#red vs blue theory
Text
Me: *watches the new rvb trailer*
RVB: this will be the FINAL Red vs Blue season
Me: I don't believe you, but continue.
RVB: who is the mysterious voice????
Me: It's Sigma; he's wearing the Meta suit and the closeup shot of Epsilon's head shows orange flames reflecting off his helmets face from where the voice is in the room. Plus he's not in the lineup behind Epsilon in the shot where the other ai appear behind him.
RVB: what does this mysterious voice want????
Me: probably to acquire the Beta ai and finally have all the ai together, thus potentially recreating Alpha at the cost of the other ai.
RVB:...so, you still gonna watch it?
Me: oh definitely! I'm extremely excited.

thoughts on wash's fighting style and his position in pfl because I can (utc because it's really long lol):
wash is very unique among the freelancers for a variety of reasons, one is that he doesn't specialize in one specific area of anything, he's a jack of all trades who is able to fill in for other freelancers if necessary. for example in s9 when york was supposed to be unavailable for lock picking/infiltration duty, carolina immediately went to wash (and we are ignoring that york is not shown to be good at lock picking!) if she trusted wash to fill in for their specialist in one area, I feel it's not a stretch to imagine that he can do so in other areas as well.
need a snipper but north and wyoming aren't available? wash can cover. need someone to get into the enemies' computer systems in place of ct, south, or york? wash can cover. need someone for stealth or reconnaissance in place of florida? wash can cover. etc etc.
wash's combat style reflects that jack of all trades, master of none thing very well too, as the way that he fights is very grounded and pragmatic when compared to the rest of the freelancers. a lot of people like to portray wash as less skilled than the other freelancers, but in truth I believe that wash being able to keep up and compete with the other freelancers despite his lack of dramatic flare is a show of just how competent and skilled of a soldier he is. wash is so good at doing what he does that he doesn't need all that extra bullshit to get the job done. sure, he might not look as Cool and SexyTM as the others while doing it, but completing the mission and surviving to live another day takes precedence over all else.
another way of looking at it is that wash fights in the same way that the odst's do, that is to say that he fights like a human who cannot plow his way through the battlefield in the same way the spartans can. wash's style of fighting is one that employs careful planning and targeted hit and run tactics—this is most obvious in recovery one and s6 whenever he's fighting against the meta.
I also feel it's important to note that wash is not a cqc fighter, he can handle himself if he gets into a cqc situations but his primary weapon is the battle rifle—which is a mid/long range weapon. if I'm being honest wash's way of fighting makes waaaaaaaaay more sense if you look at him not as someone who is trained to primarily fight against other humans, but as someone who is trained to fight against 8ft 2 ton aliens with plasma weapons that can slice through the hulls of UNSC battle cruisers (ships designed to travel through space!!!) like a hot knife cuts through butter and have the technology to raze entire planets to the ground in a matter of minutes.
I also personally believe that wash has the most military experience out of all the freelancers right behind florida, wyoming, and maine (who I hc as a spartan iii). we know that wash did his basic training in the leonis minoris system (a canonical halo system) and that system had two of the three planets glassed by the covenant in 2537, and wash directly references these events in the washed hands interview in the fan guide and the way he says it implies that he likely completed his basic training that same year. now I have some grievances with the timeline given in the book when it comes to the events depicted in the freelancer saga because it's just kinda weird, but everything prior to that bit is actually fine (though I hate the way that they decide to number the timeline lmao).
now in halo canon the human/covenant war ended in 2552, and according to the timeline in the rvb fan guide that was 1 year after alpha was sent to blood gulch. project freelancer is first cleared for funding 7 years BBG (before blood gulch), and recruits the 50 freelancers 5 years BBG. doing some math we can determine that pfl was cleared for funding in the year 2544, and the freelancers are recruited for pfl in 2546. so assuming wash finished his basic training in 2537 that would mean that he was in the military for 9 years before he joined pfl, and while wash is addressed as a corporal (e-4) in the washed hands interview he was most likely demoted to that after he was court martialed, and he was possibly going to be dishonorably discharged from the military because of his disorderly conduct.
using the current standards used by the us marine corps when it comes to rank progression, wash was most likely a sergeant (e-5) who was very close to being promoted to a staff sergeant (e-6). wash as a sergeant would've essentially been the assistant manager/co-leader of the platoon he was in while his staff sergeant was the manager/leader, and that would explain why he was able to even get into an argument with his CO in the first place. I believe wash held a similar position in pfl, as it's kind of implied that he did some management stuff in pfl (talking with internals/upper brass, him feeling comfortable with openly questioning carolina about whether york should be allowed on the sarcophagus heist, and of course he shows the ability to direct and somewhat lead south in recovery one, and him leading church, caboose, and the reds in s6, and him taking charge of the meta in s8).
even if wash wasn't a sergeant as a corporal he would've been in a position to be the leader of a fire team, so basically wash isn't some rookie who had no clue wtf he was doing as many in the fandom like to characterize him; he is an experienced and battle hardened soldier by the time he joins pfl no matter how you look at it.
to put all of that into context, carolina is born 29 years BBG, which would be 2522. so during pfl she's in the 24-28 range and she wouldn't have joined the military until 2540. I actually personally head canon that wash is the same age as carolina, but that he illegally enlisted at 15 because of a crappy home life, but ignoring my head canon and assuming that he joined the military at 18 instead, he would've been born in 2519.

Have you noticed how important love and friendship are in AvA?
let's go to the first chapters...
Tumblr media
If Dark hadn't trusted and cooperated with the Chosen...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If TSC hadn't made a deal with Alan for his friends...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If the King hadn't sacrificed everything to bring back his son...
Tumblr media
If Purple hadn't done anything to win back his father's love...
We'd probably just see Victim.

Of course, Victim also had a contribution.

If Penny does come back, it should be as an AI. like from HALO/Red vs Blue, an artificial intelligence computer program that can freely move between machines and so forth.
My reasoning is that the process used to save Penny from Watts' virus was to have Ambrosius use Penny's robot body to make a new body, and her aura becomes a 100% flesh and blood construct. The new robot body then vanishes. But here's the thing. Ambrosius is the spirit of creation, not destruction. So how could he destroy Penny's robot machinery? What if it became pure data itself, and went to the nearest appropriate receptacle.
Also, it would be the ultimate bait-and-switch. After we are told that Penny's robot half was "just extra" that would be the only part still existing. But as Ruby said, "You think just because you've got nuts and bolts instead of squishy guts makes you any less real than me?"

Hey, uh.
We need to talk about Recovery One, and more specifically South (and Wash but that's a given for me).
Here are the relevant facts:
1. The AI were all supposed to be pulled after the Epsilon incident and put into storage.
2. There is a deleted scene that shows North carrying South to safety after their battle on the MoI.
3. Wash did not know that North still had Theta.
4. South and North were together when Wash showed up to recover Theta.
5. South got North killed, even if it was Meta that struck the blow.
6. Wash assumes South being left alive was bait to slow Wash down, because Wash had Delta, and the Meta wants the AI.
7. Wash: “In the past month I’ve been ordered to the sites of five different dying Freelancers in an effort to recover their intelligence programs.” This might have been retconned; before seasons nine and ten it was implied if not outright stated that many agents had AI fragments, not just those on the leaderboard, but after seasons nine and ten it seems like there were only a few AI that were then given to only some of the top agents. Of them, only North and York had their equipment recovered by Wash.
8. South was in the recovery force before and during her time with Wash. Her mission was to draw the enemy out, without Wash catching on that she was working for the Recovery Force, so that a new strategy could be devised to take the Meta down.
9. Command’s profile of Wash indicated that he would not kill South despite being ordered to. Wash says he kept South alive because he knows he can’t take down the Meta by himself. Delta confirms that Wash’s “battle rating” is too low, according to Freelancer’s records.
10. Taking Wash out was not in South's mission statement, nor was taking Delta and running. South chose to do those things on her own.
Conclusions:
Both South and North stayed with the program even after the “attack on Command” (the crash).
It would make sense for PFL to want to keep close tabs on North since he had an AI, and if he refused to give up Theta, they probably wouldn’t have tried to force him for fear of scaring him off. If anything, they would have used South against him to make him stay, because North obviously stayed for South. He saw the writing on the wall and loved his sister enough to first fight her instead of leaving her to Tex, then continued working at the organization he knew was off (even if he never figured out why) to keep an eye on her.
South stayed because she wanted an AI. South wanted to be acknowledged as her own person, as good enough on her own. To her, an AI was a symbol of her independent success (ironically enough), and as short sighted as she was she really didn’t think much beyond that. PFL took advantage of that. Additionally, South likely resented North for having saved her from Tex. (Side note, South got North killed in an effort to save herself, but I believe that it was a heat of the moment decision. Still shows how her love for him had cooled.) South also resented the program for blue-balling her, not to mention still pairing her with North after everything. And she probably realized that they were lying again about giving her an AI. She had no evidence that she could trust Wash, either, and so shot him in the back and took Delta.
It’s possible that North and South were both part of the Recovery Force, and Wash showed up to the aftermath of a mission gone wrong - the same mission of drawing out the Meta. If that’s true, Wash was kept completely in the dark not only about South and any other Recovery agents, but also about PFL’s knowledge of the Meta. He figured out on his own that something was hunting down Freelancers; no one told him that, even if they put him in a position to figure it out. This actually brings up some interesting implications for why Wash was chosen for the Recovery Force. Wash himself says that it’s because they knew he would never steal an AI for his own purposes, but you know who else would know that? Maine, because seemingly every Freelancer knew what happened to Wash:
South: “Epsilon went insane and killed itself inside his head! And from what I heard from the other recruits, he went nuts himself. Weren’t you certified Article 12 after that? Unfit for duty.”
Wash: “The people who certified me were the same people that uncertified me. Which, once they needed me, they did. Funny how the system works.”
Delta: “In either case, he is the logical choice. It is highly unlikely Wash would attempt to steal an AI for his own purposes.”
“Once they needed me”. Why would they need Wash for this job? I think it's because their agents, Recovery Force or not, were being killed for their AI.  Wash probably recovered some of them himself. They needed someone who not only wouldn’t steal an AI, but would never even consider implanting one under any circumstances. Ideally it would also be someone Maine would be hesitant to kill, someone he knew. Wash was the most likely person to survive in the Recovery Force.
In conclusion, Agent South Dakota was an agent of chaos and had she succeeded in killing Wash or if she had lived the entire plot past season 5 would have turned out differently and we were kinda robbed of her and Felix interacting.

You want to talk about interesting color theory? Let's talk about Fullmetal Alchemist, cause that shit is fascinating.
The classic is Red vs Blue, and there is a lot of that going on. First, we have the red of Ed's coat, and the blue uniforms of the Amesteis military. Obviously, we associate good things with red then, because Ed is our main character and the first several arcs establish that the military is horrible (Nina, Ishval, human experimentation, philosophers stone ect)
But. Alchemy is blue. There is a lot of blue light and sparks from the transmutation circles. And the alchemy that is produced by the Philosopher's Stone is red. The stone itself is red, and the homunculi all are associated with red with the red tattoos and red alchemy sparks.
And suddenly blue isn't so bad anymore. Because there are good soldiers, like Mustang, Hawkeye, Hughes, Armstrong, ect.
But Ed still wears that red coat.
Then there is the interesting difference in eye color between Ishvalans, who all have red eyes, and Amestris soldiers, who are depicted often with burning blue eyes in Scar's memories. So we go back to red=good and blue=bad.
It's really fascinating and I think, in the end, these back and forth color themes reflect that there is good and bad in everyone. That you shouldn't take things at face value. Not all of the soldiers are bad. But many of them are. The homunculi are seen as evil, but Greed wasn't. In the end, we are all only human, with different facets of good and evil, and we all have the chance and ability to change and grow.
The only one who didn't was the Dwarf in the Flask, who remained stuck in the flask his entire life, which made him evil, because he couldn't change, couldn't grow.

While we’re talking about conspiracy theories and ridiculous character connections by the way:
I am fully prepared to believe Katie Jensen and Agent Iowa are biologically related, and their ability of accidental vehicular destruction is genetic.

I hc wash and south (and by proxy, north) as all being ODSTs prior to pfl and one thing I really like about hcing them as such is that it adds another layer of depth to why they were all chosen to be a part of the recovery force.
ODSTs are a special forces unit within the marines, and they're generally used as force amplifiers and in high risk or sensitive operations. two such scenarios include the recovery or recapture of personal and high level assets behind enemy lines, as well as deep reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. ODSTs are also used in politically sensitive operations, which pfl was following the crash of the moi.
so basically, who better to be on the recovery force than former ODSTs who already have a background doing the kind of work that would need to be done?
this also adds to some of the tension between north and south as well imo, as while they're a great team who are capable of working together they clearly have two very different skillsets—south is not portrayed as someone who has the patience necessary for long reconnaissance missions, and part of the reason why team b failed so spectacularly is because two snipers and an intelligence operative are not a good choice for a smash and grab mission. had north been replaced with south things would've probably went way better for them, because south is actually fairly similar to wash in her "get in, get it done, get out" mentality, though where wash comes off as more methodical and is willing to take that "wait and see" approach, south throws caution to the wind and has a "we'll cross that bridge when we get there" approach.
this is probably why wash and south were (on paper at least) going to get eta and iota—south would've benefited greatly from having an ai that was afraid and anxious as it would force her to slow down and think things through more, and wash getting an ai that was happy and cheerful would force him to loosen up a bit and be less high-strung and serious.
