A few interns and assistants who were left there still managed to look busy, rushing in and out of doors carrying big piles of paper and thick overflowing folders. They all seemed to be intentionally avoiding her. The reporter chewed on her lip and turned to face the secretary again.

"Listen. I know you know this, but in case you need a reminder, I'm with the Redwood Review, and I need a statement on this–" Just then her eye caught the passing figure of a familiar employee at the Hart law firm. Chelsea rushed away from the desk and towards the girl without giving it a second thought. What was her name again? Anna? Alma? Petra?

Vergangene Woche hielt sich die Leiterin der Asien-Pazifik-Abteilung im Auswärtigen Amt, Petra Sigmund, in Bangkok auf, um die bilateralen Bindungen, die auf „engen wirtschaftlichen und politischen Verknüpfungen“ gründeten, zu intensivieren. Berlin sieht Thailand auch als Alternative für die deutsche Industrie zu Standorten in China. Die Beziehungen zwischen Deutschland und Thailand reichen schon über anderthalb Jahrhunderte zurück. Sie wurden schon im Deutschen Kaiserreich ausgebaut, gewannen in der zweiten Hälfte der 1920er Jahre, als die Regierung in Bangkok sich gegen den Einfluss der chinesischen Minderheit wandte, an Stärke und blühten vor allem in der Nazizeit auf. Bereits in den 1950er Jahren konnte die Bundesrepublik an die alten Kontakte nach Thailand anknüpfen – nun an der Seite der Vereinigten Staaten im Kontext der Systemkonfrontation.

Die ersten diplomatischen Beziehungen zwischen einzelnen deutschen Gebieten und dem heutigen Thailand, das bis 1939 Siam hieß, wurden in 1850er Jahren etabliert.[1] Zur Zeit des Deutschen Kaiserreichs von 1871 bis 1918 wurden die Beziehungen fortgeführt. Bereits im Jahr 1897 besuchte der damalige siamesische König Chulalongkorn Deutschland und wurde dabei vom deutschen Kaiser Wilhelm II. empfangen. Trotz der während des Staatsbesuch beteuerten Freundschaft beider Länder gab es 1899 Überlegungen im Auswärtigen Amt, eine deutsche Kolonie an Siams Küste zum Indischen Ozean im Raum Langkawi zu etablieren.[2] Aus diesen Plänen wurde nichts; stattdessen bauten die Regierungen beider Länder die bilateralen wirtschaftlichen und militärischen Beziehungen aus. Im ersten Jahrzehnt des 20. Jahrhunderts wurden siamesische Kadetten an deutschen Militärinstitutionen ausgebildet.[3] König Chulalongkorn kultivierte die Beziehungen mit Kaiser Wilhelm II. unter anderem, um besser zwischen den Großmächten manövrieren zu können.[4] Nach drei Jahren Neutralität im Ersten Weltkrieg erklärte die siamesische Regierung 1917 Deutschland den Krieg, ließ deutsche Schiffe in den Häfen des Landes konfiszieren und entsandte ein militärisches Expeditionskorps nach Westeuropa.[5]

Nach dem Ende der Kampfhandlungen an der Westfront des Ersten Weltkriegs besetzten siamesische Soldaten das deutsche Neustadt an der Weinstraße. [...] Die im Weltkrieg abgebrochenen diplomatischen Beziehungen nahmen beide Länder erst wieder im Jahr 1925 auf.[6] Von Ende 1925 bis Anfang 1932 vertrat Dr. Rudolf Asmis im Range eines Gesandten die Weimarer Republik in Siam.[7] Asmis hatte vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg im deutschen Kolonialdienst gearbeitet und von 1922 bis 1924 versucht, deutsche Wirtschaftskontakte nach Sibirien und Zentralasien wiederaufzubauen.[8]

Als 1925 der bis dahin absolutistisch regierende König von Siam verstarb, war das zwischen verschiedenen britischen Kolonien (Burma/Myanmar und Malaya/Malaysia und Singapur) liegende Land stark im Ausland verschuldet. Großbritannien gelang es zunehmend, Siam durch Kredite von sich abhängig zu machen.[9] Um diese Abhängigkeit zu verringern, forcierte der neue König eine harte Austeritätspolitik. Sein Hofstaat wurde von rund 2.500 Angestellten und Beamten auf etwa 400 reduziert. Insgesamt wurden in allen Ministerien des Landes rund 4.000 Beamte entlassen. Auch ausländische Berater mussten ihren Job quittieren, darunter Briten und Franzosen. Der deutsche Gesandte Asmis wertete das positiv und sah es als Schritt zu einer größeren Unabhängigkeit des südostasiatischen Landes an.[10] Mit einer Großbritannien gegenüber feindlichen Politik wurde Siam für die deutsche Südostasienpolitik zunehmend interessant.

In den „Preußischen Jahrbüchern“ erschien im Jahr 1927 ein Artikel, in dem die „Chinesische Frage“ als „Siams größtes Problem“ bezeichnet wurde. Laut dem Zensus des Jahres 1929 machten chinesische Einwanderer bereits rund die Hälfte der Einwohner der siamesischen Hauptstadt Bangkok aus, wenngleich sie nur insgesamt rund vier Prozent der Gesamtbevölkerung des Landes stellten. Der deutsche Gesandte beobachtete, wie über die chinesische Minderheit auch kommunistische Organisationen Einfluss gewannen, und sah in einem äußerst restriktiven Pressegesetz zufrieden ein wirksames Mittel gegen „bolschewistische Umtriebe“.[11] Im Antikommunismus hatten die politischen Eliten Deutschlands und Siams einen gemeinsamen Nenner gefunden.

Nachdem infolge der Weltwirtschaftskrise des Jahres 1929 Siams diplomatische Vertretung in Deutschland geschlossen worden war, öffnete die Gesandtschaft des südostasiatischen Landes in Berlin im Jahr 1937 wieder neu. Das nationalsozialistische Deutschland hatte 1936 einen neuen diplomatischen Vertreter nach Bangkok entsandt; unter der Ägide von Wilhelm Thomas „blühten die Beziehungen zwischen Deutschland und Thailand auf“, wie es in einer Untersuchung über die Geschichte der bilateralen Beziehungen heißt.[12] Ein deutscher Professor wurde damals zum Berater der siamesischen Regierung für den Ausbau von Häfen und Wasserstraßen ernannt; die Lufthansa eröffnete ein Büro in Bangkok. Im Juli 1939 fand der erste Flug einer Lufthansa-Maschine von Berlin in die Hauptstadt des südostasiatischen Landes statt.[13] Das faschistische Deutschland konnte in Siam deutlich an Einfluss gewinnen.

Thailand [...] blieb im Zweiten Weltkrieg – wie im Ersten – zunächst neutral und schloss sich weder den faschistischen Achsenmächten noch den Alliierten an. In der insgesamt relativ kurzen Zeit der Neutralität entsandte die Regierung in Bangkok einen Militärattaché nach Berlin. Darüber hinaus gab es Besuche hochrangiger Offiziere aus Thailand in Nazideutschland; thailändische Soldaten wurden an verschiedenen deutschen Militärinstitutionen ausgebildet.[14] Einer der ausgebildeten Offiziere, Wicha Thitthawat, diente nach der Beendigung seiner Ausbildung direkt in der Wehrmacht und war als Soldat Teil der deutschen Besatzungsmacht in Frankreich.[15]

Im Dezember 1941 trat Thailand dann dem Bündnis der faschistischen Achsenmächte bei.[16] Für die größeren Achsenmächte Deutschland und Japan besaß das südostasiatische Land aufgrund seiner geographischen Nähe zu Britisch-Indien Bedeutung. So erhielt Rash Behari Bose, einer der Anführer der Indischen Unabhängigkeitsliga (Indian Independence League, IIL), in Thailand Asyl.[17] Sein Bruder Subhas Chandra Bose [!] hielt sich Anfang 1943 noch in Deutschland auf und wurde von einem deutschen U-Boot in den Indischen Ozean gebracht. Nach einer waghalsigen Aktion, bei der Subhas Chandra Bose vor der Küste Madagaskars von einem deutschen auf ein japanisches U-Boot wechselte, fuhr der indische Nationalist nach Südostasien. Nazideutschland entsandte auch Ärzte, um Thailand im Krieg gegen die Briten zu unterstützen.[18]

Als im Mai 1945 die deutsche Wehrmacht bedingungslos kapitulierte, gab es weiterhin einen deutschen Gesandten in Bangkok. Im August 1945 kapitulierte die Regierung des faschistischen Japans und beendete damit den Zweiten Weltkrieg in Asien. Der thailändische Regentschaftsrat Pridi Phanomyong erklärte daraufhin, die thailändischen Kriegserklärungen von 1942 seien null und nichtig. Das südostasiatische Land wurde nicht von den Alliierten besetzt; die Monarchie existierte unverändert weiter. Die USA stiegen zur Großmacht mit dem größten Einfluss im Land auf.[19] Im Jahr 1952 nahm Thailand dann diplomatische Beziehungen mit der Bundesrepublik Deutschland auf.[20] Als Alliierte der USA fanden sich Thailand und Westdeutschland im gleichen Block der Systemkonfrontation wieder.

Let It Be Enough - 1 Year Anniversary

"You will always be enough."

This beautiful art was commissioned from the incredibly talented Elle Noir (twitter/instagram/deviantart)! Thank you, Elle, for bringing this beautiful moment in their story to life.

This time last year, I posted the first chapter of Let It Be Enough on AO3. The butterfly effect of my simple desire to share my silly little story is unbelievable. In one year it garnered over 50k hits on AO3, and that isn't even the coolest part. I made lifelong friends, found a community of wonderful writers, and fell in love. I reflect upon 2023 and bear witness to the power of storytelling. I never thought that I'd still be writing fanfiction about Petra and Miles a year later in the form of my Fairytale AU, The Memory of Stars, and yet here I am.

The world of Avatar is magnificent. It gives me hope that the highest grossing movie of all time is an allegory about colonialism. It emphasizes the importance and beauty of our connection to the Earth (or in the case of the Na’vi, Pandora), and condemns corporate greed. I sincerely love Avatar, not just because of the nostalgia, but because of how bold it is in its storytelling.

Stories are the backbone of society. For all of human history, we have told each other stories. Stories shape our worldview and helps us convey emotions and ideas. Every person finds their own truth in the shape of words.

James Cameron is a fantastic storyteller. However, he is also a white man, and some stories are not his to tell. Many aspects of the Na’vi are drawn from real world indigenous cultures. I understand that he consulted various groups in his development of the Na’vi, but if you enjoy Avatar, I strongly encourage you to seek out own voices stories as well. Our world is troubled and complicated, but I truly believe that it gets better each time someone opens their mind to traditional indigenous knowledge. That gives me hope more than anything: the will to listen.

One of my favourite books: Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer (If you're a fan of audiobooks, Robin reads the audiobook herself and it’s incredible. I highly highly recommend picking this up, especially if you like plants.)

Also, if you are playing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, please dedicate time to researching Residential Schools and their dark legacy in North America. You will better understand the real world inspiration of the Ambassador Program, but more importantly, you will be offering a listening ear to the important stories of survivors. Feel free to add more book suggestions to the comments as well!

Challenge #7 beim Workout for Water: 450 Kniebeuge Zum krönenden Abschluss packt mich mein Ehrgeiz. Nachdem "Konkurrent" Dennis Heine vom Team Liquidators Dienstag alleine 450 Kniebeuge geschafft hat, will ich es wissen... Am Ende wird es hart. Für mich ist die Challenge und damit die tägliche körperliche Anstrengung vorbei. Ich kann mich morgen ausruhen. Viele Kinder weltweit müssen aber weiterhin täglich Wasser holen gehen.
