What your favorite Clarisse la Rue ship says about you:
(Inspired by this post and these videos)
Chris & Clarisse: You just wanted good things for Clarisse, and really, who wouldn’t?
Silena/Clarisse: Your favorite book is The Song of Achilles, and you won’t shut up about that Achilles parallel.
Percy & Clarisse: You only read fanfictions tagged “Enemies to lovers.”
Annabeth/Clarisse: You are a lesbian who wants a girlfriend who not only can kick your ass, but one who will do so upon request.
Reyna/Clarisse: This is just the same joke as Annabeth/Clarisse, but even more so and with no canon interactions.

Everyone: *writing Clareyna headcanons*
Me, two weeks late to the party:
Tumblr media
They meet after the Giant war, and Reyna is instantly taken by her, but Clarisse is ... pretty oblivious to her feelings
They train together a lot, and Clarisse is vocal about how impressive Reyna’s skills are, but they don’t ever have conversations together. They just spar together or train side-by-side.
She asks Annabeth and Piper about her, but they’ve been gone from camp for so long neither of them know much.
Finally Piper comes up to Reyna and says: “Alright, I asked around, and found out that she’s bi, single, but newly single, like last few months or something, so that might be an advantage or disadvantage. No word on if she’s into you or not, but you’re hot, so I wouldn’t worry about that too much.
One day, after a spar together, Clarisse smiles at her, and compliments her, and Reyna tries to maintain her scary cool-girl demeanor as best she can. But she walks back to the bleachers grinning wide.
Drew slides up next to her. “You’re never going to get her attention this way,” Drew tells her.
“What? How would you know that?”
“I know things. She fights people all the time. People who fight her aren’t her type."
Reyna crossed her arms, defensive. “How can people who fight not be her type. What? Are you suggesting that I change who I am?”
“Gods, no,” Drew said. “I’m a fan of Grease, but those Sandra Dee makeovers are never sustainable.” She moved in closer. “You do need to find time with her away from training, though.”
“Why can’t I just go up to her and ask her out?”
Drew shook her head. “Because any emotions besides, like, blood rage, terrify her. She’s like a woodland creature. You’ve gotta take this slow.”
“Should I even be listening to you? Piper doesn’t like you every much.”
“Piper’s right not to like me, I’m a bitch. But I’m not a liar." Drew scanned the arena looking for something for Reyna and Clarisse to do together. She spotted Coach Hedge at the end of the arena. “That’s it!” She said. “Ask her if you can help babysit the baby goat!”
And thats how they both end up baby sitting baby Chuck together.
They’ve got two hours after Chuck goes to sleep before Coach Hedge gets back, so they just sit and talk.
Reyna hates to admit it, but Drew was right. Outside of the arena, Clarisse is a lot calmer; she makes jokes, she smiled a lot easier, she talks more openly. Neither of them have to stress about leading people, and they can just relax.
And Reyna’s crush just gets worse by the hour.
Finally, by the end of the night, when they’re walking back to the cabins from the Big House, Reyna throws caution to the wind, and just decides to ask her out.
Despite Reyna having flirted nonstop for days, Clarisse looks surprised.
“Really?”
“Yeah, really.”
Clarisse smiled and looked at the ground as they walked back. “Sure, sounds great. You know where to find me.”
Reyna thought about kissing her goodnight, but shied away from it. She was never great when it came to physical intimacy; she was much better with emotional intimacy.
Instead, they just waved goodnight to each other as Clarisse jogged back to her cabin.

Basically, my whole point is that The Heroes of Olympus series is, at its core, an exploration of how Camp Half Blood and Camp Jupiter and their respective gods differ. RR sets up two focal points for exploring this difference: the children of the Big Three and the children of war gods. This allows him to explore the differences in leadership, power, and military strategy.
We’ve got two pairs of half Greek, half Roman siblings (Jason and Thalia, Nico and Hazel), as well as the parallels between Jason and Percy as camp leaders to explore how the Big Three are different (both in their powers and their levels of respect) between the two cultures.
We also have the Reyna v. Annabeth parallels, which are there to explore the differences between Bellona and Athena as goddesses of strategy. We also have Frank, the son of Mars, there to explore the differences between Ares and Mars.
All of these characters allow him to explore the broader philosophical and cultural approaches to the gods, strategy, the military, and heroism.
Thus, the almost complete absence of Clarisse from this series is a major thematic and plot oversight. She should have had a larger part, even if she wasn’t one of the seven (Reyna wasn’t one of the seven.)
Shit, even Piper and Leo, who aren’t war children or Big Three kids, are the children of Aphrodite and Hephaestus. You know, the couple whose marriage has been disrupted by Ares.
And Coach Hedge was Clarisse’s protecter! So where is she?
It’s like Rick wanted her to have a more major role when we finally got back to camp, but then he pulled a Benioff and Weiss and just “kind of forgot” that he wanted to do that.

PJO/HoO Characters as Bad Jokes
Percy: Why do seagulls live by the sea? Because if they lived by the bay they'd be bagels.
Annabeth: An American couple was visiting the Soviet Union in the 1960s, and as they were walking around the wife said, "Honey, I think it's snowing." Her husband said, "No, dear, I think it's raining." To settle their debate, they went over to a Soviet guard. The man introduced himself, and the guard told them his name was Rudolf. The husband asked Rudolf if it was snowing or raining, and the guard told him "It's raining." So the husband turns to his wife and says: "See, Rudolf the red knows rain, dear."
Grover: What do Christmas and a cat in the desert have in common? Sandy Claws.
Thalia: A lot of people were shocked when they found I wasn't a good electrician.
Nico: What do you call a fake noodle? An im-pasta!
Clarisse: Two fish are in a tank, and one fish says to the other fish: "Do you know how to drive this thing?"
Luke: What do you call a snarky criminal going down the stairs? A condescending con descending.
Piper: This girl said she knew me from the vegetarian club, but I'm pretty sure I've never seen herbivore.
Jason: These two Crimean War Vets were sitting in a bar swapping old war stories, and one general says: "So there I was, down in the bush, and right in front of me was this massive tiger. The tiger lunged at me and went ROAR, and I shit myself." And the other general said: "Well of course you did old chap, it was a massive tiger." And the first general said, "No, just now when I went ROAR"
Leo: How do you kill an elephant? With an elephant gun. How do you kill a red elephant? With a red elephant gun. How do you kill a blue elephant? You choke it until it's blue and then you shoot it with a red elephant gun. How do you kill a green elephant? You don't, because there's no such thing as a green elephant.
Frank: Why did the cowboy get a wiener dog? Because somebody told him to get a long little doggy.
Hazel: What did the shy pebble wish? Just that she was a little boulder.
Reyna: A Roman walks into a bar, holds up two fingers, and says: "Five beers please."
Will: This ancient Greek playwright got a rip in his tunic, so he brought it to his tailor, and his tailor said: "Euripides?" and the playwright said, "Yeah, Eumenides?"

I’m still just not sure why Reyna joined the hunt? This has nothing to do with her sexual or romantic identity, I just genuinely don’t understand what her motivation was.

That’s an interesting headcanon. I think for sure some of that moment does come down to Jason’s bias and Percy’s amnesia, but I do think that lets that scene off the hook too easily. (Also sorry that I’ve completely just used your reply as a jumping off point to further air my grievances of Blood of Olympus. This is not a personal attack; it’s just me spending too much time writing about a book that I hate).
My problem with the scene is most clearly laid out by comparing it to the strategy scene in The Last Olympian. (I was going to post pictures, but they’re too big and won’t rotate, so sorry about that).
Here, we see that Percy is a good strategist, even when he’s not relying on pre-set Camp strategies like in the Sea of Monsters. It doesn’t take him long to set this strategy, and it’s is (broadly) effective for the duration of the war. Like New York City, Camp Half Blood is a place Percy knows very well and cares about deeply. Based on The Last Olympian, it shouldn’t take him long to set a battle strategy in motion.
Also, Annabeth, the character known for her planning and strategy, is there. She easily could have taken the lead of camp if Percy didn’t know exactly what to do. If Percy was suffering from amnesia or was otherwise overwhelmed, it shouldn’t have taken long for Annabeth to jump in as the other leader (which she is and always has been. Annabeth commands a massive amount of respect from CHB). Let her stand in contrast to Reyna as they have been contrasted the entire time.
And the Greeks are literally described as just running headfirst into the fight with no organization. I agree with you that some of that is probably Jason’s bias, but we’ve never seen the Greeks be so disorganized, nor have we ever seen them so completely without strategy. We’ve never even really seen them without strategy at all. So why “Let’s go fight stuff?” Annabeth couldn’t have yelled an attack plan (she didn’t have amnesia), Percy couldn’t have organized them quickly? Someone else at camp hadn’t already prepared all of them with a strategy (clearly, someone had, or else Lou Ellen, Cecil, and Will wouldn’t have been on Half Blood Hill)?
“But the battle is here,” you might say, “there wasn’t time.”
That might be true (I only say “might” because I refuse to read more of Blood of Olympus than I absolutely have to). However, you know is at camp? Who has been at camp the entire time while the 7 were questing? Who is a senior camper (probably the oldest camper), is a daughter of a war good, has completed multiple quests, fought in a war already, and received the blessing of Ares? CLARISSE!
Now, this might just be my bias showing, but she has been at camp the entire time. It is very likely that she would have been put in charge of the army, because she is capable. Ares, as a cabin and god, gets shit on a lot throughout the series, and allowing Clarisse to appear as a strong and capable leader would have turned that on its head (not that I expected RR to ever do that, considering he was the one who made the decision to treat Ares that way in the first place).
Calrisse understands war! Remember that scene in the Battle of the Labyrinth where she says “Practice time is over. From now on, it’s for real.” And it’s somber and unsettling, because we know that she understands war and all of its tragedy. She is rude, violent, and good at killing, but she is also thoughtful, intelligent, and she understands exactly what war is and what it means. An older, post-The Last Olympian Clarisse leading camp to war would have been such an interesting development of her character, and it would have allowed us to see the full strength of the Greeks (particularly Ares, though Clarisse, and Athena [who the Romans don’t respect] through Annabeth and the other children of Athena still at camp).
This is also a series where children of war gods are at the forefront, so it seems almost like a complete oversight that Clarisse is hardly there at all, in this battle or the series as a whole (I’ve seen some headcanons that she should have been one of the seven, and that’s just *chef’s kiss*). We have Reyna (the daughter of the Roman Athena, essentially) and Frank (son of Mars) on one side, and Annabeth on the other. So why not include Clarisse more in the CHB battle scenes to complete the parallels? Why not have her there as the de facto leader of camp in the absence of Percy and Annabeth?
“Oh, but camp might be more likely to rally behind Percy. He’s the hero of mythological proportions!”
Putting aside that many campers fighting this war probably don’t know Percy (a lot of new campers arrived after the Titan War, and Percy has been gone for that whole year), that might be very true. However, by not acknowledging that other campers have done the strategizing, preparing, and planning for the war not only undermines the strength of the Greeks, it also robs us of this potential moment:
Percy goes to Clarisse and asks her what the plan is, showing us 1) a familiar character talking to another familiar character, 2) shows that he respects her as a leader and friend (which is familiar and also unfamiliar, because their relationship has been so layered and complicated over the years). 3) Would allow her to explain what the plan is, and then hand leadership to Percy because she knows he’s the best one to lead this, because camp will follow him, showing that she has a good strategic mind as well, and she respects him in return.
This series was so much about children of war gods - Annabeth, Reyna, and Frank. We have two other daughters of war gods, and a son of Mars who has received his father’s blessing. There was so much room there for Clarisse to come forward in this final battle. And, no she hasn’t been a huge part of the narrative thus far in the novels, but neither has Will Solace. Clarisse is already more familiar to us that he is, so where is she? We know her, we know how strong she is, and how much she cares for her soldiers and her camp. So where was she?
Why was the strength, strategy, and organization of the Greeks reduced to “Let’s go fight stuff!” When we know that’s not how they operate, based on what we’ve read in The Sea of Monsters, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian.
