Week 1

Our first-class back in materials and media began off with reviewing the brief and the course structure for the semester. We are beginning with the print module for 6 weeks then we are changing our direction and focusing on kinetic type for the last 6 weeks.

Our first brief is Typografika '24, we are to design and layout a double-sided poster/brochure using Adobe software. We have been provided text to layout within our design. We are to create a double-sided 380 x 540mm folded publication using 12 or 16 panels. It is due on 14th of April, at 5pm.

After we reviewed the brief, we had a look at a couple of previous student's work to provide us with a visual understanding of the expectations for this assignment.

After all the logistics were discussed, we moved on to experimenting with paper folding. This exercise was important to our understanding of the brief as it allows us to begin to think about how our work will be interacted with and how we can display the information effectively for the reader. It was also important for us as designers as it allowed us to understand how the paper will or can be folded, providing us with multiple different opportunities.

After a break in class, we returned to our first tutorial for the year. We began by looking at InDesign again, as a refresher and to also provide us with shortcuts or tips which we may not have known previously. Some of the things we covered were

Document setup (including setting for default measurements, bleed and facing pages)

Workplace set up (customizing and utilising essentials classic)

Shortcut keys and functions of the tools

Guides and rulers (how to set them up for our project)

Parent and children pages

Type and their frames (offset type and how to link between different frames)

After last year, my confidence in this course has increased and I am interested and excited to see where I will take this assignment within the next following weeks. I am looking forward to producing another printed publication as I enjoyed the process and assignment last year.

It is evident that Black-African culture has evolved beyond its infamous shorelines and is regenerating. Furthermore, we seem to neglect the influence that Caribbean culture has had on popular culture. I ended last year off with an online publication, and now I get to end this year off with my very first print publication.. crazy how things work. I told myself before I see 22 I want to get my work published in print and look at that, it really happened!!! I spoke it into existence!!! I'm pleased to finally be able to share this project with yall. Being able to work hard for something and watch it come to life is a feeling I want everyone whose working towards a dream or goal to feel. Patients, persistence and drive is what got me here. Its so surreal that I'm really looking down at my work printed in a magazine, not only in one section but for three different sections (fashion, fitness and grooming) God you are great!!!!🙏🏽✨
