I'm in love with your blog! Thank you for sharing all your shojo manga goodies! I have a collection of old Hana to Yume magazines and furoku I want to scan and photograph, too, but I have no idea where to start (all of my scans and pics turn out pretty bad, lol). Do you have any tips on scanning, color correcting, or taking pics? Your scans look so clean and the colors so vibrant, as if they were originally digital! Even your regular photographs look so well lit!
Oh wow thank you so much for this ask! I never expected anyone to think this about my pictures, so it’s lovely to hear. :)
To be honest my photos are not well-lit. I have a very dark apartment (my eyes get very dry and I don’t like sharp white lights) and it’s forever an issue for me to get nice-looking photos that aren’t super dark and yellow! I think the best way to do it is wait for a day with nice natural lighting coming in your windows -- not bright direct sunlight, but nicely scattered white light. That’s how I took these pics, for example. And sometimes I use the white balance feature of the curves layer in photoshop and play around with it until I feel it looks nice enough. Another option is to get a ring light, I think you can get some for pretty cheap these days! I have an old Olympus Pen camera but I’m pretty sure you can take just as good pictures with a modern smartphone.
My advice about scans is honestly just to get a good scanner. Most small scanner/printer combinations you can get for cheap don’t have a good scanner, so your images will be grainy even if you scan them at 1200dpi. :( Maybe that’s your issue? I have this all-in-one machine but that’s because I got it for free from a place I worked at when they closed shop, so I’m sure you can find something that’s a lower price but still good quality. (And smaller, since honestly this machine is way too huge. Maybe the scanner @hotwaterandmilk has is a good choice?) I don’t do much with the images other than lighten them up a bit with levels and curves, and maybe adding a tiny bit of saturation. But, it's very little.
Good luck, and I hope to see your HtY collection in the future!

I'm a bit late to the party with this because shipping to Australia + being away over the holiday period, but I'm here to say that I believe the first volume of Egmont Manga's 'Wedding Peach Luxury Edition' re-release is likely to make a solid addition to any fan's collection.
The page and print quality is easily the best available for Yazawa's original Wedding Peach manga anywhere in the world right now and the hardback presentation is quite lovely. I'm not in a position to judge the quality of the translation (I did 3 years of German in high school lol, so I can just read a kids' book like this and that's about it), but the overall presentation of lettering etc. is easily at current industry standard in this volume.
This hardback release contains what was originally volumes 1-3 of content from the Ciao-serialised Wedding Peach manga series. A second hardback will conclude the series in April 2024.
Easily the biggest drawback with this release is the cost of these volumes. 30,00€ is NOT cheap and with a label like 'luxury edition' it's obvious Egmont are gunning for older collectors who want to upgrade their original German paperback print from a couple of decades ago. This means anyone just wanting to check the series out casually is unlikely to engage with this release based on cost alone.
I do think you get decent (though not amazing) bang for your buck if you're an existing fan, but that's very much a niche market. Similarly, I don't think this release is likely to win over anyone who has never liked Wedding Peach in the past, it's nicely presented but there's no colour pages or anything else special included and the plot is still, well, Wedding Peach so I doubt it'll bring over a new generation of fans based on that alone.
Still, I'm glad this re-release exists and I'd love for the US market to do something similar though I know that's quite unlikely.

Finally received my copy of the first Magilumiere print volume from VIZ Media. Here it is beside my copy of the first Japanese volume. I don't have the space to be double-dipping on things but Magilumiere is an exception.
If you have enjoyed reading the series for free via official digital channels and you have the cash spare, I highly recommend supporting the official release that's local to you (or close enough, per me supporting the US release).
And if you haven't checked the series out on Manga Plus, now's your chance to get started in book-form before the anime series debuts in October-ish!

My copy of Discotek Media's Saint Tail Blu-ray arrived today (I'm not in North America so it took a bit to get here). If you've been considering picking it up but haven't taken the plunge I'd say it's worth the investment, I think this is a really nice release for an older magical girl title.
The remaster is per the Japanese remster, so it retains all the exquisite detail from that transfer including the rich colours. On-disc extras are quite generous for a niche older title, including OG next episode previews, a diverse range of commercials and creditless OP/ED sequences.
I wrote about why the show itself is worth a watch here, if you'd like to know my thoughts re: what makes the anime adaptation of this classic Tachikawa Megumi story a solid watch after almost three decades.
Personally, I'm very satisfied with my purchase (and it was my purchase, I buy everything in my collection and don't shill for freebies). It is clear to me that a lot of care and respect went into releasing Saint Tail again for the North American market, something which was missing the first time around when Tokyopop had the title.
I'd like to see this release do well enough to justify Discotek's investment in additional 90s magical girl titles, but beyond that I'd also love to see another stateside release of the manga series. It would be incredibly satisfying to have both versions of Tachikawa's opus in lovingly rendered formats on my shelves. DREAMING, I KNOW. (Plus, like so many anime adaptations, there's nuance in the manga that's missing in the animated version so the original comic deserves a second chance too.)
Anyway tl;dr Saint Tail anime US BD good.

Organising upcoming content for Weddingpeach.net and these images articulate nicely why I love the wedding swords .
They're cute, cool, and Peach really wants to cut a bitch. Like, she's super into it.
Why did men deny her this simple joy in the anime? :(

My Yumeiro Pâtissière blu-ray set arrived and for the heavily-discounted price, I honestly couldn't be happier.
The release is extremely bare bones (packaging is what you see above and nothing else, on-disc there's only creditless OP/ED sequences and trailers) but you get the entire series over two SD BD discs. The anime itself is, well, it's a kid's anime about a cute girl trying to find her way in the world of pastry. Nothing too deep or visually incredible here, just basic stuff likely to appeal to youngsters.
If a fairly budget shoujo adaptation from over a decade ago sounds right up your alley, I'd recommend grabbing this while there are some copies floating around at sale prices (like the official Maiden Japan store) because this isn't the kind of title that's likely to get a bunch of re-releases down the track.

I know this isn't really relevant to my usual content, but I received some books I've been chasing for a while in the mail and I'm PUMPED.
The Parade's Gone By... I remember reading in my first year of film studies and have been angling for a copy for a while, there just happened to be one up for sale locally a few weeks back for an incredible price that I couldn't pass up. While there's a certain level of whimsy to this book (as it's full of firsthand accounts by those who worked on early film and Brownlow himself has a lot of love and respect for silent features), it really is a seminal text for anyone interested in silent film or early Hollywood.
From Faust to Strangelove I have had on my Goodreads wishlist for over a decade. I borrowed it from the university library at one point but could never justify spending over $100 on a physical copy for myself. Last month I found one for $40 online and decided to treat myself. I have a long-standing interest in how scientists are portrayed in popular culture, so this is one of those books that I feel so blessed to have in my hot little hands. Haynes' work is a tad dated in 2k24, but there's some great elements at play here that are truly foundational to understanding the history of the scientist in Western literature canon.
So when I'm not taking care of my cat, trust that I'll be re-reading these over the next few weeks. I can't wait! :)
