Marie Presley, interview for Rolling Stone Magazine, 1997, introducing her film TLC: The Presley Way

Marie: “You know, I’m used to being asked how it impacted me being the child with the least ‘parental involvement.’ But I really don’t get it, not even when my siblings joke that Elvis was more like Santa to me than dad, a merry-making stranger who showed up once in a blue moon to spread love and cheer before rushing back to the workshop to make more goodies the rest of the year.

“Maybe there’s some truth in that but how was I to know? I didn’t know anything differently than what I had, just like lots of kids you don’t know what else you could’ve had, just like I didn’t know anything different from being very privileged, um, just as my dad didn’t know any different from being very poor.

“But what I do know is that I was very loved, I have been my whole life, and what I have are a treasure trove of memories, extensive amounts of time spent with him at all ages. I look at it this way, we wouldn’t say someone is fatherless just because their dad is gone every day of their life from seven in the morning to six in the evening, that’s a whole lotta time to be gone.

“Whereas I had months on end where I saw Dad from sunup to sundown, slept in my parents bed, ate and played and read with them. Spent time on homework and perhaps most personally impactful, I had my own interests nurtured by them. Dad spoiled me, there’s no question about it, but it wasn’t in the way of rich men giving their kids toys and telling them to then run along, leave them alone.

“Dad engaged with me on everything and anything interesting to me, anything that interested my siblings he would spend hours on it, not even the fun part of say -photography. But the boring details, too. If there was a new camera he would get it for me and together we could figure out how to make it work, how to develop the film, how to get the perfect exposure.

“We’d pour over artists' work and do our best to mimic them. It was play but it was always constructive, and when I think back on those late Vegas afternoons that were his mornings, that he would spend tirelessly engaged with me and my siblings, only to then have to go out and perform multiple times into the night, the adult in me is exhausted and grateful that he took the time. That he did it all so cheerfully that I had no idea how worn out he was.

“The divorce years were hard, I was an eight year old and definitely attuned to the different dynamics in my family. I was very close with my sister Ella who was extremely unhappy at the time, maybe more so than most of my siblings. So her discontent rubbed off on me a little, confused me. But for the most part I didn’t notice a big change, mom and daddy really tried to keep it under wraps, multiple times they insisted there wasn’t a team to pick, and maybe that was too nuanced for the older kids but I got it, I chose not to pick teams.

And before it had lasted very long, we were all back together again.

“Daddy didn’t have a tour, what with Colonel Parker being under investigation, and he stayed home because of Danny, and Daisy and then they got remarried. It was a blip for me really. I got to live with Ella, I got to travel around with Jesse and dad, I got to visit Rosalee out at college. It seemed more like a vacation bouncing than banishment. I was really fine with it, maybe I’m just built that way, it wasn’t as devastating as it might’ve been for another child.

“I do remember my ninth birthday being the single bummer of it all. Or at least, the day started off going decidedly down hill.

“I was the baby who made it after the tragedy of them losing Jo, and you beat believe dad always made a huge deal of my birthday. He’d always tickle the Angel kisses on the back of my neck and remind everyone how Jo and Gladys sent me, mama would recount the story of my birth and my siblings would recall how they laid hands on mama’s belly and prayed I’d come out safe every day for eight months before I was born.

So after nine years of this, when I came downstairs in ‘77 to find that the earth and divorce proceedings hadn’t screeched to a stop just to celebrate me, I was pretty miffed.

I remember just feeling like the vibes were really off at the house, even though dad had come back to celebrate, it was obvious he was very upset with mom. I remember Jesse took me riding on his bike that day, we got out of the house and had fun and I remember when he put me on it, mom and dad were in a deep discussion on the porch, apparently about the fact that I was having a meltdown over not being treated special enough. I've already admitted I was very spoiled, OK folks?

“But the real big thing for me was that by the time I came back from that ride and opened my presents and we ate dinner, things seemed perfectly fine, normal and natural. That night we went through our usual routine and I climbed in the bed with mom and dad like old times. Now that I think about it, that was probably the first time in months that they slept together, and they did that for me. And they did it so naturally and it was really a happy evening, even for them, I think.

“It’s funny how professional you can get at getting along when you’ve had to endure so much like they had, one night of harmony in the middle of a divorce wasn’t a big hurdle for them. There was so much love still there and so much practice, just a lotta confusion. You can see why I wasn’t very surprised when Mama showed up with a baby and a wedding band back on her finger. It might sound bizarre to outsiders, and it’s certainly been portrayed like that by some of our closest friends, but in this film I’d like to set the record straight. It’s what I saw lived out.

Love can be very chaotic sometimes, complex and bizarre but it tries its best. It seeks the good of others. It’s the catalyst for great things and produces generous hearts. And my family certainly did just that.”

donyale <3

donyale luna was a supermodel and actress during the 1960s. she's cited as being the first black supermodel and the first black model to appear on vogue. she was a muse to salvador dali and starred in numerous underground films of the 1960s.

born peggy ann freeman to middle class parents she spent her teenager years studying typing, journalim and the performing arts. she later went by the name "donyale george luna"- a persona she'd created, and in 1963 she was discovered by a modelling agent who recommended she move to new york to find work as a model or actress. in 1964 donyale was introduced to the editor of harper's bazaar. the same year she wored with paco rabanne and witnessed him being harrased & spit on by american journalists for casting all black models.

in 1965 she moved to london due to the racism she was facing in america, and a mental breakdown. her likeness was also sketched onto the cover of harper's bazaar, but was marketed as being 'racially ambigious.' the same year she was photographed with supermodel jean shrimpton, and half of the beatles- paul mccartney and ringo starr. in 1966 she was the first black woman to be on the cover of british vogue, worked with mary quant and gained the title "model of the year.' she was one of the top models, and in 1967 she was on numerous album covers as well as the film 'tonite lets all make love in london.'

in 1968 she was in the rolling stones' rock n roll circus, and was friends with brian jones. in 1969 she was on the cover of american vogue. in 1973 and 1974 donyale stayed in north america, doing runways in new york and toronto. in 1974 she was on warhol's magazine (called interview) and in 1975 she was in playboy.

her career began to decline which was due to her drug use (which was controversial) and also being described as unpredictable to work with. she had small acting roles on tv and in counterculture films. notably in 1967 when she was in tonite let's all make love in london, as well as the rolling stones rock n roll circus.

donyale's legacy is one of faking it until you make it- creating a persona of sorts and embodying that. she faced racial discrimination during her time as a model, but nevertheless she worked hard and helped pave the way for other black models in the industry. she rejected being type-cast to a certain look, or fitting the 'exotic' look photographers wanted her to have. unfortunately this has led to the modeling industry forgetting about her, despite how hard she worked and how much she accomplished. although she isn't talked about much donyale has shaped modern modelling, and her silent legacy is still carried on.

Willow

Willow is about an affair with someone she desires like a prize, she cheats to win him. The Willow Song is in Shakespeare's Othello. Harry Styles Sweet Creature also references Othello about Taylor. To People on 5 December 2023 Aaron said Taylor wrote

Due to their huge spread willows are susceptible to wind and flexible, so they have deep and strong roots. It's symbolism for a strong bond that's tenacious and grows in poor conditions. A Willow appears in Begin Again, where it was also shot a similar way.

The film clip picks up straight from Cardigan which is also about Harry. The children in the tent is a reference to Everything has Changed and Seven. In a Livestream Taylor said the film clip referenced Exile, which I think is "I've seen this film before and didn't like the ending." In Cardigan she was 'changed' but she stayed where she started, in Willow she leaves with her muse.

There are green curtains when Taylor is behind the glass, Taylor said this references Mirrorball. Harry is also behind glass in the As it was and referred to 'being behind the glass' as something others couldn't understand, separating them from other people. This is similar to the gilded cage theme. She also uses similar imagery to refer to her stolen masters for her Eras being behind glass in the Eras tour and I Can See You music video.

The dancer is from Red tour (IKYWT). The posters behind him say The Python and The Man of Fire (a Sweet Nothing and William Bowery reference, in Rolling Stone Paul McCartney told Taylor his pseudonym was Fireman). The Man of Fire is is doing the Whale. (!!)

The cloak is like the one in Ready for it and Green. They step into the Daylight at the end. The Invisible string ends in the cabin.

To Zane Lowe Taylor said:

'It felt like somebody's standing over a potion making a love potion dreaming up the person that they want and the person they desire and trying to figure out how to get that person in their life and all the kind of misdirection and bait and switch.' The complexity of seeing someone, feeling a connection wanting them and trying to make them a part of your life. It's tactical at times, it's confusing at times. I wanted to set the vibe of magical and mysterious." and "One of the main themes [of Folklore] was conflict resolution, get through something with someone, making confessions or communicating. Evermore deals a lot in endings of all sorts shapes and sizes all the kinds of ways"

To people magazine 5 December 2023 Aaron Dessner said it was the first song after folklore:

“There are so many stories I could share. When I sent Taylor the music for our song "Willow" — I think she wrote the entire song from start to finish in less than 10 minutes and sent it back to me. It was like an earthquake. Then Taylor said, "I guess we are making another album."

Othello and Sweet Creature

The Willow Song is a real folk song referred to in Shakespeare's Othello. Othello is married to Desdemona. Lago seeds doubt in Othello's mind that Desdemona has been unfaithful with Cassio. Desdemona sings part of 'The Willow Song' in which a lady mourns her true love lost, the singer dies from their false love's cruelty. As the folk song foreshadowed, Othello loses his mind and kills Desdemona in a jealous rage.

Considering Taylors comments above that Folklore is about communication (with songs like Cardigan, The 1 and Exile where she cleared some air with Harry). And her comment that Evermore is about endings, and Willow figuring out who one wants and Masterminding them into one's life. Like it's namesake, Taylor's Willow is expressing a wistful desire for a lost true love. The context implies neglect and distrusted by her partner at that time.

The Othello reference implies the object of her desire, the title of Harry Styles Sweet Creature is an Othello quote. Sweet Creature mocked CH's unwarranted belief that he had had an affair with Taylor, it also expresses Harry's love for Taylor.

I have seen analysis suggesting that Willow is retelling of Othello from Desdemona POV, but it isn't. Desdemona is an innocent victim, She's faithful and says she would not cheat for anything short of the whole world then is murdered. Taylor's character in Willow has more agency and would 'cheat to win' a trophy of man that she describes in Gold Rush. Unlike Desdemona, she has desire, which Taylor described to Zane Lowe. She is the character in the Willow Song - stuck in a false love, longing for her lost true love. It is a metaphor for Taylors own life, Sweet Creature parallel intended. Which explains the video with links to Taylor's past since Red.

Lyrics

To WFPK Taylor described the couple in Coney Island and Exile as 'Ships in the Night' in having trouble communicating. A similar water theme is here. Although she is not open to a relationship, she is rough on the surface, he gets through and she wants him.

She is defenceless and lost wanting to be with him. (Wonderland: "We found wonderland, you and I got lost in it").

Wine is a theme, (spilt on many dresses (Clean), shirts (Maroon), bathtubs (Dress) and a sea here).

Life was a willow and it bent right to your wind (oh) Head on the pillow, I could feel you sneaking in As if you were a mythical thing Like you were a trophy or a champion ring And there was one prize I'd cheat to win

Life is a willow that bent to your wind is brings the symbolism of a strong, deep force that grows around and with life's interferance. She has grown around this love, bending with it over time.

She feels her muse sneaking in to her pillow, sneaking implies an affair, this is not her boyfriend but someone she desires more that has had a deep impact on her life. This is confirmed with being willing to cheat to be with this muse.

She desires him like a prize, she describes Harry with similar desirability in Gold Rush, where she is intimidated by how desired he is, here she is proud he is her man. Similar to Gold Rush which starts with 'I almost jump in' Willow started with her having a rough surface he cuts through, both body of water metaphors.

The more that you say The less I know Wherever you stray I follow

'The more you say, the less I know' refers to her confusion over being in a committed relationship. In Folklore she and Harry communicated about their past in The 1, Cardigan and Exile. She's now confused about the path she is on and questioning if she should leave her partner. In The 1 she sang "And if you wanted me, you really should've showed", he now has and she is confused.

Wherever you stray a follow is similar to Lover "can I go where you go?" Also in Treacherous "And I'll do anything you say / If you say it with your hands". Also Harry's Medicine. "If you go out tonight, I'm going out 'cause I know you're persuasive"

I'm begging for you to take my hand Wreck my plans That's my man You know that my train could take you home Anywhere else is hollow

"Begging for you take my hand" refers to:

Blank Space: "Grab your passport and my hand"

I Know Places: "Just grab my hand and don’t ever drop it"

New Romantics: "Please take my hand and please take me dancing", and

As it Was "I want you to hold out the palm of your hand / Why don't we leave it at that?"

"You know that my train could take you home" Home is an important concept between Harry and Taylor who sing about each other as home. Trains are also mentioned in Cardigan and Sad Beautiful Tragic, which Cardigan's BTS links to Cardigan.

'Anywhere else is hollow' is similar to Ready for it? "Every lover known in comparison is a failure" and Question...? "Does it feel like everything's just like second-best after that Meteor strike?" and Harry's MMIH "Once you go without it nothing else will do"

I'm begging for you to take my hand Wreck my plans That's my man

"Wreck my plans", Taylors plans were to stay with the partner that, in Willow Song, is jealous and neglectful. This muse has shown up and that's out the window.

"That's my man" refers to the cyclical nature of their relationship:

Style: And when we go crashing down we come back every time

Blank Space: "But you’ll come back each time you leave"

Out Of The Woods: "We were built to fall apart, then fall back together"

How You Get The Girl: "Broke your heart, I’ll put it back together"

This Love: "When you’re young you just run, but you come back to what you need"

Life was a willow and it bent right to your wind (oh) They count me out time and time again Life was a willow and it bent right to your wind (oh) But I come back stronger than a 90's trend

I love this, to me the 90's trend/come back (to me) is a reference to 1989 and Style/the cycle nature of their relationship. In this part of the film clip she also references Reputation and where she was counted out and came back stronger.

Wait for the signal and I'll meet you after dark Show me the places where the others gave you scars Now this is an open-shut case Guess I should've known from the look on your face Every bait and switch was a work of art

Taylor further discusses how she meets her lover after dark, this is describing an affair as in Illicit Affairs.

He shares his vulnerability, where the scars are. Harry has sung of showing Taylor scars in If I could fly "I've got scars, even though they can't always be seen. And pain gets hard, but now you're here and I don't feel a thing. Pay attention, I hope that you listen cause I let my guard down. Right now I'm completely defenseless" I think she is also referring to Seven.

Taylor used 'Bait and switch in promotion for "Look at what you made me do" the bait and switch was that Reputation seemed like one thing but was about finding love through the noise. While Taylor dated Joe for the last 4 months before it's release, the album was primarily written by September 2016 before they started dating.

Taylor also referred to Zane Lowe about "The complexity of seeing someone, feeling a connection wanting them and trying to make them a part of your life. It's tactical at times, it's confusing at times." in the music video and Era's tour she has a witches gathering to use all her power and bring this muse into her life.

CASA TIDMOUTH’S MOST NORMAL AND RELIABLE RAILWAY WORKERS: THE STEAM TEAM

Thomas Awdry Billington

Age: 23 Occupation: NWR 1's driver

Very cheeky and even nosy at times. Every time someone he dislikes gets into trouble, his immediate response is to make a joke out of their situation. Except when it’s something absolutely serious, which is rare. He always puts his best in anything he does and will excitedly prove himself to be the best person up for any job offered to him… which sometimes results in him getting into accidents and mishaps. Edward took him under his wing ever since he started working in the railways three years ago, making Thomas look up to him fondly and consider him a father figure.

He holds the Golden Whistle that is connected to the Shining Time world and stores golden dusts. It also helps control the usage of gold dusts during Lady’s time in Sodor so it won’t run out. He also runs a bulletin board called Sodor's Rumors where railway workers can write and submit the latest gossip or news to the board, whether it’s signed or anonymous. Ones about the quarry workers usually interest him because he's a curious little guy. He noticed, however, that rumors about spirits and suspicious people started popping up more and more ever since Lady joined Sodor Railways. There’s something else, though. He can’t help but feel that he might have forgotten someone important.

Trivia:

The shortest out of the Steam Team. Gordon sometimes calls him “little Thomas” because of this. Also because of his bed hair.

Huge fan of Depeche Mode. His favorite album is Violator.

He seems to never run out of energy.

The bottom of his huge ass shoes has retractable rollers. 6 on each sole, complete with side rods. Similar to the wheels of his steam engine!

Likes: adventures, tootsie rolls, playing elaborate pranks, locomotive anatomy Dislikes: people who are jerks for no reason, string beans

Percival “Percy” Avonside

Age: 22 Occupation: NWR 6's driver

Thomas’ partner in gold dust hunting. He’s also his best friend even though they have their moments of disagreement. He holds the polaroid camera that can capture pictures of golden dusts and sparkling trails that are invincible to normal eyes in an area. His mail delivery is also part of Sodor’s Postal Service. Being a generally good-natured and obedient person, people who don’t know any better like to mistake his positive traits as naivety.

With his history of being treated as a doormat or stepping stone, whenever he felt like someone is being close to him just to use him for their personal gain, his perception of them can change quickly from trusting and loving to skeptical and critical. Even though he’s a generally polite and well-mannered young man to (almost) everyone, there are several moments where he snaps and just outright calls out said person who wronged or made fun of him. All of these factors result in his actions usually following what he believes can be beneficial to him and is the best for his well-being. Is he really the sweet, pouty, often snarky Percy that everyone knows and recognizes on the surface? Whatever the answer is, does it really matter as long as he’s useful?

Trivia:

Back in high school, he was an ace pitcher for his school team called the Sodor Sobriquets.

His magical polaroid camera works without using any films. He got it inside the wishing well when he accidentally fell inside it during his first day at work.

He gets easily annoyed at people who constantly coddle him.

He collects comic books and magazines as a hobby.

Likes: watching soccer and baseball matches, eggs Benedict Dislikes: being called “Dirty Percy”, not being taken seriously, apricots

Edward Pettigrew

Age: 46 Occupation: NWR 2's driver

The old reliable! He’s a generally kind and patient person. He rarely ever takes insults or jokes to heart and just patiently waits for misfortune to befall whoever mocks him. Even enjoys it more whenever he gets to be the one dragging their sorry ass out of trouble. However, those who have known him for a long time know not to mess with him. Despite not submitting things to the Sodor’s Rumours Bulletin Board, he likes to smile and nod while reading the railway workers’ quips and notes. When he was younger, he was bold and brash and can never bow down to authority figures. He was also quite a charmer back in the day, something that his two closest coworkers always tease to him.

Even though he’s now a sagely man with a lot of life experiences, he seems to hide a lot of things and know matters someone like him shouldn’t have…? No need to think much about it, though! Probably nothing important, just wise Edward being wise Edward.

Trivia:

He’s great at ballroom dancing and skateboarding.

He used to get into street fights as a young man.

That long scarf is a gift from Henry back when they were younger.

Something about the smiles he gives whenever he’s made fun of by his friends don’t seem pleasant. Feels quite unnerving, even. What is up with that? Oh well.

Likes: old songs, folk tales, black tea Dislikes: what does he even dislike?

Henry Stanier

Age: 42 Occupation: NWR 3's driver

Used to frown and complain about tough work a lot. He was incredibly protective of his engine and got upset at seeing any stain or dent on it. He’s also extremely worried that heavy workload can put a strain on or even damage it. A long time ago, he hid himself and NWR 3 inside a tunnel to shield from the rain. This and that happened, his engine gets bricked when he went to work the next day, he attended a church sermon for the first and only time to find inner peace, and after he learned his lesson his engine is finally free (to help out Gordon)... but the wildness of his story doesn’t simply end there!

After his first Flying Kipper delivery went horrifyingly wrong and he died in the accident, he got to meet Lady in the Shining Time world who eventually revived him. Since that event, his view on life has never been so offputtingly bright and positive. He lives life cheerfully and is now a much kinder and friendlier person, even though he has his moments of snarkiness (though it’s usually out of saying the truth bluntly instead of being mean). With that amount of epiphanies and one divine intervention, the comparison between his past self and current self can be quite jarring.

Trivia:

He is narcoleptic.

After Lady disguised herself as a regular railway worker and met Henry for the second time, Henry thought that his time is finally up. This is not the case however, which resulted in both of them laughing hysterically after Lady talked with him.

Every time someone mentions “beauty” and “life” in the same sentence within his earshot, he’ll go into an enlightened ramble with a bright, cordial expression.

When he’s stuck in a situation with seemingly no way out, he’ll start writing his will in his cellphone. If there’s moss, he’ll start eating that.

He doesn't remember anything from his childhood before he was adopted by two rich as hell parents. He doesn't have a birth certificate and nobody really knows where he comes from. Either these facts or his encounter with Lady is the reason why his view on life is quite… unique, to say at least.

Likes: nature, apple slices, Desi dishes, shitty reality TV shows Dislikes: people who are annoying, people who don’t do their jobs properly, people who are noisy, people who are just downright pathetic

Gordon Gresley

Age: 41 Occupation: NWR 4's driver

Prideful and can be rude at times. He’s very ambitious and takes his occupation as the driver of the greatest and most beloved express train in all of Sodor seriously. Because of his upbringing, he used to look down on those that he deems weak or is contributing less and less to the railways. He’s also quite competitive and always pushes himself to his limits in order to live up to his (and - when the situation calls for it - his engine’s) reputation and restore any remaining glory of the Gresley name.

A lot of people view the Gresley lineage as suspicious or even cursed because of how easily its members die out under unnatural circumstances (illness, accidents, etc.). The formerly large and respected nuclear family of nine is now reduced to just him, Scott, and his mother. The subject is frequently brought up during Scott’s interviews and reporters who recognize Gordon always try to pry information out of him (the main reason why he moved to Sodor). Even though he loves and lives off attention, the ones that are given by reporters and journalists are always met with scowls and exasperated “go away”s from him.

Despite scoffing at the idea of the Sodor’s Rumours Bulletin Board and thinking that it’s a silly idea, he submits rants whenever his brother finished calling him on the phone. He sometimes gets embarrassed in showing affection or appreciation which made people who don’t know him well assume that he’s distant and unappreciative.

Trivia:

Despite not liking his mother very much, he still maintains a decent (???) relationship with Scott and his cousins just so she would stop getting worried and pestering him.

Even though he has a high image of himself, he gets easily thrown off guard whenever faced with a crowd or confronted directly.

He, Henry, and Edward used to be an incredibly tight-knit trio when they were younger. However, as the years passed, he felt like the three of them don’t have that much in common anymore (Henry slowly turned into someone quieter and more passive, Edward became more calm and less brash). They’re all still… friends, but sometimes Gordon can’t help but feel like things really aren’t the same between them as they used to.

James Augustine Hughes

Age: 35 Occupation: NWR 5's driver

An incredibly pompous person, James thinks highly of himself. VERRRY highly. His entire design and personality just screams “Look at me. Look at how handsome and fabulous I am and praise me!”. He absolutely hates it when he sees other people getting praised or complimented for the things that he has (people who fully dress in reds and golds or wear aviators just like him and get complimented for those). Sometimes he reads complaints and worries submitted by others in the Sodor’s Rumours Bulletin Board to make him feel better about himself.

Due to the events of his childhood and teenage years, he has a habit of wanting to get into popular cliques or feared friend groups, a juxtaposition of his arrogant and self-centered personality. He looks up to people who are respected or even worshiped by their peers and even tries to be just like them. There are certain kinds of people that he believes is worthy of his respect, but he is starting to get more and more unsure of who exactly they are ever since he became proper friends with Thomas and Percy.

Trivia:

When he was in high school, he wanted to become a psychologist. He gave up on pursuing it after he got into a nasty fight with a teacher and got a mean scolding from the principal and his parents. He was also a bit quiet back then.

If he gets ignored a little too much, he starts to panic.

He’s good at reading others and quick to notice change.

He looks up to Gordon and respects him greatly, even going so far as to be just like him for his approval. Though as the story progresses, things really aren’t looking bright for this statement.

He’s fluent in Spanish and French.

Tobias “Toby” Holden

Age: 56 Occupation: NWR 7's driver

Despite his age and his engine being considered one of the slowest in the railways, he works hard and diligently. He also has a good sense of humor and lends a good ear to anyone with interesting stories and tales. Even though he's a knowledgeable and wise driver that knows how to handle problems slowly, he can be temperamental at times and frowns at the sight of people with unchecked egos and self-righteousness. Due to experiences in the past that also got Henrietta involved, he actually distrusts youth who think they know all and act all mighty because of their new technology, engines, and even actions that have potential to harm others when used carelessly.

At day, Tobias Holden is NWR 7's driver. At night, he reads records and books about Sodor's history with anomalies and significant cultural differences compared to Mainland's. Not originally from Sodor, he is aware of the island's cultural and environmental quirkiness and can't handle the thought of his wife being involved with those sorts of things. Even though he avoids confrontations, he'll do anything to get rid of anything that threatens the harmony of his life - and to an extent - the railways. He’ll make sure ghosts and spirit don’t exist. He’ll make sure the cases of people disappearing and other ones appearing out of nowhere don’t struck him and the people he cares about. There's an itch at the back of his mind that says that a certain driver for the NWR 2 and a lady dressed in magenta aren't really as simple as they look on the surface, and he's not going to keep quiet about it… eventually.

Trivia:

Rumours had it that he once got arrested in his youth because he body-slammed a cop.

He wishes to live a quiet life someday. There must be no other place as pretty as this island.

He likes hearing Thomas' jokes.

He doesn't like the idea of being separated from Henrietta. He'll do anything for her. Anything.

Likes: tiramisu, slow dancing, seeing pompous young people getting into trouble, his wife <3 Dislikes: people in power.

Moving from magazines to movies, Stewart talked about making lesbian-themed films like Loves Lies Bleeding for mainstream audiences, rather than in and for an echo chamber. “We can’t keep doing that thing where we tell everyone how to feel, and where we sort of pat each other on the back and receive brownie points for providing space for marginalized voices and only in the capacity that they are allowed to speak about that alone,” Stewart told the Berlinale presser .

“The era of queer films, being so pointedly only that, is over. It’s done. Maybe they’ll happen, but I think things develop and move on. It’s just so inherent to how we’re all moving forward,” she added. Stewart pointed to Happiest Season, her LGBTQ+ Christmas romcom that was entirely commercially-driven, and yet sparked in her an interest in bringing to wider audiences other movies with diverse voices and issues.

“It’s not making (movies) about the reasons that they’re sidelined, but peoples’ actual experiences, what they love, what their desires are, where they come from, where they want to go and, yeah, not feeling like you always have to stand on a fucking soapbox and be everyone’s spokesperson,” Stewart argued.

Was there any discussion or preparation with Gillian (Anderson)? I like to work with what an actor gives me. I'm a big fan of Gillian's. It was just a treat. I mean, she made it very difficult with Andrew, and therefore easier for me to play the part, because she had the uncanniness of what she was doing to what I have studied. I really, really felt like I was in the hot seat. And luckily, I'd done enough work that what that brought out in me was more Andrew-like. But no, there wasn't. I think very much the idea was to have that initial meeting, because that's what it really was, apart from a brief consultation that the characters had before, that was the time they really met. They didn't get much of a gauge on each other until that time. If we ever did a run-through, we'd always do it half energy, because you don't want anything special to happen when it's not filming.

What were the concerns taking on the role? What I want to do as an actor is that your loyality is to the truth of the character. You want to represent that, warts and all, which is actually the easy part. The tricky part with certain characters is trying to give the non-warts and even the elements of a character that might be less unattractive, more charming, equal light. You're not there to rehabilitate, you are not there to condemn, but merely to offer up and try to come up with something that you believe as an interior monologue makes sense to themselves in that moment. And I could see what I thought all of those things were, by watching him closely. I know from experience and from hanging out with other human beings in my live that it is possible to mix guils with feelings of victimisation. Anyone who's ever been in a relationship has had to deal with various levels of culpability and versions of apology and stuff.(..) I had a duty to kind of fairly represent him. And that doesn't mean to try people like him. That's quite scary, because you don't want to be accused of trying to rehabilitate someone or show that they're nice or show it from their side. Walking that line is very, very difficult. But in the end you've just got to do what you think is truthful.

Just another reminder about being cautious in relying on sites like Variety or Deadline concerning the strikes.

At this point, Variety and Deadline especially are being used as a controlled faucet for planned AMPTP "leaks." They're literally used as tools of the AMPTP. This isn't the only situation or instance of biases in entertainment news media (or news media in general. News media is biased, it comes with the territory. There's also entire journalism classes on the subject). Or the only instance I know of where entertainment media is used as a "leak" mouthpiece for an agenda. But the strike "reporting" has made it very loud and even more obvious.

For context, let's go back to September 2020. Penske Media, which owns a bunch of stuff, went into a joint venture with MRC, which owns a bunch of stuff. Including Dick Clark Productions, a member of the AMPTP. They make TV shows. PMRC therefore has financial interests in entertainment media sites and a TV production company.

Penske Media Corporation (PMC) has joined forces with MRC to bring together entertainment magazines including Variety and the Hollywood Reporter, as well as create a new partnership for film and television content.

In joint statements released Wednesday, the companies announced they’ll each have stakes in two new joint ventures to manage the suite of influential industry titles. One entity, PMRC, will house publishing outlets of both companies, bringing together Billboard, Rolling Stone, Vibe, Deadline, IndieWire and WWD along with Variety and the Hollywood Reporter, and be managed by PMC. Another joint venture managed by MRC — producer of film and TV including Netflix drama “Ozark,” Hulu documentary “Fyre Fraud,” Lionsgate feature “Knives Out” and the Golden Globe Awards (via its Dick Clark Productions division) — will be tasked with creating intellectual property from across the publications for new TV, film and live events. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

When the WGA and AMPTP went back into negotiations, there was supposed to be a media blackout.

Instead, last night, websites like Variety and Deadline ran articles with "leaks" about how the talks were going. The leakers being the AMPTP as a way to try to control the narrative, mislead the public in the PR war, and cause discouragement or division within the WGA, and make the AMPTP look like they're being so amazingly generous when they're still giving the WGA almost nothing.

Brian Griffin, who has died aged 75, was one of the most original and influential British photographers of his generation. His images of Kate Bush, Donald Sutherland, Iggy Pop and Damien Hirst, and his album covers for Echo and the Bunnymen and Depeche Mode, are some of the most famous pictures of the 1980s.

For the cover of Depeche Mode’s 1982 LP, A Broken Frame, Griffin transposed Soviet social realism to a cornfield off the M11 in East Anglia, and the result was named by Life magazine as one of the greatest images of the decade. His virtuosity saw him declared photographer of the decade by the Guardian in 1989.

His work, which has been exhibited globally, is in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery, the V&A, the Arts Council and the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

Griffin’s success capturing the glossy worlds of money and hairspray was rooted in something darker. He was forged in the Black Country, the industrial heartland of the West Midlands, and the influence of the factories, and the harsh light from the furnaces, suffused his early photography. He had a relentless work ethic and would do anything to succeed in a world far removed from that of his upbringing.

He was born in Birmingham, the only child of Edith (nee Moore) and James Griffin, who were both factory workers. The family lived in a two-up, two-down in Lye, where every street had a factory. Young Brian felt that “the whole world appeared to be partly made of metal. Everything you touched seemed to be iron and steel.” After passing the 11-plus exam he went to Halesowen technical school, then went to work at the age of 16.

In 1965 he was making conveyors for readymix concrete plants when the factory foreman suggested he join Hagley camera club, where he picked up a camera for the first time. He then got a job at British Steel and was working as a nuclear pipework engineering estimator in 1969 when everything changed. Devastated by the end of a love affair, he decided to leave his old life behind.

Griffin’s only means of escape was photography, so he put some of his camera club images into a Boots photo album and applied to art colleges. He was accepted into Manchester Art School at the age of 21, where he studied with Martin Parr and Daniel Meadows.

In the college library he devoured books on art, and after graduating and moving to London, he spent weeks at the National Film theatre immersing himself in German and French cinema. Inspired, he began to look for work.

In 1972 he went to see the art director of Management Today magazine. Griffin’s talent was plain to see, and he was immediately put to work. He shot a shadowy monochromatic image of rush hour on London Bridge from the back of a cab, calling it his Metropolis image, after Fritz Lang’s expressionist masterpiece. Prior to this, Griffin had doubted his ability, but now he knew that he could make it as a photographer, he unleashed his artistry.

Through his images for the magazine, Griffin introduced surrealism to the boardroom. His industrial background meant that he clicked with the businessmen who were his subjects, and the captains of industry played ball. He wittily subverted the corporate power of the men he photographed by introducing discordant juxtapositions, building tension. He wound intrigue throughout his work, stopping the viewer in their tracks, making them take time over his images, and his work began to be recognised.

Ambitious, he wanted to expand his repertoire and earn more money. He understood that the style he had honed in the business world would translate into the pop sphere, where post-punk bands were eschewing bondage trousers in favour of being suited and booted. He went to Stiff Records and photographed Elvis Costello and the Attractions and Ian Dury and the Blockheads.

Recognition followed and commissions flooded in. He worked for Esquire, Rolling Stone, the Face, Time Out, the Sunday Times and the Observer, in advertising for British Airways, BMW and Levi Jeans, and photographed Brian May in a series for Sony Walkman in 1980.

That year he moved to Rotherhithe, a working-class area of south London on the banks of the Thames. He loved the place, recognised its people and was to stay there all his life. He set up a studio from where he continued to push the boundaries of the conventional. Using his background in engineering, allied to his innate creativity, he built lighting machines and used knicker elastic and ping-pong balls to create startling special effects in an analogue age.

Some experiments led to happy accidents: his highly regarded 1984 image of Siouxsie Sioux, intended as a double exposure, was in fact a triple: “It was wrong, but so right,” he said.

In the days before social media, aside from magazines, the main showcase for a photographer’s work was on walls, be they in galleries or town centres. Griffin’s first solo London exhibition was at Contrast Gallery in 1981, and the posters of his work for bands such as Spandau Ballet and Ultravox were plastered across the land. His family finally saw his work and were proud: they had always wanted more for Brian than factory life.

As well as portraiture, he produced numerous documentary projects. In 1986 he photographed construction workers at the Broadgate development in the City of London. At the time he was still reeling from the death of his father from lung cancer, due to a life inhaling cast-iron dust. The project allowed Griffin to pay homage to his father and to all working people: he monumentalised the men “like knights lying in state in a cathedral with their swords”.

In 1989 he left still photography to make television commercials, music videos and short films, but returned a decade later. In 2003 he produced a project to aid Birmingham’s bid to become the European City of Culture. He worked promoting the 2012 London Olympics and in 2015 his photo-essay, Himmelstrasse, movingly documented the railway tracks in Poland that transported people to Nazi death camps. He continued to work up until the end of his life, with new projects still in the pipeline.

He had more than 20 monographs published in his lifetime and won numerous awards. In 2013 the Royal Photographic Society awarded him their Centenary Medal, and the following year he received an honorary doctorate from Birmingham City University for his lifetime contribution to his home city.

Griffin’s 1980 marriage to the photographer Frances Newman ended in divorce. Their daughter, Layla, died in 2020; he is survived by their son, Danz, and three grandchildren.

BERNIE WORRELL, Toronto, 1987

I became a Parliament-Funkadelic fan before I heard a note of their music. It was 1977, and I was reading my brother-in-law's copy of Rolling Stone, which contained a concert review of the P-Funk Earth Tour at the back of the magazine. I saw the costumes and the spaceship and despite Toronto radio being nearly completely P-Funk-free at the time, I thought this looked like it must sound amazing. When I finally found my way to hearing something by George Clinton and his band(s) - I think it might have been "Flash Light" but I'm not sure - I wasn't disappointed, and when I started taking photos I made it my mission to get a portrait of anyone who was involved in the P-Funk universe. First up, and quite without expecting it, was keyboardist Bernie Worrell.

I had, of course, seen Bernie Worrell as part of the extended Talking Heads filmed by Jonathan Demme for Stop Making Sense. P-Funk were on something of a hiatus in the '80s, so various members of the group were appearing in all kinds of situations, and Worrell showed up in Toronto as part of the Golden Palominos - drummer Anton Fier's art rock/indie supergroup. Worrell was born in New Jersey and was an accomplished musician, studying at Juilliard and the New England Conservatory of Music before a meeting with George Clinton inspired him to move to Detroit and become part of the collective of musicians recording and touring as either Parliament or Funkadelic or both.

I shot precisely four frames of Bernie Worrell, who I nervously approached during soundcheck at the El Mocambo, a Toronto club, knowing that I only had a third of a roll of 120 film left in my Mamiya C330. The stew of influences I was processing as a young photographer included Francis Wolff's work on the covers of Blue Note albums, and while I might not have been able to explain it at the time, I was definitely paying homage to (or ripping off, depending on how you look at it) Wolff's work on records by John Coltrane, Bud Powell and "Baby Face" Willette. I'm not sure these photos - the whole of the shoot, as of this post - have ever been published outside my old blog. Bernie Worrell died of cancer in 2016.

We don’t know the whole story

Although Harry and Taylor have never said when they met or started dating, often assumed to have met At the March 2012 Kids Choice Awards, because it was the first time we saw them together. 2 weeks after the awards Justin Bieber said a superstar liked Harry, but didn't name Taylor or say they met at the awards. I have a post about the Kids Choice awards/IKYWT Secret message and Harry's Jacket here.

A source close to Taylor later said to Vanity Fair he had chased her for a year, before the started dating, which was also before he kissed Emily Ostily on the 21 April 2012 and Taylor posted about infidelities to Instagram on 23 April 2012 (which doesn't make sense if they met 24 days earlier).

That would indicate they had met by March 2011. Which is likely as they were in the same city and locations throughout 2011. In 2014 Taylor told Rolling Stone:

"People think they know the whole narrative of my life, I think maybe that line is there to remind people that there are really big things they don’t know about."

As Taylor said to Time Magazine in 2023 and Harry said to Howard Stern in 2019 it's not in their interests for a new relationship to be public before they are solid. In Harry's words 'it's never benefited me' for a relationship to be public. In 2011 people were sent death threats for having dinner with him. It's no wonder they were hidden for most of that time. 27 March - Harry styles auditions for xfactor

12 December - X factor semi final, 1D third, Syco signed One Direction for £2 million, each boy was only paid an initial £8,000. Maybe signed on the 13th.

2011

4 January - Taylor broke up with JG, All to Well - March. Taylor seen in LA on the 5th January then not again for a month.

25-30 January 1D fly to Los Angeles. The Sun reported they were in US meeting writers and producers to start recording. It's likely they first met here.

5 February - Taylor seen for first time in a month, in LA, wearing the Key necklace in LA. It later appeared in the I knew you were trouble music video (4:45) and was sold as merchandise, there was a key for Fearless too, but it stopped after this.

19 February - 9 April; X-Factor live tour. TS tour break 20 & 21, 20th was X Factor O2 show.

17 - 30 March - Speak Now in Europe.

15 March - one direction Birmingham show, fans see boys leaving on the 16th then have 4 day weekend where he is not seen.

16 March - Taylor's Lover Journal talks about Paris, seeing castles, 4th grade and career anxiety over the Mean video. She talks about visiting having visited Neuschwanstein Castle that later appears in Bejewelled MV.

16 - 19 march Taylor seen in Paris

17 March - Taylor plays speak now in Paris at Zénith de Paris, in park bordered by Canal Saint-Denis, (technically) outside Saint-Denis. Holy ground's secret message is “when you came to the show in SD” later the film clips for Begin Again, EHC, Falling and LOT tour images all reference canals in Paris. Taylor plays Soul Sister / Fearless mash-up for the first time that show. Soul Sister was Harry's first X-Factor Audition song. She plays the mash-up on/off for the rest of the tour and on the DVD.

21 March - Taylor in London Recording Studio wearing a rose dress key from IKYWT video. Taylor wore a Rose ring and Rose Dress the day before too.

22 March - Taylor shopping at Portobello Market and photographed at Alice in Wonderland themed store (Wonderland)

23 March - a Wednesday, Taylor wore white dress (Begin again cover) in London, Harry also in London before Nottingham show. Vanity Fair article later says they'd known each other for a year by March 2012.

30 and 31 March - One Direction Tour Break, Speak Now at O2

27 May - November 22 - Speak now in US, arm lyrics start.

6-12 June - 1D in Sweden, likely record What makes you Beautiful.

13-20 June - 1D has a break, Harry unseen, not active on social and reappears in LA on the 20th. Taylor also free 13 - 16 other than the 15th:

15 June - Taylor arm lyrics "“A moment, a love, a dream, a laugh, a kiss, a cry, our rights, our wrongs.” – The Temper Trap, Sweet Disposition. Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. Exactly one year later Harry got the lyrics from this song tattoo'ed.

17 June - Lover Journal Taylor wrote in her journal on way to Nashville “Something so unexpected and amazing happened recently... I’ve become blissfully happy with my life. Like, actually grateful for every second of the day. I've notice this onset for a while, but it's really hit me in the last week and especially since I wrote those 2 new songs. I'm happy I get to meet so many people on the road who make me feel like my music really matters to them.” One song may be State of Grace.

20-27 June - 1D in LA. Speak now break 23 & 24 June.

14 September - asked who was most confident with girls LT says "Definitely without a question say Harry, like Harry, no matter how long is known her, or who she is he will go up to her, like if it's a celebrity, like at the GQ Awards, [Niall adds "Like Pixie Lott] he will go up and sing their song and dance. It's like 100% Harold Styles." Harry then changes the conversation to silly names, Louis brings up GQ again and Harry mouths "Stop going' on about it" (9:50).

18 - 30 September - 1D in New York, filmed Gotta be You in Lake Placid NY 29 and SUNY 29 September. Speak now break 18, 21 - 23 September, shows other days. The film clip included scenes on a train, the SBT message is "when you were on the train", she wrote it sometime on a bus. Speak Now dates in Colorado, Utah and Georgia. However, 28 September is possibly an anniversary and in the Four hang out (31-33) Harry said gotta be you was his favourite 1D song of all, which Niall clapped and said “well done Taylor your boyfriends back”. Harry met Emily Ostilly.

4 October - At Bring 1D to me Munich, when asked about ‘Celebrity Dreamgirls’ Louis says "Celebrity dreamgirls um, yeah like there's a lot of people I suppose that we think is HOT, like... Harry?" the look Zayn, Niall and Liam's expressions, and Louis this is not flirting, he is 'ribbing' Harry for making out with a famous person and sharing his secrets. Harry says his crush is Emma Watson, who the interviewer says has a crush on him, H blushes and, not willing to let it go, Louis points out a love bite. 5 October - Taylor tweets “Leaving Little Rock, headed to New Orleans. Writing a song on a moving bus” in the album video (8:20) Taylor said she wrote sad beautiful tragic on a bus.

17 October - Harry goes to Ed Sheeran concert with Louis at Eleanor's university then not seen till rehearsals 2 weeks later.

19 October - Harry did a 10 min phone interview alone with Grimmy and said he was passing through Birmingham. There are voices in the background at the end.

20 October - Taylor played San Diego. Harry was not seen. He posted "Finally set the correct time on my Microwave..I feel like a new man." on Twitter.

24 October- Harry is coughing in an interview and looks and sounds unwell. At 16:20 the interviewer asks about their break, Harry purses his lips for age thinking then says he is tried when he comes back to work because he spends his break rushing around to see everyone. Zayn looks to Louis who gives a loud “Hmmm” which is a tell of his for knowing more than is said.

30 October - Taylor writes in lover journal she (also) has a chest infection!

2 November - One Direction Tour rehearsals Harry back in London for month

17 November - Louis quoted in media "Harry's found 'The One' now." and doesn't name Caroline. Harry and Caroline never say more than friends, Eleanor seen with Louis often.

18 November - Up all night released. In listening party says “more than this” is his favorite, it’s a deep one. Harry in London, has dinner with Caroline Flack. On 27 November on chatty man Harry clarifies there were other people there and again says just friends. Articles and Caroline tweets about death threats for having dinner with Harry. (Like WTF would anyone date him publicly?).

22 November - Taylor posts photo of London shop for preppie rugby menswear (!) and posts a photo to instagram with "Superior Style and Quality Fit" 👀 written on the window. This is a latergram, she had a show in Madison Square Garden. On October 3 Harry had said Rugby shirts look better on girls.

24 November Sugarscope asks if they have an eye on anyone in the US and mention Taylor Swift, all 5 are actually quiet for the first time, Liam’s face changes to serious (0:34), Harry and Zayn look at Louis, maybe because of Oct 4. Niall offers Demi Lovato and all the boys start saying Hollywood in a silly voice. The same interviewer asks about romantic Christmas plans, Louis looks at Harry again, Harry answers truthfully “Christmas at home with family” seems the interviewer and band know what’s not being said, they ask Harry twice

13 December - Taylor's birthday party inside her Nashville apartment. posted a photo in a recording studio, so assumed that Begin again was recorded on on her birthday. Taylor not seen again that year other than Snow on the Beach Photos. Harry seen in London on the 13th. One direction in tour rehearsals till tour begins 18 December in England.

15 December - Harry posted that he went skinny dipping, as in no shorts to avoid doubt. Taylor still MIA. Paper Rings vibes.

16 December - it snowed in Liverpool, including the "Snow on the beach" 50 minutes from Harry's house in Holmes Chapel.

I8 December - 1 July - Up all night tour, Europe till us in February

22 December - in 1D you tube the band chose a fan question “from Taylor, if you were a girl who would you date” and Zayn laughs and says Harry.

24 December - One Direction Holiday till 3 January. Taylor MIA.

28 December - Taylor posts three photos from a beach one with her face on the beach "Childhood beach memories revisited" and one with snow on the beach behind her "Nothing quite like a freezing cold, wintery beach." some have assumed this was in New Jersey, but the shadows look like an afternoon on an western coast and there was no snow in NJ, nor Taylor seen near there. It had snowed at the beach in Liverpool which is west.

29 December - Taylor posted a seashell with Safe and Sound Lyrics written (it had just been released) with the caption "Saying goodbye to the shore, writing on a seashell."

30 December - Harry got his drivers licence, on 28 June 2012 on Bert show (11 mins) said “the first thing I did was my …….. someone brought the car to me and I dropped them off at the pub” Harry was in Manchester. Louis posted he was in Paris Disneyland with Eleanor. Apart from the winter/snow on the beach photos Taylor hadn't been seen for a week, she then posted a goodbye and Harry's first drive was to drop someone secret somewhere. 👀

3 January - Caroline Break up announcement. Harry later tweets, he 'didn't dump' her, he never said they were more than friends. Caroline also said "95% of what was reported was false".
