast, I pulled out my sketchbook and I began to sketch. I lost myself in the sketching.

“There you are Z,” I heard.

I looked up and I saw my friend Cooper coming into the hall. I smiled. I was glad to see him and secretly in love with Cooper. He was tall, big; line-backer big – muscles, red hair; fashionably mussed, and big green eyes looking at me. He, of course, was carrying his book bag, gym bag, and his lacrosse stick. He dropped most of that at the door to the hall and headed in my direction.

“Morning, Coop. How are you,” I asked as he sat down next to me.

He just sat looking at me. I knew that he was reading me in the only way a best friend/secret crush can.

“I’m ok, but who made you cry this morning. No don’t tell me, I have three guesses and the first two don’t count,” he replied.

I looked away and sighed.

“Axel is a dick and his friends and harpy of a girlfriend are just as bad, if not worse. I hope you don’t believe anything they say,” Cooper raged.

He put his hand on my shoulder and turned me back to look at him.

“Z, you are an amazing girl. You are so wonderful that you are way above them. Don’t let anyone make you feel less,” he exclaimed looking into my eyes.

My heart fluttered and I felt like if I wasn’t careful I would spill just how much I really liked Coop. I smiled at him. Then we started chatting. He was telling me about his lacrosse practice and not that I really understood the rules and what he meant by the plays, but I did appreciate that we were talking about normal things.

“You know, you are my real best friend. You are so strong,” Cooper said randomly.

“Where did that come from,” I questioned.

“Well, unfortunately, some of my teammates have seen us hanging out together and were really speaking badly about you and I fought with a couple of the guys,” He complained.

I felt my internal emotions and my inner voice begin the degrading comments and emotions.

“You shouldn’t get into fights over me. We can hang out in secret like we are to…” I started.

“WHAT?! NO?! I will not let those assholes pull us apart. You are my girl! You are the one that will let me vent about stuff. You are the most beautiful girl inside and out at this school. I will not let them ruin what we have. You are my rock! So us being on the D.L. is not going to happen, ever,” He hollered.

I put my hands up in surrender. Internally I was still doubting, but there was this naggy part of me that hoped that something might come of this that I would really like. But Coop wasn’t like that.

“Okay, whatever you say. Just don’t fight anymore,” I consoled.

Just as he was about to respond the bell rang and we had to get to class.

It was lunch time and I was headed to the lecture hall, my favorite quite place at school. I entered the hall and I began to read a book and eat my lunch. I stayed in the hall for my entire lunch. It had been so peaceful. I didn’t have to worry about anyone making fun of me or staring at me.

As I was headed back to the Art studio, I heard screaming and saw students running. I heard gunshots. I blanked and froze. Then I saw the students with guns. I turned and headed to the nearest room, which unfortunately for me was my empty lecture hall. I felt my cell phone in my pocket vibrate. I knew that I had to get to safety before I answered it. But as I was turning the corner to get to the lecture hall, I saw two other students with handguns. I had no-where to go. There weren’t many rooms in my end of the hallway, because of the lunchroom and kitchens. So I hurried back into the lunchroom and I quietly snuck into the kitchens and I hid. I could hear the dishwashers going and water running. I didn’t hear anyone speaking. I took out my phone, dimmed the screen so it wasn’t full brightness, and I looked at my alerts.

There was a text message from the building principal telling us that we needed to remain in lockdown because of four gunmen. He also said that the police had been contacted and parents had been contacted as well.

There was a text from my mom and dad. They were both asking me if I was all right. I knew that I couldn’t call them, so I sent them a text back.

There was a text from Coop.

-Are you safe? Where r u??

I texted back: Im in the cafeteria kitchen.

A quick response returned to me: -WHAT?! There aren’t any locks on the doors to the kitchens. Please tell me that you are at least hiding in a closet or a cooler.

I texted back: No time. Both sets of gunmen were headed this way. I was cornered…nowhere else to go. I don’t know where the coolers/closets are, so I have to be very quiet and I am hiding.

The PA system crackled to life. I could hear some screams and gunshots over the PA. I could feel myself pale.

Then I heard a voice, “Good afternoon Deville High. Excuse the interruption. Would someone send Zara McMahon to the office? She has an early dismissal.”

I saw the Lunch ladies looking at me. I was wide-eyed.

Then another took over, “If you send her down we will allow the rest of the school to go free. We just want her.”

My phone vibrated with two text messages. The first one was from a number I didn’t recognize and it said: If you don’t come down to the office, we will have to go in search of you and kill anyone who is hiding you. Do you want blood on your hands? Because that is what will happen. I promise that we will find your friend Cooper Grayson first. Give yourself up.

The second text was from Cooper: Don’t you dare move! I will never forgive you!

I texted back: They said they would come for you and kill anyone who hinders them. I can’t let that happen. I’m sorry. I have to do it. The lunch ladies are still here and they don’t deserve to die because I was too cowardly to face these jerks.

A response came to me quickly: Zara, please. I beg of you. Don’t do this.

I answered: Should I survive this, I have something to tell you. I’ll see you later, Coop.

I sent off my last text and I turned off my phone. I took a breath and I looked at the lunch ladies. Then I stood up, put my phone in my back pocket of my jeans. Then I began to head for the door of the cafeteria. I felt like I was in one of those pivotal movie moments. When the protagonist is walking to confront the antagonist and the dramatic music is playing in the background. Although this was much too real for me and there was no soundtrack for me to walk to.

As I walked up the hallway towards the office, I could hear muffled yelling. I heard several gunshots. I felt upset. I hated that these terrorists were taking out people in the office. I hurried up my steps and as I got closer to the office I felt all of my fear melt away. I knew that I had to delay these monsters so that the police could get here and take care of them. I turned down the main hallway and I saw the doors to the main office. My heart was thundering beneath my breastbone. Each step I took felt like I was walking through molasses. Time felt like it was slowing to a snail’s pace.

I entered and I saw the four gunmen and I saw a fifth just sitting in the principal’s chair like he was the king of the school.

“Well, well, well, look who is here boys. The fat girl has become brave,” one of the gunmen said laughing.

“Oh dear. Well, it looks like we can’t shoot her boyfriend,” another gunman said sarcastically sad.

“Boys,” the terrorist in the chair said, “Get on with it.”

I recognized that voice. I heard that voice every day.

“Axel?! What,” I said shocked.

But before I could finish my question, I heard a gun go off, and I felt a pain in my left knee. I fell to the floor in pain.

“Awwww robo-sis has figured us out. I guess we are gonna finally get rid of her,” gloated one of the gunmen who turned out to be my brother’s cronies.

“Let them listen,” Axel said.

I looked at him and I felt betrayed. I wanted to scream at him and tell him that he was a fool. What was his issue? But I couldn’t I was too enveloped in my pain that I couldn’t deal.

I heard the PA system click on.

“So guess who showed up to the office. That’s right. It’s your girl Zara McMahon. She decided to save you all with giving up her life. So Zara, tell them your last words,” one of Axel’s friends said as one of the other friends dragged me over to where the PA handheld mic was.

“Speak, ugly,” the friend said as he hit me in the head with the mic.

“Please,” I gasped in pain.

“Please what,” that friend grinned while saying, “Oh I love it when you beg. It gets me so hard. Beg some more.”

Internally I was disgusted with his ugly words. I was hit again and I groaned in pain.

“I’m waiting,” he demanded.

I was still trying to catch my breath. I looked around the office through hazy vision and saw that the secretaries and councilors were dead and the principal was knocked out. I heard the gun go off and I screamed as it ripped through my right shoulder. I could feel my vision begin to blur more.

“Nope, you aren’t allowed to pass out yet,” he said as he slapped my face, “Get me the alcohol and pour it on her wounds. That will wake her up.”

A few minutes felt like an eternity but then my whole body felt like it was lit on fire. I screamed. I couldn’t hold it back.

“There she is,” he grinned and said.

“Enough Dev,” I heard Axel state, “Finish it. We’re going to have company shortly.”

I didn’t see the response but I did feel my hair get pulled so I wasn’t slumped over and the mic was shoved into my face.

“Last words,” Dev said.

I took a breath and looked right in Axel’s eyes and said, “Axel McMahon, Devon Newton, Rafe Ainsley, Jaxon Willis, and Chase Tobin. I’m sorry. I love you.”

I was promptly thrown to the floor and I felt the rain of bullets hit my body. My hearing muffled and it was hard to breathe. Dying wasn’t easy. I was gasping for breath and choking on my own blood. Finally, my vision blacked and I felt all of the tension leave my body.

I heard beeping. Steady beeping. I wiggled my fingers and felt something on my pointer finger. I opened my eyes slowly and I felt a nose cannula wrapped around my head feeding me oxygen. I saw that I was in a hospital bed. I tried to pick up my hand and found that I was shackled to the bed. I heard the door open and I saw two armed men, a nurse, and a doctor.

“Welcome back Miss Erye,” the doctor said.

“That’s not my name,” I croaked out in a lower octave voice.

I was shocked at just how low and sexy my voice was sounding. It was probably from being unconscious.

“You might be feeling a bit confused. Your name is Lillith Erye, Mistress of Death. Or at least that is what our files say you are called,” the doctor informed me.

“No, my name is Zara McMahon. I was in a school shooting. I was shot several times. The school was Deville High,” I said slightly panicked.

“I’m sorry Miss Erye, but you are in a black facility after Dark Warden stopped your dastardly plan and captured you. We put you into a simulation to rehab you,” the doctor stated.

“The murders, the fighting, everything that I remember. Was it real,” I asked devastated.

“No. We installed false memories in you. It was the only way we could ensure your compliance,” the doctor replied.

I turned my head away and cried.

Can I force insurance to pay for rental car if they take too long to make a decision after assessment?

First off I am in CA and the other liable insurance is Farmers or 21st century. For some reason Farmers is handling the claim. Ok, so I was in an accident in which the other party was at fault. As such their insurance has accepted liability. I have already taken my car get an assessment by one of their representatives at a repair place. But do to their stupidity in a few instances, its taking a long time for them to make a decision as to repair my car or call it a total loss.
