It's September 18th, International Red Panda Day. On this day in 2010, the Red Panda Network launched this special day to spread awareness of this endangered species. Since then, the need to protect the red panda has only increased due to climate change. These beautiful creatures reside in the Eastern Himalayas within the nations of China, India, Nepal, Myanmar, and Bhutan. Although red pandas are legally protected against poaching, deforestation, habitat destruction, fur trafficking and the illegal pet trade, law enforcement and conservation awareness are both weak in most areas.
Red pandas are much smaller than the more familiar black and white giant pandas, but they aren't related to giant pandas at all, and despite their appearance, aren't related to racoons, either. In fact, they're not related to any other species alive on the planet today. Red pandas are about the size of a housecat, weighing between 12 and 20 pounds. These adorable mammals are enormously popular throughout Asia, where they're often featured in cartoons and as team mascots. However, only about 10,000 red pandas remain in the wild now. Please help the Red Panda Network, World Wildlife Fund, National Geographic, Australia Zoo, and others spread awareness. ☮️Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

In the misty Deurali on the way to Pathivara, the first phase of superstructure construction of Center for Conservation & Sustainable Living (CCSL),  is going on full swing post lifting of the COVID-19 construction restrictions.
The lighter, single storey Interpretation Center (IC) component is taking shape with the swift erection of Bajrath timber frame structure. A rain cover has been temporarily installed to continue with the stone dressing where preparations for the heavier stone masonry work of  the Main Building component is also underway.
The IC component will soon have its first 450mm stone masonry to protect the timber frame from the weathering effects of sun and rain.
We are glad to have the construction up and running and look forward to  begin the Main Building component too.

A lot of people have asked me to post a photo of Clark the Red Panda at the SD Zoo. But every time I’ve been over visiting him, he is way up in his tree enjoying a nap. So here’s a repost from the Zoo’s account 👍 #Repost @sandiegozoo ・・・ Clark the #RedPanda is already dressed in his fall finest. The red panda, bear cat, . What a headache scientists had classifying this awesome little beast. They were thought to be relative of the raccoon, then the giant panda but now are classified as a separate family altogether. To make things MORE confusing the origin of the word ‘panda’ is actually linked back to Nepal (where these guys live) and means eater of bamboo. The red panda was actually classified before the giant panda was, hence the misguided name relation. Sadly they are endangered due to habitat loss, poaching and issues from inbreeding due to small population (see inbreeding depression) . . . #cute #animals #panda #conservation #redpandanetwork #redpandas #naturelover_gr #savetheredpanda #redpandalove #wildlife #endangeredspecies #redpandasofinstagram #Animalelite #instadaily #savingspecies #pandaeating #nature #NatureTTL #naturegrampixels #wildlifephotography #closeenoughtocare #instanaturefriends #lesserpanda #discoverwildlife #thewildlifebiologist #wildlifeonearth #wildlifeplanet #adorable #earthcapture #animalphotography https://www.instagram.com/p/CGQSALMD3Uj/?igshid=g52a63s339od

Red Panda Network presents: red panda moms! Red pandas are an endangered species and red panda infant mortality is high. Habitat loss, deforestation, human disruptions, natural predators and illegal poaching all threaten the future of red pandas. But red panda mothers do their part to ensure survival of the species, and today we celebrate their many skills and charms! Red panda mothers are industrious. Just a few days before red panda moms birth their babies, they set about building. In the wild, they build a birthing den in a hollow tree or a tree stump and line it with leaves, grass, moss, and tree branches to nest their young. When one nest doesn’t seem like enough, red panda mothers will build multiple birthing dens and move their babies from nest to nest, in order to thwart predators and ensure survival of their babies. This instinct is so strong that zookeepers breeding the species in captivity must also provide multiple nest boxes for expectant red panda mothers, to facilitate the birthing process. Red panda mothers are vigilant caretakers.Red panda mothers watch their offspring vigilantly at first, keeping them hidden inside the birthing nest for the first two to three months after birth. Even in captivity, red panda mothers are so good at keeping their babies hidden, zookeepers now use remote cameras to monitor the health of newborn red panda cubs. Red panda mothers are very attentive to their young. Though adult red pandas are by nature solitary animals, red panda mothers stay close to their offspring for roughly one year after birth, or until next mating season. Red panda mothers are great teachers. Red panda mothers teach their cubs to climb trees, hunt for food, which includes lots of fresh bamboo shoots, berries, blossoms and small mammal eggs. Red panda mothers are champions. Red panda mothers birth between one and four cubs. This number varies widely, but it’s quite common to hear of red pandas having twins, even in captive breeding programs at zoos. Red panda cubs can be a handful, quite rambunctious and playful, but red panda mothers know when it’s time to play and take their cubs out of the den to let them romp and roll freely. In short, red panda mothers rule! Looking for a thoughtful gift for mom? We have a couple of options for you! Buy her a beautiful Firefox bracelet from Creations 4 Wildlife. Use the code “MOM” and save 20% on your purchase! 40% of proceeds support our conservation programs.   Adopt a panda Your symbolic adoption of one these pandas will go directly to the conservation of red pandas and to protecting this important region. They make great gifts! From our staff in Nepal and the US, we thank you for your support! Sincerely, Red Panda Network
If you can and want, please support the red pandas!

Located at 2620m altitude, inside Deurali Bhitri Community forest near Suketar Airport, Taplejung, the Center for Conservation & Sustainable Living (CCSL) will be an education and resource center for environmental conservation, skill-building and sustainable livelihoods.
This project is a joint initiative of Red Panda Network (RPN), Himali Conservation Forum (HCF) and Deurali Bhitri Community Forest User Group (DBCFUG). With a vision to demonstrate and promote sustainable building practices within the community forests and be an exemplary center dedicated for wildlife and forest conservation, SMA was approached to design the center.
Design wise, the location and form of the proposed building components on site is guided by passive solar gain with maximum exposure to the stone masonry in mud mortar with timber bands and vertical reinforcements in the ground floor, and lighter timber structure with timber cladding and insulation in-between in the upper floor. As a part of the passive solar design, double glazed glass windows and micro-Trombe walls have also been proposed.
Apart from maximum use of local materials and craftsmanship like dressed stone masonry and timber structure with timber cladding, RCC has also been used where needed, as the floor ring beams.
Salvaging and upcycling of materials, comes back in this project, in the form of using timber planks and structural members from the existing structure on site, stones from a dilapidated public building near the site, and tarmac drum sheets as the thicker roofing material.
With a ground-breaking ceremony in May 2019, we are looking forward to the construction commencing soon. Read more about the ceremony here: https://www.redpandanetwork.org/building-a-foundation-for-red-panda-conservation-and-sustainable-living/?fbclid=IwAR1mre9sXCJx3b3VHYjq5p6tANhtQSpoSuTO3nSftMft7UcA5NwBsEj12Is
