The sound of a shrill alarm pulled Natasha away from her dreams, and she opened her eyes to see light filtering through the curtains and dappling on top of the covers. She felt warm and safe, her mind not really registering her surroundings just yet, and she slowly allowed herself to wake up.
She looked over at you, still asleep on the other side of the bed, your back to her as she listened to your gentle breathing. It must have been a dream last night then, because she could have sworn the two of you had cuddled, and the feeling of your body close to hers was downright intoxicating. It made made more sense that it was a dream, of course, but she still couldn’t shake how real everything had felt, and chalked it up to her overactive imagination running wild because she was sleeping in the same bed as you. Her phone rang at that moment, and she sat up in bed and reached for it, not even bothering to look at the caller ID. “Hello?”
“Hey,” Steve’s voice came through the other end. “I’m just calling to check on you, make sure you’re awake. We’re going to meet down at the lobby of the hotel in an hour, and then the bus will take us to the stadium.”
Natasha nodded. “No problem, I’ll see you down there.”
After she hung up, you stirred from your position on the other side of the bed. “Anything wrong?’ you asked sleepily as you sat up, fighting back a yawn and rubbing your eyes.
“Steve was just letting me know the plan for the day,” Natasha said. “And making sure I was alive I guess, because this is the first time I’ve ever had a wake up call for a game.”
You nodded as you started to get out of bed. “There’s always something that goes wrong when we travel to Boston,” you said. “Last time it was that Clint’s alarm didn’t go off and he was almost late to the game, so I guess Steve has taken it upon himself to make sure nothing like that happens again this year.”
The rest of the morning went by quickly as Natasha got ready for the game, and you did the same. She had never seen you prepare for a game before, and it was interesting to see you now, still in your pajamas but hunched over the tiny desk in the corner of the hotel room, writing down notes and occasionally making a phone call. When she left to meet the others, you were still sitting like that, and she wished that you had said goodbye to her, but you were too absorbed in statistics, personal anecdotes, and other preparations for the game today to really notice her leaving.
When she arrived to the hotel lobby, Bucky and Sam were waiting for the rest of the team. They smiled when they saw Natasha, and she knew immediately what they were going to ask. "So," Sam spoke first. "How was your little sleepover last night?"
Natasha scowled and rolled her eyes at them. Bucky just laughed, and they knew she was just joking around. She also knew the rest of the team probably was aware of the fact that she had to share a room with Y/N, but she really didn't want to answer questions about it. She was then incredibly grateful that the rest of the team soon began to trickle into the lobby, and the subject of Natasha’s sleeping arrangements was dropped.
***
There were always nerves that bubbled in Natasha’s stomach before playing, and this set of games was no different. She played well though, and the team managed to completely demolish the Red Sox for all the games they played against them, which definitely was a good feeling, considering how unwelcome they all felt for the time they’ve been there.
Instead of going out right after the final game was over, everyone elected to head back to New York before they hit the bars and clubs in celebration, so it was about two days later did the reality of the situation really sink in for Natasha. The rest of the team was already drunker than she’s ever seen them before, as they laughed together and celebrated their victories.
The press team had been invited out with everyone, but only you and Loki ended up going, the others making excuses about report deadlines and the fact that they were too old to be drinking and partying until the sun came up. Natasha was just glad that you hadn’t said no, and she made every excuse to stay near you all night, from getting drink refills for you to coming up with stupid questions to ask you just so she could keep the conversation going. It was stupid really, the trouble she went to when she couldn’t even pull herself together enough to admit to her crush and ask you out on a date, but she didn’t care right now.
Tonight you seemed slightly more laid back, but not outrageously so. You didn’t really drink enough to be considered anything other than tipsy and you appeared to have remarkable control of your liquor, a skill Natasha imagined you had picked up once you started breaking into the reporting world. Your entire life was about keeping up appearances and putting the best foot forward, so you couldn’t exactly let loose whenever you wanted to, just in case you accidentally revealed some juicy Yankee secrets while drunk.
As the night went on, you drank more and more, and you became openly affectionate towards everyone, especially Natasha. Your hand rested on her leg for a moment as you two sat at the bar discussing your favorite shows and movies, and she could have sworn that she saw your gaze flicker down to her lips on more than one occasion. It was clear (to her at least), that you liked her, and she decided to try and test that hypothesis.
The alcohol in her system made her slightly braver, and for each flirty look or lingering gaze you gave her, she returned it twice over. She drank more and you drank more, and the events of the evening were starting to blur together.
Kissing you out in the alley next to the bar felt like a dream, but it was in fact the one thing Natasha would remember for the rest of her life. The two of you had gone out to get some air and get away from a man who had been saying some particularly disgusting things to Natasha, and the next thing she knew, she had her back against the brick wall of the alley and your face was inches away from hers. “Can I kiss you?” she asked softly.
You nodded, and seconds later her lips were on yours. It was slightly messy and needy (you both were drunk after all), but she let out all of her emotions in that moment. Her hands found your waist, and you gasped slightly as she pulled you closer. She knew she was strong from all of the training and lifting she had done over the years, so she was able to maneuver you so that she was the one on the outside, and you had your back against the wall.
She didn’t know who suggested it, but the next thing she remembered was heading back to her place, struggling to get the door unlocked because she didn’t want to stop kissing you. Your kiss was far more intoxicating than any liquor she’s ever consumed, and she couldn’t help the small moans that came out of her mouth as you kissed her with the passion of a thousand suns.
Falling into bed with you before ever asking you out on a proper date was not exactly how Natasha planned this to happen, but she wasn’t complaining in the slightest.
***
Despite all her wild hopes and dreams coming to pass, she should have known it was too good to be true the next morning, when she woke up to an empty bed and a note on the pillow. Reaching over to grab it, she squinted to read your handwriting in the little bit of light the gaps in the blinds provided.
Natasha,
What I did last night was incredibly unprofessional, and I deeply apologize. I have a policy that I do not date anyone that I work with for a reason, because it could put both our careers at risk if the wrong people found out. I hope you can forgive me for leaving so early, and I once again apologize for the mistakes I’ve made.
The word “mistakes” hit Natasha like a freight train, and she dropped her head back down to her pillow, desperately trying to stop the tears from welling in her eyes. But it was no good, and she was forced to experience the wave of emotions that rushed forth and consumed her.
Unfortunately there was nothing she could do to change any of it, even though she wasn’t sure if she would or not. All that she could do was return to work on Monday and try to hold herself in the most professional way possible.
And much to Natasha’s chagrin, it was clear to any onlooker that something had happened between the two of you. You didn’t show up to practice, which wasn’t obvious in itself, but Natasha’s sour mood was definitely an indicator to the rest of the team that something was wrong.
“You alright Romanoff?” Bucky asked as they were playing catch and Natasha hurled the ball in his direction so powerfully so that it stung his hand through his glove when he went to catch it. “Is something bothering you?”
“I’m fine,” she said tersely, even though she knew that was a big fat lie.
To his credit, Bucky didn’t press her further, allowing Natasha to sulk as much as she wanted during practice (as long as everything got done). She really hoped the coaches didn’t notice her foul mood, because she really didn’t want to have to explain everything to them. Maybe Bucky thought Natasha had asked you out and you had rejected her, and that’s why he wasn’t really bothering her. In a way that was true, but there was a lot more to the story than that.
When the next game rolled around, Natasha watched the stadium at every moment she could, hoping to catch a glimpse of you somewhere, but you were nowhere to be found. You always greeted the team before heading off to wherever you broadcasted the game from with Loki, but this time it was only Stephen and Bruce that passed through the stadium. She wondered if you had told anyone what happened between you and her, and if they had any opinions on how you should handle it. She knew it was stupid to continue to care like this after you had so clearly rejected her, but her heart wasn’t going to give you up that easily, so she was stuck living like this for as long as it took to find someone else.
Bucky, Sam, and Clint definitely noticed something at the games. Maybe they clocked your absence and then they saw the way Natasha was frantically searching the stands for a glimpse of you before the team stepped onto the field, or maybe they heard about the two of you making out in the alley next to the bar back when you went out with the team that night.
She wasn’t even sure they knew exactly what had happened, but it didn’t change the fact that they were all being extra nice to her. No teasing and no comments about you left any of their lips, and it definitely meant a lot to Natasha that she didn’t have to answer questions about you all the time when she’d rather just forget about your existence.
They had even invited her to dinner after the game, which was where she was heading now. The rest of the team had already parted ways, which meant the clubhouse was empty, and none of them had anything to do. The plan was to order pizza and just spend the night chatting about the previous games, their upcoming opponents, and whatever else they wanted until the janitors kicked them out of the building.
However, it soon became clear that they had no intention of showing up for this “dinner,” because when she stepped into the common area, there was no one in there but you.
And she definitely knew they had something to do with it when the door slammed behind Natasha, and Bucky’s voice came through. “I don’t what happened between you two, but you need to fix it this instant!” he said. “And we’re not letting you out until you do!”
You stared at Natasha, not sure what to say. She stared back, equally lost for words. Were her teammates just sitting on the floor outside, making sure none of them left? Were they planning on listening to everything they said? She would rather die than let them know what had happened between you two, especially if you were going to reject her yet again (which she suspected you would).
After a few moments, Clint’s voice came through the door. “I don’t hear any talking in there!”
“You three morons better not be listening!” Natasha called back.
“Fine,” Bucky responded. “We’ll be back in ten minutes, but don’t think you’re going anywhere.”
She was about to ask what that meant, but then the unmistakable sound of furniture being moved in front of the door (and the strained grunts of all three of her teammates) came through. She knew there was a display desk next to the entrance of this room, and they probably pushed that in front of the door so no one could escape.
“We’ll leave you alone now,” Clint said, and Natasha turned back towards you.
“I’m sorry about them,” she said quietly. “They must have realized something had happened-”
But you cut her off. “Natasha, it’s me that should be sorry. I tried to handle the situation professionally, but I also was childish in avoiding you after that. I never got to apologize for that night either.”
“Did you think you made a mistake?” Natasha asked, before she could pull the words back in.
You were silent for a few moments, obviously not sure what to say. “Do you see it as a mistake?” you eventually asked.
“Y/N, I’ve liked you from the first moment I met you here, I don’t think I could ever consider it a mistake,” she said. “If you do think it was a mistake, I’ll leave you alone, but if you don’t, I want to know why you can’t seem to take a chance on me.”
“I like you too,” you said. Natasha’s heart soared hearing those words, but you weren’t out of the woods quite yet.
“Then why did you leave?”
“I have that no-relationships-at-work rule for a reason,” you said quietly. “If anyone, and I mean anyone in the reporting industry found out that we were involved, even just for that one night, you would lose all the credibility you had built up in the eyes of the public. They would look at every positive word I’ve ever written about you and claim that I was biased. I can’t put you at risk like that.”
“What if I didn’t care?” Natasha asked, the beginnings of a tear forming in her eyes.
“What do you mean?”
“I love baseball, but I don’t want to sacrifice my happiness for it,” she said. “Because that morning, when I woke up and I thought you were beside me, I was the happiest that I had been in a long time.”
“Natasha,” you said, tears forming in your eyes as well. “I don’t know what to say.”
“Screw the rest of the press,” she said. “I want to be with you, and I don’t care if it has to be a secret. If someone finds out, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there, but I don’t want to lose you over just one potential outcome.” She stepped closer to you, and now you were barely a foot apart. Taking your hand, she leaned in slightly. “Can I kiss you?”
You nodded in response, and Natasha didn’t wait another moment before capturing your lips with her. It was softer and slower than the kiss outside the bar that night, but still equally perfect.
The two of you continued to kiss, and she was so lost in it that she didn’t even hear the sound of the furniture being moved away from the door. She did hear the door open though, and the two of you flew apart.
Clint was standing in the doorway of the room, with his eyebrows raised and an I-told-you-so look on his face. “I’m guessing you figured out whatever was going on between you two then?” he asked.
“Yes,” Natasha said lowly. “So you and the rest of the idiots are no longer needed.”
He raised his hands up in mock defeat. “Alright, message received. I’ll see you both tomorrow then.”
Natasha watched him as he left and closed the door once again. “I’m sorry about those three,” she said.
“Don’t worry about it,” you said. “They mean well.”
Natasha laughed quietly as she leaned in to kiss you again, and she knew that she would eventually have to thank her friends, but right now, she wanted to continue to enjoy this moment.

Longtime Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield died Sunday morning at age 57, the team announced in a news release.
No cause of death was provided, though the team issued a statement earlier this week acknowledging that the former pitcher was battling a “disease,” and requesting privacy for the Wakefield family.
“Our hearts are broken with the loss of Tim Wakefield,” the Red Sox posted on X on Sunday. “Wake embodied true goodness; a devoted husband, father, and teammate, beloved broadcaster, and the ultimate community leader. He gave so much to the game and all of Red Sox Nation.”
Red Sox legend and baseball Hall of Famer David Ortiz posted a photo on Instagram of him hugging Wakefield, writing, “I can’t describe what you mean to me and my family, my heart is broken right now because l will never be able to replace a brother and a friend like you.”
“He was real. He was CLASS. This is truly horrible news,” longtime Boston sportswriter Bob Ryan wrote on X.
Wakefield was drafted out of college as a first baseman but when his career stalled he turned to a rarely thrown pitch to make the majors. He became a right-handed starting pitcher famous for being one of the few big leaguers to feature a knuckleball and in his career he won 200 games,
Wakefield played two seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates before beginning a 17-year stint with the Red Sox. He won a pair of World Series championships with the Red Sox, including their win in 2004 after a historic rally in the American League Championship Series and their subsequent MLB title in 2007.
He was the recipient of the 2010 Roberto Clemente Award recognizing “extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.”

Wednesday 10th April 2024
Erev tov,
I hope all who are reading this are doing well. I am exhausted but can't complain. Had a busy day today. I worked 8.30 until 17.00. Had a mostly pretty good day at work. Working in the field on the gas contract, I listen to the radio or podcasts a lot while at work. I think I mentioned in my post yesterday that I went to secondary school and university in the US; having gone to school in Connecticut, I am a supporter of Boston sports, so enjoy listening to the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics on Sirius XM sattelite radio. Unfortunately, all three teams lost today, though I didn't listen to the Red Sox. That game was on at 4 am Melbourne time, so I was still asleep. The Celtics and Bruins were on at the same time this morning, so I was switching back and forth.
I also listened to Star Talk, Arnold Schwarzeneggers Pump Club, the Top Gear Magazine Podcast, The Football Daily, Who We Are Now with Richard Hammond, The Ancients and Krav Talk. That pretty much kept me entertained while I worked.
Then, after work, I came home, read the newspaper sport and comics sections, and watched the new episode of X-Men 97. Then I went and davened maariv, fed my cats, had dinner, and got ready for my evening classes. Now, I am winding down my day. I had a shower and got ready for bed. Once I finish writing this, I will read for a bit and watch Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon and go to sleep so I can do it all again tomorrow.
Before I wrap things up, I just want to mention that tonight marks the eleventh yahrzeit of my Uncle Rob z''l who passed away 3rd of Nissan eleven years ago. He was a good man who unfortunately struggled most of his adult life with addiction. I can remember being aware of his struggles from a young age but have no memory of him ever being off the wagon. He always managed to be clean and sober when he was around us when I was a kid. Unfortunately, in the end, it was health complications stemming from his substance abuse that was his downfall. So I strongly encourage you, if you feel you are struggling, please seek help. You don't have to do it alone. Help is out there, and with HaShem's help and a network of support, you can overcome your demons.
Anyway I am going to wrap this up.
Laila Tov.

Late Slam Helps Sox Past Twins.
Twins 6 Red Sox 8 W-Winckowski (2-1) L-Brigham (0-2) SV-Cepeda (1)
The Minnesota Twins had both their split-squad games cancelled due to rain in Southwest Florida. They returned to action across Daniels Parkway at JetBlue Park against the Red Sox tonight. The Twins started the scoring in the third inning as Willi Castro reached on an infield single and Kyle Farmer reached on a Rafael Devers error. Eddie Julien lined a run-scoring single to center to put the Twins on the board. The Red Sox answered in the bottom of the third when Reese McGuire led-off with a single and Jarred Duran lined a double off the center field wall. This tied the game at three after three frames. The Twins wouuld respond in the fourth as Christian Vazquez drew a two-out walk. Matt Wallner belted a Nick Pivetta change-up out to right for a two-run homer. Boston would respond in the fifth when Reese McGuire, Jarren Duran, and Rafael Devers started the inning with singles. Trevor Story knocked in a pair with a base hit to left to tie the game at three after five frames. The Twins would rally in the seventh with a Kyle Farmer base hit and Eddie Julien walk. Carlos Correa delivered with a double to left, which scored two runs and put the Twins back in front. The Red Sox inched closer in the bottom of the seventh with a Jarren Duran double to right. He reached third on a grounder and Trevor Story hit a sac fly to left. Boston pulled within a run after seven innings of play. The Red Sox kept hitting in the eighth as they quickly loaded the bases. Reese McGuire crushed a Jeff Brigham pitch out to right for a grand slam to give Boston an 8-5 lead. The Twins loaded the bases in the ninth and Reidis Sena uncorked a wild pitch. Felix Cepeda had to come on and struck out Brian O'Keefe to end the ballgame.
-Final Thoughts- Chris Paddack got knocked around a bit tonight, but got some innings in. He went 4 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts. Griffin Jax retired two men, Jay Jackson gave up a run and retired five men, and Jeff Brigham gave up four in 2/3 of an inning. Hobie Harris got the last out of the eighth. Eddie Julien led the offense with two hits. The Twins hit 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. The Twins will return home to host the Orioles tomorrow afternon. Grayson Roddriguez will face Joe Ryan in a Sunday matinee.
