Saturn's dance with Titan
Tumblr media
At last the sky is clear (no clouds, no dust) and i have time - a new image of the Saturn will be shoot tonight.
I placed the telescope outside to cool down and while waiting for the scope to cool down and for Saturn to rise I prepared all the other equipment (and maybe drank a beer or two and watched a episode of Sabrina).
Once everything was set up and Saturn was high enough, it was time to start shooting it.
The equipment we used was the Orion Maksutov 127/1540 on the Starseeker IV AltAz mount and the Omegon VeLOX 178C camera together with a 2X Barlow.
The image you see is the result of the best 25% out of 2648 frames stacked. Stacking and editing was done in Registax 6.
We hope you enjoy the photo.
Clear skies!

Thought I'd post something lunar in case people were wondering what happened LOL. The annoying thing is, over the past month or so there have been very few times where is hasn't been cloudy/mostly cloudy in the evening, and any other time I haven't had the opportunity, equipment or free hand to do any observing except with the naked eye. That same holds for planetary observation -- I was able to see Saturn a while back, but not since then. With both Jupiter and Saturn at or near opposition I feel like I'm missing prime viewing time, but so it goes. I'll go ahead and admit, it's also been hot and the ecliptic is pretty low on the south right now, so that makes it less likely I'll attempt going out on evenings when it's somewhat clear and I could possibly see something through the murk. 😉 #iphoneastrophotography #lunarphotography #planetaryphotography #themoon #simulatedimage #toocloudy #toohot #toolow https://www.instagram.com/p/CS4M7grrqsI/?utm_medium=tumblr

Woo-hoo, a planet! 🎉 The last time I really got to view Saturn was during the Great Conjunction with Jupiter way back around New Years, and it was waaaay on the other side of the Solar System. You could kinda sorta see that it was a bit oblong, but rings? ...LOL maybe. Tonight Saturn is at opposition, so it's the closest -- and visibly biggest -- it'll be all year. Tonight is also the first time in a long while there haven't been annoying clouds gathering around sunset, which was nice. That's one of the reasons I haven't posted much astronomical content lately. Summer observing at my place is also not very convenient, as the ecliptic is waaaay to the south at night, there are a bunch of houses blocking my southern view, and the City of Boston presents a big bright glowing blob of light pollution covering most of the southern horizon -- which is why I'm specializing in planetary and lunar observing, incidentally. While I had to wait for the planet to slide into the gap between the two houses behind me, it was definitely much bigger and I believe -- maybe real, maybe placebo effect, maybe wishful thinking -- that I could actually discern a separation between the rings and the planet. Yes! [fist pump] Of course, for all you out there in Instaland, you get to look at some squiggly aberrated pixels in a vague oval shape rendered by an iPhone camera app that would probably like to go on strike at this point, so you'll have to take my word for it. Of course, I'd love to try to identify moons and such, but Saturn's moons aren't big, bright and colinear like Jupiter's, so that will have to wait for a telescope with a bit more aperture and resolving power. Maybe I can see Titan one of these evenings, but I wouldn't hold my breath. #iphoneastrophotography #saturn #oblong #planetaryphotography #kludge #takemywordforit https://www.instagram.com/p/CSGJNpXrX-p/?utm_medium=tumblr

Mars - 10-23-2020 Doing DSO / widefield photography has taught me that once I press the capture button I have time (typically an hour for me) to go do other things. So different then when I am doing planetary or lunar imaging! So, I decided to bring everything out last Friday and do a little bit of DSO, lunar and planetary. Here is the product of my quick planetary session . Not as good as the closest approach shots, but I am still pleased with the results. 70k frames taken with 12% stacked. Atmosphere was okay but not spectacular. Bortle 8 skies. . 10" Dobsonian, ZWO ASI224MC (using SharpCap), Celestron X-Cel LX 3x, and Baader Moon-Skyglow filter. Stacked in AutoStakkert and wavelets/color balance in Registax. . . . #astronomy #astrophotography #highpointscientific #mars #mars2020 #marslove #planetaryphotography #photography #photooftheday #igworldclub_astrophotography #science #space #nasa #nasamars #nightsky #nightphotography #nature #naturelover #NaturePhotography #astrophoto #rhodeisland #providenceri #zwoasi (at Providence, Rhode Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGz7gjqpgbi/?igshid=1mfhiwnkf3a06

Saturn- 10-6-2020 Before there was captures of Mars on Tuesday, I warmed up on Saturn (and Jupiter). Due to my latitude (around 42N), both Jupiter amd Saturn are lower then what I would prefer for atmospheric interference for capture. However, my data on Saturn is some of my best yet, so... maybe its me :) I think this is the most color bands I have gotten out of it. If I knew how to edit planets in Photoshop I could probably bring our more and clean it up a bit . 10" Dobsonian, ZWO ASI224MC, & Celestron X-Cel LX 3x . . . #astronomy #astrophotography #Saturn #highpointscientific #stars #rings #photography #nightsky #nightphotography #nasa #color #celestron #telescope #planetaryphotography #planetaryimaging #planet #solarsystem #rhodeisland #newengland #providence #zwoasi #astrophoto #photooftheday (at Providence, Rhode Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGFONHBJumf/?igshid=9shw1vad5jgb

Mars - 10/6 - 10/7 2020 Almost 4 hours worth of rotation processed from last night. 17 individual videos processed in PIPP for stacking in AS!3 and then minor wavelet sharpening in Registax. Sent back through PIPP to create and Avi animation and converted to mp4 (because my phone would not acknowledge the Avi :) ). I could have put in a lot more videos / image stacks but I decided to keep it simple to save some time. This is my first real rotation animation . . . #astrophotography #astronomy #mars #mars2020 #highpointscientific #photography #video #rotation #solarsystem #planetaryphotography #redplanet #nightsky #nightphotography #rhodeisland #providence #cityastronomy #nature #NaturePhotography (at Providence, Rhode Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGC_zeKpqbK/?igshid=1ufeyabblu5q4

Jupiter - 9-26-2020 Had the scope out in case it remained clear for Mars... it did not, but I got a couple of quick shots of Jupiter. Images 1-3 are normal size. Image 4 is the first image resized to 200% (in Registax). . I am having an issue with the ASI224MC in finding the right combo for exposure and gain to both reduce noise and allow me to sharpen for details. Any tips would be appreciated! (Last night was virtually wasted :) ) . 10" Dobsonian, ZWO ASI224MC with 2x barlow. ASICap, video processed in PIPP, stacked in AutoStakkert and processed in Registax . . . #astrophotography #astronomy #highpointscientific #Jupiter #photography #nature #naturelover #NaturePhotography #science #space #nasa #zwoasi #rhodeisland #providence #providenceri #cityastronomy #telescope #dobsonian #planet #planetaryphotography #nightsky #nightphotography (at Providence, Rhode Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFzFmnJphWK/?igshid=aj8aeihfheod

Saturn & Tethys (moon) - 9-25-2020 Not my best capture of Saturn on Friday, but probably my coolest ever. While doing wavelets in Registax, I hit one of the boxes on the right side of the wavelet screen and behold, a moon. Checked Starry Night software to make sure it really was a moon, finished wavelet processing in Registax then did some heavy processing in Photoshop to get Tethys to not only show up but to look "right." Even then, not tje easiest to see - Tethys is to the rigbt of Saturn amd a little above . 10" Dobsonian, ZWO ASI224MC, & 2x barlow . . . #astronomy #astrophotography #highpointscientific #Saturn #tethys #moon #rings #photography #nature #naturelover #NaturePhotography #planet #planetary #planetaryphotography #nasa #nasasaturn #nightsky #nightphotography #zwoasi #rhodeisland #providence #providenceri #cityastronomy #color (at Providence, Rhode Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFrYDDxpaoO/?igshid=12e23btiwm4df

Jupiter w/ Io & Europa - 9-25-2020 Last image of the day, I promise! I still have a good amount of data to go through but I believe this may be my best that I captured (most of the rest is with the 3x barlow and I feel the 2x captured better). 2000+ frames from 3 consecutive videos joined in PIPP, stacked in AS!3 and processed in Registax . 10" Dobsonian, ZWO ASI224MC, 2x Barlow . . . #astronomy #astrophotography #highpointscientific #zwo #zwoasi #oriontelescopes #Jupiter #jupitermoons #europa #io #nature #naturelover #NaturePhotography #photography #space #science #rhodeisland #nasa #planetaryphotography #greatredspot #providence #moons #moon (at Providence, Rhode Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFm4LuRJN81/?igshid=ro3d8rppz10l

Saturn - 9-25-2020 So... the ZWO ASI224MC is amazing... this is s quick stack of 300 frames from a short video (69 exp 143 gain) amd some quick waveletw in Registax... man I cannot wait to go through all my data after tonight!! . 10" Dobsonian, asi224mc, 2x barlow (cheap one) . . . #astronomy #astrophotography #highpointscientific #saturn #nature #NaturePhotography #naturelover #photography #nightsky #nightphotography #zwoasi #rhodeisland #providence #planetaryphotography (at Providence, Rhode Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFlCHnypvUa/?igshid=1fpw7qi6djqw8

Jupiter w/ Ganymede, Io & Europa . My 3x barlow came in and I wanted to try it out and finally had a clear night. Smaller then with the Powermate 5, but i like the results. I also took the time to get some IR and L-Enhanced with the 5x barlow which I will post later. . Saturn - 9-11-2020 Got one decent RGB stack - realized I had too much disparity between my colors ISO wise in some earlier shots that really messed up the color (and I dont know enough to fix it :) ) . Probably won't have much more with Saturn or Jupiter unless my filter wheel or zwo camera comes in before they are way too low (around 25 deg. currently at transit) . 10" Dobsonian, Nikon Z6, Powermate 5 . . . #astronomy #astrophotography #saturn #rings #planetaryphotography #planet #nature #naturelover #nightsky #highpointscientific #cityastronomy #nikonphotography #nikonz6 #telescope #televue #rhodeisland #providenceri (at Providence, Rhode Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFHdEMKJ-y5/?igshid=2tzlgwv1m702
