Scraper Bots, Fuck Off! How to "Opt Out" of Your Artistic "Data" Being Used in "Research"

How can artists protect their work from being used by art-generating "AI" bots? How can we take a stand against this continuing, as more and more programmers build their own forks and train derivative models?

Here are a few steps artists can take to keep their work from being used to train new art generators (and one step non-artists can do to help). For the reasoning and explanation behind these steps, click the Read More.

The Method:

Remove images that do not have watermarks. Take down every one of your images that can be accessed publicly and does not have a watermark. (In fact, if you have the resources, take down every image, even those with watermarks, and reupload them with new names or URLs).

Add watermarks to your images and re-upload them. Put a watermark on every image you intend to share publicly. It doesn't have to be huge and obvious, but for best results, it should have text, and if you really want to be a pain in some engineer's neck, it should be colorful. Watermark everything. From now on, any image you share publicly should have a watermark.

One host domain only. Strive for keeping your image files on only one domain—for example, tumblr.com, or your personal domain. Again, I explain below the cut.

ADVANCED: Configure your domain's robots.txt. If you have administrative access to your host domain, update your robots.txt file to contain the following: User-agent: CCBot Disallow: /

ADVANCED: Configure your meta-tags. If you have administrative access to your web pages, update your meta-tags to include the following: <meta name="robots" content="nofollow">

ADVANCED: Configure your .htaccess. If you have administrative access to your host domain, update your .htaccess file to prevent hotlinking to images. There are a few ways to achieve this, and a simple tutorial can be found here (https://www.pair.com/support/kb/block-hotlinking-with-htaccess/).

Bullying Campaigning. If you do not have administrative access to your host domain (for example, if you host on tumblr, or deviantart), ask your administrator to block CCBot in the domain's robot.txt, disable hotlinking, or take similar actions to prevent image scraping.

Aggressively pursue takedowns on image sharing sites. The best known sources of this issue are Pinterest and WeHeartIt, but especially focus on Pinterest. The image takedown form for Pinterest can be found here (https://www.pinterest.com/about/copyright/dmca-pin/), and the image takedown form for WeHeartIt can be found here (https://weheartit.com/contact/copyright).

Non-artists: do not reupload images, do not share reuploaded images (no, not even to add the source in comments), do not truck with re-uploaders. If you see an image without a watermark on image share sites like Pinterest, and it doesn't look like the artist themselves pinned it, give them a heads up so they can file a takedown.

The Reasoning:

Why watermarks? Why meta-tags? What good will any of this do?

Below the cut, I explain how these art-generation bots are "trained," and how we can use that information to prevent new bots from training on stolen art.

Those Who Can't, Program

Deep learning models capable of generating images from natural language prompts are growing in both capability and popularity. In plain English: there are bots out there that can generate art based on written (and sometimes visual) prompts. DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney are examples of art-generating "AI" already in use.

These models are trained using large-scale datasets—and I mean, large. Billions of entries large. Because teaching a learning machine requires a lot of examples.

Engineers don't make this data on their own: they acquire datasets from other organizations. Right now, there is no better dataset out there than the Internet, so that's what most engineers use to train their models.

Common Crawl (https://commoncrawl.org) is where most of them go to grab this data in a form that can be presented to a learning model. Common Crawl has been crawling the publicly-accessible web once a month since 2011, and provides archives of this data for free to anyone who requests it. Crucially, these are "text" archives—they do not contain images, but do contain urls of images and descriptions of images, including alt text.

The Common Crawl dataset is, in some form, the primary source used to train learning models, including our art generators.

Nobody Likes Watermarks

Watermarks are one of the easiest and most effective ways to remove your art from the training set.

If the model is trained using the LAION-5B dataset (https://laion.ai/blog/laion-5b/), for example, there's a good chance your art will be removed from the set to begin with if it has a watermark. LAION-5B is a filtered, image-focused version of the Common Crawl data, with NSFW and watermarked images filtered out.

Using this example provided by the LAION team, we can determine what kind of watermark will ensure your art is filtered from the dataset: partially transparent text placed over the image. Bots trained with data filtered similarly to LAION-5B will not be trained using your images if you use such a watermark.

As a bonus, if you include a watermark in your image and it somehow still makes it into a training set, the additional visual data will skew the training. It will assume any images it generates that are “inspired” by yours should include similar shapes and colors. The bot doesn’t actually understand what a watermark is and assumes it’s a natural element of the image.

404 Art Not Found

The reason we want to remove and re-upload images with new URLs is simple. The datasets these models study do not have actual images, they have the URLs pointing to images. If your image is no longer at that URL, the model can’t load your image, and any models trained with out-of-date datasets will not be able to locate your images.

However, this is only a temporary fix if you can’t prevent Common Crawler from recording the image’s new location in its monthly archiving of the internet.

Unusually Polite Thieves

The slightly more advanced tricks we can use to keep crawlers from recording the URLs of your images rely on the etiquette of crawler bots.

Firstly, keeping all your images in one domain has a chance to reduce the number of times models training from filtered datasets will reference your images in training. Crawling or scraping that results in significant negative impact on a domain’s bandwidth is bad. Like, legal action bad. The people behind the learning model generally want to avoid pissing off domain admins. So, there is a narrow chance that simply having all your images hosted on the same domain will prevent a model from trying to access all of them. It’s a bit of a stretch, though.

Something that is much more likely to see results is to plant the equivalent of “KEEP OUT” signs in your domain. Common Crawler, for all its presumption, follows bot etiquette and will obey any instructions left for it in robots.txt. Common Crawler’s bot is named CCBot. Create a robots.txt file and place it in the top-level folder of your domain. Make sure robots.txt includes User-agent: CCBot Disallow: / and CCBot will not archive your pages.

Using meta-tags in the headers of HTML pages on your domain will also help. Adding <meta name="robots" content="nofollow"> will tell any crawler robots not to follow any of the links from this page to other pages or files. If CCBot lands on your page, it won’t then discover all the other pages that page leads to.

The more advanced tactic is to disable hotlinking for your domain. When someone accesses an image hosted on your domain from somewhere other than your domain, this is called hotlinking. It’s not just a bandwidth sink, it’s also the exact process by which models are accessing your images for training.

This can be tricky: it involves creating and configuring a hidden file on your domain. The tutorial linked above in the step-by-step gives a simple look at what you can do by editing your .htaccess file, but searching “htaccess hotlink” will provide a bunch of other resources too.

Fucking Pinterest

Let’s cut to the chase: a majority of images in these training sets were scraped from Pinterest. Not DeviantArt! Not ArtStation! Literally 8%, of the billions of images collected, were from Pinterest. Image sharing social sites are the worst.

There’s no easy way to prevent people from resharing your images there, but between your new watermarks and the Pinterest takedown form, you can potentially keep ahead of it. 🫡

Now for the Downside

This won’t work on the models that already exist.

Unfortunately, we can’t untrain DALL-E or Midjourney. We can’t do anything about the data they’ve already studied. It stinks that this happened without common knowledge or forewarning, but all we can do is figure out how to move forward.

The good news is that while the current models are powerful and impressive, they still have some significant flaws. They’ll need more training if they want to live out the bizarre pie-in-the-sky, super fucking unethical dreams some of these weirdos have about “democratizing” art (which seems to mean eliminating trained artists altogether).

If we educate ourselves on how these models are trained and how the training sets are compiled, if we continue to make noise about artists’ rights to their own data, we can make sure this art-generator trend doesn’t somehow mutate into a thing that will genuinely replace living, biological artists.

hey! Imgur works pretty well as a platform for uploading content, and you can hide images from the public and also mark things as Mature. You just have to upload your image, then right click on it and do Open in New Window and use that URL to embed to Ao3 instead of the "Link" option that they give

2023 New Year Announcement!

Happy New Year everybody! I hope you all enjoyed yourself if you celebrated! I also hope that you have beautiful blessings when it comes to the year of 2023! Make it something to remember in a positive way! ♡

I am announcing a little (confusing) change to my blog this year! So, Surprise!

I am officially shifting my writing to another blog named KTH1FICS! (@kth1fics)

Due to me being a multi-content creator, I have realized over a time - and battled with debate - on how to help people find my works. As this blog (kth1) is my main bts blog for all of my works and reblogs of bts stuff, I have come to an executive decision on pulling all of my writings work to a secondary bts blog! ♡

I want it to be easier for readers, writers, and gif/gfx content creators to find my blog/works on their own without the hassle of how undoubtedly messy my blog kth1 is (as I hardly use the tag system but I'm trying to get better with it).

Over at kth1fics, I have recreated my official masterlist. Please like and share. The masterlist post on my kth1 blog will remain here because I have edited it to where it’s now linking to the new writing blog for all of my readers!

I will NOT be reuploading any of my fics to kth1 anymore, however the current existing fics with remain linked to their original post if applicable. This is where it may be confusing and I apologize.

For example, my fic The Sheets (kth) is posted on blog kth1 and will remain there. However, kth1gifs will be linking you to that post.

From here on out, as of 2023, I will be reblogging and uploading all current and future writing works and interactions for writing to kth1fics!

Wondering why am I doing this (besides what I have said above)? I got you. I know that there are some people who don’t like seeing gifs/gfxs and want to be here on tumblr for writing, and that’s ok! I also know there’s people who are here specifically for gifs/gfx and don’t like seeing writing, and that is also ok! I just want to 1) make it easier to navigate and 2) accommodate to those who strictly want to see either or. I’ve grown so much as a content creator and expanded so far, I want to keep things as simple as possible for anyone who visits my little crafty corner of bts! I am doing this for both you and me!

fun glitches that ive noticed happening to my "do you love the color of the sky HD remake" post

tumblr's blacklisting feature doesnt work. trying to blacklist my url blocks all my posts EXCEPT THIS ONE

when it's not being blazed it randomly loses the "blaze" button. whenever I see that this has happened, I have to go into the edit function and save the post again for it to show up

the new "delete comments" function doesnt work. there's a version of the post floating around were people keep reuploading the entire image series in the reblogs and nobody can get rid of them.

Moving My G/T Writing to a New Page

Hello! So a little story - when I first joined tumblr I didn't realize how it worked. At all :p I'd never used social media before in my life so I didn't realize that there was the option of side blogs - or that the first blog I'd make would be the first thing everyone would see when I interacted with them... It's not really been the biggest deal? But I've off and on felt the itch to move my g/t stuff over to a new location for easier interaction. And for more organized storage possibilities

Between that and wanting a more dedicated location for my writing here on tumblr, I present my new sideblog ✨ Also my bad but making a new blog with the HereBeGiants url has inadvertently made my past story links invalid ;-; So I'll be reuploading the original draft here. At this point it's not really canon at all - I've been reimagining the story, characters, and character dynamics a bit for a while now - but apologies for any possible inconveniences the URL swap might've caused

hello, my name is r! I understand that you're done with enhypen now, but i really hope you could give me a chance; there's nothing else i could ask for.

two years ago, i began actively using tumblr—which I've had from earlier but didn't really use—a fee months after getting into enhypen around late 2021, the dimension dilemma era. it was love at first sight for me when i saw riki in that wig; you know the one, the really cute ombre blonde wig. the first member to catch my eye was sunghoon, but once i saw dimension : dilemma Charybdis riki, it was all over for me.

as for enhypen/kpop (but i really only pay attention to enha, occasionally i spare attention for txt, skz, nct) tumblr, you, or rather your fic "a distant journey" was my first ever love. i recall reading it about the first few days i was on here, and i was completely new to kpop and/or real person fanficfion. a distant journey shattered my heart into pieces, and built me back up into life again. i cried to it and reread it at least twice. I've never once forgotten it, i even made a playlist in my phone's music player with the few songs i had just for it and named after it too.

back then I wasn't familiar with how tumblr worked, so i quickly lost the fic when you deactivated orpheyeux. I didn't remember your url. but afterwards, i read welcome and you were orochxi, i believe. I HAD NO IDEA YOU WERE THE SAME PERSON. i did leave a really long reblog if you remember! i was devastated (in the best way possible;your writing is pure magic) and i recall you saying it's not your position to say what of heeseung's fate after the ending. i saw my comments again and i cringed—so fucking embarassing and annoying, now that i look back on it. but I don't regret that i showed you how i felt about your writing, i just hope i didn't leave a negative impression. i apologize again. it was so fucking cringe, i wish i worded my overwhelming emotions better.

anyhow, i should've realised that the two most profound stories ive ever read within the first half year of my being on enhypen tumblr were written by you. they were both very impactful and left a dent in my life when everything else i read didn't even come close to leaving a touch, a stain, a scratch, a mark. nothing. i could barely even remember now what i read back then save for a few fics, two of which were yours.

i thought you were inactive, based on your oiwa blog. ive only just found you active and well now. i was sad to see that you've discontinued writing for enhypen, but i completely understand and respect your decision. it simply doesn't bring you joy anymore, and letting it go was for the best. im sorry that it happened to you, the fandom expansion that let in shitty people and changing the knitted community you were familiar and were happy with. but i can say that i am glad you are still writing, and writing so much at that too! i truly wish you well and happiness. you're awfully creative, and i admire that so much. i look up to you and your penmanship abilities.

i am sorry for taking so long, here's where i get to my point. i saw your orpheyeux archive and saw that you had several fics, a sunghoon one i believe about 47k too! all of which were gone, and my curiousity peaked. is there ever a chance you will archive or reupload elsewhere all your previously published works? i felt so overwhelmed at finding you again and upset myself over finding out that only a few of your works were still available to read. i know you've left it all behind and that the possibility of your return is still undetermined, but i wanted to have hope. that's all i want to know.

hey! i'm sorry i got around this ask very late. nice to meet you, r!

first off, i just wanted to thank you for taking the time to read my works! i'm glad that they had such a profound effect on you and that you continue to remember them for quite a long time. a distant journey was just a tribute piece to the 3.11 earthquakes because i've built a tradition to write one every year when i was still active. i wrote one for yuta in 2021, and i wrote one for riki in 2022.

ah, that's a first! usually people can tell it's me with the format or writing style, but it's a relief to know that i can manage to hide my identity very well. and don't worry! you didn't leave a bad impression at all! it was a nice thing to have a charged response to my work, given the nature of the themes i tackle. don't be embarrassed at all, really, and i'm honestly glad i was able to see an honest reaction to my work.

thank you so much for the compliment, it's really the highest form that i can receive. i don't necessarily mean to leave such an impact through the works i write, but i'm glad you think of them that way, and i'm also happy that the two works i've written are important to you. i was the same as well, where a lot of what i read don't really impact me in such a way or are remotely memorable. i think the few that i can think of off the top of my head is the really popular beomjun fic on ao3 and a few works from my vkook days and some really good satosugu aus i found on the site as well. the problem that a lot of fanfics often go through is oversaturation, and as someone with more of a literary (fiction and non-fiction) background, it's really difficult for me to get into works unless they read like novels, which tends to be a problem for a lot of oneshots i come across.

unfortunately, i think even oiwxa will be shut down for good after i migrate umazane misli onto ao3, where i'll primarily be writing from here on out. i just don't like the audience on tumblr in general, seeing as it's not necessarily a site made for longer-form works or chaptered fics. tumblr was always more geared towards headcanons, art, and drabbles even in its hay day, and if i want to rekindle my writing or find the write audience while acknowledging the problems i have with this site (plagiarism, prominence of y/n or reader insert fics, preference for college!aus or more romantic/sexual works), i think it's been long overdue for me to move to ao3 for good. i find that it's less of a fandom issue now (though i do agree the people on here are just horny), but more of a demographic issue. the stuff i write was never catered towards the audience here, and as a result, my constant disappointment didn't lie with the fandom, but how the site worked in general. and with the influx of people from twitter migrating and only liking works without reblogging or adding any comments, i think it's time for me to leave, though i did have fun here while it lasted.

once again, thank you so much for your kind words! i will reupload some of my works as i think i've written too much to let any of it go to waste, but i won't be uploading them here. they'll be on ao3, under a new fandom (either txt or zb1) and will be formatted to remove the reader. i think my biggest qualm was how restrictive reader inserts were in my creative process, and it would be nice to have some leeway and freedom with that. i know those who read on tumblr aren't the biggest fan of ships, but if you want to read my works, you're free to visit my ao3 and start there. the sunghoon fic, miracle aligner (which was originally written for doyoung) will also be on there, but it's yeonbin.

Hey, uh, I've been going through your duck comics tag for fun and it seems a lot of the links to your website have broken? I thought you'd want to check. Not sure what's wrong.

ah yikes, you're right a lot of them had the link to my old website url (which has been snatched by some loser randos who are nothing to do with me :C gross)- I've fixed those up. Some of the sections on tumblr seem to have been gobbled up by, well, tumblr, and frankly I can't be bothered reuploading that much so in all cases of confusion please refer to the doodle duck comics section on my nice new actual website here!

Feel free to change the gender, clothes, etc however you want, so long as the design is still recognizable.

You may NOT however change the skin tone, whitewash them, or change their facial features, as most if not all of my adopts are coded as POC (obviously the facial features rule doesn’t apply to chibis, as those guys have no real facial features).

Cuz all I could think of was my frikkin name, like a baby idiot with no creativity.

Too effing long. 2023 will make 10 whole years, good grief.

Why did you start your blog in the first place?

Cuz TSR was making me mad, and I liked the simblrs that were already here, and figured this was a great way to have some autonomy over how I simmed and shared content, without the peanut gallery yelling at me every stinking time I tried to upload something.

Why did you choose your icon/pfp?

It was part of a dumb silly little story I made for TSR back when Dragon Valley first came out, about how the gods blessed Sakura with a baby dragon. I reuploaded it on my simblr for the lulz. Don’t take it seriously, trust me, LOL.

Why did you choose your header?

It's from the same style of header/border I used way back in my TSR days.

Barely at all lately; this new grad school I’m in is effing annoying; their numbers are woefully low, especially after the pandemic, so they’ve got me doing way too much work on crap that I don’t even specialize in; it’s really starting to tick me off. I didn’t come here for this crap.

I have stepped on soooooo many TS4 simmers’ toes, it’s hilarious. I’ve had EA sycophants and paywall apologists cuss me out in my PMs, IMs, reblogs, etc. I don’t engage--I post my rants for posterity, not to hash crap out with people. My beef is with EA directly.

Do you have a crush on a mutual?

No, but I am deeply in love with several simblrs’ art styles and gameplay aesthetics, in TS2, 3 AND 4. Pure chef’s kiss. So inspirational; I wish I had more time to sim, and try new things!
