Rebel Without a Crew: Or How a 23-Year-Old Filmmaker with $7,000 Became a Hollywood Player by Robert Rodriguez - 4/5
The mythology of El Mariachi has been something I’ve always been aware of, having attended UT’s film school (a few days ago, I was hanging out with one of my old professors even, and I mentioned reading this book, and she said “I was his TA!”) but the main conceit of Rebel Without a Crew seems to be demystifying Rodriguez’s ultra-low budget debut. The tagline itself is misleading — everybody who’s heard of El Mariachi has heard it was made for $7000, but Rodriguez clears up the myth by telling his story from start to finish. Firstly, the $7000 mostly went towards 16mm film and transfer to tape, which he edited from. The publicly available version of the film has been blown up to 35mm by Columbia Pictures and the sound was completely redone at an exponentially higher budget, and over half the book is devoted to restoring the film before it had even screened publicly! It’s fascinating and somewhat cathartic to follow Rodriguez’s diary from the almost Kafkaesque subjecting himself to medical testing for money all the way to Sundance & beyond. A reader could let this book be a frustrating reading experience, because Rodriguez does almost everything “wrong,” but there is something to be learned from how blatantly he ignores Hollywood’s rules. Certainly, he made things much harder for himself (like shooting everything MOS and syncing wild sound by hand in post!) but somehow… it worked? This book also includes the shooting script for El Mariachi, which was horribly written — the format is gratingly bad and it comes off as flat and amateurish, which is insane because the film itself is immaculately structured and paced! But perhaps writing is not his strength. The majority of the book is comprised of diaries from when he was 23, and it shows. But his anecdotes are surreally funny, from being completely broke with a check he’s not allowed to cash, and finally buying a toaster when the deal closes, to showing his wife the final cut of El Mariachi only for her to say “3.5 out of 5.”

If we do ever get a Reva spin-off show (or movie, whatever), I would like to put it out there that it shouldn't have a SINGLE cameo. Not one. No Rebels characters, no Sequels characters, no Force ghosts, no Ahsoka, no Luke or Leia, no other Jedi survivors, NOBODY. No cameos, just Reva and a cast of original characters.

Possible situation after Star Wars Rebels S4 Ep15:
Ezra: So we're stuck in this together, maybe we should lay aside our differences for a sec-
Thrawn: I owe you, Commander Bridger. The Emperor wanted to talk to me after my victory over Lothal and I'm quite sure I would've died.
Ezra: ohhhhhh, did the great grand-admiral Thrawn fuck up?
Thrawn: I guess you could put it that way. I ignored explicit orders just to help my people and see a treasured friend again. Also provoked a fight with another Grand Admiral. And made another man leave the Empire. You know...daily things.
Ezra: ...
Ezra: You have friends?
Thrawn: ...frist of all, how dare you?

Whatever you do don't think about the Ghost crew holding each other after Kanan's death- Don't think about Ezra full on sobbing curled up on the floor because he just lost the man he has viewed as a father for years, his mentor, his master, someone who has done nothing but be there for him and help him through some of the darkest times in his life and Hera not being able to comfort any of them because she just lost the love of her life, a man who has been with her through thick and thin, a man she just finally confessed her love to only to have him taken away from her SECONDS later, How Chopper just tries his best to keep her company and comfort her, reaching for her hand and trying to calm her down in between sobs, he doesn't know what to do since he hasn't seen her like this since her mother died. and definitely don't think about Sabine not knowing how to process his death in a healthy way so she just destroys whatever is in sight, just pure rage about the loss of a father figure, a man who helped her through so much guilt and pain, and don't think about Zeb trying to stay strong for all of them and only breaking down behind closed doors because Kanan was like his brother, and he lost him- just like he lost his people.
Just don't think about it, because all there is left once you remember is pain.

Not me every once in a while adding to this insanely expansive Star Wars AU for CQL/MDZS. Just made the sect political landscape set on a planet that is/was a colony of Mandalore, where because they’re quite separate from the planet’s political turmoil, are kind of is insulated and deal with their shit internally. The sects are also actual political entities now, having merged in part with the regional government at some point in the planet’s history. There’s still a distinction between the sect families and the actual government, but their relationship is much more tied and because of this the five great sects act as a government body together. The Wens have some sort of relationship with the empire when they take over Mandalore and gain access to their planet, and through them, problems begin to arise

Bix’s interrogation, Paak’s off screen hanging, the mass execution of workers on level two, the euthanasia of Ulaf, the tortured and murdered unnamed rebel pilot and the horrific description of the Dizonite genocide.
This show has really proven that Star Wars can be extremely dark and adult without ever having to show graphic violence of any sort. We’ve seen suffering and sometimes even brutality in this franchise but I’ve never been so deeply haunted by anything in Star Wars before. So that was a first.
The Andor crew once again, raises the bar.

I think one of the underlying themes of rebels, especially Kanan's story arc, is that tearing yourself down all the time hurts others, not just you.
Kanan at the start of the series thinks he's not good enough to train Ezra, which makes Ezra think he's not good enough to be Kanan's padawan. Later, in season 3 when Kanan is so focused on all the things he can't do because of his new disability, he furthers a rift between himself and Ezra, because Kanan lets his new excuse to look down on himself, ahem, blind himself to all the good he can do. It's only when he's got a real image of who he really is— flawed and broken, maybe, but not useless— that he's best able to help those around him.
Kanan's self-confidence issues, his fear of failure, as is with most people, stem not from thinking of himself too low, but from thinking he's capable of things he's not— he should be able to train Ezra and he should be able to take care of his crew and he should be able to get along just fine without his eyesight, and he should have stood with his master instead of running. Kanan has set himself up a standard that he can't live up to— no one could, and it make him feel awful for not being able to attain to it.
Worse than that, it makes Kanan assume he's letting everyone else down, when, really, it's his fear of not being enough for others that tears those others down the most. When the other members of the crew, especially Ezra, see Kanan holding himself to such an impossible standard, they're quick to assume he holds them to that standard as well— which, of course, he never does.
All of this boils down to why Ezra's frustrated "I don't want the best teacher, I want you," is exactly what Kanan needed to hear from him.
Kanan didn't need to hear that Ezra held him on a pedastal like where he'd always put himself.
Kanan didn't need to hear that he needed to be the perfect shiny version of himself that he wanted to be.
What Kanan needed to see was that his padawan saw him for all he was and all his flaws and chose him for who he was, not for who he was expected to be.

Request: how would the vees punish pet reader for rebelling, lying, disobeying, being rude, etc?
How do the yandere Vs punish pet reader
Warnings: Valentino, physical abuse, verbal abuse, electrical shocks, humiliation, sexualisation of reader, starving reader, forced affection, collars, hypnosis, drugging, forced entrapment, SA mentions
Tumblr media
Vox:
Tumblr media
For Vox, the severity of your actions will determine the severity of your punishment
And it depends on his mood
Minor infractions such as forgetting to do something or not getting something done on time will either earn you a very long dad scolding if he’s in a good mood or a few minor electric shocks if he’s in an especially bad mood
But if you have an attitude with him or your seen as being rude, he’s using the soul contract he has with you to get that soul collar around you and pulling you to him on your knees
Once your in front of him, he’ll send electrical shocks down the collar and into your entire body
He claims that the electric shocks will reprogram you to never repeat the behaviour, the same way that humans give shock collars to dogs when they misbehave
He has also grabbed you very roughly on your arms and bruised you when you brought up alastor to him, it wasn’t specifically called a punishment but it made sure you never did it again
If you break one of you major rules that the Vs set out for you without their permission, Vox will use his ability to his advantage
He’ll trap you in a hypnotised state for hours or even days if you have majorly pissed him off
It’s basically like being in a comatose state where you are aware of everything that’s happening to you but you can’t move, speak or do anything to stop it
And that can be terrifying for you when there are people like Valentino around
Vox used to leave you in his office when he did this, but after an incident where he found two demons trying to undress you while you couldn’t stop them, he decided it would be best to leave you in the upper level of the tower where you and the other Vs reside
Not that it’s much comfort since Valentino still frequently has parties up there and will taunt you by dancing with your comatose body or showing you off to other demons while you sit there unable to do anything or say anything
Vox let you kill the two demons who tried to do that to you, but you weren’t your self for a while after that incident
That makes Vox more hesitant to use this punishment if he’s unable to be around you 24/7 to make sure nothings happening to you, but he just can’t ignore major rule breaks
Vox will demand to hold you after each punishment and will wipe away your tears and act all paternal, as if he wasn’t the one who hurt you in the first place
Velvette:
Tumblr media
Velvette’s punishments severity will all depend on her mood
It doesn’t take much to be punished by velvette, your crime could range from not giving her enough attention to coming into work late
If she’s in a good mood, she’ll let you off with a small slap on the arm or kick to the shin for minor offences
Sometimes you’ll even be let off with a half an hour verbal abuse attack
But if she’s in a bad mood, you are getting pulled up in front of her entire department and put into unflattering or revealing outfits
She’ll use you as an example of what not to do by criticising everything from your looks to your body shape or style in front of her crew of models who all stare and laugh at you
You definitely prefer a quick slap or kick
For major rule breaks, she’ll overwork you to the point of pure exhaustion before shoving you into a bright room with overly loud rock music playing and leaving you in there for a few days
She’ll also not give you food or water during this time, but it can’t last for long since fortunately in your contract with Vox it states he has to keep you alive and fed with shelter
So the punishment ends after a few days, unless you try using you ability to stop the loud music
You tried it once and you got a beating along with a two day extension on your punishment
After your punishments, velvette always demands that you sleep with her in her bed because she ‘missed you’
After you fall asleep, she’ll secretly fix up your injuries and your too exhausted to even notice
While she enjoys using her minor punishments on you in her sick little power play, she finds the major punishments as an inconvenience since your out of work for at least two weeks
Valentino:
Tumblr media
Valentino’s minor punishments mostly work with threats, but that doesn’t make them any less effective
For minor offences like attitude, rudeness or incompetence in the workplace, he’ll make certain threats that he knows terrify you
He threatens to put in one of his films or he threatens to get Vox to put you under hypnosis for a few hours while he leaves you with his lore depraved actors
He’d never do it, but it still scares the shit out of you to knock off whatever behaviour that’s pissing him off
For major punishments however, he uses drugging as his favourite punishments
He’ll slip hallucinogens into your drink or food before putting you into fearful situations that makes you have extremely bad trips
Or he’d put things around you that remind you of how you died and will make you relive that
Or if he knew about your connection with angel dust, he’s make you watch angels extreme, unedited movies so can see every excruciating moment before he threatens to put you in angel dust’s position if you didn’t behave
His second favourite major punishment would be humiliation
He will put you in extremely revealing outfits and makes you pose before taking photos
He then gives the pictures to velvette and threatens to have her leak them on social media if you ever repeat your actions
He’d never do it, but it’s fun to see your reaction
After each punishment, Valentino will act like nothing happened and expects you to act the same
But you do notice that after every punishment with Valentino, some kind of gift will be left on your bed
He called it a reward but it was really just guilt telling him to do something by way of an apology
If you bring it up, youll receive a minor punishment and don’t expect a gift after that one

Star Wars Pilots Tournament - Finals!
Who's the better pilot??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Hera Syndulla:
she's my mom and i love her
She’s the best pilot hands down. Her and Han literally have beef and he knows she’s better 💕
the amount of times she escaped from the empire is insane. she’s also a general!! and was able to fly ships successfully on planets with weird gravity!!
i dont remember the names of the eps but the entire B-wing episode And that time she outflew Darth "the greastest star pilot in the galaxy" Vader with him in his nice little maneuverable modified TIE and her in a /FRIEGHTER/. Hera best Star Wars Pilot of all time
One of the foundational members of the Rebel Alliance, leader of Phoenix Squadron, Hera's skills as a pilot has saved countless lives, not to mention getting her crew and family out of tight spaces in the nick of time
There isn't a pilot in the imperial fleet who can outrun her!!!! And she parents a whole crew while she does it. no one is doing it like Hera. No added help of force sensitivity because she is simply THAT GOOD. THEE pilot of all time, ever.
She outflew literal Anakin Skywalker without the force.
One time she flew through an imperial hanger in orbit and jumped to hyperspace while in the middle of it to get past the blockade. Also she beats out force sensitive pilots just by being so good at it
Han Solo:
I mean he did the Kessel Run in twelve parsecs, I mean it’s Han Solo how much propaganda does an iconic character like Han Solo need

MATILDA PRIME!!!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
hi i definitely didn't forget to finish these so i could post them in a timely manner 😌
a bit about each of them under the cut :]
the thing they have in common is that instead of chaos energy causing the transformation from ant to mobian, it was the prism shards (which is why the eye colours are different)
maddie (new yoke)
she represents matilda's fighting side
a feisty member of the resistance who delights maybe a little too much in fighting
her closest friends are rebel and, shockingly, knux
they took her in after she escaped from the council post transformation
she's really intense, with less self control than matilda, she's always got a wild grin on her face in battle, and its a bit scary sometimes
her and knux started making bets on who can smash the most bots in a given fight
tilda
tilda is matilda's connection to nature and her origin as a little ant
she's just a little guy who lives in the woods with her ant friends
she transformed during thorn's rampage and got a bit of a beating before she really knew what was happening
she doesn't speak (she didn't learn how) and instead makes little noises she picked up from different critters
the little bugs and animals are her friends!!!!
sonic named her (he's not very creative)
there's a loneliness about her
tempest
tempest is matilda's revenge played completely seriously. she's on a mission and is not at all interested in fun
oh tempest.....by far the most different from matilda
a member of dread's old crew, she fought against the idea of him taking the shard, due to feeling connected to it
it didn't go well and left her with some scars
which sets her on a quest for revenge
tempest is matilda without much of matilda at all. she's focused, intense, and angry
I'll go into more detail eventually...but she ends up leaving her shatterspace with sonic, reluctantly working with him to ensure the safety of the shards
she interacts with shadow the most. it goes. very well

November 7th marks the 182nd anniversary of The Creole Ship Slave Revolt ✊🏾
Tumblr media
The Creole was a slave ship owned by the Johnson-Eperson Co. that set sail in November 1841 carrying 135 enslaved Afrikans & shipments of tobacco from Richmond, VA to New Orleans, LA. Among them was a brotha given the name, Madison Washington - a runaway slave from Canada who was captured in VA while searching for his wife - and his wife, given the name, Susan.
On Nov 7th, Washington along with 18 other males made their move to overthrow the ship. They overpowered the crew, killing one of the slavers in the process. The ship’s wounded captain, family, & crew survived the battle. The battle was a success though not without its cost; one of the rebels was mortally wounded and succumbed to his injury. Desperate to save his own neck, the overseer on board swore he'd navigate the ship for them.
First, the rebels demanded they set sail for Liberia, Afrika; but the long distance and low food/water supplies ixneyed that possibility. One of the rebels, a brotha given the name, Ben Blacksmen, asserted that they should aim for the British controlled islands in the West Indies; word had spread of previous rebels gaining their freedom there after overtaking American slave ships. He hoped the same fortune would befall them.
Tumblr media
They arrived in Nassau, Bahamas 2 days later. There, they were met by the harbor pilot and his men - a crew of all local Black Bahamians. The harbor pilot declared them free once ashore. Upon discovering that the Creole's captain was also mortally wounded, the American consul was notified of the revolt and demanded the arrest of Washington & all 18 rebels implicated in his death under charges of Mutany. His wife, Susan, and the other Afrikan survivors were given leave to live freely within the British boundary of the West Indies.
Some stayed in the Bahamas to start a new life, others sailed for Jamaica to do the same. Only 5 survivors chose to remain aboard the Creole set sail for New Orleans, LA to return to American Slavery ; 3 women, 1 boy, and 1 girl. It wasn't until April 16th of the next year that Washington and the other 18 rebels were freed and joined their companions on West Indian soil as freefolk.
Moreover, for their courage, unity, & nerve, 128 enslaved Afrikan Peoples gained their freedom from this day, making the Creole Slave Revolt THE most successful revolt in U.S. history.
We pour libations of water, speak their names, & offer prayers toward their elevation - especially those lost & returned to bondage.
