I almost lost 5k+ words because the ohwrite app I was using gave me a blank 'room' after I restarted my laptop and had to login again in Mozilla. I just spent an hour trying to find it.

Google gave me nothing for troubleshooting 'ohwrite' OTL

Then I realized... why is this Mozilla session not have any of my history and none of my extensions?

So, hoping against hope at this moment, I opened a Mozilla window again (while the current 'new session' was up) from the window bar and a Mozilla window with my extension popped back up.

Clicking on restore my previous session brought it back up, especially my 5k+ words in ohwrite.

In summary:

Mozilla fucked me up but I'm still gonna use it because the alternative would be worse.

Ohwrite didn't fuck me up but Imma try and look for a different writing app anyway. XD

I missed my puppy naming deadline. I am a terrible puppy mom. I did stay up all night chatting with the overnight crew at my home base (as well as the rangers + operators that just...didn't go home). We've come up with some options, and I'm too tired to narrow it down to one. Time for democracy.

These are mostly fashion focused, as the only personality trait she's displayed so far is a love of being photographed.

the new discord update is something i'm...disappointed about. yeahhh disappointed is apt. i think things like the launchpad and swipe gestures are neat ideas in theory, but their execution leaves much to be desired. not having gestures be a toggle is an accessibility nightmare, for one. the gesture responses are also too finicky. not smooth at all and often responding even when there's a swipe in a different direction. lagging significantly as well. discord's claims of improving load times fall flat when so many people are complaining about even longer load times.

complaints and observations and general ranting below the cut along with a list of hopefully helpful settings and alternatives for those who need it.

i feel like a lot of discord's issues with their updates in the past year or so could be negated--or at least abated--by expanding their pool of beta testers, testing for longer lengths of time, and (crucially) refining changes more before rolling them out. like...super basic shit they're just not doing to the extent they need to be doing them.

(on that note...discord, you literally have the email of every user, would it kill you to send out a few more surveys asking your userbase what possible new features sound good to them? i know a lot of people have discord email stuff turned off but can you at least try?! hell, if there was an option to opt in to email surveys and i thought they'd actually listen to responses they got, i'd turn it on out of sheer desperation at this point.)

also--and i know this is some extra work for them to do, and they seem to really hate that--i think that when such major changes are rolled out they should 1) be rolled out a bit slower/in smaller chunks and 2) at least SOME of the features should reasonably have a toggle to keep the old settings (*cough* GESTURES *cough*). their motive for this doesn't even have to be out of the good of their hearts! like, fuck telemetrics, but if they're gonna have them in their app anyways at least use telemetrics to like, gauge how many people are using these hypothetical toggles so you have another way to judge how users are responding. there! free idea! please use it.

anyways, i want to end on something helpful so here are a few bits of info about the updates i've discovered messing around, and also ways (or. well. A Way) to change them back if you have too much trouble adjusting. i'm sure plenty of people have noticed these things already, but i thought i'd compile them for those who want it all in one place or who haven't had the time or energy to mess with things in the app.

Settings > Accessibility > Reduced Motion: as far as i can tell, this does not seem to apply to the new transition animations in the app. oof, to say the least.

Messages > Add Friends > "Allow contacts to add me": many people were worried about this checkbox, but thankfully they seemed to have fixed the its-checked-automatically-and-doesn't-stay-unchecked thing. and, regardless, it doesn't actually change your app settings. if you already have Contact Sync disabled (Settings > Privacy & Safety > Find Your Friends > "Sync Contacts") checking this separate box will not suddenly enable it. however, if you have not disabled contact syncing then this checkbox will function as intended when you click the "Find friends" button below it.

Swipe-to-Reply: thankfully, you do not have to swipe to reply, the option to long press a message for a menu is still there. (for those wondering: swiping is nice accessibility for some and horrible accessibility for others, and should always be a toggle if you know what you're doing when making an app...*pointed stare into camera*). unfortunately, there's no way to turn swipe replies off that i've found.

Settings > Advanced > LaunchPad > "Full Screen Gesture": this claims to turn swipe replies off in exchange for using the gesture to activate the LaunchPad. however, after testing it out multiple times it does not actually turn them off and simply creates a gesture conflict that leaves both swipe replies and the LaunchPad more difficult to access.

Settings > Advanced > LaunchPad > "Right Edge Gesture": same issues as the first option with the additional difficulties of a more...sensitive touch response. forget "gesturing" if you so much as tap near the right edge of the screen it will attempt to pull out the LaunchPad. this right "edge" area also covers the reply button and settings menu toggles, by the way. so if you enabled this, good luck sending messages or turning the feature back off.

(did i mention these first two options also make it nearly impossible to swipe the left side channel and server lists open and closed? because they do.)

Settings > Advanced > LaunchPad > "Pull Tab": this is the option to choose if you want to keep the LaunchPad without gesture conflicts and shit navigation. it creates a tiny tab on the right edge of the screen for you to pull out the LaunchPad with, and you can adjust where the tab floats as well.

obviously, the final "Disabled" setting simply disabled the LaunchPad. Bye bye!

the fact that other color schemes for the app are behind a paywall is absolute bullshit by the way and i hate that there's no easy fix for that on mobile.

personally, i like that the vertical server list is here to stay and that DMs are now in a separate place, as this is a bit more similar to the desktop version where servers are vertically listed and DMs are in a different place (albeit still along the left edge).

before you ask, no there's no setting to get the old color scheme and layout back...UNLESS--!!!

(FOR ANDROID USERS ONLY; RIP EVERYONE ELSE.) if discord has become less accessible for you or you simply don't vibe with any of the shit currently going on, then you can download the previous version of the discord app through an APK file. first, disable auto-updates in google play. then uninstall discord from your phone. lastly, follow the instructions on this post that will help you download the necessary file from APKMirror (please note the recommended version is 206.16). do not use a different site, APKMirror is the safe one (well. safest. remember folks nothing online is 100% safe).

Talked with our therapist and it's finally sinking in for us. We are native. We're allowed to claim our heritage. Just because we had our culture erased and hidden from us purposefully by our parents until we were "of age" in their eyes to know our heritage doesn't mean we don't have a claim to the struggles and plight of our ancestors. Just because we are white passing doesn't mean that we are forced to forever reject our heritage and the culture of my ancestors.

With the small amount of progress we've made- we're able to begin working on trying to finally reconnect with our heritage. It'll be small at first, slow and arduous. But we will get there. We will not let our ancestors culture be forgotten even if their names have been erased. We will not follow the example of the past two generations and reject our heritage, we will reconnect, whatever it takes.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Hey y'all

It's been a hot minute. I know I been radio silent, and I got all y'all's love in my inbox. I didn't want to leave anyone in the lurch, for any folks that remember me, and I wanted to post an update.

It's been a long road, but I'm still alive and well. I did manage to find a job, thanks to my aunt, and I'll have been in upstate NY for the past three years with my current company this August.

Things changed on a dime when I got up here. I'm making enough to get my own car, and to hold down a two-person household, on one income. It's been its own struggle with different things up here, but my life has improved drastically.

I still struggle with creativity. Managing a household financially, by yourself, is draining. But I'm trying to get the mental health help I need, and I'm even getting physical improvement with ailments I didn't even realize I had.

To see that most of y'all are still around is heartening, even if this blog is still not active. I won't be taking it down. There's too many good folks, too many good memories, and too much fun on here to just throw it all away. One of my goals this year is to make progress towards becoming more active again.

I've also taken up with D&D more frequently (which may be where a lot of my creativity has been going, lately, lmao)! In my effort of becoming a better version of myself, I've been able to help my beau grow into his creativity that was strangled in his previous home life. I'm happy and thankful for that. I'm thankful for the ability to be able to hold it down, while he continues to search for work that will let him stay safe, even if the pandemic is winding down. I'm thankful for my aunt, who put out personal funds to help me get up here when I had nothing to put towards the trip expenses.

I'm thankful to y'all for supporting me in a very dark time in my life.

Thank you. And I hope to start chugging back along, soon.

Dream Star Trek series pitch:

Episodic wildlife documentary series called Wildman's Wild Universe. Older Samantha Wildman and adult Naomi (who went into life sciences like her mom, doing some sort of environmental science) host it. Every episode features a new sci-fi animal and little slice-of-life zoological adventures. It's all low stakes adventures, bright colors, and fun animal puppets as far as the eye can see. I guess they can use green-screen effects for the animals, but ideally it would mostly be little muppets. Minor interpersonal conflicts and occasionally someone gets treed by a Hengrauggi and the rest of the film crew has to lure it away. No planets or ships get exploded (but a little science vessel does sure get into a tight spot every episode), and no alien animals are harmed in filming.

Characters and episodes under the cut:

Every so often even Seven guest stars and hangs out. One episode she introduces the Wildmans to her cool new girlfriend and then they all observe a pterosaur flock on Betazed.

Other Voyager characters show up every so often. Obviously Tuvok appears in the Vulcan wildlife episode, where his children also show up and they all help the Wildmans solve a poaching mystery. But also the fucking nobody Voyager crew get to show up sometimes, because I love them. Tal Celes and Billy Telfer guest star on the episode where the Wildmans look for giant glacial shrimp on Andoria (they were helping navigate the experimental watercraft) and their sub gets trapped and they all have to figure out how to free it.

Other episodes include (season 1 has a big emphasis on extinction and conservation efforts, culminating in the season finale):

Targs on Qo'noS, and the difference between wild and domesticated targs. There's a Klingon Jackson Galaxy-esque figure advocating for better targs understanding and ownership.

An update on the whale situation on Earth.

An episode about thylacines: "thought extinct until a small pack was located in 2038" Samantha says ecstatically. We have to have some hope what with world war III and all.

Touring an animal rehabilitation center on Ktaris. Greskrendtregk appears in this one. Canonical Ktaris appearance. Canonical Greskrendtregk appearance! Everyone clap for Greskrendtregk!

The Wildmans observe some Corvan gilvos & talk about their miraculous return from the brink of extinction after being relocated to Brentalia. The gilvos look just as shitty as they do when Riker's holding them in his arms at the end of New Ground & I laugh heartily at them.

Talking about the dangers of introducing non-native animals to new planets. The featured animals on the planet look suspiciously like banana slugs. Weird. How’d they get there? Who could have done this? (Hoshi Sato. It’s not stated in show...but we all know its Hoshi Sato and Sluggo who have done this)

This is obviously all inspired by my childhood love of the Kratts’ Creatures tv show, so there should be just a little fucking animated guy in the in-universe episodes as the “kid fact explainer” character like Ttark on Kratts’ Creatures. Torn between it being a flotter hologram, a Neelix hologram explaining the food chain, or a Dr. Phlox hologram presenting on fauna & medicine in little animated asides. Maybe all 3.

However!

As one of my biggest complaints is New Trek’s over-reliance on legacy characters, we do also get new characters:

New betazoid character as the super nervous cameraman on his first job out of Betazed Polytechnic. He’s kind of scared of animals, and has never left Betazed before, but is determined to overcome his fears!

Nausicaan expert on xenomegafauna & she's super enthused about space megatherium and lunar terror birds.

Aforementioned Klingon with Jackson Galaxy vibes.

Romulan ichthyologist, who was responsible for evacuating a viable population of Romulan pupfish from Romulus before it exploded. They seem very grumpy and aloof but it is a farce! They love fish and their friends. They are holding them at a distance but sometimes the facade drops.

It’s a mini Starfleet crew, for a science vessel of like, 9.

Season Finale is yet another time-travel Janeway showing up, ready to wreck this timeline to get Voyager home like 3 years faster. Samantha has to give a rousing Star Trek™ speech. Maybe Janeway could get the Voyager home faster by unraveling this timeline. Maybe that would spare them all some suffering. Maybe this timeline was doomed from the start. But Samantha knows that in this timeline, her daughter gets to the alpha quadrant alive and that they are still together, and who knows what Janeway’s new timeline will hold. And also! In this timeline the Bolian green-bellied moth was brought back from the brink of extinction after decades successful conservation efforts, and that also makes this timeline worth fighting for.
