the fact that so many people (including those involved in the show itself) are ignoring the wishes of the victims' families to NOT have the worst parts of their lives dramatized just so millenial/gen z women can obsess over a hot guy playing a serial killer is a little disturbing

afadshd I SAID I WON'T SAY ANYTHING BUT. hmm. okay. this is gonna bug me i need to get it out. i think we as a fandom just. forget some things about the show. the thing is, canonically, dean doesn't have an "Asian woman fetish" because the show does not acknowledge it as a thing that even deserves such terminology. every male character on the show is into that porn mag (remember that teenager sam bodyswapped with? proof enough i think if this random kid also had a copy of it. oh also! old vintage bab at the bunker 😐). it's essentially the only porn mag that's explicitly shown on screen on the show. like. THAT'S the issue. the problem is that the show normalizes fetishizing Asians to the point where the only form of East-Asian rep until, i guess, Kevin (??????like???god?????) is like. bab. sgfshsjd IT'S INGRAINED IN THE SHOW THAT BADLY. LIKE. IT'S FUCKED UP. like. essentially. the show is saying that if you're into women, you're into bab. which. hmm okay. i mean I'm not as offended as i probably should be when i sometimes come across it in fic bc i am a tired old asian woman and i filter it out for my personal enjoyment of things. (which. again. tired old person. im careful enough, but i just need white people to know that I am one extremely hardened and tolerant person who puts herself out there for conversations like this all the time and therefore is USED to it to the point of being able to shake it off pretty easily. but like. this is not the norm and IT SHOULD. NOT. BE)
(also engagement with fanfic and traditional media is like different for me but ig that's a whole other conversation. im so much more forgiving w fanfic.)
anyway. this is me just trying to tell you that bab is not an essential part of Dean's sexuality. it's not a personal thing for him, being fetishistic about Asians. Bab is the show being like that. it's the camera. ghostfacers effect or whatever. In a world where eric kripke is not one seriously messed up insane man, it would probably just be some skinmag with like. idk. naked cowgirls or whatever ykwim? like please don't think you're veering from canon when you remove it from your work/discussions/whatever. you're not. you're just ignoring it like you're ignoring other stupid stuff that the narrative normalizes for you.
also. i am not trying to coddle any white people, but i need you to understand that doing a racism ≠ being a racist. like i think a lot of you are afraid of owning up to racisms because you think you'll be branded a racist (in this case, a gun touting redneck who says slurs ig), and like. you need to divorce yourself from that kind of thinking my dudes. we all live in a white supremacist world (me, too, even in India so far away) we are ALL going to do some racisms some times. it's okay to acknowledge that and learn from it. like we are pigs in mud, some will get on you etc., the best you can do is like. see what went wrong. self-examine. reroute thinking to greener pastures.
OKAY STUPID LONG POST BUT YEAH

You ever have those two characters where the thought of them dating makes you sick to your stomach and the idea of them getting married turns you off completely from enjoying the media they're in? Because I do.

those two shots from the first episode of oniakashi showing satoko's reflection as her witch self, as she observes rena spacing out because of her home problems, and the second shot where she's presumably thinking of how she's going to inject rena at the nurse office struck me. satoko is so alienated from her surroundings after looping through her trauma for so long that it feels to her like everything is a 'dream'. she's so emotionally disconnected from the people she cares about as if she were separated by a glass wall. it's a literal interpretation of depersonalization/derealization.
satoko has now entirely compartmentalized the idea that she's doing anything bad. she's completely distanced herself from the violence she's committing towards herself and others. this is no different from a club game or one of her many traps. nothing is real including her friends until she's happy. until the reality wherein she can survive is within her grasp. everything else is a delusion and her friends are just pieces on the gameboard.
still, satoko gives rena the grief and remorse she doesn't give to mion, because rena has always fought against fate - the same fate satoko believes mion has not had to suffer through before that she and rena always do. satoko makes rena much like herself, that way they can be together in this.
rena's reaction to rina and her feeling that she has to kill rina in oniakashi is a parallel to satoko's reaction to rika and st. lucia as a whole. it's this sense that no matter what nothing can get better unless you commit an absolute. a certainty. others will not change or be better if you talk things out with them. satoko sympathizes with rena because she sees much of herself in rena.
it's different with mion whom satoko injects out of curiosity, the curiosity to see something she's never seen before playing out, but that's also an expression of her resentment towards mion - resentment because mion never had to go through what she and the others did while also being complicit in her ostracization and othering as a sonozaki in her mind. there's jealousy there. a bite of biterness. it's why satoko loses all the sympathy she had for rena when she's dealing with mion. satoko feels guilt over making rena go L5, but all of this is goes out of the window when it comes to mion. that's purposeful.
every fragment satoko weaves with eua is just another duel!!!!!!
duels are all about making Duelists and Brides relive anthy and akio's problems. it validates akio's horrible solution as akio is looking for the power to reinforce his worldview that enables his abuse of women and anthy. eua is the same. eua has turned her despair + loneliness into boredom and she sees the world as a stage to relieve that, but she only counts on the cruelty of the children of man. the savagery of the loops reinforces her worldview and validates her manipulation of satoko and her perspective of people.
satoko and anthy are also making them relive their trauma in a similar way, but they're more justified. satoko and anthy are trying to escape, find love, destroy themselves and their loved one. [REDACTED] from umineko is like them too btw.
the akashis are all about the thematics and parallels. gousotsu as a whole is. very utena!

sometimes i genuinely feel like i’m insane when it comes to online media analysis because like. i’ll come out of like the barbie movie or the newest scott pilgrim like “woof, that completely failed at what it was trying to do there, huh” and then i’ll come back on here to people celebrating it as this feminist masterpiece and i’m just left thinking. did we even watch the same thing???

To complete the favourable impression, she[Elizabeth] then told him[Mr Bennet] what Mr Darcy had voluntarily done for Lydia. He heard her with astonishment.
“This is an evening of wonders, indeed! And so, Darcy did every thing; made up the match, gave the money, paid the fellow’s debts, and got him his commission! So much the better. It will save me a world of trouble and economy. Had it been your uncle’s doing, I must and would have paid him; but these violent young lovers carry every thing their own way. I shall offer to pay him to-morrow; he will rant and storm about his love for you, and there will be an end of the matter.”
I strongly dislike Elizabeth’s parents in general, so I have my bias, but I’ve always found this response of Mr Bennet’s pretty distasteful. His insistence that he would actually pay Mr Gardiner suggests that he could pay, so it’s very convenient that Darcy did it and will refuse to be paid, and tbh I think Mr Bennet expects the ‘ranting and storming’ to be entertaining to boot.
...I also think Darcy absolutely does not rant and storm about his love for Elizabeth to anyone except Elizabeth herself. My headcanon is that Mr Bennet makes his offer, fully expecting entertainment, and Darcy is instead dead silent and unreadable for several moments. It goes on just long enough that Mr Bennet feels a flicker of alarm that Darcy is actually considering the offer.
In reality, Darcy is trying to figure out a polite way to express how incredibly stupid this idea sounds to him when he’s marrying Mr Bennet’s daughter and has 5x his income, quite apart from the “other inducements” (than Elizabeth) that led him to act and would be in effect anyway.

I'm glad the "Satire requires a clarity of purpose and target lest it be mistaken for and contribute to that which it intends to criticize" meme is getting critiqued in its usage because... While the sentiment itself is absolutely true... I feel like sometimes, perhaps, it's not a work of fiction's fault that you're personally bad at picking up on satire

okay though, i am sort of dying over the izzy’s like a little kid who feels like his friend was stolen away comment from con as much as i am the he’s too emotionally immature to identify love (and call it such) one.
the love thing is like... i think sometimes when we talk about izzy and love we end up at cross-purposes because we’ve all got a different working definition of love, and i’ve always fallen into the bluest eye camp where love is never any better than the lover; so izzy can love, in his izzy way, and not have it resemble any healthy definition of love on EARTH.
which is why it’s so perfect he never labels it? izzy doesn’t do any honest introspection! if he did, he wouldn’t be fuckin izzy. so he just feels things, surges and ebbs of something he won’t name. dude’s got this ugly, thorny thicket in his chest, and to reach his own heart he’d have to thrust his hands inside the ugliest, sharpest parts and then own them, get to know them, and call them his own.
izzy’s not emotionally mature: his love is nameless and childish.
which is why the kid thing is perfect? because the way izzy deals with ed trying to change and stede... existing, the reaction of a child: they stole my friend. they broke his brain, they changed him; he’s mine, and they can’t have him.
( ‘that bitch stole my man’; not NOT an adult version of this same logical fallacy. )
because the adult truth is people do not get stolen. they make choices and new connections, and nobody cast a terrible spell over them to turn them into someone new: they just liked those people too. and it’s entirely normal to feel jealous and possessive over a friend, or long for people to be what we want them to be so they can love us like we want them to love us.
but lucius is the one who actually has that one right: people in love don’t own each other. nobody stole our man or our friend, and acting like they did does a disservice to everybody involved.
god, i love that.
