External Validation cycles, DBT Skills, & Fanfiction

I know I'm a broken record sometimes because here we are again (but wait, it's DIFFERENT this time 😂).

I did the dumb thing and compared my fic to someone else's and hurt my own feelings. The emotional SPIRAL ya'll, and I tried to talk myself out of feeling badly and felt WORSE when that didn't work. I'm in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (group and individual sessions) and am learning emotional distress tolerance and wise-mind techniques, yet I wasn't able to move myself from danger danger! so I must not be learning anything.

In DBT they have you fill out daily diary cards that engage you in the process of reflecting on how or whether you used your skills, what was the context regarding the strong, negative emotion, and just generally helps you chart your progress.

I figured this instance would be a good candidate for a diary card so I pulled out the app and started filling it out. By the time I was done with recording it, the had feeling lessened from a 9 (out of ten) to probably a 3? Godsdamn magical monkey brain. 😂

The REALLY cool thing about that (other than relief from the discomfort) is when the strong feeling lessens or resolves, then there's brain space for things like rational thoughts and the truth.

It's not ideal that I made a comparison, and the eventual goal is to avoid that distressing behavior because I won't feel compelled to due to unresolved insecurity/fear of rejection. But since I did, and the damage is done, I can make the most of the brain space I cleared up for course correction.

The stats of fics belonging to writers' circles are going to look significantly different from works that are done by solitary writers. Simple as that.

More importantly, it was never about the fic or the stats.

Rationally (key word) I know that I write highly niche, taboo, dark content. And I adore it AND my fic. Deep down I really do. I'm spending hours of my free time just writing it, and now I'm also spending additional hours on RoomStyler to create 3-D renderings of the residences and properties in my fic. So rationally speaking, I'm not actually insecure about the fic, or I wouldn't be doing any of this.

My wires get crossed, though, and I seek validation through means that sustained me for YEARS as an established writer in a different fandom, under a different name, writing much more socially acceptable content (and even then that was a very troubling and not-at-all-healthy dynamic for me to maintain). If I manage to feel that badly about something, it isn't about the thing. It's about me.

In other words, from the non-actions of imaginary strangers on the internet, I'm projecting that I as a person am rejected because of the problematic content I write (not the quality, even, lololol), evidenced by the stats of some other fic versus mine.

And I don't have a single fucking anti, nor have I had an anti encounter. Or, like, a single negative comment.

So............ I should stop that. When I'm able to pause and make space to break it down for myself like that, even I can admit that's really weird behavior and hey, I'd probably feel a lot better if I didn't... do... that.

Cosmic-level wise-mind will have me not bothered about being rejected or straight up reviled come rain or shine, but these are early days. That's gonna take some significant work, which always takes time. But this is The Way. 😂
