✿ * 𓈀 synopsis :: Being Park Jimin's younger sister comes with pros and cons. Cons, Park Y/N will never experience a true day of peace in her life. Pros, they were able to became friend's with other idol's sisters, and even though they became friends because of their brothers, they stayed friends because they all fit together, like pieces of a puzzle. Only thing? Don't fall for anyone's brother. Easy enough, until Y/N exposes her two year crush on Nishimura Konon's brother, Nishimura Riki. Not just to Konon though, half the world.

[ID: An edit of the Parmigianino painting Cupid Making His Bow, showing a figure from the back, mid-buttcrack up, leaning over, braced against an unfinished bow. They are looking over their shoulder and have the head and tail of Garfield in cartoony contrast to the late Renaissance painting style of the body and wings. The figure is also Garfield orange. A script tattoo on one buttcheeck reads "February 2024." /end ID]
Listen, last year I did two hours and twenty-eight minutes and when I hit two hours and fourteen minutes this year I was like "whatever, print it." Also I liked how they hung together and some life stuff kind of meant that what I needed was a very loopable couple hours, not a curated several hours. I think every time I hear a Donavan song I go "this is my favourite" but it's more like "this is my favourite right now." More love and relationship type songs because you can't get away from that in music tbh, but also it's a fun thing to theme around.
Related media to some of the songs:
"Oh Snap" has some muddy origins, like any phrase. Wild in this article to see that as of this 2009 article it had worn its ironic welcome.
'Heartbeat' by Riggs is from Heavy Metal (1981), well not *from* the movie, but was in the movie, which is so specifically of its genre and era and also so specifically for me, who ended up with a sizable Loc-Nar tattoo. I think you can gauge pretty quick if a deeply '80s metal animated movie is for you and it conveniently is available on Archive.
It was a wet month here, hence all the rain songs, I hate linking to Insta, but latimes.404 had a nice little rundown of stats. The 1933 record mentioned is why we have such monster flood abatement where we live. I can’t remember which Raymond Chandler story it is but one scene takes place in a house that had been swept down a hill by a community ruining flood and THATS the record mentioned in the video. That’s why every four way stop is crossed with gutters that bottom out your car.
Bump of Chicken! 'Sleep Walking Orchestra' slaps. I am a Delicious In Dungeon/Dungeon Meshi fan (vol 13 and 14 on preorder, bb!), it's as specific as Heavy Metal, so I guess decide if you want a cooking manga/anime that is also very intense, and monster-nerdy. (and also kind of horny). Anyway, the official video is a more all-ages delight.
Anyway here's a link to February's playlist on Spotify, with the track list below the cut.
And embedded, if you like that:

i just wanna say that yes the budget was in hell like they spent too much on bite me im crying but holy coww short as hell song but they've changed their tone soo much the way they've embraced their vocal potential is gorgeous i wish i knew enough about music to explain it but heeseun'g part before the chorus is cocaine they tell that guy to go ape in the studio and he does and jay's pre chorus part.. his voice is so golden boy coded, he's good at falsetto and reaching higher pitches but heeseung's octave reach. in the english version his part before the second chorus he sang it like he was a 5sos singer. you can tell he's enjoying this album so much but SUNGHOON'S I WOULD GIVE UP HEAVEN IF I HAD TO? what if people cried? i have trouble deciphering sunghoon's voice because it's so gentle and he doesn't use any distinct sound or pronunciation like the others but i stood like the standing emoji during his eng verse. "i cant speak english", says sunghoon. all men do is LIE because that verse spoke to my HEART! sorry this is so long im efherf i love you alice im so happy
the budget still makes me upset knowing how much of a cinematic masterpiece that teaser was 😔 but right!!! i am soooo so impressed with the song itself so i think that's why the mv felt all the more disappointing :( but i've just been listening to it on spotify so it's been so enjoyable like their voices sound amazing for this song and the lyrics flow so well in the english version !! (do not get me started on sunghoon i will THROW UP) but im really glad enha is experimenting with different styles bc this really showed how well rounded their discography is :') i feel like they can make any song sound good lowkey...... and i feel like riki rlly shone this era !! like the michael jackson inspiration was FOR him <33 HAHAH DONT APOLOGIZE I UNDERSTAND I AM GOING THRU SWEET VENOM WITHDRAWALS TOO now that spotify released the lyrics too i've been going crazy reading them,,

emi ! can u do this game: ship ur moots w/ an idol & give anecdote (can b platonic or assign idols as siblings to ur moots)
hi anon!! so, to quote my slayer sai "i am not in my cupid era currently" so i won't be shipping my moots with idols, but i will assign them idol siblings!!
Tumblr media
@jungwonize - off the bat, i see you and riki as siblings? super chaotic too, like he definitely puts your foot in a bowl on warm water in the middle of the night and he left like a teaspoon of orange juice in the bottle and left it in the fridge, but he'd be super overprotective of you and would tell his friends of like "yo thats my sibling leave him alone😒"
@soobinyz - REI!!!! i was thinking about this for a minute but ryujin as your older sister,, and shes like very invested in your life. like she drive you places and treat you to stuff just to slip into the conversation, "so i saw you talking to __ the other day-"
@jangwonie - omg fae 💕 leeseo or beomgyu! you are leeseo would be like super sweet but chaotic twins and you'd be the twin who covers for leeseo's mischief. also beomgyu as your okder brother who's like rodrick but way nicer,, and your friends are always asking about him
@seungstarss - i immediately thought of soobin or felix as your older brother(s)!! super shy and sweet but super intimidating when needed. definitely the type to text you whenever you go out to make sure your safe and you'd have to give him updates so he doesnt worry.
@sh1mzu - sunghoon or hyunjin!! very funny and chaotic but also cold blooded and straight faced. does not want to know about your personal life at all but is still there for you when needed
@maiverie - hi mai fellow infp🤩 SO FOR YOU I WOULD SAY CHAEYOUNG AND CHAERYOUNG AND NAYEON AND JENNIE- all sisters🤪 they would definitely baby you a bit, and spoil you tons, and would bond with you in their own ways, like i see chaeryoung dancing with you in the kitchen while cooking and nayeon gifting you sweets and jellies!
@shoyotime - cael omg hi👋🏾 okay so stick with me, im thinking the huening siblings! yall would get into so many play fights and trouble in general! obviously kai's a super supportive older brother and bahiyyih and lea supportive sisters, but i feel like you'd be closer to bahiyyih? she's so kind and has great style, but i also feel like she'd be a great cook! so she would make youlike muffins and sweets and stuff like that
@gfksn - MARIII WHATS UP? alright so boom definitely jake and bangchan - yeah its cuz they're both australian, and?🤨/j no but jake gives such good vibes especially with kids so i feel like he'd be a great brother and he would be so chaotic bit he would do things like drive you whereever you need to go and buy you guys coffee and chan would definitely be a bit more distant but would love to gift you gifts like necklaces and stuff and everyone in the family had one
@bigtoewinwin - SHA AHH OKAY SO SUNOO. SUNOO AND LIZ IDK HY BUT I SEE IT SO CLEARLY- liz is the super sweet older sister and shes so kind and everyone loves her and she always wants to spend tume with you and have everything youve ever given her since she was like 14 and sunoo is the equally sweet but menace brother who loves playing games and causing chaos,, and would definitely be somewhat invested in your love life
Tumblr media
hah this definitely didnt take several days👺 ANYWYAS ART IN THEIR MOOT GAME ERA LOVE THAT FOR ME

Xenoblade Definitive Nonspoiler Review (Main)
I've heard high opinions of this game, in fact, I don't think I've heard a bad review for this one specifically, maybe Xenoblade X or 2 but not this one. Chuggaconroy even said that it was his favorite game. I decided I wasn't going to buy it on Wii, it was rare anyway, but I started watching a playthrough of it but didn't make it much past the beginning. Shulk got in smash and now there's a definitive edition on Switch so hey, let's give it a go.
Tumblr media
Characters first, as I expected, the Nopons are kind of annoying, I barely ever used Riki though. Who is best girl? Well for the main female characters, we have Fiora, Sharla, and Melia. I'm a bit torn between the three because they all offer something different.
I was team Fiora from the start, I just assumed that's how it went, I had previsions to like her but when it came down to it, there wasn't a whole lot to her at first. Then things happened and I have to say, her background with Shulk makes her a strong contender. She is a lot like him in more ways than one.
So then came Melia, who I instantly really liked, and tried to keep pampered throughout my playthrough. There isn't a whole lot I can say about her without spoiling though.
Sharla is the one that I know I don't ship with Shulk. She's a few years older anyway and she'd fit with Reyn more, they push that pretty hard. But she has the best character development and is probably the most interesting, 9 times out of 10, I had her in my party because for one, she's a sniper and I love snipers and she can reach birds that a sword or even the Monado can't normally reach. And two, she's a healer.
So we have best relationship, best character, and best story. I'm leaning towards Melia as best girl overall, even if I don't know who belongs with Shulk.
As for other characters, I was afraid Dunban would get sidelined and he kind of did, he’s only there because (spoiler) is there, then he gets told certain things by the ending and it’s like it barely even fazes him, sure he had that one moment where he was kind of broken up but other than that...Now Reyn is kind of the best, he’s ironically hilarious and the one that brings the team together, even if he does make mistakes sometimes and he’s easy to make fun of, he was a decent addition. And I expected Shulk to be my favorite yet I couldn’t help but feel he wasn’t, his quirk is that he’s kind of milquetoast but he’s learning not to be, I like that aspect but I just like everybody else’s character more.
Story
I’m making this review because I’m challenging the game. I started feeling like it was all too familiar but then I realized Sword Art Online definitely took a few notes for Alicization. The dialogue is pretty campy too. It’s not clear whether Shulk SEES these visions the same as what we’re seeing as well as hearing them but if he does then he’s really oblivious. “What could this mean?” Gee uh, maybe someone crying for help?! If he was just hearing it though, I could totally understand except he talks about "seeing" things so I assume he knows.
It's ironic, I started this because I thought the story was supposed to be good and I thought the gameplay was just something you had to accept. I ended up staying for the gameplay and thinking the story is kind of outlandish, I'm not sure where the whole Zanza thing came from and when I looked it up when I was thinking about buying this game, it didn't show that side of the story, because it's a spoiler. Yeah it’s hinted at throughout but I don’t care, it’s not my thing at all. I won't talk about it but just know that it's questionable, I thought I got rid of it with Persona 5. I wasn't going to complain about the cutscenes because Kingdom Hearts has long cutscenes but these are especially sluggish, and over nothing, Shulk sometimes just stands there and "mmph"s and "urgh"s looking at the Monado and then you enter a new area and you walk down a ramp and immediately comes another cutscene. I would start doing something else while some of the cutscenes were playing because they were so slow. Don't tell me that I shouldn't judge the story that way because first off, if it doesn't engage me enough to stay there then it's not my kind of thing and second, I only started doing that towards the end and still understood everything. It should have just ended when (to put it in non-spoiler terms) Shulk sat on the Golden Mechon. I think this game is more for people who were already fans anyway though.
As for the graphics, I’m a fan of these designs, it reminds me of a Kingdom Hearts style, kind of cartoonish and vibrant and they aren’t too realistic. Why is that? Because apparently Tetsuya Nomura himself put a little bit of influence in there. Looking up a few things here and there, I can tell that it’s definitely a glow-up over the original especially the character models, I can actually tell their faces apart. The original actually reminds me of the FF12 era. I see some people saying that it’s still not great because of the resolution but as long as it has style then it’s fine with me, I couldn't see myself playing any other version after even glancing at the improvement of these designs.
Tumblr media
You could call this a gameplay thing but it fits here since it's design. I really really love this one. So, with a lot of RPGs, there are equipable items, weapons, and gear but most of the time, it’s just for stats, they don’t actually show up. With this game, they do! You can customize your character essentially and it keeps it even during cutscenes. As if that wasn't good enough right? So if you just want to have the cutscenes look good but also have a style going on, there is a section to put on the gear that you want visible while also have the same attributes of the other gear you have “equipped” so no worries. The only gripe with it is that I really liked the short sleeved outfit in the trailers "The Monado style" but you know what? You have to play the epilogue to get it, "Future Connected" which means after the main story. I’m not doing that because I ended up being disappointed with the main game, why bother? I looked up some FC stuff and it seems just as messy, like they wanted to add to the ending of the game but it doesn’t add all that much from what I see. Not in terms of length but actual lore and story.
Now do I recommend this game? Ho ho, people are gonna be mad but no. Maybe I don’t understand it, but I played the game, you tell me why it’s supposedly good.

XCDE ask meme: 6, 7, 9, 10, 16, 24, 36, 40, 41!
Ok, I’m sticking this under spoilers as I get a touch spoilery.
6: Favorite location? Valak Mountain at night, there’s just something about the scenery and the lights. Makna Forest is cool too.
7: Least favorite location? Can’t really say I have a real least favourite… (I know, total cop out, sorry.)
9: Favorite part of the story? Finding Fiora on the Fallen Arm was cute. :) The immediate aftermath of the Jade Face fight was nice in it’s own way. (Not the part where Gadolt died, because that sucked but before that.)
10: Least favorite part of the story? The first time where I was fighting the Cellar Bugworm in Tephra Cave because I thought I needed to for the story and repeatedly getting my level 14 ass handed to me by a level 10 enemy. (I didn’t understand Uniques at the time…)
16: Favorite costume? Besides the Ecru/Beach and Resort Styles because I’m a silly billy like that or default colours:
Shulk: Monado Style II (the black one)
Reyn: Colony Type II (blue one) or Middle Type III (white one)
Fiora: Colony Type II (the brown one) or Makna Type I (resembles her beta outfit)
Dunban: Besides his default, Colony Type II or III (the green or blue/purple ones)
Sharla: Besides her default, Colony 6 Era (the different looking Colony Type I, unless I’ve messed up the not default thing here...) or Colony Type III (the pink one) (As much as I do like looking at her in various armours, I am starting to question why there’s no ‘modest’ options... :\ )
Melia: Colony Type II (Red and black one) or Titan Type III (the blue one) (How the hell does she manage to make the heavier armours look good while everyone else looks stupid?)
Riki: Eryth Type I (white and blue)
Seven: Ether Cowling I or II (red or black ones)
Kino: Besides the default, Intrepid Style II (darker blue sides)
Nene: You know what, all Nene’s styles are cute. Modern Style II just edges out the others even though Modern Style III has more blue... (yes, blue’s my colour if you didn’t guess by now. :D )
24: Favorite ship? ;) Reyn/Sharla/Gadolt, Dunban/Dickson, Melia/Fiora, Shulk/Fiora, Shulk/Reyn and a lot more I can’t think of off the top of my head.
36: Least favorite game mechanic? Enemies with spike damage. (Thankfully haven’t made it that far myself yet but watching a friend’s playthrough they kept screwing him over.)
40: Feelings about Future Connected? I haven’t played it yet but I’ve heard good things so once I get off my butt and finish the main game, I look forward to trying Future Connected.
41: How did you come to know Xenoblade Chronicles? Super Smash Bros. 4 adding Shulk as a playable character but I didn’t play the game until a streamer I watch on Twitch did a play though of the original game. (I didn’t get too far as I got side tracked by a million things the Definitive Edition was announced so I waited for that.)

I’m a British student (so forgive my constant need to spell words with a ‘u’ like above!) and I’ve been playing voltage games since I discovered My Forged Wedding on the Appstore in 2013. Things went downhill from there and now I’m so obsessed with otome games that a good quarter of my monthly wage gets spent on them (who can relate?) I’m aware everyone has a different role-play style, so I like to adapt my own to suit my partner in order to make them more comfortable. I really hope we can be friends and just have fun. Don’t be afraid to have a chat! :)”
Availability: I can’t give specific hours as my shifts at work vary but I actively use tumblr every day and I will definitely be available to role-play at the very least 3 days a week (although it will probably be much more than that!) Ask time! How would your character(s) react to…
A small family run farm? Can they take the smell of the animals? How do the animals react to them? Would they help out with the farm duties, or try to get out of there?
and/or
An art gallery with masterpieces from every era, culture and genre? Do they prefer the bright pops of colours and abstract shapes, or more realistic depictions of still life, people, or places?
I'll go ahead and answer the first for Riki, Feng, and Tlalli (Truffula) and the second for Arty and Catalina (Immortal Coil)
The odds of them running across a farm on their travels is honestly incredibly likely, and for the sake of the question I'm gonna assume it's after a full day's travels. I think they'd all vote to approach and ask for space to rest (I think Feng would probably opt to taking the barn as the option if the family's hesitant on letting them stay in the house, which they might be if they notice Feng's Myrcite spots), and in exchange they'd all try and do some of the farm work. Tlalli is probably the least into the work and tries to figure out ways to get it done faster with magic, though ironically animals would probably take to them better because they don't smell as weird with corruption and divinity.
For the galley I could see Arty and Catalina treating it as a kind of date. Arty definitely enjoys the bright and abstracts and might snap pictures and doodles to take inspiration from for her shop online and to see if she can design a color palette for Catalina's makeup shop, and Catalina probably enjoys the realistic depictions of the sea that remind her of home and any romantic style portraits just for the vibes.

REVIEW | "River City Girls Zero" | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
Tumblr media
WayForward’s River City Girls was a neat take on the classic Kunio-kun series. Showcasing the happenings of the River City Ransom world from the perspective of the girlfriends was something that should’ve happened years ago. Funny enough, such an occurrence did happen back in 1994; the English-speaking world just wasn’t fortunate enough to experience it. Now nearly thirty years later, the once-titled Shin Nekketsu Koha: Kunio-tachi no Banka has finally arrived in the form of River City Girls Zero.
The game begins with Kyoko showing Misako a video game about their first adventure together. First turned-off by the old graphics, Misako becomes surprised by how much fun she’s having playing the lost game. But fearing that new gamers would be turned off by the old style, the two friends decide that it needs some cut-scenes, new songs, and possibly a more revamped translation. From there, the real game begins!
Tumblr media
River City Girls Zero has Kunio and Riki thrown in jail for something they didn’t do. After breaking out of prison, they reunite with Kyoko and Misako to take down a gang of thugs who’ve taken over their high schools and stomping grounds. But on the way there, Kunio seeks to find the person who framed him and Riki, which leads him all the way to the top of the food chain. From the school halls to even the pachinko parlor, Kunio, Riki, Kyoko, and Misako leave a trail of unconscious bodies on their quest for the truth!
As the game is a port of a Super Famicom game, the gameplay itself isn’t as outstanding as the main River City Girls. With that being said, even with that era’s limitations, there’s surprisingly a lot of depth, personality, and even mechanics that make it almost feel like a side-scroller made today. All four characters can be played and switched out anytime during gameplay, giving gamers the experience of how each person handles their enemies. Best of all, none of them — even Kyoko and Misako — have any weird flaws or limitations.

5 Best Action Movies of All Time
All you need to make a movie, a wise French man once said, is a girl and a gun. It helps, of course, if you throw in a few explosions, several car chases, some knockdown mano a mano fistfights, a smattering of kung fu, and any number of swordfights as well. Action has been a part of the movies since the days of Keystone Kops and mustache-twirling villains tying up heroines on railroads tracks; you could even argue that the Lumiere brothers’ short of a train pulling into the station, which allegedly caused audiences to scream and flee the room, was the world’s first example of an action movie. The holy trinity of cinema, i.e. thrills, chills, and spills, has been a main attraction of the medium for decades. And once the Age of the Blockbuster kicks into gear in the early 1980s, you couldn’t throw a rock at a multiplex without hitting something that hyped up the “motion” into motion pictures.
'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' (2015)
You don’t need to be familiar with the original 1960s spy show — the one where Robert Vaughn and David McCallum got into Bond-lite adventures (though to be fair, Ian Fleming was a creative consultant for the series) — to dig Guy Ritchie’s big-screen adaptation, which channels the era’s espionage-a-go-go style while adding a dash of Cold War grit. Henry Cavill is Napoleon Solo, the C.I.A.’s suavest agent; a pre-scandal Armie Hammer as Ilya Kuryakin, his KGB counterpart. They’re both fighting over who gets to bring Alicia Vikander, as well as her scientist dad’s plans, back to their respective bosses. Eventually, the three of them team up to fight a common enemy. Taking a break from his Sherlock Holmes and King Arthur franchises, Guy Ritchie reminds you that he can put together some mean fights scenes and chase scenes — several, in fact — and make the sight of Cavill casually eating a sandwich before driving a cargo truck off a ramp and landing on top of a boat seem like the most natural thing in the world.
'Escape From New York' (1981)
When the President’s plane goes down behind the walls of the nation’s most dangerous, maximum-security penal colony — a.k.a. the island of Manhattan circa 1997 — there is only one person you send in to rescue the leader of the free world: former Special Forces soldier, current federal prisoner and all-around badass Snake Plissken. John Carpenter’s gritty, dystopian B movie didn’t just give the world a truly unique antihero in Kurt Russell’s reluctant savior. (No one has ever rocked an eyepatch onscreen better. No one.) The writer-director also gifted moviegoers with a funhouse version of Horror City as a playground of the damned, perfect for shoot-outs with punk crazies and chase scenes across mine-laden bridges. And while everyone from Adrienne Barbeau’s magnum-wielding moll to Isaac Hayes’ A-No. 1 criminal, The Duke, to Carpenter’s synthy score contribute to this futuristic free-for-all, it’s Russell who makes this man-on-a-mission flick feel like it’s constantly on the move.
'Dead or Alive (1999)
You might accuse Takashi Miike’s yakuza flick of being a little derivative in the narrative department: A cop (Sho Aikawa) is determined to take down a mobster (Riki Takeuchi) by any means necessary. No one can say that the prolific Japanese filmmaker doesn’t present this old chestnut of a story with a maximum amount of panache and a 200 beats-per-minute pace: It opens with a power chord-driven montage of falling bodies, superhuman drug binges, arterial spray, and flying bullets. Even after Miike takes his finger off the puree button, it’s still gonzo, go-for-broke version of a typical two-sides-of-the-same-coin movie. And as for the ending? Let’s just say it’s one of the greatest cinematic exit strategies ever, and one which takes the entire action-film genre to its logical endgame.
'The Rock' (1996)
Welcome…to the Rock. The best Michael Bay movie by a huge margin (all apologies, Armageddon fans) turns Alcatraz into the sight of a hostage situation, with a gung-ho rogue general (Ed Harris) threatening to reduce the Bay Area to rubble. To neutralize the situation, the FBI enlists the only man to ever successfully escape the floating prison — and damned if it isn’t Bond 1.0 himself, Sean Connery. It’s one of the few of the director’s movies to put his signature “Bayhem” to good use, especially when it comes to blowing up San Francisco landmarks and staging some sly cat-and-mouse work within the tourist site. And the secret ingredient? That’d be Nicolas Cage, playing a nerdy biochemist and finding the perfect middle ground between his early-career goofball eccentrics and his mid-career men of action.
'Taken' (2008)
The movie that officially kicks off the era of Liam Neeson: Greatest AARP-Age Action Hero Ever, starts innocently enough: A doting, overly protective dad tries to repair the relationship with his teenage daughter after years of being an absentee father. She wants to go to Paris with her best friend for the summer. He’s worried that something will happen to his baby girl. Naturally, she is kidnapped by Albanian sex traffickers within 12 hours of landing in the City of Light. Only her Pops used to be a “preventer” for U.S. intelligence agencies, see, and by the time Neeson delivers his justifiably famous “what I do have are a very particular set of skills” speech, you get the sense that he is not your ordinary helicopter parent. The fact that we get to those skills amply demonstrated over the next 100 minutes essentially remade the Irish actor into punching, kicking, shooting superstar. It turns out we had a genre icon hiding in plain sight the whole time.

#Farewell @midnight – Viacom Corporate

#Farewell @midnight – Viacom Corporate
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
August 8, 2017 @ 5:04 PM
Comedy Central’s @midnight – which aired its final episode last Friday – had a nearly impossible premise: define the indefinable by corralling the social media mosh pit that the internet has become into something graspable and tangible. But for four years and 600 episodes, Chris Hardwick and an ever-shuffling crew of established and up-and-coming comedians did an admirable job of doing exactly that.
“Nothing else on television today has done as much to showcase the humor and improvisational abilities of stand-up comics and comedic actors. In fact, nothing else in the modern peak TV era has replicated what The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson did for comedy.” – Andrew Husband, Uproxx
The format was simple enough: each night, a panel of three comedians competed gameshow-style to contemplate internet-inspired queries in a sort of freestyle inverse Jeopardy, where there were no right answers, only clever ones.
What, for example, would be the most appropriate way to join the Koch Brothers’ celebration of fossil fuels for Earth Day? What would be an ironclad commandment for a theoretical Star Wars religion? If Pitbull ran for governor of Florida, what would his campaign slogan be? What, you are probably wondering, would be the advantages of global warming? Arden Myrin, Orlando Jones and Nimesh Patel have their ideas on that one:
youtube
The cornerstone of the show, of course, was #HashtagWars, the recurring segment that unleashed bizarre and – for the uninitiated – inexplicable trending Twitter threads every weeknight the show aired. In the final episode, Hardwick himself swerved into button-slamming mode, jumping in as a contestant for the first time in the show’s history, riffing on #BabyMovies, #DeadTV, #StonerBroadway, #AnimalMovies, #DrunkVideoGames and other topics among a rotating power panel of biting comics:
youtube
For this raucous, inspired and highly original platform, the show won two Emmys – for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media Social TV Experience – in both 2015 and ’16, as well as copious praise from critics, who lauded the show’s role as a pipeline for emerging comedic talent.
“Whether you’re a hardcore fan, an occasional viewer, or a greenhorn whose first exposure was hearing the news, the loss of the Chris Hardwick-hosted faux game show is significant,” wrote Uproxx’s Andrew Husband, detailing how Ron Funches, Nikki Glaser, Chris Cubas, Milana Vayntrub and others found an audience and subsequent projects either directly from or soon after their @midnight appearances. “Nothing else on television today has done as much to showcase the humor and improvisational abilities of stand-up comics and comedic actors. In fact, nothing else in the modern peak TV era has replicated what The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson did for comedy.”
This ever-revolving cast helps to explain how the show stayed fresh for hundreds of renditions as the broader news-social axis increasingly clotted around one or two outrage-of-the-day issues. “But while some subjects were unavoidable — Cash me ousside, Harambe (#RIP) [links added by Viacom], that damn dress — the diligent research team on @midnight plumbed the nether regions of the world wide web to introduce hilariously stupid memes (and cat videos) to new audiences nightly,” L.A. Ross wrote in Mashable. “It was that symbiotic relationship with the internet — the name of the show is its Twitter handle, after all — which created a feedback loop of content that remained fresh for 600 episodes.”
When combined with viral-length segments, the topical comedy and fresh voices merged to form a show both of and perfectly suited to its time. “More importantly, the structure of @midnight was perfect for our ongoing short-attention-span era,” Wrote John Hugar in A.V. Club. “At a time when comedy—and comedy stardom—can be delivered in 140 characters or six-second video loops, watching an entire stand-up special can feel like work, especially if you aren’t familiar with the comic in question. The rapid-fire style of @midnight played into the laugh-a-second nature of the 21st-century market.”
The comedic community’s appreciation for the show was apparent for the final episode, where more than two dozen comics – including Weird Al Yankovic, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel, Hannah Hart, Thomas Lennon, Paul F. Tompkins, Ron Funches, Jermaine Fowler, Riki Lindhome, Wil Wheaton, Scott Aukerman – rallied at the studio to be part of the final episode:
Our final @midnight airs at midnight tonight! Was honored to share the stage w/ these brilliant comedians I’m proud to call friends! #points pic.twitter.com/aJzX2cIYZ9
— Chris Hardwick (@hardwick) August 4, 2017
As the show wraps its run, some of its fans have been mourning. “What this show brought to the TV landscape will likely be perpetually-underrated: Great comedy, joyful escapism, and an opportunity for discovery,” went a typical tribute, on Cartermatt.com.
Hardwick echoed this sentiment when he signed off the final #HashtagWars segment: #AtMidnightIn5Words. His response? “Best job I ever had.”
But Comedy Central’s late-night programming is still stuffed with a robust and growing slate. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah is posting record ratings, and The Opposition with Jordan Klepper – starring the former Daily Show correspondent – will debut on Sept. 25. The President Show, starring Anthony Atamanuik, has been extended to a 22-episode run, and the net has ordered 10 additional episodes of The Jim Jefferies Show.
