This is more of a rant than an analysis, an opinion, you can disagree/agree.  

BTW, I haven’t watched the series but read all the books. There would be spoilers on some of the books, on who A is. This is more why it should be animated and how. 

𝐖𝐡𝐲?

In live actions, it's hard to find an actor that looks like the character. However, I think PLL needs some characters to look similar to their book counterparts, not exactly but similar.  

In my point of view, it could have been easier to convey the story to an audience. 

E.G Emily’s parents were racist; they didn’t like Maya because she was black (so it would make sense for Emily’s struggles), of course they can’t find the perfect actor to look like Emily in a live action but can animate her.  

Also, Rosewood has a classy school that the girls attend with uniforms. Obviously, it's hard to use uniforms in a live action but it’s more easier animated (saves hassle to draw different outfits for kids to go to school)  

Honestly, this is more of an idea (sorry I can’t explain this properly).

  

𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐲?

Mona Vanderwaal’s; in the earlier books she’s described to look similar to Alison by Hanna. This foreshadows what was going to happen in the future, that Mona was the first A. In the first book (throughout the next 3 books as well), all 4 girls kept seeing blonde hair, this would add to the curiosity of the audience if Alison was still alive before finding her body. 

It makes sense to an audience that the blonde was Mona, make sense to the PLL girls that they were targeted by Mona not Alison. Adds more creepiness if they kept seeing blonde hair.  

Spencer Hastings; when she discovered that her Ali was actually step-sisters. Also, it would make sense if past Ali and current/past Spencer look a little bit like each other. Along with Melissa. 

Ali; if there was some scenes of 6th grade Ali and 7th grade her it could show her to have darker blonde hair in 7th grade also darker blue eyes. This would convey on the twin switch, foreshadowing that the Ali they knew was never the real one. (sorry if this part was confusing) 

Nearly any blonde because in Spencer’s flashbacks she always sees someone with Ali who is blonde on the night the murder took place.  

Hanna; It would be more easier to differentiate past her and present her. And to portray how she doesn’t want to go revert to her ‘ugly’ past life that she had. Also to illustrate how much she had changed prior to Alison being missing. 

𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝟗-𝟏𝟔

My personal opinion would be to cut some parts that are useless, to shorten them. This is because the books drag the new A torturing them (which is real Ali). 

𝐒𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬?

I haven’t read Pretty little secrets (which I don’t plan on doing) but definitely read Ali’s Pretty Little Lies (honestly my favorite book in the series). Ali’s Pretty Little Lies could be an animated movie. 

𝐈𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧!

In my opinion, any PLL character would be better animated, and it could be more better telling the story. Only if it follows the story of the books. 

Finally, I honestly love the book design of the characters and would like to see it animated.

Sara Shepard was so funny for the storylines she wrote in the pll books which were coming out while the shows 2nd-5th seasons were airing especially the final Ezra cameo, the scene where Alison tries to drown Emily a la Paily and the part in book 15 where there’s a movie being made of what happened to the girls and Hanna says she wants Lucy Hale to play her

unpopular opinion: mona vanderwaal did nothing wrong in the books. she was the hero. even hanna acknowledges that the girls deserved what they got.

you don't get to spend years tormenting an innocent girl to tears on a regular basis and then give her a lifelong disfigurement and blind her best friend (who is also a rape victim) then act like she's evil for getting revenge

It's kind of weird how the books repeatedly show that Emily is NOT attracted to men- especially with Toby, where they show that she does see him as attractive and does feel an emotional (friendship) connection with him but is unable to feel attracted TO him. But then suddenly several books in she is attracted to a boy and sleeps with him and she of course gets pregnant and then she never shows attraction to boys again. It really comes off like Shepard wanted to have her lesbian character get pregnant so she changed her sexuality but then didn't want to actually write a bisexual character so she ignored that aspect of Emily as soon as she got what she wanted out of it. Lol.

**Major PLL book spoiler warning!!**

(This post also includes descriptions of eating disorders that could be triggering.)

I’m currently kicking off summer by rereading my favorite of the PLL books, “Ali’s Pretty Little Lies,” and it really strikes me as funny that the book version of Alison (or at least the Alison that the girls knew) is actually in some ways a much better person than the show version of Ali, even though she’s intended to be at least somewhat of a villain and certainly not a good person.

In the books, Ali (actually Courtney) walks in on Hanna forcing herself to throw up with a toothbrush. Hanna admits that it’s something she does occasionally. Alison is pretty horrified by this, and at several points in the book tries to convince Hanna that what she’s doing is unsafe and that she should tell her mom about it. She also makes an effort to refrain from making nasty comments about Hanna’s weight or binging after finding out the extent of Hanna’s eating disorder, at least until her own life starts to spiral at the end of the book. It’s not a perfect response, by any means, but considering book!Alison isn’t exactly an award-winning friend, it was a surprisingly kind one.

Now in contrast, in the show, Alison is the one who first gives Hanna the idea to start throwing up the food that she binges on. She even teaches her how to do it. And even after, once she knows just how badly Hanna is struggling, she continues to regularly make awful remarks about Hanna being heavier, Hanna eating too much, Hanna not being as pretty as the others, etc. 

Ironically, it’s the show that tried so hard to redeem their version of Alison and convince us that she was a good person all along, when in reality so many of her actions were far more destructive and almost sociopathic than her book counterpart.

thinking about the pll books and how nothing can ever compete with the absolutely insane sister dynamic that melissa spencer ali and courtney shared

a few examples include: stealing your sister’s 24 y.o. boyfriend at 16, stealing your sister’s 18 y.o. boyfriend when you’re 13 (twice), gaslighting your sister into having schizophrenia and sending her to the insane asylum, stealing your sister’s life, accusing your sister’s boyfriend of murdering your other sister, killing your sister’s boyfriend, kidnapping your sister and locking her in the closet with the rotting corpse of the aforementioned boyfriend, blackmailing your sister, forging a video tape of your sister murdering another girl and sending it to the police, trying to kill your sister, actually murdering your other sister, sending your sister to jail (twice), etc etc.
