ive been enabled so let me share some of my thoughts on how to get ur art noticed online

if u want Engagement on ur posts then i believe that its critical to make people care about ur art. the easiest way to do this is to appeal to something they already care about, like fandom, aesthetics/subculture, current events, having fun (people love humor!). a harder but perhaps more fulfilling route is to talk about ur own ocs and projects enough until people start caring about them too

theres an infinite amount of topics people care about out there so id suggest picking something u already care about urself and channel ur art energy there. trying to make art for the most popular things out there regardless own interests is an exercise in misery, id advise against it..! if im allowed to get superstitious for a moment, i do believe that even untrained eyes can tell whether a piece of art was fun to work on or a chore. and besides! if ur having fun then its easier to create more, and the more u create the more chances ull have at getting lucky and having a post seen :)

on a very related note, art is a way to communicate ideas so the quality of the idea being presented in a piece of art is paramount to how popular a post will be. what i mean by this is that technical skill isnt the primary determinant of a posts popularity. if all your posts are portraits of original characters then people will have a hard time connecting with your posts and theyll keep scrolling, even if those portraits are masterpieces! the major exception to this is probably other artists, who ive found usually have a greater appreciation for the technical side of art (we can only speculate as to why..!)

lemme finish by saying that making popular posts and being good at art are two entirely different skillsets, ive seen many incredibly skilled artists with jack shit for notes because they dont give people a reason to care about their stuff NOT TO MENTION its a huge game of luck whether a post will get seen. so dont go insane in pursuit of recognition!

(i dont want to make this post too long so ive included examples from my own art and their note counts with my analysis after the break)

hello and welcome to the extracurricular segment to this post :) i bring yall two pieces from my art blog @werewolf-artfriend:

here we have a portrait of my fursona that im still proud of and a sketch suggesting "what if sniffers (from minecraft) were the size of mountains?" (let it be noted that the sniffer sketch was posted right during the minecraft mob vote = peak interest in the subject of sniffers).

the portrait at the time of writing has a crisp 30 notes, whilst the sniffer sketch has over 2000 notes. from the same artist, on the same blog, posted only a few months apart. i believe this is a good example both of the power of a piece of art having an interesting idea at its core AND of a piece appealing to the interests of the masses

this is of course just two convenient example posts, but i have experienced fan art of popular topics getting thousands of notes a couple of times now, amidst my other furry shit that these days get around 200-300 notes in comparison

this may sound like a really long winded way of saying "fan art make the world go round" but i just want to point out the nuances that

1) it matters what u make fan art of: if a fandom is small or dormant (waiting on new canon content for example) then clearly less people will be excited about the fan art you make. dont expect 10k notes on ur post if the average recent post in the fandom gets around 200 etc etc

2) it doesnt have to be fan art! ive also had some of my bird art get thousands of notes because people simply like birds :) and this applies to ANY topic people care about! the world rly is your oyster on this one

anyway i think ive started rambling dhgdjhgd thanks if u read this far! i hope i got my point across! and if ur feeling down about ur art not being seen then just keep at it okay! keep creating and keep having fun! keep sharing ur ideas and perspectives with the world and ur audience will eventually find u! i love you!

thank you! i swear you don’t bother me, i love monologuing and i really appreciate it :] my tumblr has always been kind of a lonely one where while i remind people that i like questions, i’m very often playing alone in my corner, so it’s nice to have someone ask what i’m up to.

i’m not working on any new (chapter) fics right now though that could easily change. i scribble in my mytol doc when i have time, and i have a shealtiel doc as well, but right now i’ve recently started the second semester at my graduate program, so i’ve been trying to prioritize school and everything related to it. i expect that something will come to me in the next couple of months, though, because my inspiration isn’t dead, just pushed to the back burner most of the time. i expect obscure wanderer at the beginning/middle of march so i imagine i’ll have a huge burst of inspiration right around when it comes out and we get official translations of the lore in there (i read some fan translated summaries when it was first released, but i prefer official ones to have a good handle on things like names and such before actually engaging in any writing). basically, bit of a hiatus for focusing on school and life until the new lore comes for me. this is mainly because i don’t think i’ll have anything new to say about mlynar or toland for a bit. maybe i’ll come up with something out of nowhere tomorrow, in which case i’ll surprise myself! i would like to do another chapter fic with them, but i’m not sure where to go yet without speculating about future kazimierz plot. (on that front i’m still holding out for the announcement of playable toland. please? please i’m begging?)

blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most) kimberly i think ... she's the main character so i feel like i'm obligated to think about her most. i also draw her the most bc she has a very draw-able design (at least for me el oh el). i'm also excited to delve more into her character and how it progresses in the story

i also kind of have a crush on maeve. she's my oc and i'm kind of in love with her

scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped) either buzzer or polaris JFDHGGHJ i always draw them with Cute Intentions

scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave) idk if he's really underrated or underappreciated but atticus , though to be completely honest he isn't actually mine, i'm just stealing him for my story ... he officially belongs to my friend films but i like to think that i have joint custody over him :)

i want to reveal more about him too :0 right now he kinda just looks like this emoticon -> >:|

glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week) i don't think i even have a character like this. all of the notable characters will play at least some important role in the story. maybe juliette's mother who isn't relevant enough where i've drawn her yet (but even she's pretty relevant in the grand scheme of things lol)

poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave) when i hear "pathetic fave" i think belladonna's father ... he also hasn't been drawn yet but he's certainly Pathetic. Maybe Controversial

Hello! I just wanted to say that I binge read Where Destiny Lies yesterday, and I really, really love the fic so far! It’s exactly the kind of post-canon fic I’ve been looking for for Carmen Sandiego. You write Gray and Carmen’s relationship so well, in a way that is such a natural progression from where it ended in the show. You wrote your oc characters in a way that made it so easy to grow to care for them (especially Elena! she’s so cheeky and smart, in a way that reminds me a lot of Player and a bit of Carmen). And reading more about the dynamic that would be between Gray, Chase, and Zack was not something I knew I needed so much till I read your fic! Out of curiosity, do you also post and update the fic on ao3 too by any chance? 👀 It’s just a personal preference for fanfic sites, but it’s of course fine if you don’t! The fic is so awesome, regardless of which website it’s posted on! Anyways, I’m rambling a bit now lol, but all in all the fic really is so freaking good all around, and it has me hooked on wondering what will happen next! Thank you for writing it! 💕

i wanted to develop carmen’s feelings for gray in the most natural way possible based on the show and the ending. along with every thing else with carlotta and carmen, acme and vile. i basically put in what i thought would be the most logical? if that makes sense?

as for my oc’s it truly means a lot to know u enjoy them as much as i do! i love elena with all my heart. as well as aurora. i just… adore them! both as a couple and separately! and i really wanted people to care for them too, and it’s a relief to hear u say that 🥺💞

oh the dynamic with gray, chase and zack? tbh at first i was thinking just putting in a chase and gray dynamic because i was truly upset that we didn’t get to see them working together in season 4. (because let’s be real here for a second. they’d be a pretty… interesting team 😂🙌) but then at the last minute i decided to add zack because we missed out on his friendship with gray as well! but they really are a hilarious trio and i definitely plan on doing more with them 😂

but to answer ur question, no, i don’t post on ao3. but maybe one day? 🤷‍♀️ if i do post on ao3 i don’t think I’ll post this fic on there. instead, im just gonna post cute oneshot ideas i had in mind since… forever.

like any community with more than a few people, there have been ups and downs in the path few months. i wanted to add here as a general shout out that i have never felt so welcome and loved in a community that i originally would have thought would be more disjointed than what you might find on a forum. like, i’ve changed a lot thanks to you guys! i’ve been able to get over some of the hurdles of my social anxiety (i didnt jump over them so much as drag myself across the ground and painfully crawl over them) and i just... i feel good? i feel like people like me? there are still times where my anxiety insists i’m nothing but a useless burden, but i actually... feel like people enjoy having me around? holy shit!

i made some really cool new friends and got to know a different kind of roleplay community. im overall incredibly grateful for this wild and weird journey i’ve been on, and the journey certainly isn’t over by any means! i hope to keep seeing you guys around!

these words really arent even enough to express my gratitude. i havent been to some really dark places, but there for a while i felt like i was almost completely alone. i simply wasn’t connecting with other people like i wanted to. about 3-4 years ago i lost contact with (long story) my roleplay partners of 4 years and it wasn’t an easy thing to recover from, but i’m here now and it’s just... really good! incredible, even!

Hello There! Thank you so much for you kind words! And may I be one of the first to welcome you to the Roleplay Community on Tumblr, as well as ( more specifically?) to the Comicbook Fandom! I’ve been exactly where you are now, my friend, as a veteran of RP from other sites and venues, newly branching into this hot little mecca of writing known as Tumblr!

                                               I think you’re really going to like it here. :) 

Tumblr is an expansive universe where the possibilities are limitless, both within and beyond the fandom your character might originally hail from. It is the birthplace of some truly wonderful things, like SuperWhoLock, Batfamily Shenanigans, and Redemption from Marvel’s Civil War 2 trash. On here, all those usual rules that controlled the way you wrote your character in an RP Community or chat room no longer exist, granting you freedom to interpret them any way you wish (or multiple ways in multiple settings!). Many fandom, like the DC Comics Fandom, are populated by passionate and friendly writers who want to interact with others that feel just as strongly about the universe as they do!

But, and I’m sure you’ve heard this, RPing on Tumblr is not for the faint of heart. All those things that make this place a source of creativity and inspiration also allow for some serious issues. The site itself can be a challenge, not really designed for intuitive, flowing RP threads. The atmosphere of a fandom, usually so positive, is also constantly changing in nature, and populated heavily by free variables (i.e. people), so that there are no comfort zones for anyone involved.

On one hand, this will make you a better writer, a more conscientious interpreter of character motives, and a much stronger RPer overall. On the other hand…. well, even the best fandoms have their fair share of abuse, and no one is immune to having their feelings hurt.

Knowing all this, me and my fellow roleplayers still come online to write our hearts out everyday, because we love to write and Tumblr is hands-down one of the most prolific places for Roleplay on the internet. And I’ll tell you this, lovely anon, hard as it is, tumblr RP is also a breeding ground for wonderful and meaningful friendships that will last far longer than even the strongest OTP. That’s why I’m so pleased to heard that you are willing to give Tumblr RP a try, even if you don’t feel totally certain about how to start.

As for me, I look forward to seeing you in the this fandom community (or perhaps another!) and possibly interacting with you in the future. Thank you so much for trusting me enough with your question. I’m certainly not an expert on being a successful roleplayer (some days I make a potato look like a better talent than me!), but I hope I can offer a few small pointers that might help you get started on your way to RP glory.

First of all, regardless of whatever fandom has caught your fancy, I suggest you research the atmosphere of the RP community here on Tumblr. Use the search feature to scope out RP tags for the fandom, spot promos for characters, and stalk any RP communities currently seeking applications on the site.  All this information will give you a feel for the type of RP experience you’ll have while in that fandom., and may influence your decision to take up a certain character.

If you have a personal tumblr blog, but you want to RP a character in a fandom, then I highly recommend you make another (completely separate) tumblr blog. Sideblogs are nice, but they don’t work well when you’re following others and want to interact via asks, replies etc. Things can get very confusing, very fast, especially in the activity feed!

Many people swear by their ‘About’ pages, and that’s a good thing. Once you’ve created your character blog and start reaching out to others, most RPers on tumblr will bee-line for your ‘About’ or ‘Rules’ page as soon as they see you’ve followed them. This is a courtesy so they can know how to best approach your character and what the important details should be known when RPing with you. So, to hedge your bets in a good way, always make an About Page and include all vital details about your character on it!

Also, keep in mind, there is no wrong way to write an About Page. You can check other RPers’ blogs for examples, but just write it however most makes sense to you. As long as it gives the reader an understanding of your vision with your character, that’s what matters.

Sometimes when you’re starting out, especially if you’re playing an OC or a lesser known Canon character, you’re going to have to be the brave one that reaches out to others and asks for threads. Just posting opens and following other blogs might not get you the responses you hope for, and I don’t want that to discourage you. Don’t be afraid to (respectfully) go after the RPer you’re interested in writing with, I guarantee they’re all super nice people and they will respond favorably to your interest in them!

Depending on the type of person you are, I would recommend possibly getting an instant messenger account for your RP blogs. I know that Tumblr messenger exists, but many RPers prefer to limit access to who can message them via that interface. The most popular instant messenger choices on tumblr are Skype, Kik, and Discord. This is certainly Not a requirement, and please don’t feel pressured to get an account if you are not comfortable with talking to strangers via instant messenger. But, if you love to spazz out over your fandom, and you love to share plot ideas and headcanons, then you will find a great many fast friends in the RP fandoms on tumblr. So many writers (me included!) love to share their inspiration in this quick way, and translate it to writing on the site!

Learn the fine art of tagging posts. Tags are just about the only thing we Tumblr RPers have as a search filter on this website, and some of us follow certain tags religiously. And I don’t just mean our tumblr url, I mean anything we feel is relevant to our character. For example, I track the tags: #sunxking, #apollo, #midnighterandapollo, #midnighter, #TheAuthority, etc. I also generously tag anything I post so that I can easily find it again on my blog, or provide navigation links to it for others to find. (such as #openstarter for all my Apollo RP opens). Additionally, I feel it’s important to be careful in tagging for triggering posts. I always tag with the keyword of the triggering content, and append the triggering keyword with either ‘ts’ (for tumblr savior) or ‘tw’ for “trigger warning.” Keep in mind that if you’re tagging an original post (not a reblog) that only the first five tags are picked up by the tumblr search engine. 

Stay open minded. And I don’t just mean in regards to crossovers and alternate universes. There will be RPers that you will meet that may interpret a well-known character in a way that seems entirely contradictory to how you envision them. And you may like it… or you may not. But sometimes thinking outside of the box produces great rewards, and you never know what innovative idea might spring out of a crack conversation. Regardless, always follow the rule of thumb: Respect others and lead with kindness.

Hopefully these initial pointers will help you hit the ground running with an RP blog on tumblr! There are other things people focus on, like the right theme, or text formatting… but that stuff doesn’t really matter to me. Personally, as long as your writing content reflects your dedication to your character, I am interested in reading it!
