I absolutely LOVE the Squirtle/Wartortle illustrations by kantaro in Pokemon 151!
Tumblr media
The Squirtle jumping so joyfully from the rock into the ocean, the colors are STUNNING! I love the contrast of the Squirtle's aqua blue framed in the vivid orange sky, the soft bit of blue reflecting in its shell and its tail just catching the sun, how little and squishy its body looks as it launches itself towards the water with such tremendous excitement!
The lineless style of the background gives me the feel of a travel poster and I sense the tropical environment around it from the rocks and trees framing the corners, the waterfall splashing with as much energy as the Squirtle!
The layered blues on the surface of the water and the bubbles rising at the corner make me FEEL the liquid rising to meet the Squirtle--I can just feel how the next moment it's going to break through and be immersed in a cool island swim!
Tumblr media
And the Wartortle running along the sunset beach, this is somehow everything I always imagined for Wartortle! I adore the way the rich purple melts into the warm red/orange sky, the matching purple clouds and shadows in the foreground, and how the dimming sunlight glows red on Wartortle's deep blues!
I love how the yellow and orange of the sky illuminate the lapping waves, I can just feel the gentle motion of the sea at dusk. The aqua color of the ocean matches Wartortle's ears and tail and sets off the red-orange sand, I just love how the colors are here!
Wartortle looks so round and squishy, I love its happiness as it goes frolicking through the shallows, chasing the bubbles caught in the setting sun! The shine and deep shadow on its shell give it an almost jewel texture like real tortoise shell; I love the silhouetted splash Wartortle leaves as it goes running across the shore. It's so full of energy and delight at the end of a gorgeous day! The colors in these are SO vivid and harmonized and the style is so cute and bursting with energy and joy. I just LOVE it (also Squirtle is my starter)
#pokemon#pokemon tcg#long post#i have deep affection for bulbasaur as well though and i also love the bulbasaur/ivysaur cards in this set#i SO wish we'd gotten art of the final evolutions in the same style as the pre-evos' standard cards!!#(yes i do love the full art ones but i also love the illustrations on the standard cards!)#from the way the settings in these two were going; i would have imagined blastoise to be set at night (??)#i LOVE pokemon cards. i can't keep up with every set but i started collecting again now and then a few years ago#and 151 has really got me wanting the full set the way i haven't since childhood. SO many beautiful illustrations (but there always are)#it's like having little pieces of art of my favorite characters and it's only.. slightly... less expensive than actually commissioning ....#i KNOW it's less expensive to buy the individuals online but it's so much less fun#part of the fun is having YOUR own pokemon journey ((going to the store)) and seeing what YOU encounter ((when you open the pack))#i do buy them online sometimes but i usually dont form as strong associations with them as when i open a pack in a certain setting or place#i tend to try to save them to open right before a significant event like starting something new or a holiday. so that i form associations#and it's like 'oh that's the galarian obstagoon from when my mom came home for christmas'#and 'that's the snorlax who reassured me when i was hurt'#i don't buy them too often so i've got to make it count#anyway i know i should wait for the prices on this one to come down because it's absolutely ridiculous#i didn't buy anything at release because i was like $6 for one booster pack??? but i couldn't take just sitting and watching them sell out#i really like the poster because i can look at so many beautiful pictures all together#i could say stuff like this about literally every pokemon illustration (if i had time to write it out) and sometimes i've wanted to#i just chose these two because these are a couple of my original favorite pokemon and i just couldn't keep it to myself. i LOVE these

Such a Tease: Chapter 1
Pairing: (Aged) Gary/Blue Oak x Reader
Summary: After a tragedy, you make the decision to quit your career as a trainer and focus on breeding Pokemon for the general population. You are one of the best in the region. You aren’t expecting the have to deal with your childhood rival and crush suddenly popping back into your life. After all, Gary Oak broke your heart and now you are determined to break his… or are you?
NOTES:*This is my very first pokemon story written many many years ago. I’ve decided to revamp it and see what happens! I hope you enjoy a little Gary / Blue love! I will kinda be combing the anime and game versions and I may or may not have just bought the manga to read… It will kinda be my take on these characters. Ash may become more like Red, but I haven’t really decided yet I’m just having fun with this!*
Tumblr media
Getting Started The alarm sounds much too soon for anyone’s liking and groggily you roll over and hit snooze. Too bad that doesn’t work. The annoying jingling in your ear continues much to your half-asleep dismay, finally opening your eyes you see the source of the noise at such a forsaken time of the morning it’s coming from Jingle Bells your Chimecho. You sigh in exasperation at her before hauling yourself up out of bed making her promptly stop. You roll your eyes as she merely floats in front of you staring up at you with devious innocence; you swear she has been hanging around Missy, your Mismagius for far too long. You yawn as you make your way past her into the bathroom to get ready for the day.
You had spent all of last night moving into your new center and you were dead. Jingle has been your faithful companion and alarm clock for years at this point, but perhaps she is a little overzealous at times. Especially when it’s five o’clock in the morning and the world isn’t even awake yet.
After you have prepared yourself for a day of decorating, arranging, unpacking and sorting, you head down the stairs to the oversized kitchen, which you soon realize has yet to be stocked. Upon this realization, your tummy comes to the conclusion that it needs something and now; so to alert you to such feelings it lets out a rather large growl. You sigh for the umpteenth time this morning and grab your purse and keys as you head out the door. Lady saunters after you, since she isn’t ever too far behind, taking her sweet time to meander out the door at her dignified pace. You merely chuckle at her and close the door behind her when she finally reaches the outside. As you begin your walk to the town she matches her pace with yours easily.
Looking down at her you say, “Alright Lady dear, how about we stop at that café I saw in town for breakfast then over to the store? We’ll do some shopping to get us in the mood for decorating!”
“Espi!” she exclaims in agreement as the two of you continue through the gardens toward the forest.
You love the location of your breeding center you must admit. It is rather beautiful and so private. A decent size of the forest had been cleared to make room for it, but you made sure that all the wood that was cleared went to building something. Even a natural spring ran through your property down to a pond that was surrounded by trees and flowers. Flower gardens add to the picturesque front of the house which is at least 3 stories high with a basement as well. Of course, your house will also be housing your staff and several of your Pokémon so you had to have a large house.
The back of the house wasn’t anything less breathtaking with herb and vegetable gardens for cooking purposes as well as medical. Off to the right side, a massive barn looking structure would be the home of the Pokémon that you would be breeding and training. The entire grounds were enclosed with a high-security system, invisible to the naked eye and impossible to enter or leave except at the designated locations. Oh yes, it is quite a sight to behold and it better be for what you have invested in it. This is your one shot at your dream. You hope that it works considering all of your earnings, winnings, and savings had gone into this sucker.
The sun played through the canopy of the trees as you and Lady make your way to town. Neither of you cares about the time or the distance, after all, the two of you have been travelers for so long that such things have merely become irrelevant. The relaxing silence is what you need considering the hustle and bustle of the past few days. Getting moved in has been an experience all in itself one you don’t need for quite some time.
The tunnel of trees ends and you are greeted with the sight of Route one and merely ten feet away, Viridian City. The city has grown since your departure several years prior and you rather like the changes made. You allow your memory to lead you to the café you saw while walking through town a few days ago. It’s a cozy place full of big comfy couches and armchairs as well as outdoor tables and chairs under a gazebo. The lighting was bright from the rays coming in through the various windows and skylights. You could see various plants and such growing in the flower beds that surround it giving it a cheery vibe. Upon entering you make your way up to the counter and begin to look up at the drinks posted up on the sign as well as the array of sweet cakes and such that line the pastry case before you.
“Hi! How are you today?” chirps the girl behind the counter, how she chirps at six in the morning you will never know, but appreciate the sentiment anyway.
“I’m good, thanks,” You answer with a pleasant smile.
“So, what can I get for you?”
After you have placed your order and gotten something for Lady as well you make your way over to a table in the corner by a window. You begin to people watch as you sit in a more or less daze just taking in the town.
“Are you new to town?” interrupts a voice beside you.
“Huh?” you question turning to see the girl from behind the counter cleaning a nearby table. She smiles pleasantly and repeats the question.
“Oh, I’m from Pallet town originally, but have been traveling for the past fifteen years. I’ve just recently decided to move back to start my own breeding center.”
“OH!!! So you’re the owner of that new breeding center on Route One! That is sooo cool!!! I’ve always wanted to be a Pokémon breeder just like my brother. And one day I will, but right now I don’t even have a Pokémon.” You frown at how her excitement became disappointment so quickly.
“Well, I do own a breeding center…. And I do need help… And I do have plenty of Pokémon….”
She turns to you her eyes getting very wide with each statement you make.
“Really!? Do you really mean what I think you mean?!?!”
“Well do you have any experience at all with Pokémon?”
“Yeah! My brother taught me a lot!! He’s a great breeder, but he has been traveling for a while trying to get more rare Pokémon to breed. So, I haven’t really got to see him a lot.”
“That’s ok, stop by sometime tomorrow and we’ll see about getting you a job. I’m going to see how you do with some of the Pokémon before I do though ok?”
“Ok!! That sounds great!! Oh! I need to get back to work. Bye, see you tomorrow!!”
You smile and nod at the enthusiastic girl as she runs off behind the counter to serve the next customer. You are a little surprised to find a guy already sitting on the other side of the café sipping his coffee and reading the morning paper with an Umbreon sitting to his right eyeing your Espeon with interest. Lady merely ignores him as she continues to eat the bit of pastry you had given her for breakfast.
“You’re such a heartbreaker Lady,” you chuckle as you glance back over to the Umbreon only to see who his trainer is.
One: Gary Oak.
At the mere sight of him, you are quite sure that every ounce of maturity, intelligence, grace, and confidence that you had collected over the past fifteen years dissolves in a vat of childish hopes and dreams that were crushed beneath his foot. You swallow hard at the feelings swirling around inside of you at the sight of him. Fighting hard against them, you make it a point to get up and leave, slipping your sunglasses on in the process to avoid any unnecessary conflict. Lady sensing your discomfort leaps upon your shoulder and glares both the male and his Umbreon down the whole way out the door. You sigh in relief, letting out the breath you didn’t know you were holding, the moment you are out of sight of the café, your shoulders relax allowing you to calm yourself down. Lady looks up at you questioningly, concern and confusion laced in the waves she is sending you. You look down and smile in reassurance at your best friend, knowing that no matter what happens she will always be there for you.
Shaking off the surprise from seeing the boy who broke your fifteen-year-old heart you continue your day as planned. Lady helps you pick out the decor, sheet sets, and curtains. Thankfully you have already picked out appliances and you don’t need to worry about them. You head to the store to stock up on groceries and giggle when Lady levitates snacks she likes into the cart. You roll your eyes at her antics but allow her to indulge all the same.
A very sincere part of you can’t get Gary out of your head though. You had adored him when you were younger, definitely against your better judgment. He was arrogant and stuck up, but he was smart, cool and confident as well. As he gained success as a trainer you had just fallen for him even more. Five years after setting out on your journey you ran into him at a competition and worked up the nerve to ask him out. Not only had he rejected you but he had laughed in your face. To this day you recall the embarrassment you felt as you ran from his jeers.
Despite the passage of time, you still felt like that fifteen-year-old today when you saw him in the cafe. You groan as you roll your eyes at yourself.
“What is wrong with you?! You went on to be one of the strongest trainers in the region! You are considered one of the best in the business. You don’t care about some stupid boy.”
With a final nod of your head indicating that this internal conversation is over you focus on getting Gary Oak out of your head onto the task at hand. You have a lot to do and you don’t have time to worry about him.

Round 1: VS Venonat - Legends Part 1
Hello everyone, welcome to my story! This is the first book in a series I'm writing. Hopefully, it'll be finished the way I want it to be. I have a lot of plans to manipulate known facts and add my own into the fray as well.
Sorry, y'all! I didn't mean to fall off on writing this. I just got self-conscious. But I'm not going to let that get into the way anymore! I'm gonna stay on top of writing this!
Especially with this new writing style I've got! I've discovered I'm more a slice of life, mystery, fantasy type of writer. Not so much action like I originally tried. So, my chapters will be much shorter than before and will have great character interactions. I hope y'all like it this go around! And I promise I'll do better with staying on top of things!
I've made a lot of changes to the OG story, along with the previous version so I'll make sure to spot them out and let y'all know!
Oh, and quick disclaimer. I'm a black queer writer so all of my stories, including this one, will have characters who explore black and queer themes. I hope this creates a welcoming atmosphere for all to enjoy my stories and see a different perspective on pokemon and what it can be written about.
I also hope to inspire more black and queer writers to write stories on this site. The more the merrier!
Oh and I'm thinking about doing this thing where I tell y'all what music helped me write these chapters. It's a fun little thing. Mainly because music is a big part of my writing process so I thought it'd be fun to share with y'all!
So these three chapters were inspired by the Calling All Lovers album by Tamar Braxton! I love her voice and have been obsessed with her recently! She's always been one of my favs (#piscesgang) but this revisit to this gem just kept me going! I believe the song that helped a lot was Broken Record.
Special shoutout to Big Dummy by Cocoa Sarai (#piscesgang) as well! That song kept me motivated.
Without further ado, I hope you enjoy it!

Round 1: VS Venonat – Legends Part 1
Location: Twinleaf Town Date: August 4th, 3000 Time: 8:45am
Legends. Paxton grew up on the grand tales of mystery and wonder. Weaved together by ancient people who desired to understand the world around them. From declarations of the universe’s creation to the birth of emotions. A legend existed for them all. And all found themselves scribed and stored in libraries across Sinnoh.
Once upon a time, he believed them. Sat amongst groups of budding trainers in awe as their teacher’s spun these tales. Admired the scholars who backed up these claims with beautifully dressed lies. Part of him wished he believed them. At least then he’d preserve the innocence he lost long ago.
Not that it mattered. Innocence didn’t make for a great travel companion. Clouded the mind and led even the best astray. Paxton knew he’d never succumb to it. Not again.
“Ain’t that right, Kiri?” his little formantis thrilled beside him. She fell in step beside him, having just defeated a wild bidoof. Annoying rodents with the worst aromas.
Under the morning sun, he kept moving. Summers in Sinnoh never made much sense. Despite the heat, a chilling breeze whisked by. Eastern winds—had to be from the lake. Still, a bit musty for his taste. He heard Lake Verity was a beautiful place filled with energetic, young pokémon. Perhaps just another well-crafted lie.
It doesn’t matter. Paxton shrugged and continued his path. He had his mission and pitstops didn’t fit the bill. Soon enough, he found himself inside Twinleaf Town. A cute little place filled with morning folks. They took to the streets with their pokémon and tended to their business. A few merchant stands set up with fresh produce and supplies.
“Pretty nice, huh?” Kiri agreed. She breathed in the fresh air and thrilled. Much better for her than Jubilife City.
Now, if any of them could point him in the right direction—
“I tell ya it’s true!” A youngster wailed to a crowd. Quite the sight, Paxton mused. Clothes tattered and caked with mud. His youthful tan marred with bruises and an odd burn across his forearm.
“There’s a monster in the lake! It attacked me and my nidoran!”
A monster in Lake Verity? Paxton frowned. Too farfetched for his taste. Powerful pokémon never lingered along the lakefront, so the merchants told him. The most dangerous any trainer encountered was a choleric gyarados!
There’s no such thing as monsters, he scoffed but got closer regardless. The kid had a story, no doubt about it. Perhaps it would prove to be a challenge for him.
Though his hopes weren’t high. Twinleaf Town hadn’t produced capable trainers in years—
“The boy speaks truth, if only misguided,” an elderly man took the boy’s side with a pleasant smile. Eyes narrowed with wisdom as leaned against his cane. “There’s always been a force protecting the lakefront. A guardian blessed by Lady Mesprit herself. It serves to protect the grounds from intruders.”
A guardian, the Paxton scoffed. Yet another well-dressed lie. And the crowd around him shared his thoughts if their whispers were any indication.
Clearly, the elder saw no reason to stop. He only adjusted his kimono and tapped his cane against the lush grass. A soft, melodic sound, yet it quieted the confused herd of people. Paxton whistled. Plenty of teachers killed for that superpower, especially on the last day of classes.
“Now, now,” The elder smiled, gingerly tapping the pokéball on his cane. “We all knew of the legend.”
The ball snapped open and released a pokémon before them all. A beautiful feline with glowing, white fur. The perfect contrast to its pitch-black skin and talons. Armed with a scythe-like tail and a crescent horn jutting from its forehead.
It glared at him with glowing red eyes. Eyes filled with frosty wisdom. Lingered on him, demanding something the trainer wasn’t prepared to give.
He flinched. Not his proudest moment. And the pokémon agreed, turning up its nose with a snarl.
“You feel it, Absol?” The man said in a graveled whisper. At once, the strange pokémon—absol, he supposed—growled. The elder stroked its forehead and locked eyes with the trainer. “Young man, what is your name.”
Part of him wanted nothing more than to flip the old geezer off. He hated unwanted attention. Yet the questioning gaze of the crowd made him shrink. Of course, that geezer had them wrapped up in his every word.
“Paxton,” he spoke softly, gathering Kiri closer for comfort. She glared and waved her arms for battle. “Paxton Lotus of Floaroma Town. This is my partner pokémon, Kiri the formantis.”
The geezer nodded with a strange smile. But Paxton couldn’t place why it disturbed him. “You all remember the legend,” the geezer spoke again. “A child blessed with verity. Discovered by the peaceful flower.” Paxton groaned. Of course, this had something to do with him. No wonder he didn’t trust the geezer. “Tell me, young one. What has brought you to his town?”
Easy. He had his mission. Deliver the package and report back to Professor Kapok. Nothing special. He did plenty of these over the weeks.
“To see the lake guardian with my own eyes,” Paxton spoke, but words felt foreign. “And start my journey with an adventure.”
“An adventure,” The man smiled. A knowing smile Paxton saw plentifully on Father’s face. “An adventure intertwined with the red strings. Yes, you certainly shall receive one. Follow me, please youngling.”
Something tells me I shoulda stayed in Floaroma Town
Suddenly, staying in Floaroma Town felt like the right move. Paxton sighed and ran a hand over his green coils. Lake Verity didn’t live up to the legends. No bustling pokémon or fairy spirits. Not even a spontaneous battle—though, Paxton yearned for it well. Just silence and a thick fog.
A strange fog at that. It hung over the trees until they caved to its weighed. Many bent at odd angles. Not even Eterna Forest looked so eerie. And that forest had far too many ghost-type pokémon.
“I hate this place,” Paxton shivered. The air seemed so cold and heavy. And each brush of air prickled his skin with sharpened icicles.
Paxton paused by a familiar tree. Passed it a few times now, he knew. No other tree had these strange cravings on the bark. Some language, he wagered. However, the letters seemed bizarre and had cycloptic eyes. Strange, yet they seemed familiar. As if he saw them in a dream before.
{Paxton…} a voice whispered on the wind. Eyes darted around, but Paxton couldn’t find the source. Yet the voice continued, whispering his name in an offbeat rhythm. {Paxton…}
Great, I’m loosin’ it! Paxton groaned. Yet the voice paid him no heed. Each whisper grew louder than the last with a pronounced echo. Mashed together with words until it jumbled into an incoherent mess. Pain shot through his mind and Paxton stumbled. Braced against the tree, he stared into the fog and froze.
A figure breached the fog. Pale as ice with messy coils and lifeless eyes. Naked yet the wisping streamers of the fog covered anything unsavory. The figure stared at him with shinning sky-blue eyes…and smiled. Giggled even!
Is that a ghost? Paxton swallowed. Spirits weren’t his forte. In fact, they freaked him out!
{Paxton…} the ghost spoke even though its lips never moved. It urged him to follow as it stepped back into the fog. {Paxton…}
…Hell. Against his better judgement, he followed it. Chased it through the shifting fog as Kiri appeared beside him in a burst of light. He needed her. If this ghost was anything like the kind in Kanto, then he couldn’t take any chances! Would’ve been a perfect time to find that guardian though.
Guardian…what if that ghost was the guardian? A chill ran down his spine. He hoped not. Dealing with the undead was Casper’s thing, not his! He had enough of ghost-type pokémon ever since he got lost in that busted down chateau!
Still, he put those thoughts aside and chased its faded form. Even as his lungs screamed at him to take a break. Or his legs struggled to keep up. He fought through it. And Paxton found himself in a clearing. Empty, yet devoid of the heavy fog. Just a soft breeze and lake water as it crashed against the ground.
The ghost turned to him and grinned. Eyes filled with mirth as it lifted off the ground and floated to the lake. Paxton followed and gazed in awe. The ghost danced above, swinging its arms. It spiralled through the morning skies and giggled. Soft and melodious as the soft waves rolling through. And with a grin, the ghost dove into the lake.
Glittering light erupted across the water. Engulfed the lake in a rainbow splendor.
For a moment, Paxton stared into the light. Entranced as thoughts raced through his mind. Feelings, long since buried, unearthed and flooded him in a sparkling array of light—
(Veno-NAT!)
Paxton didn’t realize he moved until the heat hit him. As he rolled along the soft grass, charred dirt sprinkled his skin. Ignited by flashes of green light. Something attacked him, but he couldn’t see anything in the grass. Just rustling as the breeze blew through—
(NAT!)
This time, Paxton was ready. He lunged away as streaks of light smashed into the ground. Unharmed except for the light scarps. Good enough for Kiri as she dashed into the fight. She weaved through the streaks of light and unleashed a spiral of glowing leaves into the tall grass. Trimmed grass fluttered through the air, but the rustled told him all he needed to know.
“Kiri, widen your range and trim the grass! Razor Leaf!”
Sharpened leaves ripped through the air and trimmed the tall grass. Amongst the fallen leaves, he caught a glimpse of the assailant. Purple for sure…and were those clodhopper feet?
The creature paused in the epicenter of the field. And…it had to be the ugliest thing Paxton ever saw. Thick, disheveled purple fur mashed with giant, red eyes, stubby paws and insect features. Poor thing. Nobody’d ever train something so hideous.
This must be the monster. Paxton frowned. Ugly or not, he had to get rid of it.
“Kiri, time to water the garden.” Kiri rushed it and slashed it across the chest. The bug cried out, but Kiri didn’t stop there. She slashed and slashed, drawing pained buzzes from the creature. Now that Kiri had a target, that bug didn’t have a chance.
“That’s it! Fury Cutter!”
Once Fury Cutter went to work, it didn’t matter what pokémon Kiri faced. Each slash gained greater strength than the last. A nasty move for sure but made pokémon battles so much easier. The bug stumbled away from a slash and hopped away. But Kiri raced after it, unleashing more spiraling leaves to smash into its back.
“Finish it, Kiri! Leaf—”
Kiri cried out, low and mangled, as she fell forward! Her blades held her up, but she gasped for air.
But how?! Paxton watched in horror as the air rippled and smashed into Kiri, blowing her back. He lunged for her. Caught her just before she crashed. And when he pulled her close, he found streaks of purple staining her green skin. Poison?
(Nat?) The bug hopped over. Body tensed as green light oozed underneath its messy fur. Paxton dipped a hand to his belt. He had the perfect pokémon for this ugly—
“Motha,” A calm, melodious voice washed over the field. And the beast paused. “That’s enough.”
The beast hobbled over to the lake with a certain bounce that Paxton didn’t appreciate.
“That’s enough fighting, please,” the same voice spoke again. And a trainer climbed out of the crystal waters. Clad in only a pair of black briefs decorated with bugs and bubbles. His soaked black coils hung over his eyes, dripping water down his toned hazelnut body. When he finally moved the coiled curtains, Paxton caught sight of sky-blue eyes.
Just like that ghost.
But…his looked so shattered.
“Who are you?” He spoke again with that same melodious quality. Only this time, there was a noticeable edge. Like a cliff blocking a powerful wave. “What are you doing in Lake Verity?”
Paxton scowled. Figures the monster had a trainer. It fought too well to be wild. But it didn’t make sense. Why attack? Paxton shook his head.
“My name is Paxton—Paxton Lotus of Floaroma Town,” he gulped. His heart pounded against his chest. “I’m here to defeat the monster in Lake Verity. That you, ain’t it?”
The trainer paused. And his eyes darkened with flecks of gray.
“I am the guardian of Lake Verity,” he began slowly as a storm brewed behind his lips. “My name is Turquoise. Turquoise Yukule.”
How did y'all like that chapter? It took some time to perfect, but I loved the twist it took! I'm happy with it.
Paxton's a new character I made. Lowkey based him off of a mix of the Aroma Lady and Gardener Trainer Classes. I'm starting to really fuse Trainer Classes for some reason and I love it lol
And yay, Turquoise is back! He's literally my favorite little bubble of sunshine. I love his character and did some changes to him too. I'll let y'all know his Trainer Class next chapter!
But I'd to hear from y'all. Feel free to leave a review or PM me. I'd love to hear your feedback. And I'll do my best to respond to all reviews as well!

Pokémon White Randomized Nuzlocke Run [Part 4]
We have an invitation to run off and battle one of our rival characters for free exp, so in the immediate wake of earning the third badge, that is where those still remaining shall march off.
Still breathing:
Frogger (Seismitoad)
Ptera (Archeops)
Palm (Breloom)
Batman (Escavalier)
But instead of running where game progression wants us to...
Tumblr media
Back to the bridge. I wish I had my bike. As much as I love these monstrosities in this game, I’ve done a lot of back and forth in my grinding quest. This should hopefully cover it for a while. One last time for grins.
Tumblr media
Or. Not.
My memory was that this guy left after you earned the Bug badge. I guess that was mistaken. So I guess I get to run all the way back across the bridge, since I just wasted my time.
I know I can’t catch whatever’s in the dark grass he’s blocking off, but I still really want to know what’s available. I guess I am doomed to wait until later.
Off to fight Bianca.
I haven’t given my Amulet Coin to anyone yet. I’ll give it to Frogger. Ptera’s still batting first because there’s no reason not to, but he has Acrobatics, so no items for him. He will have to play with other people and pokemon, not toys.
Frogger has seniority. He will care for our finances.
Tumblr media
Heeeeey, Bianca.
Give me levels.
I love how these fights always reference the mess me and my friends made of my room in the first five seconds. We’ve learned so much. Now we ask before we have fights indoors, and keep in mind the expensive electronics nearby.
She has a level 18 Herdier. It doubtless knows Bite.
That no longer concerns us.
Frogger is permitted to duel with her bloodthirsty level 20 Patrat. A dangerous foe, to be sure. Arrogance has been no friend to us in past altercations with it.
I am ridiculously overleveled.
A level 18 Munna and Pansear will round out her team, and Frogger will slay them both with distinction, granting us no levels and money. We can settle for money.
Tumblr media
Bianca always makes me so sad. Watching a character’s enthusiasm dwindle is never fun, no matter the game, and she’s such a sweetheart. It isn’t her fault the plot won’t let her win. She calls me her friend and remembers to ask permission to have pokemon battles indoors.
Then she says more stuff and me being sad about her sad feelings is less important because she’s talking about all of her happy feelings thanks to the journey.
Maybe I should stop talking about parts of the story I barely remember as they’re happening and just read.
Tumblr media
See now, you, you I have no problems beating.
Opening move is a level 20 Pidove. I think we can safely switch that to past tense. Same for the level 20 Pansage, level 22 Meganium I keep forgetting he has, and level 20 Liepard.
Palm was given the Liepard to feast upon.
The rest were tribute for Ptera.
Tumblr media
Hello what is up, are we doing a thing?
Oh. No, she just called to let us know she’ll be waiting for us at the next city. You know, in the old days, professors would just show up unannounced and throw eggs at whatever ten-year-old happened to be closest and tell them to run around so it’ll hatch.
I’m not sure I like this more modern approach of politeness.
Tumblr media
Three cheers for being allowed to move forward again. Onward, to trainers who will not expect a level 32 Archeops!
Naturally, what all this time I spend being ridiculously overpowered is going to do is build a false sense of confidence, and at some point in the future I will, once again, suffer horrific losses that shine a light on my hubris.
Then I’ll go through another grind session, whining all the way, and the segment after that, I’ll be back to being superpowered.
Knowing this should theoretically protect me from letting it happen. Let’s watch.
Tumblr media
!
It’s a new area!
Is it... could that possibly mean...?
Tumblr media
...
Hey Randomizer what in the fuck.
Uh.
Um.
...Game, the dramatic legendary music is not helping much with thought. At all. Let me think... I know it’s at least partly Flying (in as much as I know anything, so without looking it up, I don’t actually have a clue). I don’t know a thing about its moveset in general, forget at this level.
I guess before I start asking complicated questions like what’s best suited to wound it and not die, I should try throwing a Quick Ball.
I have those.
Tumblr media
I sometimes have luck to go with. Let’s hope now is one of those times.
Tumblr media
I do not foresee enjoying this encounter.
Adding to the trouble, whatever this thing’s typing is, it is not resistant to sandstorms. It’s going to take damage every single turn, and has an abysmal catch rate to boot.
I think Palm can get a hit in without killing it. Mach Punch is weak against Flying.
So it knows Gust and Swagger. One Mach Punch without the aid of Swagger got it to almost mid health. I don’t think I get to attack it again. I should just let the sandstorm do its work. Frogger knows how to stand still.
Add Bite to the moveset list, but nothing on my team cares anymore! Insert sobs here.
You know. I’m looking at the Poke Balls I have available, and I can’t help but notice that my stock does not have legendaries in mind. I have ten of the standard model, but everything else is in the single digits. Single digits that don’t even fill up one hand.
...It’s going to die to Sandstorm before I can catch it, isn’t it?
My only Ultra Ball is now gone.
I don’t think I’ve gotten a single roll for it yet. I have maybe four more chances.
Tumblr media
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GLORY TO THE POWER OF THE DUSK BALL!
Tumblr media
Pure Flying, you do not fill any gaps in my team at all except for conceivably the most crucial: The number gap. If I’d lost another route, I would have been very sad indeed.
What do I name you, though?
Gelding.
Because I can’t look at this set of legendaries without thinking about Wind Waker, so you get Zelda, then gusts and gales and all things blustery tend to start with G, and ‘ing’ is just a nice finisher.
(Looking up pokemon stuff is against my self-imposed rules, but dictionary stuff isn’t. I knew when I picked the name that it was an actual word, and something to do with animals, maybe to do with leggy ones, but did not remember what, just that it is a nice sounding word. I was banking on it being deer related.
Nope.
Sorry about your name, Gelding. It’s staying now.)
Tumblr media
Gelding is Lax and proud of his power. I never like seeing either of the Defense stats in the blue, but I have zero memory of what this legendary is good for anyway. Presumably you’re going to be an overpowered monstrosity that I accidentally kill.
I think, rather than exploring the Resort area further (there’s some sort of underground section that it’s own area somewhere in there, so maybe, maybe teammate number six lurks beneath), I’m going to head to the next town and buy some more catching supplies.
That was far from a chill catch.
In lieu of thinking, I’m going to throw the Exp. Share on Gelding. He is twenty levels behind. As a responsible trainer who is absolutely not going to be his leading cause of death, I wish to correct that imbalance.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, you wanted me for something.
Tumblr media
Free stuff! Free stuff I actually want! Thank you Professor Juniper, I will remember this the next time I complain about you interrupting my wanderings with things like story progression!
Tumblr media
ffs guys, I just want to hit the PokeCenter. Could you stop stealing things for five scenes?
Could you also stop having things like Watchdogs? I do not enjoy fighting such creatures, as they make me needlessly paranoid and cast lingering glances at the empty spots in my roster.
Tumblr media
Yo, I have a bike! I didn’t think you got that so early in this one. Thank you, random old person. My bridge-traversing ways are forever in your debt. Oh, wait, not so random. He runs a Day Care.
The store in this town does not sell Ultra Balls.
I’m not going to stock up too much, just in case healing items become as desirable as I think they might in the future, but I grab thirty Poke Balls and twenty Great Balls. I might not need them, but I don’t want to be thrown into a situation where the one thing I can catch on a route is a legendary, and I can’t catch it.
Having said that, there will be no more legendaries anywhere in the rest of the map.
But okay, healed up, time to head back to the Resort and maybe meet lucky number six.
Tumblr media
[Pictured above: First of the things not caught in Desert Resort]
I need to make a note to enjoy myself properly with the Randomizer at some point. Part of me is a little sad that my first experience is being spent on a Nuzlocke run.
Then the rest of me considers my self control, and considers that having some clear boundaries the first time out isn’t such a bad thing.
Tumblr media
-rubs hands together-
Show me something good, game.
Tumblr media
Excuse me, what in the fuck.
Quick Ball?
Yeah, that’s a strong no.
Ptera will chomp right through it. I don’t know its moves. Fire would murder Batman and Palm, but Frogger doesn’t have anything that wouldn’t murder Entei. Risking Gelding feels wrong, but Gelding has the best Type for this.
Okay, buddy.
Try. Not to die.
Entei has Bite and Ember.
Gelding at 13 HP put Entei just into the orange. So.
I’m going to use up my Premier Balls, because if it comes down to it, I do have a couple of Timer Balls. I don’t think I can do anything to damage it further without risking death on one side. Besides, who knows, maybe one will work.
(No.)
Entei also has Leer.
That’s a much scarier move when it has all the time in the world to use it.
...And it has Roar.
Oh please no. Do not let this fool’s errand end that way.
I’ve watched a Ultra Ball roll three times twice now. This is torture.
I am really glad Roar keeps failing, but I don’t know enough about why it is to know if that will continue or not. Usually with things in the wild, Roar just ends the fight, and I don’t have any Ability that I know of to counter it.
I have one Ultra Ball left.
Aaaaaand it’s gone.
Sigh.
Thanks, Professor Juniper.
Tumblr media
Holy fuck, casual Heal Ball of despair for the win.
Tumblr media
What to call you, what to call you...
You have a cloud on your back... Cloud is a Final Fantasy character... F is for... Fido!
Good dog!
Do you know what that means?
Tumblr media
I have six!
Time for healing and grinding and finding out what non-legendary things I could have gotten instead, not that I would have preferred less heart stress in rounding out my team!
Having a Fire type is also really, really useful. I tend to use Fire as my multipurpose enforcers, especially against things like Electric types, so Fido is a high quality boon.
Tumblr media
Is this Randomizer accidentally set to Badass Mode?
There’s also Altaria here. The first non-heart eyes option is Lickitung. Look at all these things that aren’t legendaries. Of course, now I’ve been spoiled, and just want to run ahead to the next area where I can catch a thing again. I want to know what it will be. The curiosity. It drives progress.
I found a Fire Stone in the Resort. This is worth mentioning because out of the options, a Fire Stone is the evolutionary stone I already chose to have in my collection.
A lot of my choices don’t seem to result in anything nearly as helpful as I intended for them.
I forgot out big the Resort area is. Or maybe it just feels larger because all the sand kills visibility.
Tumblr media
I have no memory of this place.
Wait. Something about... the Fire/Bug type Alder has? Champion’s name is Alder, right? I think at some point in the game you can come across that somewhere in here? Maybe?
I dunno, let’s explore.
Still Relic Castle, so nothing to catch here, sadly.
Tumblr media
Is this the way out if you go down the quick sand portals on the other side? Probably.
Aw, there’s Kangaskhan down here. I’ve never played through a game with one of those. I think I always trade to get it. That would have been cool.
Not that I’m judging Fido’s place in the team or anything. I am just providing color commentary.
There’s also Vanillish.
I need an area where I can catch something again. All this cool stuff is tormenting me.
The problem with Ptera being so strong, and resisting the Sandstorm, is that I’m coming up short on a compelling reason to swap him out for someone else. He’s just so perfectly competent.
Resort also has Mareep. So many treasures.
I’m trying to hit all the trainers here, but I think I’m mostly making myself lost.
Tumblr media
Would this randomized mode perhaps like to chill?
It’s another Relic Castle one, so I don’t get to try to catch it, but honestly, what in the fuck. I am going to run out of legendaries to catch by my sixth badge at this rate.
...Well. Probably not. I don’t care to do the math on that, but there are kind of a lot of legendaries at this point. But still, what the heck.
Oh hey, a Walrein! That’s not a legendary! What a twist.
I should consider switching Ptera’s spot more strongly. He is four levels higher than the next highest.
Tumblr media
Hello, there.
So it hasn’t really come up, but I think the rules I’m choosing to use are that I can use gift pokemon, but only if they’re randomized. I’m not sure if the fossils will be their usual selves or not. I’m going to pick the Cover Fossil either way, since Ptera doesn’t need to have an insecurity added to life, but it would be neat if it turned out to be something new.
Ugh, but that would mean going all the way back to the fossil gym.
...When do I get Fly?
Eh, I have six at the moment anyway. There’s no rush.
...
Tumblr media
I need to know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No such luck. Dear turtle friend, were this a normal run, you would be a grand addition, and I would love you muchly, but as we are doing what we’re doing here, you must go unnamed and into a box. Fear not, you are not dead, merely forever frozen and unused.
Back to Resort grinding.
(Hooray for bicycles.)
Tumblr media
Relic Castle continues to astound.
This is so awesome. I hope whoever programmed Randomizer is out living their best life.
Okay, Ptera’s 35. I need to give something else a chance. Palm, show me what you’re made of and train up our new legendary pals. Though as long as I’m doing this in a specific area... I mean, I won’t go out of my way to EV train, but Palm is already swimming upstream with his Nature. Maybe I’ll just give him a level and switch over to Frogger.
Not that I even remember what any of these things dish out. HP, maybe?
...Ptera really is the best thing on my team to manage this stuff. Maybe I should just go deal with the next gym.
Batman, how about you go ahead and murder a bunch of Cresselia for me. It’ll be our bonding experience. You like killing Psychic things, right? I seem to recall something about our first meeting...
No, okay, fine, I won’t hold that grudge. We’re partners now, and that’s all that matters.
On fourth thought, I’m just gonna stay upstairs and let Frogger take out Entei when Fido isn’t clearing out the Budew. Gelding’s almost 30, so I won’t feel obligated to keep the Exp. Share on for much longer.
Tumblr media
Fido is at a level where this is actually annoying. My kingdom for a legendary that learns good moves early. Ember is just not all that great, and Budew’s Water Sport is annoying to work through.
Roar keeps not working for the wild Entei. I have no idea why that is, but it’s convenient. Having my free exp scare me away every other time would be frustrating as heck.
Eh, Fido learned Fire Spin. Yay. Its leading quality is being slightly more appealing to me than Roar.
Wait a moment. Fido. I didn’t take a look at what you’re like. I was so excited to have six that I completely forgot to check up on you.
Tumblr media
Fido is Sassy and often dozes off. What that means is largely lost on me, but in general losing out on some Speed to up a Defense stat is okay in my book. The ability never had the option of being something else, I don’t think.
A belated welcome, doggo.
...Good grief you need better moves.
...It learned Stomp.
Okay, everyone’s 30 or higher, time to return to the plot.
Tumblr media
Wow, I did not expect that. It’s so weird when random NPCs just hand out HMs.
I’d forgotten about the stadium trainers. I think every day they have different sports going on, and each set contains trainers. I have vague memories of grinding using them. ..I probably could have just hung around here instead of Relic Castle.
Oh well, more levels for me.
Tumblr media
Is this where we have our Ferris Wheel thing?
(I remember so little of these games, yet N possibly having a thing for the protagonist has stuck in the consciousness of the internet for so long that it is what sticks.)
Tumblr media
Yeah, this happens.
Tumblr media
Tale as old as time.
I want N’s hat. Will Pokemon Go make his outfit available at some point? That would be neat. The protagonist gear always looks a bit dorky. Unlike turtlenecks and button-up shirts.
He has a nice hat.
Tumblr media
Elesa, why does your gym look like this. It makes me want to go play laser tag.
Tumblr media
Time for some exp I don’t really need.
Nimbasa has a lot going for it. I think this is the generation where I realized how you could breed things and EV train them, so I spent a lot of time messing around with the subway features. I wasn’t very good. I think I wanted my trainer card to reach a higher tier of color?
Yeah, that didn’t work. It was all confusing, and mostly I just wasn’t good enough at coming up with strategies. Or copying them efficiently.
...Are there really only two trainers here? And the other sport court has a game in progress. Dang it.
Tumblr media
I don’t remember if I have to participate in the Pokemon Musical.
I know I don’t wanna.
Bianca is walking me inward. This does not bode well.
I have a Prop Case now.
Tumblr media
What part of “I don’t wanna” is so hard to understand. ;-;
Gelding, you want to put on a show? You’re probably most likely to be swapped out if I see anything I like in future routes, so we should treasure our time together while we can.
By which I mean we will participate in mutual suffering.
Tumblr media
It’s an expression of love, Gelding.
Bianca leaves before I’m asked to do anything else. Do I stay and check it off the list, or flee and hope that this is not necessary to progress?
Tumblr media
...Maybe I will go back inside.
Tumblr media
Dude, all I remember about this encounter is that Elesa is better than you. And most everyone else. It’s time for Bianca to lay proper claim to her independence, right?
Tumblr media
...Wait, this ends well?
Right, I guess all the truly terrible parenting has to be saved up for N.
Congrats, Bianca!
I think I’ll actually go ahead and deal with the gym now.
...No, I won’t. I want to check and see if I have access to the other routes yet. Mayhaps it is time to catch things. Or meet Alder. That’s his name, I think. I think we see him for the first time on the route to the left. So I shall go right.
Tumblr media
Huh. This is a fun thing.
The next badge probably makes Strength usable outside of battle. So if I go and do the gym, I’ll have the choice between two spots of grass. Darker grass doesn’t necessarily have better stuff, because it’s all random, but it will have things of higher levels, which means less grinding.
...I’m gonna check out the other side. Possibly get a badge.
Then will come the decision.
Which may or may not be dependent on how much I want to put off giving something on my team Strength.
Tumblr media
Here, things do not appear to be nearly so complicated.
There is dark grass, but I think it’s impossible to get to without walking through the normal grass. Maybe I’ll find something in the normal grass on this side, then use Strength and deal in the dark grass on the other side.
Plan? Plan.
...Still largely dependent on what I have that can learn Strength.
I guess that’s one nice thing about these legendaries with the awkward movesets. Fido can probably handle not fainting our new teammate. Probably.
Tumblr media
...Hey Gelding guess what you get to stay.
Tumblr media
I’m gonna name you Bandit. If we’re both very lucky, we’ll never, ever use you.
Next thing to pop up in the grass is a Maractus, then a Bonsly. This is like. A sane route. Weird.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, over in the dark grass.
Chikorita, Munna... Samurott.
By the standards of this run, I’d still call it pretty sane. The Samurott is darn near level appropriate. I don’t know what I would have picked out of this set. Bandit has some proper charm. That’s hard to say no to in the midst of such chaos.
OH!
Bandit can learn Strength!
Awesome!
Who’s a good girl? You’re a good girl!
Gym time!
Tumblr media
This makes me want to hit the arcade so bad.
I haven’t really decided what to use here. Fido was the assumption, but Fido’s moveset is terrible. I think half the things in here are likely to have Static, and its only decent moves are all physical attacks.
Gelding shouldn’t go anywhere near anything here.
Ptera would probably be fine, but his Defense is abysmal, so all it would take is one round of not being fine to ruin that.
Batman would be pretty okay all around, but not a great damage dealer. She does know Headbutt, though...
Palm I’m paranoid about letting loose against things he doesn’t have a Type advantage with, but I think he’d mostly be okay. I just don’t want to risk my precious Breloom coming to harm.
...Fido and Frogger will have to do, I think.
Tumblr media
What even is the deal with this gym. Elesa has so much style that it would cause poisoning in a real world setting.
The trainers so far have dealt in mid-20s pokes. Elesa’s might hit 30, but my guess would be that 28 might be closer to the mark.
...Elesa’s gym is full of neon, rich kids, and roller coasters, and I just love it so very much. And Ember isn’t doing too shabbily. I would still prefer having something better to work with, but as long as Emolga are so popular, Frogger’s not the best choice, so it’s good that Fido can put in the proper work.
Tumblr media
Can I say for the hundredth time how much I love the work they put into the gyms in this gen? Because it is one of my primary joys of the games. Pokemon are great and all, but the aesthetic.
Firs up is a level 25 Emolga. With Volt Switch, so that will leave the stage after one Ember to let loose a different level 25 Emolga. Who will also use Volt Switch, bringing the first Emolga back out. That Emolga faints, Fido grows to level 34, and time to find out if that’s enough to push the second Emolga into fainting with two Embers instead of three. Apparently there’s a Special Defense difference between the beasts.
Yep, that did it. Emolgas down, and I’ll switch to Frogger for the Zebstrika.
Dang, I was off. It’s level 27.
Frogger downs it, getting up to 34 as well, and we have another relatively painless gym experience!
Tumblr media
Go team!
Elesa also promises to deal with the pesky bridge problem I didn’t bother screencapping. I think the next Leader is a Ground type. Cowboy dude who has to be pestered into letting pedestrians use the drawbridge.
But that will have to wait for next time!

\Reconciliation: Meteor Mash/
It had only been the first day of training, but honestly Nate was being put through the ringer. 4 AM wakeup, no breakfast until 7 AM. Between 4 and 7 Nate and Lucario worked on one of the most bizarre training methods to date: carrying sleeping Graveler. Each of them had to carry one in their arms, using the skill of aura enhancement (thankfully the only thing Nate really practiced since his last visit with Riley) to help support their bodies as they moved from one cave to another. Proper posture, lift from the legs, keep a straight back the entire way through. That part was easy (or easier) for Nate. The hard part was making sure they stayed asleep during the entire trek. That required paying attention to another pokemon’s aura for sustained periods of time. That part he sucked at.
Unfortunately, Lucario was preoccupied with his own Graveler to help out, though unfortunately for them, whenever Nate messed up, the both of them had to drop the rock types and grab a fresh new pair. On the first day, Nate woke up about five before Lucario started to get irritated, though that resulted in Lucario not paying attention to how loud his footsteps were, resulting in him waking up a whole group of them, forcing the duo to stop early. Lucario learned his lesson quickly after that.
Afterwards was breakfast, which turned out to be rather boring oatmeal and orange juice most of the time, though Nate was counting the days until he could make pancakes. That meant he had to go down to the port and buy whatever pancake mix or batter the local port store had to offer and figure out a time for him to go do that. Still, it was incentive enough to eat through boring oat breakfast for the other six days.
After breakfast was meditation for an hour, something that Riley was rather strict about. Given that the type of meditation they were doing was not some spiritual whateverahoozit but actually working to expand one’s aura sense, Nate couldn’t even drift away for a moment before Riley sent him a… something. Honestly he wasn’t sure what it was, but it was the aura meditation version of an intense glare, something that he could feel way too easily. Unfortunately he couldn’t figure out a way to try it himself before Riley just sent him another one, so he just did his best to actually focus.
Next was about two hours of cardio, but it was like cardio on the most rugged terrain in existence and on steroids. It was segmented into two alternating steps: first pure cardio on the rugged terrain, with both pokemon and trainer tasked to keep their attention on the other the entire time. After about fifteen minutes, they were allowed to use Aura to enhance their bodies, still keeping track of each other. This was something Nate was pretty fine with, since he quickly realized that this would help with tracking and chasing criminals on the run. Still, it was exhausting, even with the use of aura half the time! Between this and the Gravelers, Nate soon realized that even using this aura enhancement stuff was draining on his stamina.
After the cardio was some actual fun stuff, regular old training! Nate was somewhat surprised the first time Riley mentioned it, but it didn’t take long for him to realize that Riley was still a trainer too, and had a lot more pokemon than he expected. Most of them were fully evolved, and Nate could easily see that they were all extremely powerful. Honestly, this was a real treat for Nate! Getting to train with such an experienced trainer was fantastic. Plus, it allowed for Nate to change up his training framework, giving a bit more focus to Lucario now in the hopes of bonding. That, of course, was appreciated.
By 10:00, Nate and Lucario were tasked with assisting Riley in preparing lunch; most of the work was menial labor and errands, but it was a nice break from a lot of intense physical training. Still, Riley somehow managed to incorporate training, tasking Nate to focus on sensing the world around them, keeping not of any people or pokemon they happen to be nearby and work to understand how each one feels. Lucario was tasked to focus on Nate’s own aura in the hopes of improving telepathy. Nate assumed that he would get this sort of task later, but apparently he needed more general sensing training first.
After lunch was just as intense as before, but this this time the focus was different. Nate and Lucario were tasked to work on controlling and Aura Sphere with precision, the two of them more or less on equal footing with this particular skill. It was a somewhat simple concept, but a bit harder in practice. First, create a small aura sphere, something that wouldn’t hurt (too much) if let loose. Then, practice firing it. Basic aura sphere practice. The next part, however, was a bit more difficult. They had to stop it before it hit the nearest wall! Usually Aura Spheres didn’t miss because they could lock on to an opponent’s aura, guaranteeing a hit like a heat-seeking missile. However, there wasn’t an aura to lock onto. Instead, they had to focus their attention onto the sphere itself, then fire it at normal speed before forcing it to stop!
Nate couldn’t help but feel that this could have been done easier.
This kept going until four, which afterwards Nate and Lucario were tasked to help prepare dinner, using some of the ingredients they had collected earlier. After dinner was more training, although this time it was something special.
Riley and his Lucario led Nate and Lucario back to the same arena as before, although this time the guardian did not activate the barrier. It was there that the aura guardian took out one of his pokeballs, revealing a metal behemoth that Nate quickly recognized.
“I didn’t know ya had a Metagross.”
“I do,” The guardian responded, giving the pokemon a pat on one of it’s blue legs. “It was my fifth pokemon, in fact, back when I started my own trainer’s journey.”
The prospect of hearing about Riley’s journey intrigued Nate. From what he had seen as of late, all of his pokemon were super strong! “Wait, so you challenged the Sinnoh league?”
“Of course. The league wasn’t as robust as it is now, but it was still there and prominent. I even managed to obtain one of the pokedex prototypes, although I guess it was only because I had a few connections.”
“Wait… you have a pokedex?” Man, Riley was full of surprises! “Did ya get it from Rowan? Who else got a pokedex from back then? Did ya have any awesome battles? Any rivals?” Man, now Nate was having a ton of questions.
“Nate, please. I didn’t bring you here to talk about my past. If you want, we can talk about it later. Right now, we need to start your training.”
“Oh, right! Sorry,” Nate apologized as began rubbing the back of his head.
“Now, I want the both of you to watch closely.” With that, the aura guardian turned to Metagross and his Lucario. “Lucario, set up the targets.”
With a powerful slam, Riley’s Lucario slammed her fists downward, producing a series of Stone Edges that rose above the ground, creating a multitude of hardened stone targets.
“Thank you Lucario. Now, Metagross, Meteor Mash.”
Metagross emitted a powerful metallic shriek, summoning blue and white energy around it’s two front fists before slamming into multiple stone pillars, shattering them instantly upon impact as sparks as what looked like stars shot out with each impact. It was something Nate had seen before, having observed Steven’s Metagross before a few times. Still, it was an impressive spectacle to see.
“That’s one strong meteor mash. Though I’m not sure why ya wanted me to see it…”
“Patience, Nate. Metagross will be one of your mentors for these sessions, along with Lucario.” Turning to his trusted partner, Riley gave her a nod, to which she responded in kind. Dropping back into a fighting stance, the older Lucario summoned that same energy that had once enveloped Metagross, most of it concentrating around one of her fists. Her aura began to flare up and pulsate, as her tendrils now began to flow with Aura. Without any warning, she moved, quickly, but not as quick as a Bullet Punch or an Extreme Speed, rushing towards the remaining rocks and slamming her fist into the first one, shattering it as sparks and stars appeared around her fist. Quickly, she summoned another one on her other arm, and with two of them she began pummeling rock after rock, before summoning that same blue energy around her leg to kick one, sending the top of the pillar flying into the wall. Next, she enveloped her entire body with this Steel Type energy, rushing towards the last pillar and shattering it with a mix of a tackle and an elbow, stars now enveloping her as she gracefully stopped and landed in front of Nate’s Lucario. The former stood in awe at the skill and technique used with such a move. This was truly a move he wanted to learn.
Nate was in awe too, but as she finished, the actor blinked twice, before turning back to Riley. “Wait… your Lucario knows Meteor Mash?”
“Yes. She actually has known it for some time.”
“… are you secretly rich or something and didn’t tell me about it? I mean, Meteor Mash on Lucario is super rare! Not to mention it’s all the rage these days! I saw it on Breeders Magazine, an apparently the only way to get it is to either get a Riolu who has a Smeargle for a dad, and that Smeargle had to Sketch Meteor Mash from another pokemon! Most breeders aren’t even in the business of teaching that move to a Lucario or Riolu either, meanin it’s pretty much impossible to get a Lucario that’s learned it!”
Riley was rather surprised at Nate’s conclusion. Yes, he was… a bit wealthier than he let on, but he never engaged in the practice of trying to purchase such a tutor. “No no no, that’s not the case at all. In fact, Lucario somehow learned it on her own.”
“Wait… what?” Ok was his Lucario special or something like that?
“I assume she learned it through a mix of training with Metagross and training with the local pack. It may be possible that one of them learned it or obtained it through a smeargle, but even I don’t come in contact with her pack often. Besides, that doesn’t matter as much. What matters is that this is something I want you and your Lucario to work on.”
Nate and Lucario locked eyes at each other, before looking at Riley and his two pokemon. “Wait… you’re gonna teach it to us?”
“Of course! I figured this may be a bonding experience. Something the two of you can focus on together, given that the two of you have different skill levels when it comes to aura training.”
Riley definitely had a good point, and who could pass up on an offer like that? Turning to Lucario, Nate pumped his fist up into the air in excitement. “Ya hear that buddy? You’re gonna learn Meteor Mash!” He was about to go in for a celebratory hug before realizing that he forgot to ask Lucario if he wanted to learn. “I mean…” Nate began to ask, calming himself down a bit, “do ya wanna learn Meteor Mash?”
Lucario looked at Nate, before giving a small huff and a larger smile, putting out his fist in front of Nate for the old tradition of a fist bump. Nate quickly grew a wider smile and gave his partner another fist bump, before pumping his fist towards Riley. “Alright then, we accept!”
“I knew you two would. Now, I want you to watch closely again. Lucario, Metagross, Meteor Mash.”

Honey GLITched: The Quest
[Honey wasn’t really paying attention as she went from ship... to ship… to ship… With the sun starting to set on the horizon, just how far away was Serenity Island anyway? She didn’t mind though. As Oceanview had reintroduced her to the sweet fragrance of the salt air after all her time around swamp and car fumes, she could have ridden all night. The breeze blowing her bangs back as she stood on the deck to watch the waves rise up along the side of the boat, spotting shadows beneath the surface. Each terminal she wandered the crowds by the ferry with the phone to her ear as she tried to call home, but only now did her mother pick up.]
Mom:
Hey, Honey~! Are you having fun yet? We were starting to worry about you.
Honey:
[If they were worried now, she wasn’t sure how they’d feel to know about the day she’d been having.] I’m sorry, I should have called sooner. I’ve… made a few friends? And I’ve got lots of Pokemon now. I guess it’s more fun now that I’m getting into it. I finally got my first badge!
Mom:
Oh, Honey, that’s wonderful! [Her voice becomes muffled as she gives the news to her husband] I can’t wait for you to show us all your new friends. We should celebrate. What would you like for dinner?
Honey:
Um… About that? Part of the reason I wanted to call you is because I don’t think I’m going to make it home tonight.
Dad:
Why not?
Honey:
[Oh snap, she did not expect that.] H-hi, Daddy~! Um… W-well I’m actually on my way to Serenity Island for a d-delivery! For Professor Willow. He didn’t say what exactly, but he wanted me to meet him at his other lab, I think?
Dad:
[Starts laughing as he can be heard saying something to her mother.] Serenity Island? But Honey, that’s practically right next door! He probably meant when you came back this way.
Honey:
Wh-what?! Aww gees.... I guess I’ll be there soon. Hey, when I get home, can we um... talk?
Mom:
[Nod so amused now.] About what? Did something happen?
Honey:
I don’t know, I’ve just been thinking about stuff today is all. Going on my own adventures just reminded me of some of Grandpa’s stories. Like with me helping the professor and meeting some of Tunod’s leaders, it’s kind of exciting seeing it first hand.
Dad:
Don’t worry, we just like to know you’re safe. We’ll see if we can dig up some old photo albums before you get home.
Honey:
Thanks, I’d appreciate it. [Click.]
=+=
[Honey was glad to sleep in her own bed after the day long day, and even finally got the chance to clean up. She still shuddered to think about that dreadful swamp, but now that she knew what it was like she could prepare to ever go back there. Experience, her mother teased. At least talking to her parents about the POSSIBILITY of another universe, like the one her grandparents had supposedly once traveled to, eased her mind. Her Mom even said how she’d met one of their friend’s from the other side when she was really little. Not that she knew anything about him besides the old photograph they had when “the gang” was all together all those years ago. Not that she ever traveled either, but the massive cracks over Alola were very uncommon compared to when her parents were kids. Honey’s Dad wasn’t quite convinced they hadn’t made it up. After all, the cracks were in the sky, how were either of them able to reach one? And who was to say their friend “went home” wasn’t just a careful way to dodge telling a curious child that a dear friend had been killed? Considering Mr. Nile’s line of work and all...
On the note of danger, Honey still didn’t tell them about her “slipping,” as she couldn’t bear to make them worry any more than they already did. She knew better than to hide the incident at the ruins from them though. Meeting with Blake, the INVENTOR, and some strange men calling themselves Team Fusion. Sad to think that helping an Elite fight vandals was considered the less worrisome between the two. Just one more thing she’d need to talk to Professor Willow about in the morning.
The next day Honey got up early, early for her anyway, and wandered casually toward Professor Willow’s Lab as she’d been instructed. The sun was already bright and cheery, perfect weather for an adventure as her father liked to say. If only he knew what sort of adventure she had ahead of her. Still, after getting quite a bit of “experience” under her belt, and having the little bit of information and assurance from Luke, she felt she was ready for whatever the new day had in store for her. …. Which fate deemed was to start right that moment.]
Honey:
[Confused as she sees the Professor had some company this morning. Walks up behind the unmistakable young man in the white suit he’s talking to.] Good morning?
Willow:
Good morning, Honey! It’s good to see you again. Thank you for coming by.
Blake:
[What a pleasant surprise as he turns around.] Honey! [She seems to only blink at him in confusion causing the joy to his expression start to droop.] It’s, uh… It’s Blake, from Tunod’s Elite Four? We just met yesterday.
Honey:
[Slight giggle] I know who you are. I just wasn’t expecting to find you here of all places. A lot happened after you left yesterday.
Blake:
[Curious.] Nothing too terrible, I hope?
Honey:
[OH WHERE TO BEGIN?! She just kind of gives him a nervous grin as she tries to think how to answer that before shaking her head.] I’ve just had a lot on my mind. I’m in the process of replacing my entire team. [Adds quickly] Not that anything happened to them, it just wasn’t working out like I hoped.
Blake:
Ah, that’s too bad, then. [Putting on his best authoritative tone] While it is always nice to train your favorites, it’s also smart to think about the road ahead. Especially for the danger that’s been happening lately. That’s why I’m here actually, I was hoping that you might assist me today. [A bit of a shy glance to Willow for his approval before admitting a bit more naturally.] I realized after that grunt got away that perhaps I could use a hand when dealing with Team Fusion. Would you-?
Honey:
Sure I can! I’ll need to grab some things before we go, if that’s okay.
Willow:
[Well that seemed to cheer the boy up. Shouldn’t be so amused to just listen to them and clears his throat to get their attention.] Good to hear then. I was just telling Blake how Team Fusion has been seen poking around the Haunted Isle. It’s a small but notorious place just off the coast of Serenity Island. When I heard from Spark you’d already gotten your first badge, I had hoped you might be up for the challenge.
Blake:
[Nods before adding onto the information.] They could be defacing the ruins out there, or worse, if we learned anything from yesterday. Since you’ve decided you’re up for it, I will meet you at the port in Serenity Island. I hope to see you soon.
Honey:
Will do~! [She smiles to herself as she watches him leave, only to give a slight jump as she turns back to the professor.] What?
Willow:
[Still amused, just shakes his head] It’s nothing, my dear, just happy for you. I hate to keep asking you to run errands for me, but I have another favor for you.
Honey:
I still work for you, not him. What can I do for you?
Willow:
Good to hear then. The next gym you’ll be going to is in Seaspray Town, and I need to deliver a pressure sensor to the Seaspray Dam. [Gives her an item capsule that’s labeled SENSOR for her convenience. Very important looking indeed.] When you get there, you’ll need to give it to Flo, the manager of Seaspray Dam. In return, I’m going to give you access to Glenwood’s secret treasure, the Forlorn Cape. It’s my Pokemon Sanctuary only a few in town even know about. [He gives her a look that’s more of a command than the suggestion he offers] Though it sounds like you may want to take a few for your journey if you plan to stand up to Team Fusion.
Honey:
[She takes the Hidden Machine for Cut and looks up to him with wonder and bewilderment] Thank you… I don’t even know what to say.
Willow:
You’ve said enough. I also heard from Spark last night what you did for him at the Power Plant, and we both agree you seem to have a lot of potential for your journey. And now that even Blake, [somewhat mockingly of the young man’s prideful introduction] member of the Elite Four, has come looking for you, I have a feeling you’re going to be very important in what’s to come.
Honey:
And… what’s to come, professor? … Professor? [Her mouth hangs slightly open as she stares up at him, his eyes glazed over as if he doesn’t even see her. She slips the HM into her bag and waves a hand in front of his face] Oh, not you too! Professor Willow?!
Willow:
[Thankfully, he seems to snap out of it, though he’s clearly lost as to what he was doing before then. Looks around the room, then down to her with a bit of pleasant surprise.] Oh, hello, Honey! Did you want to see how much progress you’ve made?
Honey:
[Something in his voice suddenly seems off, but she’s not exactly sure why. Warily] That’s… um… You were saying something about that, I think?
Willow:
Well, according to our last report, it would appear you’ve met seven Pokemon so far. So for your Pokedex I would say you should go to some grassy areas and look for Pokemon more carefully.
Honey:
Oh… Is that all?
Willow:
… [He’s not sure actually, and rubs a hand alongside his temple as he thinks it over. Somewhat concerned as he has a feeling there was something else that’s escaped him.] Yes, I suppose so. Just be careful out there. I hope to hear from you after your delivery.
Honey:
[Is very worried about him, but as Luke said, no one else seemed to notice these things but her. Perhaps she should just leave the Professor alone, and maybe he’ll be alright. That’s what happened to the INVENTOR after she’d left him, right? Tries to give him a smile] Alright, I promise.
=+=
[After replenishing the slots on her belt, and an hour long training session in the Milkshake Swamp, Honey felt she was finally ready to take on some Team Fusion grunts. Or so she hoped. As she made her way back to Oceanview, she couldn’t help but take one long look back at the swamp’s odd ruins. She’d passed it several times that morning, more of passing through than anything, but she was more than glad to see that nothing had happened this time. Not even minor “slips” that should could tell… unless she was just getting used to all this weirdness enough to ignore it. Whatever the case, she could only hope that her smooth practice session would carry over to the Haunted Isle, as the last thing either her or Blake needed was for her to disappear in the middle of a confrontation.]
Honey:
[A soft sigh as she starts to leave the ancient pillars once again] I sure hope Luke keeps his promise…
=+=
[Honey could only hope it was a sign of his extremely good patience, and not because time had frozen again, that Blake was found calmly waiting for her at the dock. He rose from his seat by the railing quite happily to see her.]
Blake:
Ah, you made it! Are you and your new team ready for action? We don’t know what we’re in for.
Honey:
[Playfully] Aye, aye, sir! I’ve a feeling I’m more prepared than you are.
Blake:
Heh, what’s that supposed to mean?
Honey:
I’m not sure how to explain, it just seems like weird things happen only after you leave the room. I’m starting to think you do it on purpose.
Blake:
Maybe I’ll have you leave first next time, and we’ll see what happens. [Rather charmingly steps aside to motion her passage] After you?
[Honey fights the urge to squeak, and only gives him a sly glance as she steps passed him with confidence to board their lovely little vessel. She was starting to feel like quite the important little lady today and just gleamed as she peered around the high class cabin. After settling in, the boat gives a soft rocking as it begins to bob and jump along the waves.]
Honey:
[Not to be rude, but it certainly didn’t ride as smoothly as she might have hoped.] Are you sure you’ve ever driven one of these?
Blake:
Huh? [glances back at her] Of course I have. It’s my boat, after all. [Chuckling to himself as he turns his eyes back to the Tunod Sea.] It’s just… looking pretty rough out there. That’s all. [After getting things straight, he glances back again briefly] You’re a very brave girl, Honey. According to Professor Willow, you don’t hesitate when things get important.
Honey:
Well, not if it’s important. There’s lots of thi- [she braces herself as the boat gives a jump, feeling for a moment as if it briefly left the water.] Um… Lots of things that I…
Blake:
[It’s not just her this time, and he can understand her nervousness. A wary glance at the darkening skies is outright baffling.] What in the…? Do you see that?
Honey:
[Very VERY worried right now.] It feels like there’s a storm rolling in.
Blake:
Not “rolling in.” The weather just turned out of nowhere. [Calls back to her with a bark of command] Better buckle down. Don’t you worry, Honey, I’ll get us there safe! [Softly to himself, and much less confident as he tries to peer through the now pouring rain] The boat might not be…

CRRRRAAASSSHHHHHHHHH!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A lot of jumping around in this, but we're also FINALLY getting into the plot. Time to kick things up a notch. o.O;;
Also, I get the feeling that Honey's not really a "newbie" to being a trainer per se. Her family's been around enough Pokemon it's more like when you see people who didn't get their driver's license until late because their family's security and / or finances made it so they wouldn't need one until they needed it. Like in Honey's case, a job where she'd need her own Pokemon for once.
Meet Pokemon Trainer SEO ‘ MIMI ‘ HYEMI. Born JANUARY 10, currently 18. She’s GOLDENROD CITY born and has recently been given a PANCHAM(M)and x2 LUXURY BALLS and a x2 MAX REVIVES.
‶ Having a father as president of the Goldenrod Department Store and a mother as an aide for one of Johto’s Pokémon professor had it’s perks. For starters, Hyemi was raised not only by her parents, but their Pokémon pitched it as well at times…… ″
In elementary school, whenever her parents were busy, her mother’s Chansey helped her wake up and get ready for school, while her father’s Machoke would walk her to and from. Her mother’s Spinda would play with her after school, the two tripping over their own two feet and giggling wildly afterward. The countless of times when they’d help around with Hyemi goes on and on really. But, being surrounded by Pokémon practically from birth would make anyone yearn to have one of their own. Except Hyemi.
From the start, she knew that Pokémon were more than often used for one thing: battling. It never appealed to her, however. Neither did the flashy costumes and move sets during contests. Hyemi was always a bright and smart child, usually seen reading her mothers notebooks in the playground rather than mingling with others her age. Perhaps a researcher or a professor would be her calling. Still, nothing ever really made her think, “This is my passion and I will strive to achieve it.” It wasn’t like her parents were against whatever she wanted to be, either. They knew Hyemi was meant to have a career with Pokémon by her side, but they also didn’t want to pressure her into anything she would grow to dislike. They her do her own thing. So, while witnessing those around her entered their preteen years and obtained their first Pokémon to start on their journey, Hyemi happily watched from afar, clutching a handwritten notebook that she currently had her brain wrapped around.
Another perk was that her father would travel from region to region on business trips to see which items the department store could sell that weren’t native to Johto. Naturally, Hyemi would beg to tag along. And if it was during a weekend or when school wasn’t in session, her father would allow it. It was a trip to Alola when she was fourteen that Hyemi had her first whack at a Pokémon battle. While her father stayed in Malie City, her mother was asked to accompany Johto’s and Alola’s professors for some research in Ula’ula Meadow; Hyemi chose to trail behind her mother. Even through her teenage years, there was still that curiosity that maintained in her heart. Roaming through the wild, red flowers, she eventually was far enough from the adults and finally settled down amongst the vegetation to admire the nature around her. Not even a few minutes after did she hear a rustling to her side. It was then that a small, floating Pokémon with two knobs sprouting from the top of it’s body approached her. It smiled at her and hinted at wanting to play. Now, it had been some time that she actually played with any Pokémon, but it was certainly too cute to say no too.
They played several rounds of hide-and-seek, even tag, laughter filling the air, and within due time, she had befriended Cosmog. As the two lied down for some rest, Hyemi only noticed just how much far she was away from the others, but she didn’t mind. She was having too much fun to care about anything at the time. Another rustling sound was heard, peaking Hyemi and Cosmog’s interest, expecting another friend to play with them. Instead, they were face with a passing by Sneasel, and it’s only intention was to harm the poor Nebula Pokémon. Afraid and unsure of what to do, Hyemi could only stand and watch as the awful bully tried to swipe at Cosmog. Suddenly, an idea hit her. It was a crazy one, without a doubt, but she had to do something. She immediately rushed to find her mother and the others, thankfully spotting them where she last saw them. Frantic, she asked around for a Pokéball, any Pokéball. Everyone questioned her need for one, not wanting to oblige just yet. They even told her to calm down and explain what was going on before giving her what she asked for. “There’s no time, Cosmog is in danger!” Hyemi took it upon herself to reach for and grab a Pokéball that was found idly resting in the Alolan professor’s opened duffle bag, and ran back to fight back the Sneasel. She found them still in a chase, Cosmog just barely dodging the Sneasel’s claws. Hyemi throw the Pokéball in her hands, and out came a Rowlet, facing her with a puzzled expression. They stared at each other for a moment, even tilting their heads before Hyemi snapped back into reality, turned the Rowlet around, and pointed at the Sneasel. “Okay, you….do your thing! Save Cosmog!” The following sequence of events wasn’t exactly how Hyemi played it out in her head. In fact, when the Rowlet waddled his way to the Sneasel, they exchanged a long moment of sience, eyes locked with the other, and then the Sneasel proceeded to slash once at the Rowlet, knocking it backward and on the brink of fainting. Hyemi scooped up the Grass Quill Pokémon in her arms, not wanthing him to get hurt any further. The Sneasel noticed this and headed straight for Hyemi, causing the girl to turn around and run the other. In that moment, she watched a familiar looking Arcanine leap over her and fired a warning Will-o-wisp at the bully. The Sneasel was startled and ended up running away, the Arcanine making his way towards to comfort a shaken up Hyemi.
After Hyemi returned over to her mother and the other researchers, she was asked to return the Rowlet. But, seeing how clingy the Grass/Flying type was to her, the professor couldn’t help but let her keep it. “You never know. You might just find your calling with him by your side.”
Fast forward a four years to a newly graduate from high school, Hyemi and her Rowlet formed an unbreakable bond. The two became an inseparable pair, the girl even sneaking him into school from time to time when the Pokémon didn’t want to part ways. But, now that school was over, she wasn’t quite sure what to do. One day after dinner, Hyemi was found in her room, Rowlet right beside her, watching a tournament held in Alola. She watched in awe as one of the trainers sent out their Decidueye and how powerful it was. Her head turned over to look at Rowlet, who was also admiring the last of his evolution defeat the opponent with little effort. That was when she knew what to do. “Hey….what do you say we start on our own adventure?” The Rowlet, a bit startled from his companion’s inquiry, tilted his head in confusion, evident that he was trying to rack his brain around the idea. “Yeah…let’s do it! i know it’s later than the average rookie trainer, but better late than never!” With you next to me, we can do it. Let’s go to Alola and start something brand new!” Her parents were obviously worried upon hearing Hyemi’s plan, but decided to let her go on on her own. She was an adult after all. And so, Hyemi travelled to Alola with her Rowlet in hopes of becoming the next champion in the region.
