i.
When you wake up, he’s not there. The side of the bed he sleeps on is empty. No indent in the pillow or the mattress. Instead, he leaves you a calendar, and he is on the cover. And every single page. Every Jeremy Bearimy.
You don’t hesitate to hang it on the wall of your bedroom.
Then you remind yourself that you love him. The tape you stole from Mindy St. Claire that’s definitely not Cannonball Run II—you’re not that creeped out by it anymore. You said you love him first. You didn’t expect him to say it back.
He did. Hearing those words again, those three words, keeps you warm somehow in a place that’s already eternally warm. Even though the sun doesn’t exist. You’re still unsure of how this all works.
You turn off the T.V. and slip the tape back into its case.
ii.
It’s a few mornings later that you’re starting to miss him. You avoid all of the places you’ve been to together, especially the places you went to before he walked through that door. You don’t want to be reminded of him, of what you had, at least right now. Mourning a loss that you wish never came.
You find yourself in your bed for most hours, holding the pillow where his head would be close to you. Maybe you can start by changing the sheets. Or the layout of the whole house. Anything to just make it yours. Not something you share, shared, with him.
For some time, you contemplate this, wondering if you should change anything at all. If changing the interior of the house is going to help you feel any better. You groan and stare up at the ceiling, then over at his face that’s plastered on the calendar. The shine in his smile, his entire face really.
He would want you to do this, right? He would want you to grow and discover yourself outside of him. Do things without him. And if that means flipping the house upside down, you’re going to flip the forking house upside down.
You push the comforter away from you and dangle your legs over the edge of the bed. Your sock-covered feet barely touch the carpet. “Janet?”
With a light bing, Janet appears in front of you—the Janet you’ve learned to appreciate during your time in the fake Good Place. The Janet that has grown just as much as you have, yet still wears that purple vest and skirt, and blue patterned blouse. Like she doesn’t have any other clothes she can wear, like she can’t magically change her clothes at will.
Despite the many reboots this Janet had, and the upgrades that came along with them, that same smile paints her lips.
She waves to you. “Hi, there, Eleanor. Is there something you need?”
“I would like to reconstruct the house,” you say, gesturing for her to follow you into the kitchen. Days you’ve spent drafting up a blueprint, something that you learned from Michael during the time you took his spot as Good Place architect.
On the kitchen island is the blueprint, a new design for the house. There is a rock at each corner to keep the blueprint from folding in on itself. And next to the blueprint is a bowl meant for cereal, to remind yourself to eat.
While you worked on the blueprint, you sometimes forgot to eat, too focused on drawing lines and figuring out the ideal layout for your house. A house that just fits you now. A brand new house where there is no trace left of him. It’ll make it easier for you to move forward, until you’re ready.
You don’t know when you will be ready, but you’re not going to force it.
In one bing, the blueprint appears in Janet’s hands. “Are you sure you want to do this?”
“Why wouldn’t I be sure? I asked for you here. I’m ready.”
...
It’s like breathing in fresh air. The atmosphere that you live in is entirely new, and you were right: you feel so much better.
The kitchen is smaller. You don’t need a lot of room, and you don’t really cook, not when you can ask for Janet to conjure up something for you. Or you can cross through that green door and go to your favorite restaurant and not have to pay. You know that past Eleanor, before she was crushed by a line of grocery carts, would’ve loved that.
Your bedroom is a bit bigger than it was, maybe because you’ve downgraded to a full-sized bed that was previously a queen. It can still fit two, if you happen to fall in love again, but of that, you aren’t sure. There’s a love seat on the other side of the room next to a walk-in closet. On the door, hanging there, is his calendar. You can never get rid of it. That, it always stays.
Janet gives you a Nintendo Switch that has virtual console—for nostalgia purposes—as a house-warming gift. You tell her that she can stop by whenever she wants to play. All the games will be easy for her, being a vessel of knowledge, but she probably doesn’t care. And she might kick your ash a few times in Mario Kart. Well, any game you play with her actually. You don’t mind. As an apology, she summons a plate of shrimp for you.
In the living room, on the couch, you hold that plate of shrimp. “You know, you don’t have to give me things every time I lose. I mean, it’s great.” You bite into a piece of shrimp and hum in content. “Third isn’t that bad. Whenever Michael joins us, he always gets in eighth. That’s when you give apology food.”
Janet nods, and you set the plate down on the coffee table in front of you. “Maybe we should tell him that it’s better to have more acceleration over speed on his kart,” she says, playing around with the back bumpers of her Animal Crossing controller.
“Nah.” You press A to bring you back to the title screen. “Another cup?” Before Janet can get a word out, you continue. “No using your Janet powers this time. It’s cheating.” You huff and select ‘two-player race’.
iii.
You and Janet revisit the Good Place, or what it once was. A town with frozen yogurt shops on every corner. Literally every single corner. All frozen yogurt, which does get old after a while.
The buildings and frozen yogurt shops bright and colorful, maybe even too colorful. A ‘happy’ town that could never be assumed as the Bad Place. And that little fountain. You sit on the ledge with her, your favorite Good Place frozen yogurt flavor in hand. She served it for you. Perfect swirls and just the right amount of toppings.
You close your eyes as you take in each bite of the tasty treat with gummy bears and waffle cone crumbs.
With the food variety that the actual Good Place has, you haven’t touched frozen yogurt. Not since you got there. Returning to it, the odd flavors that scale all the way up the wall of the frozen yogurt stores, brings a sense of calm, somehow. A feeling that was absent after Chidi went through that door. Arc. Door? Whatever. But it’s not what he described, when he knew that it was his time.
For you, your life in the afterlife isn’t complete. Not yet.
You just now realize how big the serving of this frozen yogurt is, and the cups of frozen yogurt in the past, before reaching the salvation of the Good Place, and put the cup down beside you after eating half of it. Full. “I think I needed this,” you tell Janet.
She smiles, a softer one than her usual. “I know. Well, I know a lot of things. Would you like a coin to toss into the fountain? That is what humans do, right? To make a wish?”
“I would love one.”
A nickel appears in her palm, and she hands it to you. “Make a wish, Eleanor.”
You balance the nickel between your fingers and allow yourself time to think of a wish. But how can you make a wish when the Good Place can give you anything you could ever want without a wish? It can’t bless you with a new love, what you’ve been craving lately because you can’t feel that with him anymore. Love that you are starting to miss. The afterlife and Earth are the same in that regard; you have to find love on your own. Does that mean it’s the only thing you can wish for?
“Okay. I think I have one.” You turn a bit to partially face the fountain and toss the coin in. It plops into the water, doesn’t make much of a splash.
Janet watches in awe and summons another coin. She drops it into the fountain. “Maybe both of our wishes will come true.”
You raise an eyebrow. “What did you wish for, Janet?”
She giggles and stands up, offering her hand to you. “If I tell you, it might not come true.”
“Yeah. I forgot about that. I kinda think it’s stupid though.” You grab your frozen yogurt and take her hand. “How do we know if that’s real? You should know, knowledge not-lady.”
“It’s not something people know. It’s a belief. I believe in it. The coin I threw into the fountain will grant my wish.”
Back to the green door, you walk, throwing out your half-eaten frozen yogurt on the way. You also stop at a few places to reminisce. Your old house in all its scary clown glory, the train station that doesn’t lead anywhere. The large pond with that bridge. Or maybe it’s a lake. Some body of water.
The area of green and the stage where all of the announcements happened. The fake talk shows and awful book signings. Really awful book signings. Except, on the grass that never grows, there aren’t any chairs. It’s empty.
iv.
Friday nights are movie nights. Nights where you pick a movie Janet has never seen. Of course, she knows about them and their general plot, but she’s truly watching the movie for the first time. A little light bulb glows behind her eyes at each moment that happens on screen, and it warms you. More than the blanket wrapped around you.
Less than Janet’s arm wrapped around you. Your head on her shoulder. Every now and then, she strokes your hair, your short locks that tangle in her fingers.
You thought, after entering this position, you would fall asleep, but Janet talking through the movie and asking you questions keeps you awake. Hell, she’s talking so much that part way through, you had to turn on subtitles because all you could hear, can hear, is her.
She’s trying to understand. The different actions of the characters, why they make them. She searches her ‘knowledge-base’, you call it, and that’s the only time it gets quiet. You’re not sure you like the quiet—quiet meaning she’s not speaking—and would rather have Janet’s voice fill the space. It has a soothing nature. That’s all.
That’s all.
...
The credits roll, and you’re stuck, comfortable. You sink deeper into Janet’s embrace, cross your arm over her and hook your hand at her waist. You don’t pause the movie, exit, find another one to watch because you don’t want to let go. You don’t want to lose this, whatever the fork you’re feeling.
Is it fuzzies? The weird flips in your stomach that people call butterflies? Whenever her fingers touch past the rolled-up sleeves of your plaid shirt, gracing skin. Only for a moment. Then finding the fabric again.
She leans her head against yours, cheek to hair. “Do you want to watch another one?” she asks.
Lips to hair.
Tingles vibrate through veins, from the center of blood flow to your hands. You can’t speak. You can’t answer her. When you try, nothing comes out. She kissed your head, and your whole system is shutting down. Collapsing in on itself. Kind of like Janet after her first reboot. No thoughts, head empty, except for cacti.
“Eleanor?” She rubs your arm. “Are you okay?”
You hum a ‘yes’. Or try to. It sort of sounded like a weird whimper. Or just a really high-pitched hum that doesn’t match your voice register at all. You shake it off, ignore it. Pretend it never happened. Move on.
Next movie.
v.
You asked her on a date, and, for a second, or more than a second actually, got nervous because Janet seemed confused. She wondered what the date was supposed to mean. She knows that friends go on dates and that romantic partners go on dates. So which was it?
She ranted, one of her cute little rants, analyzing knowledge and data. Referencing pop culture and society—as much as she could understand of it.
You don’t remember how long she went before you told her to stop. Grabbed her hand and tilted your head to the side. By that alone, without having to explain, she figured it out.
“I’ll go on a date with you, Eleanor.”
...
At your favorite cafe in Arizona, thanks to the green doors, you sit at a two-person table and wait for her to show. Come through that door, not the green one, but the door of the little cafe.
The cafe is outside your hometown, or was outside your hometown before you died. You’re not sure where it is now, if it’s still standing. How many years have passed on Earth. If it was torn down like that restaurant you got sick at that one time when you were a kid. Your mom told you then that you getting sick there was the reason why it was torn down. Honestly, you believe it.
It’s Arizona. You had seen crazier things. Not as crazy as Florida, though. Jason won that point. And every other point.
You order yourself a latte, and just as it gets to you, the bell of the cafe dings. Janet, wearing a different outfit for once, one you recognize from one of the reboots. A brown vest and skirt with a white blouse with small polka-dots. Her hair is tied half-up. She holds her thumb in her opposite fist, but lets it go to wave to you.
Soon, one of those hands is in yours over the table. Her not-skin soft and warm. You brush your thumb over her knuckle. Conversation lingers, random things because she knows everything about you. Or you ask about her. The history of Janets.
“I don’t know what would’ve happened if the judge ‘erased the Earth’,” she says, giving your hand a squeeze. “But I’m glad that she didn’t. I don’t know if I would exist ever again. Or if this would’ve ever happened. If the Good Place would’ve been fixed. I try not to think about it.”
“You might’ve not met Jason. Me.” You bow your head. “You’re right. Let’s not think about it.”
Twenty minutes or so you spend in the cafe before you leave, hand-in-hand. You show her around this little town, a town you wished you came to more. The family-run shops and the park a few blocks away. You lead Janet there, to the park you always attempted to drag your mom to.
With her, you walk the path in the comfort of silence. At least between you. On playgrounds and grass fields, kids play, made-up games or tag. You rarely got that, at least when you were with your parents, because they pushed you and your needs aside. But this isn’t real anyway. Just an image the Good Place created for you.
Yet somehow, it still hits. A light slap to the face.
Janet stops, so you stop. You don’t know why, but once she opens her mouth, asks if you’re okay, you realize that your hand was tensed up. Muscles tight.
“Can I take you somewhere?”
...
In elementary school, when you would stay over at a friend’s house for multiple days at a time and come to this little Arizona town, you had a secret spot. A tree stump in the woods of the park, and in the rings of the stump marks your initials. Marked, because it might not be there anymore. Washed away or faded overtime. Or just gone.
“I told my friends that this place was where I wanted to have my first kiss,” you say, approaching the lone tree stump surrounded by alive and growing trees. “Of course, that didn’t happen. I think maybe I forgot about it. I mean, I was just a kid then. I had dreams and fantasies. I played games where I ruled all of Arizona.” You kneel down in front of the stump and trace your fingers over the faint initials that rest there.
Janet laughs. “That’s very Eleanor Shellstrop of you.” She holds her hand out to you to help you up, and you accept. She takes your other hand, too. “I don’t think it’s a silly thing to dream about. A special moment in a place that makes you happy.”
You glance around you, at the tree stump, the almost too perfect leaves that carry wind. Or today, a warm breeze. Memories flood you. Your friends saving you from some pretend monster. You were the princess, and the girl you’re pretty sure you had a little crush on then was the prince. A knight that helped you down from the tree you climbed up as your own way to escape the monster.
You cried so hard that day because you wanted it to be as real as it could be. You were actually a distraught princess that needed to be rescued. And now, you’re just a girl from Arizona that saved the universe. Changed the afterlife for the better. You’re a different person. You make things you want a reality instead of dreaming of it. Instead of pretending.
That means you can make the kiss real, too.
You guide Janet’s hands to your waist, tugging her closer, while your own link behind her neck. “Is this okay?”
“Yes. It’s more than okay, Eleanor.” She leans forward to press her forehead to yours. Noses, lips, inches apart. “I think I love you. We’ve spent so much time together, and I’m enjoying every second of it, even beating you at Mario Kart.”
You giggle. “I knew that you getting first place every single time wasn’t luck! You were using your Janet powers even after I told you not to.”
“Guilty. When we get home, I’ll make sure to give you extra apology shrimp.”
You’re looking forward to it. Home. With Janet. Shrimp, so much shrimp. And rounds and rounds of Mario Kart until you grow tired and fall asleep in her arms. Oh, woof. “I think I love you, too.” Pause. Exhale. Your hands settle on her shoulders. “Can I kiss you?”
“You can kiss me. Right here. I would like to be kissed, very much, yes,” Janet says, pulling away just a bit, enough to see you.
Enough for you to see her. The light in her eyes. The freckles that dot her cheeks and nose. Quiet, but noticeable at a close distance. A distance that becomes not existent, lips on lips. You cup her face, gentle.
She doesn’t taste of anything, her lips, like you might’ve imagined at some point. During one of the hundreds of reboots. Or several of the reboots. Despite that, there’s something about them that captures you. A pink fire burning beyond your skull. They’re perfect. Feel perfect. Just like she is.
The kiss is short, shorter than you would’ve preferred. But you’re letting Janet take the lead, and she ends it after a few seconds to hug you. She brings your head to her chest and whispers another ‘I love you’.
No ‘I think’.
vi.
“I never told you this, but what I wished for came true.” You pause the game of Mario Kart and lean back on the couch. Eyes meet. “You know, back at the fountain.”
It’s been a few Jeremy Bearimys since that day in the woods of an Arizona park. Left in the Good Place, it’s just you and Janet. Michael now living through his life on Earth, Tahani making tests, and eventually designing Good Place neighborhoods. You get to see her sometimes, but not often enough. You’ve sent her postcards to all the places you went to with Janet, and she congratulated you on your new found relationship, as weirded out as she might be about it—she still hasn’t quite processed Janet’s relationship (and marriage), to Jason.
Janet sets her controller down and reaches out to twirl a strand of your hair, then retracts her hand. “It did?” She nods to herself and does that thing when she thinks. When her nose crinkles and she hums, a long, drawn out hum. When she tilts her head, then opens her mouth in an ‘o’ shape. “Oh. I believe mine did, too. What was your wish?”
You turn to face her, bringing your legs up on to the couch. “I wished to find love again. What about you? Not telling me did make your wish come true, huh?”
“Yeah.” She looks down at her lap, her thumb held in her opposite hand as it always is. “I wished to never be alone. I’m not alone. You’re still here, with me.”
“And I’m not going anywhere, babe.”

Pfizer’s ‘Sensitive’ Document Reveals Alarming Facts About Trial Subjects
Tumblr media
"This is the latest installment of my ongoing investigation into the court-ordered release of Pfizer’s trove of documents, which the FDA relied on to grant emergency use authorisation for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, back in December 2020. A particular document that stood out to me in the latest July 1, Pfizer data dump, is the 3611-page document entitled, ‘C4591001-fa-interim-narrative-sensitive.’ It contains pertinent information on hundreds of Pfizer’s clinical trial subjects who, whether due to death, serious adverse events, pregnancy, COVID-19 or just ‘no longer meeting eligible criteria,’ were withdrawn from the trial. The document also includes revealing narrative comments for subjects in both the placebo group and those administered either a single or two-dose BNT162b2 during Pfizer’s pivotal C4591001 trial, conducted in multiple sites spanning, South Africa, Argentina and the US…" 125742_S1_M5_5351_c4591001-fa-interim-narrative-sensitiveDownload Read the full article

The Bookkeeper – Chapter 8
Chapter 8: Nihilism and the Death of Art (I)
pairings: logan/patton (logicality), roman/virgil (prinxiety)  words: 3611 chapter warnings: mild swearing, nihilism, existential crisis, arguments, implied deaths/”ghosts” chapter summary: the reunion episode
[read on ao3] [masterlist]
< previous chapter
Fray and Far Fables dwelled in silence for a week. Logan kept himself busy with writing, but worked on everything except for his speech. Instead, he scrawled questions in the margins of his drafts, annotating his work in the hopes that it’d meet Virgil Aries’ careful eye.
He knew he should have let it go ever since Roman’s breakdown—the deadline for his drafted speech was fast approaching, after all—but he couldn’t help it. Part of him truly believed that if Roman saw how much he wanted this, he’d change in his mind.
Logan underlined a few words of his annotations, narrowing his eyes. Blue sparks trailed his writing.
Roman had to change his mind.
Logan sighed, looking over at Virgil Aries’ book sitting on his counter, closed. He used to think it was taunting him, but now it felt like it was begging him for anything, anything, anything.
He hadn’t seen Roman much in the past few days, but he made sure that the book sat in Roman’s line of sight, just as much as it sat in his. But still, Roman hid in the shadows between each book. He didn’t even come out for Patton, who had only visited once or twice, as if he was a child walking into the middle of their parents’ feud.
Logan crumbled a sticky note in his hand and flicked it off the counter, a trail of blue magic shooting it straight into the trash can.
“Oh isn’t this quite the show.”
Logan blinked. Sitting on Virgil Aries’ book was Roman, magically there with no trace of entrance.
“I...how did you...”
Roman snapped his fingers, and a spark of red fizzled out like a fading sparkler. Logan abandoned the current point of intrigue almost immediately, and settled for the next.
“Where have you been?”
“I’ve been bookkeeping.” Roman shot him a glare. “That's all I do.”
Logan winced.
“Roman, I want to talk to you, about what I said–”
“Already forgotten, Specs.”
“ Please just...just hear me out. Okay?”
Roman opened his mouth to protest, but it eventually thinned into a tense line. Logan took a deep breath, closing his eyes and pushing up his glasses.
“I’m sorry about what happened in the book nook,” Logan murmured. “I...I was being too eager.”
“You were being unrealistic, Logan.”
“I just don’t think it is unrealistic.” Logan sighed. “I...I know that it is a lot to ask for. And I discredited you a lot that day, and I just want you to know that what I said...it isn’t reflective of what I think about you, Roman. I think the world of you.”
Roman softened, Logan could tell, but he did his best not to show it.
“...Go on.”
Logan let a small smile slip.
“That’s why I think we can do this, Roman. I know you are apprehensive, but I want to work through that with you. And if we can perfect this, it opens up so many possible avenues for the state of research as we know it. We could contribute so much , Roman.”
A pause. Roman hopped off the closed copy of Virgil Aries’ book and floated off the counter, flying slowly along the shelves. He ran his hand across the spines of the books.
“Why do you want to meet Virgil?” Roman asked quietly.
Logan found himself taken aback.
“I...there’s so many reasons, Roman. You know I could go on for days about his work–”
“But why him? ” Roman stopped mid-air and turned around to stare at Logan. “Why do you want to hear it from him?”
It was only then that Logan saw a glint of red in Roman's irises, buried beneath a mix of tiredness and hope. He had seen both before, but never together.
Logan frowned, face scrunching up in thought.
“There’s knowledge that needs to be explored, even just a little,” he finally said. “And I know Virgil Aries had more to say. I’m sincere in my intentions, Roman — I want to finish the thoughts he wanted to explore.”
Roman looked at Logan, almost defeated. The red glow around him dimmed to the point where it dropped him slightly. Logan jolted forward, as if ready to catch him, but Roman lifted himself back up with a heavy sigh.
“You used to do that a lot, you know.” Roman smiled, yet it felt hollow. “As a kid, you used to finish everyone’s sentences. You always seemed to know what to say; you always seemed to know every answer. So...seeing you like this puzzles me, I suppose.”
“What are you saying, Roman?”
Roman closed his eyes and floated back to the counter, sitting on Virgil Aries’ book once more.
“They say that the desire to know– truly know– everything about anything runs deep in one’s veins. And like any sort of power, it can become...well, overpowering.”
Roman opened his eyes and looked up at Logan.
“What I’m saying is that this will change things, Logan. You deal with a greater power than what I am exerting. You deal with the past and you deal with knowledge: both the reaffirming kind and the new, hidden kind– the one that lays in unexplored realms.”
“Roman, what are you–”
“I’m scared, Logan,” Roman blurted out. The air grew thick and the shop became quiet. Roman rubbed the bridge of his nose, ducking his head, almost embarrassed. “I’m...I’m just scared.”
Logan softened.
“Who wouldn’t be?” Logan held out his hand against the counter, palm open for Roman to land, as he always did. “But fear underlies every pursuit, yet the pursuit itself is worth it. It always is.”
Roman looked at Logan’s hand, looked down at the book, and took a deep breath.
“You’re a nerd, you know that?” Roman floated off the book and towards Logan’s hand. “You are the biggest nerd, and I hate what you’re about to make me do because of your whole...nerd thing.”
Logan’s smile only grew. And when Roman landed on his open palm, sparks of blue and red fizzled together, leaving a second-long burst of purple; then the blue grew like small tides of smoke and washed over the red.
(As it was always meant to do.)
Logan stood at the front counter, flipping through his drafts in his hand. Patton, who Logan had called for moral support, stood alongside Logan. He tapped his foot quietly as Roman scanned the pages of Virgil Aries’ book.
“Okay, listen up,” Roman said, not breaking his stare from the pages beneath him. “Before we do this, I gotta lay down some ground rules.”
“Oh, wonderful,” Logan said dryly. “I feel like a child on a field trip.”
Roman looked up and narrowed his eyes at him. Logan gulped.
“I mean...go on. I quite thoroughly enjoy rules.”
“Me too!” Patton spoke up. “Rules rule! ”
Roman smiled wryly and nodded, continuing on with his reading.
“So first off, do not touch anything. Not only am I going to be putting a lot of energy into creating a physical manifestation of Virgil Aries’ soul, but also my magic has been a bit rusty as of late. So this book nook is going to be extremely fragile. Think of it like a house of cards: one wrong move and the whole thing is going to fall apart.”
“Got it.”
“Also, you can’t touch Virgil Aries, you can’t tell him that he’s in a book nook or make any reference to the fact that he’s dead, and you can’t give him anything. On top of the whole ‘fragile book nook’ thing, the entirety of his soul isn’t really in the book. Remember, there are many parts of a soul, and since Virgil’s life is a single fragment of that soul, it is still not fully him; you wouldn’t want to confuse the poor guy, the whole thing will fall apart. Plus, most of his soul is in the astral plane, so anything you’d try to give him would probably wind up there too — and there’s no ‘lost and found’ box in the astral plane.
Patton blinked and slowly, but hesitantly, nodded. Logan smiled and shook his head, patting Patton’s shoulder.
“And finally–” Roman stared at the papers in Logan’s hand– “you can’t stay for too long.”
Logan’s eyes darted up to meet Roman’s.
“What do you mean? You and Patton stay in the other book nooks for hours on end–”
“You’re different,” Roman snapped. A pause. Logan tilted his head. Roman cleared his throat.
“I– I mean... it’s different. It’s different...for you.” He crossed his arms and huffed. “Look, I don’t have to explain myself to you.”
“...You do have to explain it to me.” Logan waved the papers at Roman. “I have so many questions for him, it’s going to at least take an hour to walk through my first draft– I even devised my own interview with him with several questions and–”
“No, Logan. It’s– It’s my job to protect you, and I– I swore to your grandfather which means this is already a huge violation of that promise and– and you…”
Roman sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “You just can’t, okay?”
A beat of silence. Logan stared at Roman and couldn’t help but think about how far back the two of them went; how much Roman knew about him that he didn’t yet know about himself. And even if the rules of magic would allow it, would Roman tell him any of it?
Logan closed his eyes and took a deep breath, before setting some papers aside. All he kept in his right hand was one paper: the cover of his speech, with his research question sprawled on it; the only part that wasn’t completely drowned in red ink. Patton held his other hand and squeezed it softly. Roman nodded.
“Okay, so if everything is understood, we can get started.” Roman pressed his hands on the page and closed his eyes. A soft, red glow...
And nothing happened.
“Uhh, Roman?” Patton spoke up after a few seconds. “Do you, um…”
“I– I’m fine.” Roman gritted his teeth. “Just need to get everything together. In– in place.”
“How can we assist you?”
Roman looked up at Logan, then back down at the book. He took a deep breath.
“Grab the book, Lo. I need you to read an excerpt. Kinda move things along.”
“Are you not able to read it like last ti–”
“ Time’s ticking, Logan.”
“Right, got it.” Logan grabbed the book, being careful not to drop Roman.
“Now hold it out in front of you and hold on tight.”
Patton moved his hold on Logan to his arm, bringing himself closer to his side. Logan took a deep breath.
“ ‘ Nihilism is defined by nothingness, the belief that life is meaningless. In this true nothingness, artists hence pursue their work in the hopes of creation within said void. However, the newfound rigidity of their work is more prevalent than ever. The artist has become a mass-produced object, producing in turn. Any optimism in the practice has turned to neutrality and helpless routine, if not a nightmare. The loss of identity and purpose is welcomed and–’ ”
Logan felt himself jerk forward, a blinding void of darkness– no, not darkness, nothing–  filling his vision and blurring the words.
He snuck a glance at Patton, who held him even tighter. Then, he looked at Roman, who had his eyes closed with tears of exertion beading his face.
“K-Keep–  going.”
He clenched his jaw as the nothing swirled up his legs and crawled through his skin.
“ ‘– And art has become a defense mechanism — an emotionally-neutral act of creation. If there is no spark behind the canvas, is there anything truly meant by its existence, or is it just – is it just dark– is it– ’ ”
And before the darkness swallowed him whole, Logan looked up and saw two steely, purple eyes, staring right at him.
...
(But he can’t go back, he just can’t .)
Logan blinked, trying to gain sight of his surroundings. He stood in what seemed like an ink-filled void, the air thick and hollow. All he could see was a wooden, barely-together chair and a single, dimmed lightbulb strung up from nowhere.
And on the chair, shrouded with a cloak of matching darkness, was Virgil Aries.
Virgil was leaned forward in the chair, his tattered cloak falling at his sides. Peeking out from under his hood was strands of silver hair, yet Logan noticed that Virgil looked younger than he expected, at least mid-20s.
But that wasn’t what Logan was looking at. Logan couldn’t break his stare away from Virgil’s eyes: purple and pulsing with a light that was almost blinding.
Logan dropped the book with a deafening thud , and Roman fell with it.
Virgil stared at him for a moment, then looked at the book. Logan watched Virgil make eye contact with Roman before he buried his stare into Logan’s skull.
“...Um, ow. ”
Logan frowned, then looked at the book on the floor. Roman frantically motioned for him to pick him up. Logan’s mouth dropped to a small ‘o’ and he scrambled to pick the book up.
“Oh– I apologize, I don’t know what I was thinking I–”
“Don’t sweat it. It was...a joke. Yeah.” Virgil rubbed the back of his neck. “Just a joke.”
“Is this where you live?” Patton blurted out. Virgil tilted his head. Everything he seemed to do was so sluggish.
“I live in London.” Virgil slowly looked around them. “And this isn’t...this…”
Roman hopped off the book and onto Patton’s shoulder. He loudly cleared his throat.
“Nah, this is all me, Pat. I took us here, remember? I would’ve made– er, brought you guys to a better place, but this is sorta all I could, um...get to on time, heh.”
Patton patted Roman’s head with his index finger. Virgil glared at Roman once more and narrowed his eyes.
“And who exactly are you?”
Logan turned to Roman, waiting for him to introduce himself, but he instead stayed quiet. Logan decidedly stepped forward.
“I am Logan Fray. Professor Aries, it is an honour to meet you.”
Patton whispered to Roman, “Professor?”
Roman said nothing.
“Alright, cool, so first rule — let’s not call me that. Pretty sure you aged me, like, seventy years. And you’re reminding me of my crippling student debt and the corruption within academia. So Virgil is just fine.” Virgil leaned back in his chair. “And I asked who you are — what the hell am I supposed to do with a name?”
Logan felt his cheeks burning red.
“Um– of course!” He loosened his tie and broke into a shaky smile. “I own a bookshop named Fray and Far Fables, but more notably, I am currently conducting research on the practicality and implications of nihilism in regards to...well, the death of art, for lack of better phrasing.”
“ Oh.” Virgil’s smug smile dropped. “You’re here to talk about…”
“Your book.” Logan held up a piece of paper with a bright smile. “I have a few questions for you in regards to your writing. Since we’re on a bit of a figurative time crunch at the moment, I am just going to go ahead and start. On page 34, when you stated that art’s foundation has been encased in an hopeless paradox, do you mind clarifying what tha–”
“Now I’m going to stop you right there,” Virgil cut in, waving his hand dismissively. “Are you seriously asking me to explain my book to you?”
Logan blinked.
“Not explain it, per se. I just assumed you had more to say. The book was published before you– well, it was published early. And it more or less ended with a question that I now pose today: what is, then, the point of art in a meaningless life? I am seeking these answers too, and I think we can answer them together.”
Logan took a brave step forward. “We have the most precious thing before us: knowledge and time. ”
A beat of silence. Virgil looked over at Patton and Roman.
“Is he always like this?”
“Yeahhh.” Patton gave him a small smile. “It’s cute.”
“If ‘cute’ means hopelessly pretentious, then sure.”
Logan’s jaw dropped.
“I– what?”
Patton stifled a laugh. Virgil, however, laughed openly. Logan felt himself stumble back. He turned to Roman.
“Is– is this some sort of joke? Am I being punished, and this is not actually Virgil Aries?”
“I’m right here–”
“I’m not punishing you, Logan.” Roman’s voice was barely above a murmur. “This...this is Virgil Aries.”
Virgil shrugged, leaning back in his chair. Logan stared at him, trying to imagine what he used to think Virgil looked like: straight-postured, wisps of brown hair, wise, passionate. He attempted to place the illusion on top of what he saw right now: a small, tired man.
“Your...your book is brilliant,” Logan murmured, his heart sinking. “There has to be something you can tell me.”
For a split second, Virgil’s smile fell.
“It’s all in there,” Virgil replied quietly. “There is nothing left for me to say. Who cares about knowing whether art means or does not mean something when...when everything means nothing?”
Logan blinked. To himself, he quietly murmured, “I care.”
(Buildings crashing, everything crashing– )
“Besides,” Virgil continued. “I have never really met someone who was this passionate about my book — that includes me.”
“But– but it is your life’s work,” Logan stammered. He felt the air around him grow heavier.  “Y-You– you wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t.”
Virgil blinked at him. “This ... was my life’s work?”
Shit. He forgot about that rule. Logan looked over at Roman, who stayed still.
Logan turned back to Virgil.
“Okay, okay. Even if you didn’t have anything left to say about your work, you have to at least have any insight about my question. T-There...there has to be something. ”
“Logan,” he heard Roman finally whisper behind him, “I– I think we have to go.”
“No!” Logan stormed up to Virgil, despite feeling Patton attempt to grab him back. “No, we– we can’t go, there– there has to be an answer, there has to be–”
“There isn’t anything, Logan.” Virgil’s voice suddenly became buried in overlapping echoes. He turned his head away from Logan. “There is no answer– the point of nihilism is that there is nothing. There is nothing to live for, there is nothing to write — there is no answer, Logan, because the answer is that there is none.”
“L-Logan, we have to go. ” For the first time in a long time, Roman’s voice trembled with the force of an unsteady storm. “We– we have to leave, please– ”
“Lo, I– I think you should listen to Roman, just–”
“How could you be telling me this?!” Logan felt himself gasp for air with each word. “You– you can’t understand art’s meaning without understanding the implied lack thereof, and if you already know the lack thereof, you– you have to know the– the thereof! ”
“What are you even– Logan, when will you understand?” Virgil stood up slowly. Logan felt as if the air around him was starting to suffocate him. Virgil’s voice was shaking with dark echoes that sent chills down Logan’s spine.
“I’ve been waiting for someone to prove me wrong. And no one has. ”
Logan paled. In front of him was the answer– this had to have been the answer– Virgil had to have the answer, even if he didn’t know and– and if this wasn’t the answer– if there was no answer, then–
In the blink of an eye, Logan lunged at Virgil with a frustrated roar, hearing the shouts of Roman and Patton drown out behind him. But before he could grab onto Virgil, he stopped dead in his tracks.
His hand...was grey.
And climbing up his arm was grey, something in his chest went grey, and he could feel it in his neck, in his skull–
“W-What is…” His voice was barely above a whisper. “What is happening to me?”
Virgil looked down at Logan’s darkened hand and sighed. Everything around him and Logan froze for a brief moment in what felt like a never-ending tunnel of time.
“You know what pessimistic nihilism is, right?”
“Y-Yes. It’s– it’s usually reserved for people mid-crisis before recovering into some sort of belief system”
“Then find it.” Virgil shakily grabbed the collar of Logan’s shirt. Time slowly returned in dredging slumps. Virgil's purple eyes haunted Logan in a way that he knew could not ever be reversed. “Find what you believe in because it’s not here– there’s nothing else here–”
“THAT’S ENOUGH!” Roman screamed.
Before Logan could say anything else, he felt himself fall down, down, down; past the darkness, past Patton’s screams and tears, past Virgil and Roman and the answers, just out of his reach–
And when Logan returned to the shop, panting for air, he looked up at his hand. Patches of the inky void that carved into his skin crawled down his fingertips and disappeared into the air in front of him. .
In his other hand, he saw his tight grasp on the paper with his question. Strings of words burned into his retinas.
“If life has no inherent meaning….”
“Why are humans so eager to escape …”
“What’s the point in creating something out of nothing ?”
“What’s the point of anything at all if there’s—”
And with a strangled cry, Logan ripped the paper in half, and then again, and then again; until it was all gone, and there was nothing, nothing, nothing.

May peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, Companions and those who follow his guidance. To proceed:The terrible crime committed by a group of Muslims after the Fajr (Dawn) Prayer on Tuesday, corresponding to 1/1/1400 A.H. when they broke into Al-Masjid Al-Haram (the Sacred Mosque in Makkah), fired at those who were offering Salah (Prayer) and circumambulating Allah's Sacred House, the most sacred of places, outraged the Islamic world and was received with denunciation. It was an attack on Al-Bayt-ul-Haram (the Sacred House, another name for the Ka`bah) which Allah made a refuge and a place of safety for people. It was a violation of its sanctity, the security of the country and the sacred month; an act of terrorism against the Muslims, sowing the seeds of Fitnah (trial) and wrongfully defying the ruler of the country. There is no doubt that this crime was an act of disbelief committed in the Sacred House of Allah about which Allah states, ...and whoever inclines to evil actions therein or to do wrong (i.e. practise polytheism and leave Islâmic Monotheism), him We shall cause to taste from a painful torment. [11] It is also considered as having brought fear, harm, and injustice to the Muslims. Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) states, And those who annoy believing men and women undeservedly, they bear (on themselves) the crime of slander and plain sin. [12] He (Glorified be He) states, And whoever among you does wrong (i.e. sets up rivals to Allâh), We shall make him taste a great torment. [13] He (Glorified and Exalted be He) also states, And the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers) will have neither a Walî (protector or guardian) nor a helper. [14] In addition, they took up (Part No. 4; Page No. 90)  arms and shot security guards who wanted to quell this Fitnah and protect the Muslims from their evil. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated, Whoever takes up arms against the Muslims is not of them. [1] He (peace be upon him) also prohibited carrying arms in the Sacred Mosque and stated, This city (i.e. Makkah) was made a sanctuary by Allah until the Day of Resurrection; blood should not be shed therein nor should its trees be cut. [2] He (peace be upon him) also stated, Fighting in this town was not lawful to anyone before me; it was made lawful for me only during an hour on one day; and today (now) its sanctity is the same as it was before. It is incumbent upon those who are present to convey it (this information) to those who are absent. [3] There are many Hadiths that stress this meaning. The evil and harm of this Fitnah not only affected many pilgrims, but others as well. They closed the doors of Al-Masjid Al-Haram and prevented people from entering or leaving. Thus, this group of people are described in Allah's Statement, And who are more unjust than those who forbid that Allâh’s Name be glorified and mentioned much (i.e. prayers and invocations, etc.) in Allâh’s Mosques and strive for their ruin? It was not fitting that such should themselves enter them (Allâh’s Mosques) except in fear. For them there is disgrace in this world, and they will have a great torment in the Hereafter. [15] Overall, this awful incident led to great injustice, corruption, and affliction. No similar incident had ever occurred in Al-Masjid Al-Haram before, whether in the times of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic time of ignorance) or after Islam. They justified their injustice and aggression claiming that they wanted to take Bay`ah (pledge of allegiance) to the so-called Al-Mahdy (a man named after the Prophet, who will appear as a sign of the Hour and rule according to Islamic law), it is void and groundless explanation. It is impermissible for them to use it as a pretext to violate the sanctity of Al-Masjid Al-Haram and the Muslims therein. They are not allowed to take up arms and shoot the security guards and others. The awaited Al-Mahdy is one of the matters of the Ghayb (the Unseen), so it is impermissible for any Muslim to confirm that anyone is the awaited Al-Mahdy; this is considered speaking ignorantly about Allah and His Messenger, and claiming to know that which only Allah knows; until his signs, or the Prophet's (peace be upon him) descriptions of Al-Mahdy become clear. The most important and (Part No. 4; Page No. 91)  clearest of these descriptions is that he will rule according to Shari`ah (Islamic law); filling the world with justice as much as it was filled with injustice. Other signs include his being of the family of the Prophet (peace be upon him), having a broad forehead and a prominent nose, and having the same name and surname as the Prophet (peace be upon him). If all these signs are manifested, a Muslim may claim that this is Al-Mahdy. As for relying on dreams as a proof that a certain person is Al-Mahdy, this contradicts Shari`ah, the Ijma` (consensus of scholars) and the believers. Even if many dreams are claimed, we cannot rely on them regarding something contrary to the sanctified Shari`ah. Allah (Glorified be He) perfected Islam for the Prophet (peace be upon him) and completed His Blessing on him before his death, so it is impermissible for anyone to rely on a dream in opposing Shari`ah. Moreover, the Prophet (peace be upon him) was informed that Al-Mahdy will rule according to the sanctified Shari`ah, so how can he and his followers violate the sanctity of Al-Masjid Al-Haram and the Muslims, and take up arms against them unjustly? How can he defy an already existing government that has given the Bay`ah to one man, and create anarchy this way? It is authentically reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated, When you are loyal to one man as your leader, you should smite the neck of any other person who seeks to undermine your solidarity or disrupt your unity, whoever he may be. [4] (Related by Muslim in his Sahih (authentic) Book of Hadith). When the Prophet (peace be upon him) accepted Bay`ah from his Sahabah (Companions), he made sure that they would not fight over leadership with their rulers, unless you notice them committing absolute Kufr (disbelief) for which there is a proof from Allah. [5] Praise be to Allah, this country has never committed what obligates defying this order; those who permit rebellion in the country if its people commit sins are Al-Khawarij (separatist group that believes committing a major sin amounts to disbelief) who declare Muslims to be Kafirs (disbelievers) for committing sins, fight Muslims and ignore the Mushriks (those who associate others with Allah in His Divinity or worship). The Prophet (peace be upon him) described them in His Statement: They quickly pass through (the teachings of) Islam just like an arrow passes through (Part No. 4; Page No. 92)  prey. [6] He also said, Whenever you meet them, kill them, for you will be rewarded by Allah on the Day of Judgment. [7] (Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim). There are many known Hadiths about them. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also stated, Whoever finds that the governor appointed over them indulges in an act of disobedience to Allah, they should condemn the governor's act, but should not withdraw themselves from his obedience, for whoever separates from the Muslims will die as those who died in the times of Jahiliyyah (as rebellious sinners). [8] He (peace be upon him) also stated in the Hadith of Al-Harith Al-Ash`ary , I order you to do five things Allah has ordered me to do: Jihad (fighting in the cause of Allah), listening, obedience, Hijrah (a believer's migration to an Islamic land) and (sticking to) the group. If a person separates from the community a span's length, they remove the noose of Islam from their neck, unless they repent. [9] There are many other Hadiths that stress this meaning. The scholars of Saudi Arabia, including me, have issued a Fatwa (legal opinion issued by a qualified Muslim scholar) concerning this incident. This Fatwa was published in local newspapers, and broadcast on radio and television. GOAL – Juventus 0-1 Tottenham
Erik Lamela
A well-deserved goal from Spurs, who have been the better side – comfortably.
Son Heung-min holds his pass before slipping it right to Troy Parrott, who has made the overlapping run.
The youngster’s strike is saved by Gianluigi Buffon but it falls to Erik Lamela in the centre and he pokes it into an empty net.

Kyle Walker-Peters uses his strength to hold off Cristiano Ronaldo on the left and the Juve forward ends up getting a little knock on his knee.
He turns away wincing but sticks a thumb up to let Maurizio Sarri know he’s fine. He’s giggling too as he gestures he was just bundled off it.

Mauricio Pochettino just walked 40 yards down the touchline to have a word with the nearside linesman.
I think the Tottenham manager was upset by a tackle on one of his players earlier.
It was all quite amicable, although Pochettino did return for another go when the same official got closer to the halfway line.

Mario Mandzukic wins the ball for Juve high up the pitch and threads it through to Cristiano Ronaldo.
The number seven usually hits those first time but he takes a touch and immediately regrets it as he’s hounded upon by young Japhet Tanganga.
Under pressure, Ronaldo tries a poked effort which is blocked by Toby Alderweireld. Great defending!

So, there is a rival for Ronaldo in the crowd today.
Tottenham’s Son Heung-min is probably the most famous Asian player in the world right now.
There are screams when he gets the ball. The noise for Ronaldo is still a bit more frenzied though.

Everyone is here to see Ronnie.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner pulls off a few stepovers as he sprints along the box, trying to tee up a shot.
He backheels it to a teammate before it’s curled back towards him in the centre. He shapes up for an overhead and the volume in the National Stadium turns up. But it’s headed away by Toby Alderweireld just in the nick of time.
