i think me and my dad’s ufo encounter is objectively the funniest.
my dad was a pilot. he’s got a lot of pilot friends. he’s worked in aviation my entire life. he hears a LOT about ufos in his professional and social circle. he is the reason I am a ufo nerd. we used to watch documentaries on them together when i was a kid. we both have Theories. we’re both ufo people, is what i’m getting at here.
so in the middle of broad daylight, while driving to the next state over to see family, we drive past a power plant with a very large smokestack. there is a ufo hovering beside the top of the smokestack. it looks like a typical “i want to believe” flying saucer. from where we are, it looks about as wide as the smokestack.
we both see it. and my brain is guess just kinda. short circuited. because it’s broad daylight, middle of the day, and it’s just. there. hanging there. like it belongs there. despite the fact i am obviously seeing what i think i’m seeing, i’m still trying to find a reasonable explanation because like. can’t be, right?
my dad says “look at that”
and I reply with something like “huh, weird”
and it isn’t until we’re a mile and a half down the road that we actually PROCESS what we saw. two giant ufo weirdos see a ufo out in the open in the middle of the day and are just like “oh neat” lmao.

thank u omg!!!<3
10.) what’s one book you’d suggest every person should read?
it's hard to think of a non-boomer answer to this lmao i'm so sorry. i genuinely don't have a good answer. i havent read brave new world since i was like 12 but i think it had at least some relevant ideas in it (in reference to consumption)
18.) describe your personal style?
it has truly devolved into 'whatever looks good to me at that exact moment' lmao. cant think of any good words to actually describe it but ppl i look to for inspiration r early gwen stefani outfits (with caution), lady miss kier, hayley williams, prince, jarvis cocker, the twins from the garden, chloe sevigny, selectively julian casablancas, chrissie hynde, karen o lately. idfk depends on the day and gender sometimes i look like a stock goth character from a cartoon and sometimes i dress like an actual clown and sometimes i dress like tom delonge. nightmare.
22.) what was your first cell phone?
verizon pantech jest baby

That Audiovox CDM-8930 Prototype Board
This might be a pretty lengthy read since this was originally written for Twitter/mastodon thread bursts but... here goes!
As promised, here's a post about the prototype Audiovox CDM-8930 that was recently uncovered.
The phone board was originally posted for sale without any indication of who made it, though there were a few clues that it was at least a Curitel-made ODM. For context, the vast majority of Audiovox phones made in the early-mid 2000s were ODMs from Curitel (later Pantech).
So what clues were there? The listing photos weren't clear enough to make out any board markings, though the phone came with a box with HYUNDAI and "TX-125C" on it. Hyundai had a mobile phone division at a point, which would then go on to be purchased by Curitel.
The "TX-125C" marking also helped narrow it down a lot - it was very close to other released Audiovox phone FCC IDs (e.g. CDM-8920 → PP4TX-120C → TX-120C). What was odd about this was that there is no TX-125C registered with the FCC…
Skipping ahead to acquiring the phone board, the oddities only increased. The board itself did not have the TX-125C markings, but instead had "TX130C_MAIN PROTO1_4_A 2003_09_17 T130M_03_335" silkscreened around the top right. The question then became "was there a TX-130C FCC ID?"
There sure was. It turns out this board strapped to a piece of cardboard with twisty ties was a prototype of the #Audiovox CDM-8930 - a phone that is not too frequently found for sale online. (photo courtesy of the user manual) https://fccid.io/PP4TX-130C
The silkscreened date on the board helped show how early of a prototype this was - almost half a year before its FCC approval! Unfortunately without a screen, it was hard to say what sort of software was on it (if there was anything on it at all).
The only indication that it wasn't completely blank at that point was the fact its power draw wasn't entirely consistent, though it did loop around the 120-130mA range. Next up was dumping the phone via JTAG, as per usual around here :)
Dumping the flash chip let us know it was not entirely blank! Checking for common resources using MultiExtractor showed the same sort of icons that could be found on the Qualcomm 6280 F-US reference device that was sent in not too long ago.
From there it didn't take long to realize this was still running bone-stock Qualcomm reference firmware! The latest date referenced was October 27th, 2003, which isn't as early as the board itself, but still predates its release let alone FCC approval by quite a bit. It identified itself as "T130CVE0R01.152"
While the Hyundai box nor the included JTAG adapter were used to dump the firmware, they will certainly be held onto. Oddly enough, the TTA-24 plug with the parallel port end does not have all 24 wires connected, despite having more than enough pins available on said port.
It would certainly be interesting to try and flash this to a retail CDM-8930 - but not before preserving a retail firmware release first!

my brother had a phone like the Samsung Intensity for his first phone bc it was a hand-me-down from our grandparents and I was super excited to use that phone when he got a new one but by the time I was old enough my parents decided it was too old and I needed a smart phone :( it made me rly sad bc I was really looking forward to using that phone
Aw, I'm sorry :( I know the feeling, I got promised my dad's old Razr but that wasn't feasible when I needed a phone so I ended up going with the Pantech P-8000 Crossover. It may be worth asking if you can still have it (or looking on EBay to see if there are any available), even if it isn't feasible to use it could still be fun to have, and you'd be contributing to preserving the history of mobile phones.
