How can I portray a relationship between two men (my characters have some intimate scenes) without it seeming fetishised/sexualised? I see a lot of gay/pan/bi/etc. men who think female "slash" writers often show a homosexual relationship as oversexualised. I reread everything I write to avoid heteronormativity in my narrative but I was wondering about the fetishisation part? Thank you for all you do in the writing community!

We had a similar answer earlier this week, but I can talk more about it here as well. 

Fetishization: it means more than being sexy. It means being ONLY sexy. Or rather only there to turn on a particular audience.

A fetishized relationship would be one where the characters exist purely to turn on the reader. They’re not “real,” not well-rounded, they’re just an excuse to get on with the sexin’. They’re the poolboy losing his shorts. They’re “gosh, I don’t know how to pay for that pizza mister.” They’re finding some way to work it out. The simple answer to how to avoid fetishization: make your characters whole, complete people, and make an interesting and rich relationship.

Keep them real. They can be sexy, they can have erotic scenes, but if the characters, relationships and motivations are real and three-dimensional, don’t worry about whether they are fetishized.

How do you make those Pantone edits? They look really cool and I can't find how to make one anywhere!

Ahhh I’m so glad you like them! I honestly wasn’t expecting it to get so many notes. Pantone edits are actually pretty simple to make.

To any of my followers who haven’t seen my edit yet, you can check it out here.

Instructions are under the cut. I really hope this makes sense, lol. Feel free to message me again if you’re confused about anything!

This edit requires Photoshop (personally, I use Photoshop CC, but any version will work just fine) and MS Paint (Yes, you read that correctly. We’re going back to basics here). If you know how to apply PSDs onto images, and if you know how to paste images into MS Paint, then this will be super easy!

(I suppose you could technically do the entire thing in Photoshop, but I personally prefer using MS Paint because I find it to be a lot easier.)

Anyway…

1. Download the template and the fonts that you will need here. Open the template in Photoshop and save it as a PNG, and install the two fonts onto your computer.

2. Gather all the images that you would like to use in your palette. Each palette requires 9 images, kinda like a moodboard. Here are the images that I used for my Gaby Teller palette:

3. Crop/resize all your images to 130x110 pixels. Go into Photoshop and apply the PSDs that you would like to use onto each of your images. This PSD is my particular favorite. Feel free to adjust the brightness, contrast, coloring, etc. until you’re satisfied with how they look! Here’s how mine looked after editing them:

4. Open the template in MS Paint. Now it’s time to arrange your 9 images in the way how you would like. Paste your images on top of the images in the template. Since your images have already been properly cropped/resized, they should fit perfectly! Take your time. Be patient.

5. Use the color picker tool to select the color of the grey background. Put grey rectangles over the title at the top and the color label at the bottom. Also, put white rectangles over the adjectives in each box.

6. Using the Helvetica Bold font, type the title in the color of your choice, preferably a color that matches closely to the main color in your palette (I chose a nice peachy orange color). Don’t forget to put the ® symbol after it! Below the title is your subtitle. This can be either one word or an interesting phrase. The word “Palette” should be typed with the Helvetica Bold font, and your word or phrase should be typed with the Helvetica Light font.

7. Type in the color label at the bottom of your palette. The first line should say “PANTONE [year]®” in the Helvetica Light font. The second line should say “[hexcode of the color of your title] / #000000″ in the Helvetica Bold font.

8. Lastly, type in your adjectives into each box using the Helvetica Light font. After that, you’re done! Congrats, you just made a beautiful Pantone edit! :)
