Silent Thaw Thoughts

SPOILERS FOR THE LEAKED PREVIEW. Also long.

TL;DR - BrambleFake cannot be Ashfur or any ThunderClan cat that lived at the Lake. BrambleFake may come from an era of the Clans were the Code was new and did not have all its rules in place, and was also more strictly adhered to.

I know we only got a prologue + 2 chapters, but I already have thoughts, mostly about Bramblestar-the-Fake-One. I will refer to him as BrambleFake.

As readers, we are aware of how the losing a life and returning thing works thanks to that scene in The Darkest Hour from Firestar’s point of view. While not every lost life is likely the same experience, I believe they are generally the same: you “die”, you are in limbo for a small amount of time (wherein you may or may not speak with StarClan), and then are returned to your body. We know that Firestar always retained his memories of past lives and the only confusion he suffered was in the immediate moments after regaining his breath, literally.

Now look to Chapter 2 of the leaked preview. It is told from the perspective of Bristlefrost, a presumably normal warrior with little to no insight on how the nine lives of a leader work, beyond that if they die, they come back. We can assume that most warriors don’t actually know what happens when a life is lost and returned or what that feels like, as shown by Bristlefrost in Chapter 2. If we had never, ever had the chance to see the perspective of a leader losing a life, I would agree with her, even, that maybe it’s really weird to come back.

But I know what it’s like, to a point, and so do all of us readers who read arc 1. 

Had things gone normally, Bramblestar would not have forgotten his current life. Let’s take a look at what Bristlefrost notices.

BrambleFake needs Squirrelflight: If not for knowing how these two characters work, this might be true, but Bramblestar is not a cat who needs his paw held. Bristlefrost notices that BrambleFake seems to want Squirrelflight a lot more; possibly because she has the most knowledge on the Clan, currently, and he knows to ask the deputy and not a random cat, but doesn’t know enough to be comfortable. (Sol, anyone?) It is a safe assumption for BrambleFake to make that Squirrelflight will know basically all about the Clan, and he can rely on her to fill in the blanks he has.

BrambleFake finds the camp “intriguing:” Because of her lack of knowledge about how lost lives works, Bristlefrost assumes that losing a life might make a leader forget the previous one, making everything seem strange afterwards. Of course, readers know this not to be the case, so this is a big clue to me. It means the cat in BrambleFake has not lived in ThunderClan before. I know some folks thought it might be Ashfur, but even though he lived quite a few moons ago, camp has not changed drastically. I think a new tree fell in, and...a rock slide? Maybe two trees fell in. We can basically rule out any ThunderClan cat that has lived at the lake, or any cat who has spent extended amounts of time in the ThunderClan camp at the lake.

“Is the fresh-kill pile always so poorly stocked?”: BrambleFake may just be being picky here, but it seems like he is confused by the lack of prey, maybe even offended by it, as if back in his day the pile would never be so empty.

Warriors v Clan: This one intrigues me. BrambleFake mentions that “warriors...keep the Clan healthy and strong” and that they need to be taken care of before the elders. However, we all know the Code essentially requires that a Clan take care of its elders, kits, sick, and weak first, because the warriors are strong enough to persevere. My first thought was perhaps the spirit that is BrambleFake just doesn’t give a fuck about them, a la Brokenstar. (Of course, it can’t be Brokenstar himself, he didn’t give a flying squirrel about the Code.) The story thus far has implied that BrambleFake is keen on adhering to the Code, so why would he suggest breaking it to give preference to the warriors? I raise you: the spirit that is BrambleFake lived before the Code about caring for kits and elders was made. (We’re talking the era of the 3rd leader of RiverClan.) In the Code of the Clans, the narrator mentions that “[w]e are taught to respect elders who fought for the Clan in the past...if you had asked a warrior what he or she fought for, the warlike answer would have shocked you.” BrambleFake also snaps at the medicine cats over bothering Squirrelflight, and pushes Flipclaw on why he didn’t tear up the mouse den. He seems very concerned with the wellbeing of the warriors and making the Clan appear to be thriving. Could the spirit be from an era before much of the Code was established to protect the Clans from overhunting and overworking their cats?

Forgetfulness v Clue: This is the hardest one for me, because we all know the Erins are really good at typos and not so good at plotting sometimes. At the end of the leaked preview, after snapping at Flipclaw, BrambleFake apologizes slightly at tells Dewnose that he is training Flipclaw well. However, Dewnose trained Thriftear, and both siblings are now warriors, i.e. out of training. Additionally, BrambleFake refers to Dewnose as Dewtail. Unfortunately, scouring Warriors Wikia gives no clues as to who Dewtail would be, meaning this is either a typo or a cat from BrambleFake’s living era that we don’t know about.

Updates!

Just so y’all are aware, we did some little updates.

The HISTORY document now does not contain erroneous information like when cats were born or promoted to apprentice or warrior. It also no longer has non-plot important deaths. You can find those whenever you join the RP; we keep a detailed record of each moon in an RP updates section.

The APPLICATION is constantly updated to fit the standards for our Clans. Whether we are seeking male or female characters, or characters over a specific age, you can now easily see that during the application process!

Do you want to join the RP with a cat younger than what we are allowing? Don’t fret! We will have a LOT of kittens coming up. All 5 Clans are having newleaf litters. In RP, newleaf will begin on 03/01/2020. Kits will be born any time after this date, and if they aren’t adopted in server, they’ll be placed on our ADOPTABLES form!

Something is Wrong

As each medicine cat presses their nose to the glass, sleep comes. 

Except for Ivymask, who has never experienced this before, you all feel...apprehension. Last time, this had not gone well. This time... 

You feel your spirits lift from your bodies, a familiar sensation again to all of you except Ivymask. It feels like it's working! The connection to StarClan is there! 

...but something is wrong. 

 All of you stand together in a gray, starry expanse. There is no ground beneath you, no sky above you, but you feel as though you are standing solidly on some kind of surface. Mist and fog curl around you, shifting through the stars. Occasionally, the fog swirls, rising up into the form of a feline with dark eyes and a gaping maw. 

The words that come through are...partial. Broken. You feel the sensation of something reaching for you, pulling, trying to grasp at you...but it can't reach. 

"...the power is..." 

"...they are going t - ...." 

"...you must sa - ..." 

Each phrase is incomplete. Each time, it is accompanied by a foggy specter rising up, wailing soundlessly before fading back into the mist. 

Around you, the stars that you can see...begin to flicker out.

This isn't a cloud moving over the sky kind of flickering out. You watch, horrified, as stars begin to disappear, blinking out one at a time, randomly, but with growing speed. The sky turns slowly from that dull gray to darker, darker, until not a star remains and the sky turns black.

You stand in darkness, wondering if that is all, waiting to return to your body...

Suddenly, in front of you all, a foggy specter reappears...but different. It is charging towards you, eyes now burning, blazing with the light of the stars. Its jaws are open wide as it rushes you all. You cannot move. Your paws are stone and cannot be moved as the creature charges you all... 

As you all wake up with a gasp, one thing rings in your ears.

big ol’ lost stars dump

StarClan's connection to the Clans was severely weakened during the arc Vision of Shadows due to the high amount of code-breaking and loss of faith in the Clans -- Twig switching Clans so many times, the Kin, SkyClan coming and going and struggling to accept the signs of StarClan, the whole Tiger/Dove scandal etc.

 Enter Shadowkit, born far away from the influence of StarClan (we assume). Something held sway in the area he was born, as evidenced in Spiresight. We don't know if it was StarClan, however. It is possible something else held power, and it latched onto Shadowkit due to his Clan heritage. Perhaps his Clan heritage drew the spirits of the Clans, good and evil, to him? His vision may never have been StarClan, but rather the Dark Forest (or another power) influencing him to believe it was StarClan. The powers that be don't have to want to hurt Shadowpaw -- they want him to believe in them, after all. 

 As much as I love the possessed thing, it can't be Hawkfrost or Tigerstar the First: both are double-dead and therefore unable to possess a cat. Could it be the Dark Forest, then? Is it Darktail attempting to continue his revenge on the Clans? Obviously something revived 

Bramblestar. We cannot ignore he was dead for 2 (maybe 3) days before coming back to life. Multiple medicine cats confirmed this. Assuming that Rootpaw has inherited his father's gift, Bramblestar's spirit was unable to go to StarClan, and thus unable to reunite with his body on his next life. Something else was able to do that, however, leaving Bramblestar trapped in the ghost world that other cats were stuck in during AVoS. So now I ask: what is doing this? The Dark Forest has little claim atm with Tigerstar 1.0 and Hawkfrost both dead. I know no other cats with a massive vendetta against the Clans. Mapleshade is not double-dead, so it is possible she could be trying to regain power somehow.Ultimately, I believe 

Shadowpaw is not receiving messages from StarClan. I don't know what is speaking to him, but it's not them. I believe they are cut off from the Clans due to the amount of code-breaking and the struggles with the Clan structures we saw in the last arc. Overall, dammit, the Erins have hooked me again.

Another great M.A.P. I had not seen! This one focuses on the Power of Three arc and its protagonists. The artists did a great job expressing their talents, and there are some really amazing scenes in this one! It was hosted by Icedog McMuffin and had I believe 27 talented artists on it.

Very rarely does fanart or fan-made work manage to make me highly emotional these days since so much has happened in this crazy cat world.
