my love of moths, mothman, and skeletons... all combined into one.

Don’t let the pretty wings and glowing eyes fool you. The moth monsters are just that- monsters. Unlike the small, harmless, sometimes pretty insects that share their name (who feed on nectar if they eat at all) these moth monsters are active carnivores with a taste for human flesh. They roam the skies and forests when the sun goes down... they’re the reason you stay indoors when it’s dark.

But there’s a soft side to them, too. Of course. They build themselves lovely nests, their wings are silky and fluffy all over- and they’re all looking for a mate to share that fluffiness with. 

Sans: He has wings like this hypocrita plagifera.

He’s rather cold, reserved, lazy and keeping to himself and his den unless he feels like he absolutely has to go out. It’s a wonder his wings stay so fabulously pretty when he spends so little time grooming. And he has good reason to be lazy- he’s a fantastic hunter, lightning fast and silent as a breeze, with terrifyingly keen eyesight to top it all off. No kill has escaped him...

... Well, except for one. If anyone ever asks him, he let Mc go deliberately because he’s so cool and gentlemanly, he changed his mind about using force after realising she’d be a perfect mate, he wants to properly romance her. Really? He saw how pretty she was and freaked out, freezing up long enough for her to escape. 

The moth monster got butterflies in his stomach. 

Red: Wings like this saturniidae, just with a much darker crimson tint in place of the more orangey-red shown here.

Breaking from tradition a little- it’s actually Red who encounters Mc first in this au. Unlike Sans, Red actually lets go of prey quite a lot, enjoying the fun of hunting but not necessarily the actual killing. Mc is a rare case of a prey he just WON’T let escape. He was nomadic beforehand, but he likes his dear little human so much that he’s settled down in her local area with the intent of building himself a nest and ‘convincing’ her to stay with him permanently. 

Whenever she passes through the forest alone, he meets her on the road to walk and talk and harass her with flirting. Bear in mind this is during the day... very unusual behaviour from a moth monster, maybe even a little worrying. And although he can make her laugh, he’s by no means well behaved- several kiss/kidnapping attempts have already been thwarted by bug spray in the face.

Skull: Wings of a rocky mountain agapema.

A human attack left him scarred, with a wing permanently damaged- flying isn’t impossible but it’s very difficult and he chooses to spend the majority of his life grounded. This has made him a lot larger than most moth monsters (and yes, he’s also the fluffiest of the group). He actually lives, mostly, in a cave deep in the woods he’s turned into a den over the years; this actually works in his favour because occasionally humans will come stumbling in, seeking shelter, thinking the real danger is in the sky. They walk all but right into his jaws.

He only goes outdoors during a new moon, and his favourite nights are the cloudy ones where it’s suffocatingly dark and his immensely powerful hearing and smell can get to work. He doesn’t hunt for food on those nights; he’s hunting for her. He saw her once, and once was enough.

On those new moons, Mc often hears strange noises outside her home. It’s a good thing she doesn’t look out the window.

Mothman AU ? I guess ???

I legit have no explanation for this except that @the-shark-well found some cool moths and somehow ?? we recognized the boys in those moths ???listen it’s 4:30 AM i’m tired

Jon is an Agapema homogena (rocky mountain emperor) mothman and Sock is a Loepa oberthuri (Oberthur's emperor) mothman.

They hide their wings and antennae the best they can (aka : a backpack, a jacket and some hats) and their eyes shift between normal vision and night vision.
